The Central Valley Food Paradox:

Food Deserts in the Cornucopia

I

n 2009, Stockton, California was listed by Forbes magazine as the most miserable city in the US in which to live. There were a number of factors leading to this designation. Included were high crime, unemployment and foreclosure rates. In 2010, Stockton moved down the list to number two, even though unemployment rose to almost 17%. In 2011, Stockton took the top spot again.

Foreclosures affected 6.9% of all homes in the city, while home values decreased 67%. Stockton’s violent crime and unemployment rates rank in the top ten for US cities. (Forbes, 2011) As the county seat of San Joaquin County, Stockton is located on the San Joaquin River, in the heart of the California Delta. Created by the confluence of the Calaveras, San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers, this Delta —in many ways— defines the physical attributes of the county. Because of the rich peat soils and temperate climate, the county has a longstanding agricultural heritage. Currently, t h e major crops grown include asparagus, cherries, tomatoes, walnuts, almonds and grapes.

One of the paradoxes of the landscape in California’s Central Valley is the persistence of hunger in communities situated among the world’s most productive agricultural fields. Physical proximity to agricultural production does not overcome the economic and social distances many people face in their daily efforts to stave off hunger (Allen, 1999). The USDA reported in 2007 that 11 percent of United States households were food insecure at some point in time.

In Stockton, that number is closer to 30%.

According to the National Poverty Center, 25.8 percent of blacks and 25.3 percent of Hispanics were poor, compared to 9.4 percent of non-Hispanic whites in 2009 (NPC, 2010).

Because of Stockton’s history and location, it has always been one of California’s most diverse communities with less than 45 percent of the population self-identifying as White and the majority of the remaining population selfidentifying as Hispanic or Latino. As a result

of the cumulative effects of poverty, acculturation, and inequality, Stockton’s population faces serious food security issues: 1. Fewer than 15 percent of school children in our community eat the recommended servings of fruit, and less than 20%eat the recommended servings of vegetables.

2. About 25% of what adolescents eat is considered junk food, such as deep- fried foods, desserts, soft drinks, candy, cookies, pies and cakes. (California Project LEAN, 2009).

3. Most of the “convenience” stores located on the south side of Stockton —and especially Boggs Tract area— primarily sell alcohol, processed foods, and sugar-laced sweets.

4. San Joaquin County is ranked #20 of 58 counties in access to the food stamps (Program Access Index, 2007).

n el 2009, la revista Forbes catalogó a Stockton como la ciudad más miserable para vivir en los EEUU. Habían varios factores que llevaban a esta conclusión: altos índices de crimen, desempleo y embargos hipotecarios. En el 2010 Stockton pasó a ser la número dos, a pesar que su índice de desempleo había subido hasta casi un 17%.

En el 2011 Stockton volvió a tomar el primer lugar —los embargos afectaban el 6,9% de todas las viviendas en la ciudad, al tiempo que el valor de las mismas se reducía en un 67 por ciento. Stockton se ubica entre las 10 ciudades con el más alto crimen y el mayor desempleo (Forbes, 2011) La capital del Condado San Joaquín se ubica en la ribera del Rio San Joaquín, en el corazón del Delta de California. Creado por la convergencia de los ríos Calaveras, San Joaquín y Sacramento, este delta —de muchas maneras— define los atributos del condado. Por su suelo rico en turba y temperado clima, el condado posee una larga historia agrícola. Hoy en día, sus mayores cultivos incluyen espárragos, cerezas, tomates, nueces, almendras y uvas.

Una de las paradojas que marcan al Valle Central de California es la persistencia del hambre en comunidades situadas en medio de los campos más productivos del mundo.

La proximidad a la producción agrícola no es suficiente para salvar la distancia económica y social que muchos enfrentan a diario para mantener el hambre a raya (Allen, 1999). En el 2007 el Departamento de Agricultura de los EEUU informó que el once por ciento de los hogares estadounidenses sufrían de inseguridad alimenticia en algún momento. En Stockton ese número es más cercano al 30 por ciento.

County, there is a paradox of hunger and obesity. As in many economically depressed communities, one of the primary concerns in public schools in San Joaquin County is the increasing obesity among school children who daily fill themselves with unhealthy, and empty, calories. In 2009, to understand the circumstances surrounding community members seeking food assistance, the Hunger Task Force of San Joaquin County designed and disseminated a hunger survey. The survey targeted respondents who frequent local, state, and federal hunger agencies across San Joaquin County. One of the most startling pieces of information was that 76% of the respondents stated that within the last 12 months their children skipped meals some months (though not every month) because they did not have enough money for food.

CalFresh, the National School Lunch Program, community food banks and many charitable organizations distribute food and aid to deal with this problem, but an increasing number of organizations, such as PUENTES, the non-profit sustainable development organization, introduced elsewhere in this issue, put the emphasis on helping people learn to grow their own quality food so that they can eat healthfully and more affordably. Boggs Tract Community Farm increases access to and consumption of healthy food at the neighborhood level. It develops leadership and job skills and creates a self-sustaining cooperative business.

The term “food desert” will no longer apply to the South Stockton community of Boggs Tract and instead there will be access to an abundance of local and seasonal foods, and an enthusiasm for cooking and eating locally

grown, fresh produce.

With the continuing support and engagement of the community, the efforts by these organizations to reduce food insecurity may benefit more of our families and eliminate our other food deserts, especially in downtown Stockton, which should be the showcase of our city in all respects, and not just for fancy buildings.

dado diseñó y distribuyó una encuesta sobre el hambre. La encuesta se centró entre los que frecuentan las agencias locales, estatales y federales a través de todo el Condado San Joaquín. Unos de los datos más asombrosos fue que el 78% de los encuestados declararon que, en los pasados 12 meses, sus hijos no comieron alguna de sus comidas diarias por meses (aunque no todos los meses) porque no tenían suficiente dinero para alimentos.

CalFresh, el Programa Nacional de Almuerzos Escolares, bancos de víveres, y numerosas organizaciones distribuyen comida y ayuda para paliar este problema, pero un creciente número de organizaciones —incluyendo Puentes, organización para el desarrollo autosostenible que se cubre en otros artículos de esta edición— enfatizan que a la gente hay que ayudarla a cultivar su propia comida de calidad para que coman bien y barato. La Granja Comunitaria del Fraccionamiento Boggs incrementa el acceso y el consumo de alimentos sanos a nivel de vecindario, y desarrolla liderazgo y especialización laboral, creando un comercio cooperativo y autosostenible. El término “desierto alimenticio” ya no se podrá aplicar al Fraccionamiento Boggs en el sur de Stockton, sino que habrá acceso a una abundante variedad de alimentos locales y de temporada… y con el entusiasmo de cocinar, comer lo que ellos mismos cultivaron: verduras frescas.

Con el continuo apoyo y participación de la comunidad, los esfuerzos de estas organizaciones para reducir la inconstancia de la comida puede beneficiar más a nuestras familias y eliminar otros desiertos alimenticios, especialmente en Stockton Centro, lo que debiese ser un ejemplo para nuestra ciudad en todos los aspectos, no sólo en edificios extravagantes.

Eating Our Way to the Bottom

A

t a time when the outlook for Latinos seems to be improving so much, we need to be more cautious and vigilant than ever about our emerging role in American society. Latinos played a decisive role in the 2011 election. Governor Brown has just officially recognized that Latinos will surpass whites as the most populous group in California this year. President Obama and a bipartisan group of Senators have begun to work on, not just talk about, comprehensive immigration reform, as Latino leadership in our state and national legislatures and in many other aspects of life have becomes more prominent than ever. Yet at the same time, the way Latinos are eating as may drag them the bottom of American society.

