Introduction

Catholic Student Society of Universiti Putra Malaysia (abbreviated as CSSUPM) is located in UPM, Serdang, Selangor. It has been established since 1974 and is recognized by the university. The society currently caters for the Catholic students of the main Serdang campus with the acknowledgement of the Catholic student population in the satellite campus(es).

Eucharistic Mass is celebrated at the Chapel of St. Anne’s on Saturdays and certain days of obligation during the ongoing semester. The society is also partly known as <A Family Away From Home= to its members, and most of the activities are held in the chapel. With the recent changes in the Kuala Lumpur archdiocesan ecclesiastical management, the society is currently within the pastoral care of the local parish church (Church of The Holy Family, Kajang) under the responsibility of the parish priest(s) as Campus Minister(s) and a campus spiritual advisor assigned by the Archbishop.

Dear CSSUPM,

What an amazing term it9s been, 2023/2024. This magazine is a journey down memory lane, capturing all the moments and activities that made it special. I9ve had the privilege of watching students step out of their comfort zones, fully engaging in CSS activities. These events have been not just fun but a great way for everyone to unwind, connect, and find a place of belonging. Through it all, we have grown closer to God. CSSUPM has truly become a family away from home for all of us.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Continue to walk with Jesus. God Bless

FRom the FRom the PRESIDENT PRESIDENT

Shalom y’all, I am Ray Anselm, and it was such an amazing time to be the President of CSSUPM 23/24. First and foremost, I would like to express my utmost gratitude to my line of EXCO team because without their help, you wouldn't see all the activities that had been carried out, which will be displayed in this magazine later on. Truth is, they are the best team I ever worked with and to see those moments again is nearly impossible to me. To parish priests, despite your busy schedule, your unwavering support in conducting masses in St. Anne Chapel is truly invaluable and we couldn’t ask for more from you, we really appreciate it. Besides that, I would like to thank Sr. Margaret and Dr. Clement who has been working really hard behind the scenes protecting us and giving advices on our plans, decisions and actions, without them both this community will go astray, away from God’s love. Not forgetting everyone; juniors, seniors, and alums who have been contributing in our activities, without you all CSSUPM is merely a society name and St. Anne Chapel will not have a special place in our heart.

You guys are great members of this society and I really appreciate your efforts because each one of you is an important part in building the chapel and the society as well as the bond we had together just like stated in Roman 12:3-8 and Ephesians 4:14-16.

Throughout my time in CSSUPM from my first year until now, the growth of this society after the pandemic has been gradually increasing and I am very grateful to experience it. Bitter and sweet, every moment plays a part in my life that I will treasure forever since it makes me what I am today; memories to be cherished, moments to be enjoyed and mistakes to be reflected, that makes growing beautiful. What drives me to become a better version of myself is CSSUPM and its community, to lead and experience, I feel the bond when being with you all, thank you everyone. Despite its name and motto, <A Family Away from Home=, it is okay not to feel the same as some of us that CSSUPM is a secondfamily.

I felt it once when I first joined in so I truly understand your thoughts and heart since it is not easy to have that kind of bond with everyone but at the end of the day is how you engage that connection with them. If you ever get stuck in a place where you don’t know what to do, just pray to God and I am very sure He will give you the answer, just be patient. It might get uncomfortable and awkward in the beginning until you feel wanting to run away, but I assure you that it will get better. Hence, to the current members that we are trying to reach out to, do not hesitate to come back as we will always welcome you whilst to the juniors that are joining us, do not be afraid as you will be making mistakes because what matters is for you to grow and be better, takethisopportunitytolearn.

The important keys in developing your character in a good way are the sense of realisation and reflection. If you can't take a big step, carve it into a smaller one. To fall and rise; To fail and succeed, you must experience both sadness and joy, asonecannotexistwithouttheother. Thankyouforyourtimereadingthis.

FRom the VICE FRom the VICE PRESIDENT PRESIDENT

Annyeong yeoreobun, Sasha imnida~ I’m the Vice President for 2023/2024 term. I would like to thank all the EXCOs for your dedication, hard work & unwavering support to make CSS a place united in faith, love & service. Being a vice president has taught me valuable lessons that I will never gain anywhere. It wasn't always filled with rainbows and butterflies, but it was certainly filled with moments that I will forever cherish . It is always important to see things from others point of view & appreciate every little thing along this journey

To Sr Margaret, Dr Clement our advisor, my beloved seniors & friends who have walked this journey before me, words can never fully express the gratitude I hold in my heart. I will always remember how you stood beside me, reminding me that it’s okay to not have everything figured out. Your kindness made all the difference. Thank you for all the love & wisdom you shared. You are, and always will be, an irreplaceable part of this journey. Forever grateful

To the juniors, embrace every moment, the highs and the lows, because this journey will shape you in ways you can't yet imagine. Trust the process, stay close to one another, and never forget that you have a family here that will always have your back :).

