A Message From the Superintendent Hello La Crescent-Hokah Families and Community, Great things are happening every day in the LaCrescent-Hokah School District.

Between our dedicated teachers and support staff, we aim to give our students the best education possible while also promoting social-emotional health and encouraging the development of conscientious and responsible citizens.

I’ve been thinking of how to communicate what is happening inside of our district to our community. I send video updates to our staff and that has been well received.

What I plan to do is to start giving video updates to anyone in our community who would like to be updated regarding our school district. Community Summer Band Calling all local musicians! Our Community Summer Band program is returning again this summer... but with a revised format! We are still finalizing details at the time of this catalog going to print, so we ask that all interested persons register. We will provide details as they become available.

Community Summer Band is open to anyone who plays any concert band instrument. Youth entering grades 8 and older are welcome to be part of the group – it’s intergenerational!

NOT SURE WHAT FITNESS CLASS WORKS FOR YOU? We invite you to attend the first day of any of our fitness sessions for free! If you enjoy the class and would like to continue, sign up for the entire session.

Fitness-On-The-Go Card Too busy to commit to a rigid work out schedule? Take advantage of this opportunity to attend fitness class when they fit in to your schedule. The Fitness-On-The-Go Card is good for 10 fitness sessions of your choice. Mix it up or try them all. Please call or stop by the Community Education office to pick up your card. Driftless Drifters Hiking Club Join our friendly hikers for year-round adventures out in nature. Our region has many hidden gems to explore in all seasons and we want to show you the way. Trails will be in La Crescent, La Crosse and in the surrounding Driftless area. Hiking locations are announced a few days before each hike via email newsletter along with hiking tips and news. We will take the time to enjoy our beautiful surroundings and learn from each other as we spot flora, fauna and fungi on the trails. Your annual dues give you access to Driftless Drifter regular weekly and special bonus hikes scheduled at other times throughout the year. Be sure to have good footgear and weather-appropriate clothing.

Tuesday Morning Hikes - Tuesdays, 8:30 am (March-December), 10:30 am (January- February). Hikes of 5 miles or less in length and usually 1.5-2.5 hours long with a variety of terrain including flatter trails to moderate inclines with steeper elevations up to 500 feet while hiking bluffs (may include some rock scrambling). You choose the hikes that best fit your skills!

Rambles – Wednesdays, approximately once a month, 7-10 miles in length. Scheduled when the leaders are available. Watch email for times and locations.

Ambles – Fridays, 8:30 am (March-December), 10:30 am (January-February), under 2.5 miles in length on flatter, sometimes paved, grassy or dirt trails at an easy pace.

Tai Chi - Building a Strong and Healthy Mind, Body, and Spirit!

Instructor: Tom Diana Tai Chi is a gentle Chinese art that has been practiced for about 1,000 years. It is an exercise in that it improves lower body strength, bone density, blood circulation, and balance; it also reduces blood pressure. Modern studies have shown that it helps relieve anxiety and depression. Since it is a lowimpact activity, it can be practiced well into one’s later years.

Participants will learn a basic five-element chi-gong exercise and immediately engage in some walking exercises. A Tai Chi form will also be taught. Come join in “meditation in motion” art and exercise.

I’m a certified Pilates instructor and a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher through Yoga Alliance, and I love helping people move, strengthen, and feel their best. When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me outside—hiking, camping, traveling, or soaking up the water— because being active and enjoying life is my happy place. Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (6th Grade and Up) Learn to save a life! Learn critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive. Based on the course you select, students learn skills such as how to perform high-quality CPR, use an AED, and how to recognize and respond to various types of illnesses and injuries. Course Curriculum follows the 2020 AHA Guidelines. CPR face masks will be available for purchase if you would like one.

The La Crescent Fire Department is offering a blended learning class in which you will complete the online content of your desired class on your own time with the need to only come in to perform hands-on skills on the day of class. You will receive online instructions after signing up for the class. Plan for a few hours to complete the online content before the scheduled hands-on class. You will need to show proof of online completion at the time of the hands-on class (a screenshot or print certificate is acceptable)

Basic Firearms and Permit to Carry a Concealed Handgun Training This is a one-day basic course for men and women with little or no experience with firearms, as well as for more experienced shooters. Included are explanations of ammunition function and nomenclature, differences in various types of handguns, legal aspects of acquiring, possessing and using firearms, and the practical application of use of force laws in self-protection situations. Also included are many entertaining, real-world examples and stories. Emphasis is always on SAFETY. Completion of this course fulfills the training requirements for a Minnesota Permit to Carry a Handgun, honored in twenty-seven states. It also fulfills the training requirement for Wisconsin and Iowa Permits, and for a Florida permit honored in an additional seven states.