Studies have clearly shown for more than twenty years that Latino immigrants, especially those from Mexico, are healthier and have longer life expectancies than the white majority that still sets the pattern for society. Yet the longer they are here and the more they eat like that white majority, the worse their health becomes and the more their life expectancy falls. A report from one of these studies found that “immigrants born in Mexico stick with the traditional foods longer,” according to Carolina Batis, a Ph.D. candidate in nutrition at the University of North Carolina and a native of Mexico. “The diets of Mexicans born in the U.S. almost entirely reflect the diet of the American culture. We’re seeing that families often become completely acculturated to the American diet within one generation in the U.S.” Although the latest research shows that there may be some undiagnosed health problems among immigrants, the overall findings still hold. What is most important is to be conscious of the way our surroundings influence the choices we make and their consequences. In Mexico, coffee is traditionally drunk black, corn tortillas form a large part of the diet and low fat meat and milk, and fresh vegetables have traditionally formed a larger part of the diet. In the U.S., milk and sugar is often added to the coffee, white flour bread and tortillas become more common, and worse is the consumption of sugary drinks, including juices, especially processed foods.

n estos tiempos en que pareciera todo va mejorando para los latinos es cuando debemos tener más cuidado que nunca sobre la situación en la que nos encontramos dentro de la sociedad estadounidense. Los latinos jugaron un decisivo papel en la elección del 2010. El Gobernador Brown acaba de reconocer oficialmente que este año los latinos sobrepasarán a los euroamericanos como la población más numerosa en California. El presidente Obama y un grupo bipartito de senadores han comenzado a trabajar —no a sólo hablar— en una completa reforma inmigratoria; y el liderazgo latino —tanto en la legislatura estatal y nacional como en muchos otros aspectos— está alcanzando una prominencia sin precedente.

Sin embargo y al mismo tiempo, la manera que estamos comiendo al “americanizarnos” nos puede arrastrar e incluso mantener en el más bajo nivel de la sociedad estadounidense.

Hay estudios que revelan que por más de

veinte años los inmigrantes latinos, especialmente de México, son más sanos y longevos que la mayoría blanca que todavía marca la pauta de la sociedad. Sin embargo, mientras más pasamos aquí, más comemos como los blancos, más empeora nuestra salud, y vivimos menos. El texto de uno de estos informes reza: “Los inmigrantes mexicanos —los nacidos allá—mantienen sus tradiciones culinarias por más tiempo,” declara Carolina Batis, mexicana de nacimiento y quien trabaja en su doctorado en nutrición en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte, “las dietas de los mexicanos nacidos en los EEUU en casi todos los casos reflejan la dieta de la cultura estadounidense. Observamos que hay familias que han asimilado completamente la dieta de este país en apenas una generación de residencia.”

Aunque los últimos estudios revelan que pareciera haber problemas de salud sin diagnosticar entre los inmigrantes, el resultado en general se mantiene. Es muy importante estar consciente de cómo nuestro alrededor afecta nuestro gusto y las consecuencias que nos trae. En México, tradicionalmente, el café se bebe negro, las tortillas de maíz son parte integral de la dieta como también son las carnes sin grasa, la leche descremada y las verduras frescas. En los EEUU se le añade azúcar y leche al café, el pan y tortillas de harina blanca se ha hecho más común; pero lo peor viene del consumo de bebidas azucaradas, incluyendo los jugos, y especialmente los alimentos procesados.

Desde 1991 y entre todos los grupos étnicos de los EEUU, los mexicoamericanos han experimentado el más alto aumento en sobrepeso y obesidad y —según el profesor Gilbert López de la Universidad Estatal de California-Fresno— la tendencia es peor en el Valle Central. Los factores que contribuyen a este resultado son muchos pero, entre los más importantes, se encuentra el efecto que el bajo ingreso y del estatus socioeconómico tiene sobre el sobrepeso convirtiéndolo en enfermedad, enviándonos más abajo o simplemente manteniéndonos en el fondo.

La pobreza e inferioridad nos debilitan de dos maneras. sity in America, and the trend is worse right here in the Central Valley, according to Fresno State University professor Gilberto Lopez. A number of factors contribute, but among the most important is the way that lower income and socio-economic status (SES) worsens the impact on the overweight.

Poverty and lower status weaken Latinos in two ways. First, when family finances are scarce, skimping on or completely neglecting medical care, especially preventive health and dental care, also one of the major contributors to poor school performance among children, becomes increasingly common. Furthermore, Hispanics are also twice as likely as other ethnic groups to distrust medical professionals, which incidentally, include few Hispanics, and worry about being used as unwilling “guinea pigs” in medical experiments. These concerns often keep them from getting cancer screenings and other preventive health care. Access to wholesome food and fresh fruits and vegetables is also a major problem in many of our poorest neighborhoods since unhealthy food snacks may be all that is available at liquor and convenience stores.

Add to this the stress of low status jobs, especially farm work, which can be the source of enormous anxiety, along with many other dayto-day challenges of low income living. The increasing frequency of diabetes and other stressrelated disorders in the Latino population is a direct result of these high emotional and psychological factors that can and do beat them down.

The increasing effort to contend with the health and nutrition challenges of the Latino population is reassuring. The UC Berkeley

School of Public Health has a Health Initiative for the Americas, and similar programs across the country are making important contributions. Local organizations, such as the PUENTES sustainable development organization which is developing a community farm in the Boggs Tract neighborhood here in Stockton, are also contributing by teaching children and neighbors about farm to table practices that build good health and improve the environment.

tivos. El acceso a alimentos sanos y frutas y verduras es también un gran problema entre nuestros más pobres vecindarios, dado que nocivos bocadillos son lo único que se encuentra en una tienda de licores o miscelánea.

Añadamos todo esto a la tensión de los empleos, especialmente el de la agricultura y que puede ser fuente de enorme ansiedad, junto a los otros desafíos diarios de ser de escasos recursos. El constante aumento entre la población latina de diabetes y otros males relacionados a la tensión es un resultado directo de estos factores marcadamente emocionales y sicológicos —y pueden doblegarlos… y muchas veces lo hace.

No obstante, el creciente esfuerzo que se hace por paliar los retos de la salud y nutrición entre los latinos es consolador. La Escuela de Salud Pública de la UC Berkeley tiene la Iniciativa de Salud para las Américas… programas similares están aportando bastante por todo el país. Esfuerzos locales, como PUENTES, organización de desarrollo autosostenible, que han establecido una granja comunal en el vecindario del Fraccionamiento Boggs, aquí mismo en Stockton, también contribuyen enseñando a los niños y vecinos sobre el proceso del cultivo a la mesa que traen buena salud y mejoran el medioambiente.

Sin embargo hay dos niveles donde, sin duda, se necesita más. A nivel nacional, necesitamos que se reconozca al latino como parte valiosa e integral en la sociedad, con acceso total a su protección, beneficios y oportunidades, y no sólo acceso a su explotación.

Y, a nivel personal, debemos cerciorarnos de hacernos cargo de nuestras vidas, y optar por esa nutrición sana que nos permita ascender desde el fondo bocado a bocado.

More than 700 parents and students packed Fillmore School for the MESA students’ Science Blast this month and to hear Superstar Astronaut Jose Hernandez talk about his trip to space. Mr. Hernandez attended Fillmore himself before attending Fremont Middle and Franklin High Schools.

Mr. Hernandez told the students his story: How, as the son of migrant farm workers he plotted his path to becoming an astronaut.

When he told his father, who had only a third grade education, about his dream his father told him he could probably become an astronaut, if he followed a recipe. The ingredients: recognize how far you are from your goal; get good grades and do more work, not less, than is required and draw a roadmap to how you will get there. “And I add perseverance…you can never give up,” Mr. Hernandez said.

This is Fillmore’s first year for a fabulous MESA science program. Thank you to the University of the Pacific MESA for helping out!

Fillmore students are reaching for the stars!

Escuela Fillmore Celebra las Ciencias

Este mes fueron sobre 700 los padres y estudiantes que se hicieron presentes en la Primaria Fillmore para participar en el Science Blast (Despegue de Ciencias) de los estudiantes del programa Logros en Matemáticas, Ingeniería y Ciencias (MESA por sus siglas en inglés) y escuchar al astronauta superestrella José Hernández hablar sobre su viaje al espacio.