To the EXCOS 24/25 term ,congratulations & all the best, we believe in you!! Embrace the challenges ahead with an open heart and mind, and lean on one another for support. And when you’re tired, remember that it’s okay to pause, to breathe, to rest, because everything will work out in the end, jangan lelah bekerja di ladangnya Tuhan

To everyone that is reading, always seek God in everything you do, for He will guide you through it all. As for my favourite bible verse, Matthew 7:7, <Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you =.

My journey at UPM began with just me, but it has blossomed into a family so dear, I find it hard to say goodbye as I approach my final year. CSS wasn’t just where I found myself; it’s where I found love, where I found belonging, where I found a family. And that’s something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. Cause we are one big family, no one can ever take away the love that we have~ saranghae yeoreobun<3333

FROM THE FROM THE SECRETARY SECRETARY

First and foremost, I am truly humbled and blessed to be part of this EXCO team. I still vividly remember the day I was elected as an EXCO member. Initially, I hesitated to take on this role because I was afraid it would <burden= me. But, everything happens for a reason. Little did I know, it would become one of the best moments of my university life. I just want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who believed in me and helped shape me into who I am today.

This magazine is a true testament to how much this humble Catholic community has grown (as you can see from the activities that had been executed throughout the term). Being part of this community has taught me so much, and there’s no other club that welcomes you like a warm, comforting hug and I hope you (reader) may feel that too!

As the Honorary Secretary for 23/24, I have genuinely enjoyed working alongside such passionate leaders and dedicated EXCO members. A special thank you to our advisors, Dr. Clement and Sr. Margaret, who serve as beacons of wisdom. I also want to acknowledge those who are indirectly involved but have contributed to our community. I pray that the next EXCO line will honor the club’s name and give their best.

Do everything in love and have faith in God and in all His mighty plans as everything happens for a reason~

FROM THE FROM THE TREASURER TREASURER

My name is Dyqeo Davenzeos, and it’s been an honor to serve as the treasurer of the Catholic Student Society at UPM. I’m deeply grateful to be part of this amazing community, and I want to thank you all for your ongoing support and involvement.

Our society thrives because of your collective efforts, no matter how big or small. Every contribution brings us closer to our mission of creating a welcoming space for faith and fellowship. I encourage you to stay involved whether by attending events, volunteering, or offering prayers. Your presence makes a difference.

As treasurer, I’ve learned that managing finances is about stewardship, using our resources to support meaningful initiatives and build connections. One of my favorite memories was during our Coffee Morning, where everyone worked tirelessly together. Despite the long hours, we raised enough to fund our camp, a true testament to what we can achieve through teamworkandfaith.

I’d like to share a favorite Bible verse: <And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus= (Philippians 4:19). This verse reminds me to trust in God’s provision, knowingHewillguideus.

Thank you for trusting me as your treasurer. Together, we’ll continue building a community rootedinfaithandlove. DYQEODAVENZEOS

FROM THE FROM THE ASSISTANT treasurer ASSISTANT treasurer

Hi CSSUPMERZ, my name is Kenneth Koh, and I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Assistant Treasurer for 23/24 term. It has been an incredible journey working alongside such a dedicated and passionate team.

First, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire community for your unwavering support and involvement. It is your participation and engagement that keep our club vibrant and growing. Our achievements are not just a reflection of the EXCO’s efforts but a testament to the power of collaboration and unity within our community.

As the Assistant Treasurer, I’ve learned the importance of responsibility, and trust. It is through this role that I have come to appreciate the true value of accountability and service to others. And, as the director for this term's annual camp, I’ve witnessed the hard work of the committee and the incredible outcomes from the camp. CSS’s annual camp is one of the activities where friendships are born, talents are discovered, and memories are made.

I encourage everyone to continue being involved, whether through leadership roles or simply participating in activities. It’s through these actions that we grow stronger as a community.

To the juniors, appreciate your time in university life. Treasure every moment with your friends, especially the CSSUPM members. Remember, whenever you face hardship, you are never alone—seek God and surround yourself with the community. I believe that our beloved St. Anne's Chapel and the community can provide the support you need.

A verse that has guided me is from Philippians 4:13, <I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.= It’s a reminder that with faith and determination, anything is possible. Wish you all the best !!! Thank you & God bless !!!

