MASTERING PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE TIME OF COVID-19

SPRING 2020 JMC 321 AUBG



This is a mini-album of phtographs taken during COVID-19 by the students of the JMC321 Digital Photojournalism class at the American University in Bulgaria(AUBG). In the times of the pandemic, students, whose works are presented in the photobook, had to leave behind their regular student life and follow the quarantine regime. Despite the circumstances, they came up with an idea to express their vision of the situtaion from both inside and outside worlds and present it in one photo-album. All the photomaterials are shot and edited by the students themselves under the supervision of their class professor - Jodi Hilton.

Nikol Skortcheva

Nikol is Journalism and Buisness student in The American University in Bulgaria(AUBG). As everyone else, she is trying to find the best in every situation. When she was taking a walk in the centre of Sofia she found herself just staring at the amazing city. And at that moment, she knew she had to show it to everyone else.

Alicia Perez Bernandos

Alicia is a 20 year old journalism student from Madrid, Spain. She wants to specialize in sports journalism and improve her camera skills so she can be able to capture the decisive moments in a match.

Rowena Djengozov

Rowena is a 20-year-old from Papua New Guinea and Bulgaria, currently studying at AUBG as Junior majoring in Journalism and Mass Communications. She prefers capturing moments with my iPhone XS, as a more convenient and flexible way to photograph in public places.

Svetlozar Apostolov

Svetlozar says that being a hobbyist street photographer he has always been drawn towards what’s happening in the urban environment and aesthetics. Being stuck in Blagoevgrad, he took it upon himself to see what’s the difference in the centre of the city and his neighbourhood. Living close to the Roma neighbourhood gave him the opportunity to see the contrast of how people perceived the pandemic.

Snezhana is a Senior JMC student, hoping to soon graduate. She enjoys observing people and finding the absurdities in our daily existence.

Vera Arzumanyan

Vera is a sophomore student studying Journalism and Mass Communication at the American University in Bulgaria. Since it turned out that all of us would be locked inside our homes, she thought this project is a golden opportunity to capture her restlessness to find something useful to do within the margins of her home.

Javier Jennings Mozo

Javier is a senior Erasmus JMC student from Spain. He says that this project gave him the opportunity to showcase the importance of essential workers at the American University in Bulgaria during the times of this pandemic.

Yenlik is a second year student studying Journalism and Mass Communications at the Amercian University in Bulgaria (AUBG). For her, this photo-project as a unique opportunity to share with the world her vision of the COVID-19 situation in Kazakhstan.

Marian Judith Lopez Camarasa

Marian is a 21-year old journalism student from Spain. She is studying her third year at the American University in Bulgaria(AUBG) as an Erasmus student. Marian is interested in investigative and sports reporting and she has experience in radio and magazines.

Van Vo

Van Vo is a sophomore from American University in Bulgaria. This project shows the daily life of Ly Vo, a Vietnamese middle schooler, during the national social distancing period due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ly’s student card and red scarf, must-have things to enter her schools, has been hanged along with the bronze medals she got last year with her basketball team since Lunar New Year. Silvia Skenderova

Silvia is a senior at the American University in Bulgaria. She has decided to shoot the life of her grandparents, in the village that they live – Ablanica, during the Coronavirus pandemic because it brings her so much happiness to see them still being positive and making the best out of the whole situation.

Mina Zivotin

Mina is a graduating senior at the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG). Due to the pandemic of Covid-19 virus, she was forced to return home, to Leskovac, Serbia from campus in Bulgaria. She is now finishing my studies online, from her bedroom. Thus far, Mina’s parents and she herself have been inseparable for exactly 50 days. They have not spent this much time together, in total, over the past four years, as she was away at college. They are all happy to spend this time together, and be able to be there for each other during these challenging times for all. This is a short photo series of their time together in quarantine and self-isolation.

Milan, my father, is an infectious disease specialist, who works in the pharmaceutical field. He has just learned that his colleagues, friends, interns, mentors from the infectious disease department at the hospital most got infected and are patients now. April 5, 2020. Leskovac, Serbia

Milostina Krasteva

Milostina is a senior at the American University in Bulgaria. She studies Journalism, Mass Communications, and Business. One thing she can’t get enough of is spending time with friends. Whether quiet conversations over a cup of tea, music gigs, or grabbing food, she loves her social time. She is motivated by planning and accomplishing projects of which her favorite ones are cleaning the house with her sister. Milostina loves close-up shots because they can make any object beautiful.