El Sr. Hernández estudió en esta misma primaria antes de trasladarse a la Intermedia Fremont y la Secundaria Franklin. Contó a los estudiantes como él, hijo de campesinos migrantes, trazó su plan de convertirse en astronauta. Cuando le contó su plan a su

padre —quién solo había cursado tercero de primaria—éste le dijo que probablemente podía llegar a ser astronauta, siempre y cuando siguiera una receta. Los ingredientes eran: aceptar cuán lejos uno está de su meta; sacar buenas calificaciones y poner más empeño, no menos, de lo que se les pide; y dibujarse un mapa de cómo uno llegará ahí. “Y yo le añadí perseverancia… no debes rendirte nunca,” dijo el Sr. Hernández. Éste es el primer año que Fillmore tiene este fabulosos programa científico de MESA ¡Gracias a la Universidad del Pacífico por darnos una mano! ¡Los estudiantes de Fillmore están alcanzando las estrellas!

Catholic Charities Receives Major Grant From Walmart

Stockton, CA.- Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Stockton announced that it has received a major grant of $77,750 from the Walmart Foundation for its Nutrition Assistance Services.

The funds have made it possible for Catholic Charities to purchase a new van for the food pantry and to expand services to those in need in underserved areas.

“We are so very pleased and grateful that the Walmart Foundation has so generously provided these much needed funds to assist with our food bank,” said Elvira Ramirez, Executive Director of Catholic Charities. “Our nutrition assistance programs are already a strong part of the community in San Joaquin County, and this will allow us to strengthen our services that address hunger and food insecurity.

Several studies have documented the connection between food insecurity (lack of consistent access to nutritious food) and serious health problems such as malnutrition, diabetes and heart disease. Catholic Charities will combine CalFresh application assistance and SNAP-Education with the food pantry to address food insecurity in San Joaquin County. The food pantry operates out of Catholic Charities office and serves approximately 250 families each month. The new van will be used to pick-up food distributed to families. The funds will also be used to begin distribution to select rural and underserved areas, while receiving increased access to CalFresh application assistance and nutrition education in an interactive way that includes food samples and cooking demonstrations.

Caridades Católicas de la Diócesis de Stockton ha recibido una donación de la Fundación Wal-Mart por $77.750 para su Servicio de Nutrición Suplementaria. What’s in a Budget?

California’s 2013-14 Proposed Budget On January 10, Governor Jerry Brown unveiled California’s first budget without a deficit since 2007. While the massive cuts of prior years will not be easily restored, this year’s proposal aims to take some positive steps in funding education and preparing for health care expansion.

Education

Voter polling and the success of Proposition 30 in the 2012 General Election showed quite clearly that education was a top priority for Californians. Consequently, this year’s budget proposal includes increased funding at all levels of public education.

Under the plan, the CSU and UC systems would both receive an increase of $125 million each. With this funding and a multiyear plan of increases in the works, the Governor expects to keep tuition rates flat through 2016-17.

Community Colleges would also receive their share of funding. This includes $315.7 million for a new adult education block grant program, a $197.7 million apportionment increase, the restoration of $179 million owed from previous deferrals, $49.5 million in energy efficiency funding, and $16.5 million for online education improvements.

Last, but not least, K-12 education would receive a $1.89 billion increase. The state would also pay $1.8 billion back to school districts for money owed from previous years.

Furthermore, the Governor’s proposal also includes a new funding formula that would establish a base amount of funding and supplement it with additional funding for school districts in which English language learners and economically disadvantaged students exceed 50 percent of the student population.

Health

After being the first state to establish a health insurance exchange in 2010, California is quickly preparing itself for the implementation of the federal Affordable Care Act. To that end, the proposed budget includes provisions to expand Medi-Cal coverage to low-income adults at up to 138% of the federal poverty level. A $350 million expenditure is listed in the proposal for this expansion.

The proposed budget also expands MediCal to replace the Healthy Families plan, which is scheduled for elimination on September 1, 2013. Further changes and health care proposals are expected throughout the year as legislative committees and the Governor continue shaping and preparing the California health exchange.

Stockton’s Urban Agriculture

Large urban centers like San Francisco are often found at the forefront of environmental and social justice issues, but here in Stockton residents don’t have to make a trip to the bay to find civic-minded citizens Kristine Williams working within city Valley Springs, CA limits to improve their local environment. They just have to make their way to the Boggs Tract Community Farm.

Just two years ago Boggs Tract, a community located on unincorporated land south of the Port of Stockton, was widely viewed as an area to avoid. Former City Manager John Wentz described the area as “cancerous” and Boggs Tract residents have a long history of fighting to maintain their independence as a community, but all places have potential. In 2011, a local Stockton group – Puentes – decided that the Boggs Tract community was the perfect location to launch an urban farm. The group seeks to “promote the empowerment of people to grow and utilize their own food resources,” according to the Puentes website.

The Boggs Tract Community Farm embodies all that is positive about urban agriculture practices. It promotes food self-sufficiency through the provision of individual garden plots available for use to citizens. Community members are not given food; they are given the opportunity to grow their own food for themselves, their families, and their

Perhaps most important is the investment local residents make in their own community. By participating in local urban agriculture, citizens are taking ownership of their land and their city. They care for their plot, plant their seeds, tend their garden, grow their food, and harvest their product.

Food that isn’t used to supplement meals can be sold at local farmers markets. Puentes also has its own produce delivery program, Stockton Harvest, which delivers fresh foods from Boggs Tract Community Farm to homes across the city to bring in additional income.

Clearly, Stockton is not to be counted out when talking about communities with engaged citizenry. Boggs Tract Community Farm is only one of many community development activities underway in Stockton. No community should be discounted -to be described as a “cancerous” growth on the rest of the city.

This project is a perfect example of how the people of Stockton can bloom if given the opportunity.

Según su sitio virtual, Puentes busca “impulsar a la población para cultivar y aprovechar sus propias fuentes de alimentación.”

eticia de Santiago might not be well-known around Stockton’s movers and shakers, but she’s definitely known among the downtown’s elderly.

In 2008, she had volunteered for just one month at the Senior Service Agency of San Joaquin County (mostly known as Seniors First), when she saw it close its doors and leave the old and mostly lone elders without a place to eat and spend the day. She stepped in and —and with zero experience— has moved around town with their wards in tow. By the time JOAQUIN goes to print, she and some 60 seniors will be, once more, without a roof over their heads, since their days with their final benefactor is withdrawing the welcome mat. JOAQUIN asked her, J: You were born in El Salvador, were trained and worked as a health paraprofessional in Oakland. How do you end up in Stockton?

LDS: After my divorce I had some savings and decided to open a restaurant. A friend suggested Stockton. “Downtown lacks inviting places to eat at lunchtime,” he said. So in 2002 I tried my luck with the Corner Café. It lasted four years…

J: But how did your interest go from this to the concerns of seniors?

LDS: I had just volunteered with Seniors First when I saw them crying because their center was closing. You get to know them; most of these beautiful human beings have no one else in the world.

J: With neither experience or help from any organization, how you go about helping these elders?

LDS: I got great and immediate help from restaurants by feeding them: Cancun, Nena’s, Angelina’s, Tepa Taquería, La Victoria. They could and dance, as the DJ was paid for by my new husband. I started working on but was unable to establish non-profit group, but (Boys & Girls Club CEO) Anthony Silva was

J: Of all the locations where you served seniors, which was the best? The worst? Why? LDS: The Teen Center was, definitely, the best. El Concilio was the worst; I never felt welcomed here… but mis viejitos need a place.

J: What is the biggest sacrifice you have made for this cause?

LDS: I had an incident of Bell‘s Palsy…the stress, you know? Three weeks at home and back to serve my clients, every weekday, Monday through Friday, but the elders needed me.

J: What has been your greatest satisfaction? Disillusionment?

LDS: I never imagined that I could help up to 65 seniors, get to know them… this is a school for me. Disillusion? The impotence of knowing there are so many empty buildings, closed down… and no one opens a door to these old-timers.

J: How do you see yourself, your work?

LDS: I am an ordinar y human being. I see these people; they have given all they have to give and now no one cares. We will grow old too!

When I am gone, I want other people to care too. These seniors deserve to live the rest of their lives cared for.