FROM THE FROM THE LITURGICAL

LITURGICAL COORDINATOR COORDINATOR

I’m Sherene and it has been a blessing to be given the opportunity to serve St Anne's Chapel as the Liturgical Coordinator alongside Jay. I remember Jay and I whining about how long we’d have to serve as the LCs’ because of how scary the workload sounded, but by the end of our second term, we had a tough time letting our roles go haha jokes on us. Given the thought that I was getting into a society where I never really knew anyone in the beginning, I’m glad to be part of this mini family where we continue to build and grow.

To Sister Margaret, thank you for always guiding us through the times we thought we were going to fly off somewhere but I guess Jay and I had our time preparing to set up for mass with Sister’s help together with Nikeisha, Benilda, Amelia and Christy our MM and CIC crew.

Though there were times we were freaking out about what could and would go wrong for mass (hello, mass prep anxiety!), but with the always-supportive Fabian, Anthea, Estelin, Sherly, and Dr. Clement, by our side, we stayed afloat with their encouragement and help. Let’s not forget all servers who volunteered or were ahemforced to participate and serve during mass, thank you! I’m glad towards the end of our term we had people coming forward to serve more.

As I wrap things up, I’m reminded of this gem through my uni days from Isaiah 41:10: <Do not be afraid, for I am with you; do not be alarmed, for I am your God. I give you strength, truly I help you, truly I hold you firm with my saving right hand.=

Hello. I am Jay, Former Assistant Liturgical Coordinator 2023/24. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to The Almighty, who has made this possible, and to those who nominated, campaigned and voted for me. I would like also to thank my superior (the priests and Sr. Margaret), my advisor and fellow EXCOs who has helped me throughout this journey, especially Sherene, my leader and my partner throughout this journey, let’s not forget also Benilda, Nikeisha, Amelia and Christy, whom has been part of The Trinity in mass preparation. Last but not least to the Secretaries, Pearl and Joanne for their idea of this magazine, which, enabled the Excos to express their will. Throughout my journey, I have been chasing my mission to recruit and train as many servers as I could with the vision that one day, CSS UPM will be filled with many experienced and talented servers. While on my journey to achieve this, I have been carrying this value <Anything for LC=.

To the reader, I hope you participate more in CSSs’ activity, especially the weekly mass.

You may also contribute to the society, either, being a part of a programme’s community or by God’s will, an Exco.

To my servers, it’s been a wonderful and fun journey to work together with you guys. Thank you for your service.

To my former Exco batch, Kenneth and Joanne, all the best for your new term. Finally, to my successor, Pretty Kimberly and Panny Octavia, may you work well with your sub-partners, Gabriel, Pricillia, Eunise and Joan.

1 Corinthians 3: 10-11:

10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

FROM THE FROM THE COMMUNICATION AND COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION COORDINATOR INFORMATION COORDINATOR

My name is Amelia, and it has been an absolute honor to serve as the Communication and Information Coordinator for this past term. I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who contributed to our community’s growth and vibrancy. Your involvement, whether big or small, has made a world of difference.

During my time in this role, I faced personal challenges— health issues, academic pressure, and moments of feeling overwhelmed. Yet, being part of this community lightened my heart. Every time I felt weighed down, CSS and the people I met here brought me peace and renewal. Your kindness and friendship reminded me that there are still so many good and caring people in the world, and for that, I am truly grateful. Serving as the Communication and Information Coordinator has not only taught me valuable skills, like time management and teamwork, but it also taught me invaluable lessons about life, relationships, and self-growth. It showed me that, even during difficult times, being part of something bigger than myself can bring clarity and purpose.

I encourage you all to continue being involved—whether by sharing your thoughts, attending events, or even taking up a role in the future. Your voice and participation are the foundation of this society. Together, we can keep building a place where everyone feels heard, valued, and included.

A Bible verse that has guided me throughout my time is Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." This verse reminds me that no matter how challenging things may seem, trusting in God always leads us in the right direction. Thank you once again for trusting me in this role. I look forward to seeing our community continue to flourish and grow in the years to come.

God bless you all!

Shalom everyone! I'm Christy, Assistant Communications and Information Coordinator for 23/24.

First of all, I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to serve the Lord alongside my fellow EXCO members. It hasn't always been easy, but look who's staying until the end of the term! I am eternally grateful for Dr. Clement and Sr. Margaret for their guidance, as well as to all the CSSUPM members for their love and support.

To the newly elected EXCOs and those coming in, if you ever feel doubtful about your journey, please remember this: "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you." - John 15:16.

Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this magazine possible. Your hard work and dedication have truly brought this vision to life.

CSSUPM Convocation Week

CSSUPM MAGAZINE #08

<For I know the plans I have for you,= declares the Lord, <plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.= Jeremiah 29:11

In line with the Convocation Week celebrated in November 2023, our executive community upholds a cherished tradition of welcoming back our alumni to the chapel for a special gathering. This symbolic event marks their transition from campus life to the broader world beyond. It serves as a tribute to their contributions to our community during their time with us, ensuring they are always remembered and valued. Farewell to these amazing individuals who have made all the difference in our lives, and let the future bring us together again!