The live fire shooting exercise includes one-on-one coaching. Handguns and ammunition are provided, as well as ear and eye protection. An enclosed, heated shelter is provided for shooting in inclement weather.

Students may wish to pack a lunch.

Early Childhood Screening Early Childhood Screening supports children’s readiness for kindergarten and promotes cognitive and social emotional health and development. During screening, we observe your child’s vision and hearing, height and weight, large and small muscles, thinking, language skills, and social and emotional development. The entire appointment takes less than an hour.

Camp Kids On Stage!

A dynamic youth program to introduce our youngest community members to the world of theater!

Community Education and Appleseed Community Theater have teamed up once again to bring this unique experience to kids ranging in age from entering first grade though entering ninth grade.

This summer, participants will present Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr.

This is a three week immersion program teaching the basics of theatre, common terminology, and processes. Students will learn about the auditioning process and then get to audition for their parts in the show. They will be divided into smaller groups by age to learn and rehearse the script and music.

Classes will be held daily for rehearsals from either 9:00 am to noon or 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. *Please register for only one camp.* Kids Company will only walk kids for the Afternoon session.

Four 2-week sessions are offered throughout the summer. Each session includes ten lessons. All lessons will meet Monday through Friday. Classes may be cancelled due to the weather and won’t be made up.

Parent Tot Swim is open to kiddos ages 1-4 with a parent or guardian. This class is designed to introduce infants and toddlers to the water in a safe, positive, and playful environment with a parent or guardian participating in the pool. Emphasis is placed on water comfort, basic safety skills, and building confidence through songs, games, and guided activities.

Make a splash this summer with our Water Aerobics program! This low-impact, high-energy workout is perfect for adults of all fitness levels. Held in the pool, this class uses water resistance to build strength, improve cardiovascular health, and increase flexibility without joint stress. Ideal for active adults, older adults, and those recovering from an injury. Participants will enjoy guided routines that combine cardio, strength training, and flexibility excercises in a supportive and upbeat environment.

SWIM TEAM

JUNE 8 - JULY 30

Swim Team is open to swimmers ages 7 to 18 who wish to build endurance, improve strokes, get exercise, and have fun while competing together at six or seven swim meets during June and July. Most meets are on Saturday mornings.

Swim team meets every Monday through Thursday beginning June 8 at either 11:15 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. or 12:05 p.m. to 12:55 p.m. Due to a need for scheduled pool maintenance time, there is no swim team on Fridays.

To participate, swimmers must have passed Level 4 of swim lessons.

LOG ROLLING

The La Crescent Aquatic Center is a great place to hold your next gathering! We can handle groups of all sizes - birthday parties, family reunions, office, team get-togethers. The pool is available for rent on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Parties at the La Crescent Aquatic Center feature the use of the pool, waterslides, climbing wall, and locker rooms. Party host may bring in food, drink, and decorations; however, we ask that no alcohol or glass containers be brought in to the facility.

Registration Information We encourage early registration and payment is needed with registration. Register early to prevent class cancellation. This can easily be accomplished in the following ways: Online: www.isd300.k12.mn.us click “Menu” then “Community Education.”

By Phone: Call 507-895-5150 to register by phone using your VISA/Mastercard. Phone registrations are taken Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–4:00 pm, following the school calendar.

In Person: Community Education is located at 703 So. 11th Street, La Crescent. Office hours are 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Mondays through Fridays. The office is closed on nonschool days. Cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard and are all accepted when you pay in person.

Cancellation Policy We realize that schedules are busy, but your early registration assures that your class is a “Go.” Class Cancellation Policy and Refunds Prior to Start Date: Class cancellation must be made a minimum of 3 working days prior to the class start date for a FULL REFUND (unless otherwise noted).

If you cancel with less than 3 days notice, you will be issued a refund, minus a $5.00 processing fee and any costs incurred (supplies, food etc.).

31 Scholarships

Scholarships are available to students who qualify for the school district free and reduced lunch program. We offer a 75% reduction for those who qualify for free lunch and a 50% reduction for anyone qualifying for the reduced lunch program. There are some exceptions to this policy. Contact our office with your questions.

By registering for a program, I understand that every effort will be made to protect and safeguard all students. I agree not to hold La Crescent-Hokah School District/ ISD 300 liable for any illness or mishap from any cause whatsoever. I also give the instructors/supervisors full authority in dealing with the problems of discipline. I understand that any student disregarding rules is subject to being sent home.