Leticia se hizo cargo y —sin experiencia alguna— se ha ido de lugar a lugar con sus protegidos tras ella. Para el momento que esta edición de JOAQUIN haya salido a la calle, Leticia y sus aproximadamente 60 ancianos estarán, una vez más, sin un techo —su último benefactor ya les ha dado el aviso que deben irse. Podían bailar y lo hacían, gracias a un DJ pagado por mi actual marido. Comencé a formar una organización sin fines de lucro, pero Anthony Silva (entonces Director del Club de Niños y Niñas) fue una bendición del Cielo, nos consiguió el Centro Juvenil y así me hice de la experiencia necesaria.

J: De todos los locales donde ha atendido a los ancianos ¿Cuál ha sido el mejor? ¿El peor?

LDS: El Centro Juvenil fue, sin duda, el mejor. El Concilio el peor; nunca me he sentido bienvenida aquí… pero mis viejitos necesitan donde juntarse.

J: ¿Cuál ha sido el mayor sacrificio que ha hecho por esta causa?

LDS: Tuve un problema con Parálisis de Bell (parálisis facial)… la tensión, puede imaginárselo. Tres meses en casa y de vuelta a atender a mis “clientes” cada día de la semana, lunes a viernes, porque ellos me necesitan.

J: ¿Cuál ha sido su mayor satisfacción? ¿Desilusión?

LDS: Nunca imaginé que podría ayudar hasta a 65 ancianos, llegar a conocerlos… ésta sido toda una escuela para mí ¿Desilusión?

La impotencia de saber que hay tanto edificio desocupado, cerrado… y nadie abre una puerta para estos viejitos.

J: ¿Cómo se ve usted? ¿La obra que hace?

LDS: Soy una persona normal. Veo a esta gente que ha dado todo lo que tenían que dar y ahora no le importan a nadie ¡Todos vamos a envejecer! Cuando ya no esté, quiero que a otra gente le preocupe todo esto. Estos ancianitos merecen que los atiendan por lo que les queda de vida.

We tend to ignore the beauty of our surroundings in our fast paced society.

We email our messages instead of writing them. We text our conversations instead of speaking to each other. We amuse ourselves with technology, instead of enjoying a silent moment with nature or in the presence of our loved ones. “Mestiza” is a term for a young girl with hazel green eyes and dark skin, depicting the beauty of two cultures, Spanish and Indigenous.

Unspoken Beauty

It is an unspoken beauty that does not need words to explain what we feel when we encounter love, peace, tranquility, simplicity, color, contrast of light, strength, vitality, roughness, age, and life and death. Nature also provides this unspoken beauty that sometimes cannot be explained or defined through words.

“Bare Eucalyptus” and “Night and Day” are two pieces that have been inspired by nature. These two works are part of a collection of art pieces inspired by nature that will be in an up and coming exhibition in May at The Mexican Heritage Center.

¡Evite las comidas procesadas y sus dientes se lo agradecerán!

verybody complains about the cost of going to the dentist; but what if I could give you some valuable information that would reduce your need for unnecessary and costly dental treatments? Wouldn’t it be great to have a dental exam with no cavities and no need for further treatment; just routine exams? The key is prevention through daily flossing and tooth brushing along with eating more alkaline foods! Yes, something as simple as modifying your diet can greatly enhance your dental health. It is well known that too much acidity creates inflammation in the body leading to a whole host of inflammatory diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension to name a few.

Dental caries and periodontal disease also occur because of inflammation. For the most part, we all know what causes dental caries: refined or processed foods that bacteria feed on produce waste products that are acidic. The acids then attack and weaken tooth structure leading to cavities. And the more frequently you consume these processed foods, the more weakened your teeth become.

Let’s look at the typical American diet. We enjoy our pasta, bread, crackers, cookies and desserts, along with hot dogs, sausages, or ham.

What do they all have in common? They are refined and processed foods! Now you combine them with soda, coffee and perhaps alcohol and you have just created an ideal acidic environment for cavities or dental caries to form. Not only are these foods converted to sugar that bacteria feed on, but they also produce acid in your body. A vicious cycle is created.

So how do we turn this around? Well, consider foods low in acidity. It turns out mostly everything in its natural form is better for you, more alkaline and less acidic; so eating avocados, cucumber, cabbage, carrots, sweet potatoes and other vegetables and fruits will do you a world of good. And surprisingly, even lemons and limes are not acidic once you consume them. You just want to be careful not to suck on limes or lemons because they can wear away natural tooth structure. It’s better to drink lemon or lime juice through a straw.

We all know that soda is high in sugar, but many may not be aware that it is also high in acidity. High soda consumption wreaks havoc with your teeth and overall health. Every sip bathes the tooth with acid and if the ideal

Algo tan simple como cambiar un poco su dieta puede mejorar sustancialmente su salud dental. Es bien sabido que demasiada acidez crea inflamaciones en el cuerpo y que lleva a males inflamatorios como la diabetes, problemas cardiacos e hipertensión, por nombrar algunos.

Ahora, si los combinamos con sodas, café… hemos creado el perfecto medioambiente ácido para que se formen las caries.

Estas comidas no sólo proveen el azúcar del que se alimenta la bacteria sino que también producen ácidos en su cuerpo y así comienza un círculo vicioso.

Pero ¿Cómo se puede revertir todo esto? se preguntará. Bueno, considere alimentos bajos en ácidos. Y casi todo en su estado natural es mejor para usted, más alcalina y menos acidez; comer aguacates, pepinos, repollos, zanahorias, papas dulces y otras verduras y frutas le hará mucho bien. Y, aunque le sorprenda, los limones y limas no son ácidos una vez que se consumen… sólo tiene que cuidarse de chuparlos porque desgastan la estructura dental natural. Es mejor beber el jugo de limas y limones con popote.

What are some healthier alternatives to desserts, cakes, or cookies?

Try adding raisins, dates, grapes, or apples with almond butter into your diet for a change, or how about sprinkling some honey, coconut and granola on your plain yogurt. There are so many wonderful fresh foods available the possibilities are endless!

If you continue to limit your consumption of processed foods and soda, not only will your dental health improve, but your overall health as well. Think about it. Wouldn’t you rather spend your money on healthy foods rather than on that cavity or root canal that could have been prevented by making better choices? Not to mention the cost of medications or antibiotics required to alleviate pain or avoid spread of infection. Imagine how much you could save! It really doesn’t have to get to this point. Spend your money wisely on healthier foods and your teeth will thank you for it!

Trate de escuchar a su cuerpo… éste le avisa cuando come algo que no le cae bien ¿le recuerda algo esa acidez estomacal? ¿Qué alternativas hay a los postres, pasteles o galletas? Trate de variar su dieta agregándole pasas, dátiles, uvas o manzanas con mantequilla de almendra, o ¿qué tal rociar su yogurt natural con miel, coco o cereal? Hay tantos maravillosos alimentos frescos disponibles ¡que las alternativas son interminables!

Si continúa limitando el consumo de alimentos procesados y de sodas, no solo mejorará su salud dental, sino también la de su cuerpo en general. Piense… ¿No le saldría más a cuenta gastar su dinero en alimentos sanos que en esa carie o endodoncia que se podía haber prevenido seleccionando mejor lo que come? Eso sin mencionar los medicamentos y antibióticos para aliviar los dolores o evitar la propagación de una infección ¡Imagine cuánto se puede ahorrar! Pero no tenemos que llegar hasta ese punto. “hang out” in Cyberville. I illustrate how their kids leave an electronic footprint on sites like Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter. I glance around and immediately spot that look all parents of teenagers recognize. It’s that guilty face our teenagers make when they are busted: “Whaaaat?”

At this time, we do a little refresher and I remind parents of Quetzal Mama Principle #10: Be Large and In-Charge. I use my own example of being a “large and in-charge” parent by sharing how I did not allow my kids have a Facebook account until they were adults.

Nope, not even the so-called “private” page. I also share how my husband and I strategically placed our kid’s computer in a highly visible location. Their computer was out in the open, on a table in our busy hallway. Ouch! I know that’s harsh for some teenagers. However, we set these boundaries to ensure our kids were not wasting study time, and to ensure they were not visiting inappropriate websites. Homework was the first priority, period.