Convocation Mass

During the mass, several of our alumni volunteered to serve in roles such as warden, altar server, reader, and musician, symbolising their last gratitude for their time as members of our community. While many were unable to attend the mass, their absence was deeply felt, and our genuine desire for their presence was evident. Despite this, we extend our heartfelt wishes to them for success and fulfilment in all theirfutureendeavours.

From December 5th to 8th, 2023, our Catholic society group organized an unforgettable annual camp that was filled with faith, fellowship, and fun. The four-day event was designed to deepen our spiritual lives, build stronger community bonds, and equip us with tools to navigate life's challenges.

The excitement began on the morning of December 5th as we boarded the bus for an hour-and-a-half drive to the camp venue. Upon arrival, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation and energy. The first order of business was an ice-breaking session, where we played various games that helped us get to know each other better. We were then divided into groups, each tasked with creating a unique cheer and a poster representing our team spirit. The day also included a thought-provoking talk by Dr. Clement, who set the tone for the camp with his inspiring words.

The second day was packed with activities designed to challenge us both physically and spiritually. We participated in a series of fun and competitive games that fostered teamwork. The morning also featured an insightful talk by Aunty Cynthia De Souza titled "Tools for Healing Life's Disappointments," which offered practical advice and spiritual guidance on dealing with setbacks. In the afternoon, Dr. Kenny delivered a talk titled "Your Home Away from Home," emphasising the importance of finding solace and community within the Church. The day culminated in a heartfelt praise and worship session that left us all feeling spiritually rejuvenated.

The third day was dedicated to outdoor activities and deeper spiritual reflection. We spent the morning engaging in various outdoor games that encouraged us to work together and enjoy the beauty of nature. Then, Sister Margaret Pereira gave a talk on "Building a Relationship with God Through Prayer," providing us with valuable insights into strengthening our personal connection with God. This was followed by a powerful session with Rev. Fr. Michael on "Wounded Healer," where he shared his experiences and teachings on finding strength and healing through faith. The evening featured a movie night, which was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's learnings, followed by an uplifting praise and worship session.

As the camp drew to a close on the fourth day, we woke up at dawn to experience a campfire gathering, and soon we found ourselves gathering our belongings and preparing to depart. The journey back home was filled with shared stories, laughter, and a sense of spiritual renewal. The camp had not only provided us with memorable experiences but also equipped us with the tools and insights to carry forward in our daily lives.

On December 25, 2023, our Catholic society group gathered for a memorable Christmas party. The festivities included a lively Secret Santa gift exchange, where surprises and laughter were shared by all. We also enjoyed a traditional cake-cutting ceremony, symbolising unity and celebration. Adding to the excitement, we held a prize-giving ceremony to recognize the winners of our "Photo Contest" and "Quizmas Challenge" held in the days leading up to Christmas.

The highlight of the evening was singing Christmas carols together, filling the room with joyful melodies and the spirit of the season.

This heartwarming celebration fostered a deep sense of community and gratitude, leaving us with joyful hearts as we embraced the blessings of Christmas and looked forward to the New Year.

MASSESON

Our Catholic group celebrated Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses at Holy Family Church, Kajang. The church was beautifully decorated, and the Masses were filled with hymns, readings, and a homily about the birth of Jesus. These masses were special, bringing our community together in faith and joy, especially in the hearts of those who were not able to return home for Christmas, this year.

To keep the hardworking students energized under the scorching sun, light refreshments were provided, ensuring everyone could enjoy a welldeserved break after their efforts.

Following the tremendous success of our previous Coffee Morning event, held in the welcoming canteen of Holy Family Church Kajang, we brought back Coffee Morning 2.0 in the second term of the semester.

From the Editors From the Editors

At the 2023/2024 EXCO Planning Camp, we conceived the idea of creating CSSUPM's first-ever magazine. This initiative will serve as a way to document our journey throughout the term, allowing future members to reflect on and appreciate the dedication and sense of community that have shaped CSSUPM.

First and foremost, we want to thank the members of CSSUPM, for making this magazine possible through their dedication and enthusiasm. Their participation has contributed tremendously to the community which shines through in every page of this magazine.

Special thanks to our club advisors for their guidance and support, inspiring us to deepen our understanding of Catholic values.

We are also grateful to the contributors, who have shared their talents, time and willingness with us.

If you have reached this far, we want to thank you, readers, for your support. We hope this magazine inspires you to grow in faith and community as we journey together in Christ.

In gratitude, Pearl and Joanne