The profile doesn’t culminate the moment your kids receive college admission letters.

It will continue throughout college, graduate school, and as they enter the job market. Now that two of my three children are in college, they continue to appreciate the importance of their Cyber Profile. In fact, let me share a recent example of how this profile came into play for a competitive summer internship.

Our daughter was selected to participate in a competitive surgical internship at a renowned medical research institution. While in the program, Gabi had the opportunity to have lunch with one of the program directors.

During their lunch discussion, the Director referenced something in Gabi’s background that was not disclosed in her applicant materials. She curiously asked the Director, “How did you know that?” In a matter of fact tone, the Director said, “We googled you.”

If you have teenagers on a pathway to college, I hope you will appreciate the importance of helping them protect their Cyber Profile. More importantly, I hope you will be proactive in strategizing and designing a positive profile for your children. Perfil Cibernético. Es porque comienzo a mostrarles a los padres donde sus chicos frecuentan el mundo virtual. Les muestro como van dejando “huellas” en sitios como Tumblr, Facebook y Twitter. Miro alrededor e inmediatamente reconozco esa mirada que padres y adolescentes ponen cuando éstos últimos son “pillados” En este punto les recordaré a los padres el principio QuetzalMama #10: “Ser Grande y en Control”. Utilizo mi propio ejemplo de padre “grande y en control” contándoles como no permití que mis hijos tuviesen una página de Facebook hasta que fueron adultos. No. Ni siquiera una de esas “privadas” También les comparto cómo mi esposo y yo ubicamos su ordenador en donde todos podíamos ver en qué estaba. Sé que es un poquito fuerte para algunos adolescentes, sin embargo necesitamos establecer límites para que nuestros niños no pierdan tiempo de estudiar y que no estén visitando sitios virtuales inapropiados. Las tareas son la primera prioridad, punto.

El perfil no concluye en el momento que sus hijos reciben sus cartas de la universidad. Continuarán a través de su bachillerato, la maestría, y cuando entren al mundo laboral. Ahora que dos de mis tres

hijos están en la universidad continúan apreciando la importancia de su perfil universitario; de hecho, déjenme compartirles un ejemplo reciente en el que un perfil jugó un papel en un codiciado internado veraniego. If Only We Had Waited a Little Longer Si se hubiese esperado un poquito más

One of life’s supreme ironies lies in our feeble, human efforts to figure out exactly why things happen in our world, and we will go to absurd extremes to assign “reasons” for them.

I was in college when a bunch of us bohemian, art students were sitting around at a friend’s apartment, drinking cheap wine at and watching one of those South Sea Hollywood movies, so popular back in the 50’s and 60’s In this one, a ship crashes on the reef of South Pacific island, and a White man, half-drowned, is rescued by a tribe of Natives. He is dragged to safety and slowly nursed back to life. Neither he nor the primatives understand one another’s languages.

When his health returns, he quickly catches the eye of the beautiful, luscious, dark-skinned Chief’s daughter, who has been his nurse throughout his ordeal. She, of course is also taken by this handsome, mysterious White Man, but the Chief makes no bones about the unspoken edict that he is not to mess around with his precious child, since both are from two different worlds. Regardless, their passions get the best of them and they sneak embraces and forbidden smooches in the bushes behind the coconut trees.

One day, the dormant volcano on the island suddenly erupts, and the Natives go berserk! The castaway looks with wonder at the mayhem. The Chief calls an emergency town house meeting, but all their banter is but gibberish to him. Suddenly, the daughter approaches the father and he looks deeply into her eyes, then at rolls his eyes toward the volcano. As she bows her head submissively, the significance of glance and the body language slowly dawns on the White Man: She will be sacrificed to quell the anger of the volcano!!

He rushes towards her, in an effort to stop this primitive madness, but the villagers quickly subdue and lash him to a coconut tree.

With tears in her eyes, as she obediently makes her way up the volcano, she looks down passionately at him. He lunges towards her, but to no avail! The beating drums begin to reach a crescendo. Higher and higher up the slope she edges. This is madness!! When she reaches the cone, it is furiously sputtering molten lava high into the skies, and she gazes longingly, one final time, at her forbidden lover below. “No! No! No!!” He cries.

But it is too late. She leaps into the volcano and a gigantic plume emerges. In moments, the volcano emits one last belch... and subsides! The White man collapses in shock.

There is a long and awkward silence in the

Una de las ironías más grandes de la vida emana de nuestros tímidos y humanos esfuerzos por explicarnos el porqué de las cosas y a los extremos a los que llegamos para asignarles “una razón” Estaba en la universidad y nos encontrábamos —un grupo de bohemios estudiantes de arte— reunidos en el departamento de un amigo, bebiendo vino barato y mirando una película sobre los mares del sur al estilo Hollywood, tan populares en los 1950s y 1960s.

En ésta, un barco encalla en el arrecife de una isla del Pacífico Sur y un blanco, medio ahogado, es rescatado por una tribu de nativos. Lo salvan y lo curan hasta que se recupera. Ni los primitivos ni él entienden el lenguaje del otro.

Cuando recupera su salud, no demora en interesarse en la bella y lujuriante morena —hija del jefe—que le ha cuidado durante su convalecencia. Repentinamente, la hija del Jefe se acerca a su padre y éste la mira profundamente, para luego volver los ojos al volcán. Cuando la joven baja los ojos en sumisión, el significado de todo lo que está pasando, la mirada, los movimientos, hacen entender al hombre blanco: ¡La sacrificarán para aplacar la furia del volcán! Tratando de detener esa locura primitiva se abalanza hacia ella, pero los nativos inmediatamente lo dominan y amarran a una palmera.

Ella, con lágrimas en los ojos asciende obedientemente hacia el volcán, y se vuelve a mirarlo apasionadamente. Él trata de liberarse para seguirla ¡pero no puede! El tañer de los tambores crece y ella sube y sube ¡Todo es locura! Cuando llega a la boca del volcán —que escupe ardiente lava hacia los cielos— da una última mirada a su amante allá abajo. “¡No! ¡No! ¡¡No!!” grita él. Pero ya es demasiado tarde. Ella salta dentro del volcán y de éste emerge una gigante nube. En unos momentos, el volcán da un último rugido… ¡y se calla! El blanco cae, impresionado.

Se produjo un incómodo silencio en el departamento. De repente, uno de mis amigos murmura, “por Dios, si se hubiese esperado unos cinco minutos más ¡¡tal vez el volcán se hubiera apagado solo!!”

Como el volcán, todos hicimos una erupción, pero de risa… revolcándonos en la sucia alfombra, riéndonos hasta que nos dolió el estómago. “Qué pérdida” alguien más murmuró y nos volvimos a entregar a la risa. room. That’s what he told his mother, Refugio. She, in turn, told her sister, Emilia, who burst into anger saying “That’s ridiculous. That old fart is never happy; he’s just bitter! Era la primera vez que Refugio visitaba la escuela de su hijo. Cuando se entrevistó con el maestro, no preguntó acerca del aprendizaje, la enseñanza o por algún informe académico.

Ella solamente se limitó a preguntar: ¿Cómo se ha portado mi hijo?

Xicoténcatl aprovechó el momento para destazarlo. Le mostró la boleta de Felipe. Específicamente le señaló con el índice el cuadro correspondiente al conducta. Era un cinco de reprobado, el peor. Un cinco rojo, escrito encima del anterior infinidad de veces. Era una de las armas que Xicoténcatl usaba para castigar a sus alumnos. Para Refugio ésa era la peor humillación. Le atormentaba enfrentar a la gente y dar la noticia de que su hijo tenía cinco en conducta. “¿Qué tiene? le decía Emilia, “todos los niños se portan mal ¿Cómo crees que está enfermo? a mí también me salía sangre de la nariz cuando estaba chica; pero era por el calor. Lo que necesita es una limpia, es aire lo que tiene. A ver, Felipillo, ven pa’cá. ¡Ándale, Refugio, dame un huevo de a’i!”

Emilia restregaba la cara de Felipe con el polo más puntiagudo del huevo. Lo agarraba con las cinco yemas de los dedos de la mano derecha, exactamente en el ecuador del óvalo.

Ella aseguraba que cualquier movimiento en falso bastaba para arruinar tan delicado proceso. Y lo más importante, una vez iniciada la tarea, el huevo no debía detenerse ni dejar de hacer contacto con la piel. Emilia le había hecho el mismo menjurje miles de veces, porque eran las gentes que le provocaban el mal aire, decía, y por eso se portaba mal. “Y si ese méndigo Xicote te pone un cinco, de huevo a huevo te lo voy sacando.”

She continued down the cheek, under the mandible crossing, to the other side of the face, up to the right cheekbone, orbiting the eye in the opposite direction, and back to the starting point. From there, she continued down the ridge of the nose, touching the lips, the chin, and all the way down to the larynx.

She would immediately return to the starting point to repeat the process thirteen times, without interruption. After it was over, Refugio would bring to Emilia a glass of water, half-full, so she could crack the egg and put it in the glass. “Do you see those little white threads like veins?” Emilia would ask. “That’s the evil spell. You’ll be all right now. “ “Come on, Felipon,now tell me what they teach you in school.” “They teach us how to hold the book,” Felipe said. “And how is that?”

Emilia asked. Felipe took the book to show his aunt the correct way to hold a book to read out loud. It had to be done with one hand, the right hand, as Xicotencatl would say. “How you handle a book shows if you’re truly educated.

When opening the book, the three middle fingers, the index, middle and ring remain underneath, out of sight to the reader. At the same time, the thumb, as well as the pinky, stays on top of the page.”

But a textbook, for a ten year old child, was huge, so the pages on both sides would flop. To be able to read, Felipe would lean his head to one side trying to decipher words than seemed to be running away from him. He tried to straighten the book as much as possible, but it would slam shut on him. “Is that what they teach you?” asked Emilia, “Oh, Refugio, can you believe that…? How is that possible? How is he going to learn to read like that? Let’s see, mi’jo, hold the book with both hands.” “How?” he asked. “Anyway you can, one hand on one side and another hand on the other, come on.”

Felipe stumbled through the words, stuttering.

His eyes jumped from one syllable to another awkwardly; he skipped over consonants as well as vowels; he added and missing letters; he repeated parts of words, like a broken record. Emilia and Refugio looked at each other incredulously. Until now, they had never questioned whether or not Felipe knew how to read.

They were saddened. Placing her hand on Refugio’s chest, to stop her before she could say a word, she blurted “Look at your nails, mi’jo, they’re completely black; you use your fingers to clean up the blood from your nose, right?”

Felipe had spent hours at night killing bedbugs. A small flashlight helped him to see the area of the operation. They were everywhere: in the cracks of the walls, corners and, especially, at the mattress’ seams. It was here, 22 Joaquín FEBRUARY 2013

he spent most of his attention: he lifted them and there they were, almost invisible, little red dots. At first it was difficult to get them off. That’s why he would smash them with his fingernails right then and there. With time, the procedure became more sophisticated: he pinched the bedbugs with a needle to get them out of their lethargic state. At times, there was only one bedbug; other times, there were two or three. Soon he realized that when there were more than three was because they were unwilling to let go of their mother. The bugs went crazy, kicking the air. He smashed them one by one with his fingertips: between the index and thumb. To him it was some it released some sort of vengeance —while pressing a bug he would say to himself: “I will have to scratch like crazy from your bite, so you must die!”

He also noticed something extraordinary, like a fantasy. As he smashed them, he saw them reproducing right before his eyes. It must have been true because he killed bedbugs at the same location for several nights. Felipe never revealed this secret to anyone; he kept it to himself. Refugio, who had noticed blood stains on the sheets, had always associated it with her son’s nose bleeding.

However, what Felipe did tell his aunt was how Xicotencatl treated his students at school.

Very often the teacher left the classroom. Just like Emilia and the rest of the people assured, he spent hours at the crossroads cantina, La Nueva Luz, until late in the afternoon, downing quantities of Cuba Libres with the principal and other colleagues. No one knew exactly when he was in the classroom. He would suddenly show up and, if any kid was not in his place, he was punished. Felipe was not the only one to get it. But when he did, the teacher grabbed him by the ear or sideburn, lifted him up in the air and dragged him around the classroom all the way to his seat.

With the wooden side of the eraser, he smacked their fingertips. “Put your fingertips together!” he demanded, and down came the blow. If they moved, they were hit twice. Sometimes, he had them extend their palm and hit them with the meter-long ruler, on the knuckles or on their buttocks; that’s why they nicknamed him Don Xicote. If he was not content with that punishment, he’d drag the kid to his desk and, right before their eyes, would write and boldly engrave a big red FIVE on their transcript. For the kids, that was more hurtful than getting hit with any ruler. “Damned old man,” Emilia said, “but tomorrow he’ll hear from me.”

The next day, Xicotencatl decided to teach arithmetic. “Class, today we’ll be working on two-digit division. Teresa, go to the board,” he ordered. But no one knew her by the name,”Teresa”. She was known to them

as Teresita. She tended to the clients at the tiendita (a small general store). “What would you like today, ma’am?” She’d ask. “Teresita, give me a kilo of sugar, a half kilo of beans, a quarter kilo of rice, a half dozen eggs…”

Teresita added, subtracted, and multiplied, dividing it all in her head, while she packed everything in paper cones. She took the money and gave back the exact change, never making a mistake. When it came to arithmetic, there was no one better than Teresita. “Thank you so much, Teresita, you’re so kind” they’d say.

Teresita was, without a doubt, the best student to begin the day’s lesson manipulating numbers. But suddenly, the suffix “ita” was gone, vanished. She stood still at the board, and there, before everybody’s eyes, Teresita became just plain Teresa. That was her demise: it was her Scarlet Letter.

Noticing that the girl would not respond, Xicotencatl grew angry. He called on a boy from third grade, who solved the problem on the board in five seconds , then sat down. “How is it possible that a third grader knows more that a bunch of fifth grades like yourselves?! You should be ashamed; you’re all useless!”He kept on yelling. “Back to your seat!” he told Teresa.

Humiliated, she sat down; however, she did not attend school the next day, or ever again; in fact, she never tended to any more clients, either. She was never seen again. Now, more upset than ever, Xicotencatl called upon another student.

“Ramon, go up to the board!” “No.” he retorted.

“What do you mean, no!?” asked Xicotencatl.

He walked to Ramon’s seat and grabbed him by his ear. The poor kid struggled in pain, but did not cry out. As soon as he was released, he ran to the door, turned and yellrf with all his might: “F… you!” and disappeared. At that precise moment, Emilia entered the classroom. Still in shock, Xicotencatl looked at her. All eyes were on him now. Emilia said simply: “I just came to tell you the exact same thing, teacher, but Ramon beat me to the punch!”

Years later, Felipe decided seek his fortune faraway. After many attempts to make him change his mind, Emilia had no choice but to accept her nephew’s decision. “Listen to me, Felipe,” she told him, “promise me that you will never forget about us.” Felipe looked at her and without hesitating, said: “No I won’t, aunt; I may be leaving, but my blood stays here.”

A ver, Felipón, dime ¿qué te enseñan en la escuela?”“Nos enseñan cómo tomar el libro,” dijo Felipe. “¿Y cómo lo tomas?” replicó Emilia. Felipe tomó el libro para mostrarle a su tía la forma correcta de sostener un libro para leerlo en voz alta. Tenía que ser a una mano, la derecha, como decía Xicoténcatl, porque la verdadera educación se muestra con el libro en la mano. Al abrir el libro, los tres dedos de en medio: el índice, el cordial y el anular quedaban abajo, fuera de la vista del lector. Mientras que el pulgar y el meñique hacían el cuerno. El libro de texto, para un niño de diez años, era inmenso. De modo que las hojas a ambos lados del libro se desparramaban, como cascadas. Para poder leer, Felipe inclinaba la cabeza de lado intentando interceptar las palabras, que parecían irse en picada. Trataba de enderezar el libro para corregir la postura, pero el libro se cerraba sin avisar. “¡Éso te enseñan! decía Emilia, ay, Refugio, vas a creer… Cómo es posible, cómo va poder leer así. A ver, hijo, agarra el libro con las dos manos.” “¿Cómo?” preguntó. “Como quieras, una mano de un lado; y la otra, del otro, dale.” Felipe empezó a leer a trompicones.

Tartamudeaba. Los ojos de Felipe brincaban de una sílaba a otra sin fluidez. Cambiaba consonantes tanto como vocales; aumentaba o eliminaba letras; iba y venía como disco rayado.

Emilia y Refugio se miraron incrédulas. Hasta entonces no se les había ocurrido averiguar si el niño sabía leer o no. Entristecieron. Emilia puso la mano sobre el pecho de Refugio para intervenir primero. “Mira lo negras que traes las uñas, mijo, te limpias la sangre de la nariz con los dedos, ¿verdad?”

Felipe pasaba horas matando chinches durante la noche. Con una pequeña linterna iluminaba el sitio de la operación. Las encontraba en cualquier parte: en las ranuras de la pared, en las esquinas ysobre todo entre las costuras, en el borde del colchón. Era ahí donde consumía la mayor parte de su tiempo.

Levantaba el borde y ahí estaban, unos puntitos rojos casi imperceptibles. Al principio era difícil sacarlas. Por eso las reventaba en el mismo sitio con las uñas de los dedos. Poco a poco fue refinando el procedimiento: con una aguja las pinchaba para levantarlas de su letargo. A veces era una sola chinche, a veces dos o tres. Pronto se dio cuenta que cuando eran más de tres, era porque no estaban dispuestas a separarse de la madre. Notaba cómo pataleaban en el aire, enloquecidas. Las reventaba

una a una con las yemas de los dedos: el índice y el pulgar. Para él era como una venganza puesto que al momento que las apachurraba pensaba: “si me tengo que rascar con odio el piquete que me diste ¡muere!” También notaba algo que le parecía extraordinario, como una fantasía. Al mismo tiempo que las reventaba, veía que las chinches se reproducían ante sus ojos. Seguramente era cierto porque pasaba varias noches en el mismo sitio matando las mismas chinches. Felipe jamás le reveló a nadie esa tarea nocturna; guardó el secreto toda su vida. Refugio, quien observaba las huellas de sangre entre las sábanas, siempre las asoció con las fosas nasales.

Lo que Felipe sí le contó a su tía fue cómo los trataba Xicoténcatl en clase. El maestro salía del salón muy a menudo. Tal y como decía Emilia y el resto de la gente, se pasaba hasta altas horas de la tarde en La Nueva Luz, la cantina de la glorieta, junto con el director y otros colegas, consumiendo cubas libres a más no poder. No se sabía exactamente cuando estaba en clase. El hecho es que de pronto aparecía y, al primer niño que no estuviera en su lugar, le venía el castigo. Felipe no era el único, pero cuando le tocaba, el maestro lo prendía de la patilla unas veces y otras de la oreja. Lo levantaba y se lo llevaba casi flotando por todo el salón, pataleando desesperado —como él hacía con las chiches— hasta sentarlo en el lugar que le correspondía. Con la parte dura del borrador les asestaba un golpazo en las yemas de los dedos. Junta todos los dedos, les decía, y ¡zas! Si movían la mano les ponía dos borradorazos. Otras veces les ordenaba extender la palma de la mano. Con la regla de un metro, les plasmaba un golpetazo seco ¡plas! A veces era en el dorso de la mano y otras en las nalgas; por eso le apodaban Don Xicote. Si no quedaba contento con el castigo, llevaba a los niños a su escritorio. Ahí, enfrente de ellos, escribía con tinta roja un cinco en conducta marcado y remarcado. Los niños quedaban más dolidos por eso que por la golpiza. “Diantre de viejo,” decía Emilia, “pero mañana me las paga.”

Al otro día, Xicoténcatl decidió enseñar aritmética. “Vamos a trabajar con divisiones de dos cifras, Teresa, pasa al pizarrón,” exclamó. ¡Madre santísima! ¡Teresa, Teresa! ¡Dios

mío¡ Nadie la conocía por Teresa. Ella era Teresita. Ella atendía a los clientes en la tiendita. “¿Qué le vamos a dar hoy, marchantita?” decía ella. “Teresita, dame un kilo de azúcar, medio de frijoles, un cuarto de arroz, media docena de huevos…” Teresita sumaba, restaba, multiplicaba, dividía todo en su cabeza, mientras envolvía y cerraba cucuruchos. Recibía el dinero y daba el cambio exacto sin equivocarse jamás. Nadie le ganaba a Teresita a hacer cuentas. “Muchas gracias, Teresita, eres muy amable,” le decían. Era entonces la más indicada para comenzar el día manipulando números.

Pero, de pronto, el ita se fue, se esfumó. Ella se quedó inmóvil frente a la pizarra. Ahí, ante la mirada expectante de todos, Teresita se convirtió en Teresa a secas. Eso la marcó para toda su vida: fue como su “Letra Escarlata”.

Al ver que la niña no respondía, Xicoténcatl se ensañó. Mandó llamar un niño de tercer año. El niño llegó, realizó la operación en cinco segundos y se fue. “¡¿Cómo es posible que un alumno de tercero sepa más que ustedes de quinto?! ¡Les debería dar vergüenza, son unos inútiles!” gritaba. “¡Siéntate!” le gritó a Teresa.

Ella humillada, regresó a su lugar; pero no volvió a la escuela al otro día , ni al siguiente , ni jamás, ni atender a los clientes en la tiendita.

Se encerró para siempre y nunca se supo más de ella. Más enojado que nunca, Xocoténcatl llamó al próximo alumno, “Ramón, pasa al pizarrón.” “No,” dijo él. “¿Cómo que no?” dijo Xicoténcatl, fue hasta donde se encontraba Ramón y lo levantó de la oreja. El pobre niño atragantó el dolor mientras pataleaba como chinche. En cuanto lo soltó, el niño corrió hacia la puerta, giró y, en un grito de rabia le dijo: “Ch… tu madre”, y se fue. Justo en ese momento, apareció Emilia. Xicoténcatl aún no salía de su asombro cuando la vio entrar.

Ahora todas las miradas lo enfocaban. Emilia simplemente dijo, “Venía a decirte lo mismo, pero el niño se me adelantó.”

Años después, Felipe había decidido irse a buscar fortuna. Después de muchas intentonas para hacerlo desistir, a Emilia no le quedó otra alternativa que aceptar la decisión de su sobrino. “Mira, Felipe,” le dijo, “prométeme que no te vas a olvidar de nosotros…” Felipe la miró y le dijo sin titubear: “mire, tía, me voy, sí, pero aquí se queda mi sangre.”

Pressing Candentes Chicano temas ChicanoPolitical Issues políticos

In this the 6th issue of Joaquin Magazine I have chosen not to write about a new and popular Hispanic book as I usually do, but to comment on some burning issues facing the Hispanic community today.

According to the media, the Hispanic community overwhelmingly turned out and voted President Barrack Obama into his second term of office. At the same time, while supporting the president, the Hispanic community was extremely critical of his poor record on immigration reform and the high number of Hispanics deported.

Jess Cervantes in his article “Coconuts and the Waking Giant” buys into the stereotype that Hispanics —primarily Mexicans and Chicanos— have been hiding in the closet waiting for the white man to save us.

The Mexican community has historically had to combat, as in war, the aggressive “Manifest Destiny” actions of illegal Euro-Americans coming into and stealing the Southwest. The Norteamericanos even write and brag about their deeds i.e. the Bear Flag Revolt into Monterey, California; the Foreign Miners Act in Sonora, California, and the lynching of numerous Mexicans who resisted, Joaquin Murrieta, Tiburcio Vasquez, Elfego Baca and Juanita, the first woman hung in California, what a first honor! Mexicans in the Southwest from 1800 to the present have been organizing and resisting the stealing of our land, culture and language all contrary to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the 1st Constitution of the State of California that provided for a translator for a bilingual legislator and ballot.

Now, in 2013 and the beginning of a new term for President Obama, we see on the battlefield, foot soldiers for Dreamers, DACA, and an army of concerned citizens preparing to battle immigration reform and a pathway for legalization and citizenship.

We even read Dr. Gene Bigler’s article on disconnect and the creation of a new bilingual education program, a fight we have fought since the 1950’s when national Latino organizations such as LULAC, MAPA, and others took up the fight to save our youth through a meaningful education system.

A larger battle is one that the Pew Hispanic Research Center in Washington D.C. has recently studied. “The Path Not Taken” documents the number of legal Hispanic 24 Joaquín FEBRUARY 2013

San Joaquin Murrieta Se asegura que los Library hispanoamericanos se volcaron en masa a las urnas electorales y votaron para que Barack Obama sirviese otro periodo presidencial.

Aunque apoyaron al presidente, la comunidad hispana estaba muy molesta con su gestión sobre una reforma inmigratoria como también del alto número de deportados latinos.

En su artículo “Los Cocos y el Gigante Dormido” Jess Cervantes cae en el estereotipo que los hispanos —primariamente mexicanos y chicanos— han estado escondidos en un closet esperando que un blanco nos salve.

Históricamente, la comunidad mexicana ha tenido que luchar —como en una guerra— las agresivas políticas del “Destino Manifiesto” de ilegales euroamericanos llegando y adueñándose del Sudoeste. Los norteamericanos incluso escriben y fanfarronean sobre sus actos, como la Bear FlagRebellion (Revuelta de la Bandera del Oso Pardo, primer intento de anexar California a los EEUU) en Monterey, California; el Decreto de Mineros Extranjeros en Sonora, California; y el linchamiento de numerosos mexicanos que resistieron, Joaquín Murieta, Tiburcio Vásquez, Elfego Baca, y Juanita —la primera mujer en ser ahorcada en California ¡qué honor! Desde los 1800s al presente, los mexicanos en el Suroeste se han organizado y resistido al robo de nuestra tierra, cultura y lenguaje, lo que se contrapone al Tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo y la primera Constitución del Estado de California que contemplaba un intérprete para un legislador bilingüe y para el voto.

Hoy, en el 2013 y en el comienzo de un nuevo periodo para el presidente Obama, vemos en el campo de batalla a la infantería de los Dreamers, DACA y un ejército de diligentes ciudadanos preparado la batalla de la reforma inmigratoria, del camino a la legalización y a la ciudadanía.

Incluso leemos el artículo del Dr. Gene Bigler sobre la desconexión y la creación de un nuevo programa de educación bilingüe,

Where do immigrants go to learn English? If they are under 18, they can enroll in a public high school that hopefully has a quality ESL, English as a Second Language Program. If they are over 18, they can attend an under-funded, under-staffed, and over populated ESL program at an adult school, whose funding has been siphoned off to be used elsewhere. This is what has happened at Tracy Adult School where the programs have been severely crippled. So Juan or Juanita

will not learn English, will continue to speak eSpanish, will not become a citizen, and will never fire off that ballot.

For the past 2 years I have been reading Latinos and the Nation’s Future, an excellent and up to date book edited by Henry G. Cisneros, where he presents a Hispanic 15 year timeline (pg 15): 1. I will be English proficient but free to speak Spanish 2. I will be self-sufficient, not depend on the government 3. I will work to have a family health plan, a savings account, and a retirement plan 4. I will save to buy and own my home 5. I will have created an environment where my children will have the ability to achieve their highest potential 6. My children will be on the road to college or vocational school 7. I will participate in civic, community, or religious activities 8. I will become an American citizen or hold dual citizenship 9. I was born Mexican and I will always be Mexican 10. I will own a piece of the American Dream

E D I TOR I ALS lucha que hemos dado desde los 1950s cuando organizaciones latinas nacionales como LULAC, MAPA y otras se pusieron a la tarea de salvar a nuestra juventud a través de un sistema educacional que valiera la pena.

Una batalla mayor es la que el Centro Pew de Estudios Hispanos en Washington, D.C. ha analizado últimamente. “El Paso Que No Se Da” es el número de residentes hispanos legales, 64% de 5,4 millones, quienes no reclaman la ciudadanía que les permitiría blandir su voto y hacerse escuchar al tiempo de elegir representantes que encabecen la lucha contra nuestros problemas. “Chin…” sí son un montón de votos. Veintiséis por ciento de aquellos residentes elegibles para ciudadanía dijeron que su principal impedimento para solicitarla es que no dominan el idioma inglés. En el 2009 —durante una sesión especial de la legislatura para tratar el impacto de la crisis económica en la educación californiana, ésta levantó la restricción de uso a fondos categóricos para la educación adulta, permitiéndole a los distritos escolares utilizarlos para cualquier otro propósito.

Sí. La graduación de Secundaria o el Diploma de Educación General (GED) te hace candidato para las Fuerzas Armadas, y también abre las puertas al mundo del trabajo y los empleos. ¿Dónde aprenden inglés los inmigrantes?

Si tienen menos de 18 años se pueden matricular en cualquier secundaria que, ojalá, tenga un buen programa de Inglés como Segunda Lengua. Si son mayores, pueden asistir a una escuela para adultos falta de personal, sobrecargada de alumnos, y cuyos fondos han sido desviados para otros usos. Es lo que ha ocurrido en la Escuela de Adultos de Tracy donde los programas han sido reducidos al mínimo. Así ni Juan ni Juanita aprenderán inglés, continuarán hablando eSpanish, no se harán ciudadanos, y nunca llenarán ese voto.

Por los últimos dos años he estado leyendo Latinos y el Futuro de la Nación, un excelente y actualizado libro escrito por Henry G. Cisneros. En la página 11, Cisneros presenta el calendario hispano para 15 años: 1. Dominaré el inglés pero seré libre de hablar español 2. Seré autosuficiente, no dependeré del gobierno 3. Trabajaré para tener seguro médico, una cuenta de ahorros y un plan de jubilación 4. Ahorraré para comprar y pagar totalmente mi casa 5. Crearé un ambiente donde mis hijos puedan desarrollarse al máximo 6. Mis hijos irán camino a la universidad o una escuela vocacional

I remember clearly when I first heard these words, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the Unites States of America…”

It was kindergarten 1965, Henderson Village Elementary. Those words seemed odd to me because even as a young boy I knew that I was different. You were either a child of the farmer or the farm worker. I was Mexican, and therefore considered to be of the lower Jess Cervantes Jr. class, regardless Political Consultant of our economic or Lodi, CA educational status.

There was nothing in between. I suppose it was then that I began the struggle to prove that I was worthy, capable, and strong enough to break through those barriers to find equality. Pledging allegiance to anything other than my family just seemed a little weird; nonetheless, the words flowed effortlessly.

In retrospect, I would have thought that as a young boy these words “…and to the republic for which it stands….”

would have begged a thousand questions. I remember asking myself, “What does that mean?” I was in high school before those words even had a small meaning to me.

Maybe it was history or government class, the debates and discussions of World War II, the Korean conflict, or the still burning embers of the Vietnam War. Regardless, I began to believe that this great country of ours, a government of the people, by the people and for the people was ours, all of ours.

These words made more sense to me as a young boy coming of age in the 1970’s “…one nation under God, indivisible….”

With many of my family being veterans or active in the military, eventually the words “one nation” would have meaning to me.

Sunday Mass, Catechism, statues of the Virgin de Guadalupe, porcelains of the Last Supper, the face of Jesus, and crosses were scattered throughout my home. There was an endless faith that seemed to shield and protect us against the ugliness of hate and discrimination. “God, indivisible” was clearer than day to me.

I registered for the draft with a sense of responsibility. The war and the draft were over; nonetheless, it felt good to step up and take part. I am pretty sure I registered to vote at the age of 18. Patriotism was passed to me by my father, who despite the struggles, discrimination, and obstacles that faced him and us, held a strong sense of patriotism and responsibility to this great country of ours. I did not fully understand it, but I followed his lead. Then came my 20’s and these words gave me pride and hope “…with liberty and justice…” History has proven far continues on next page

too often that these words are untrue, but by virtue of their written existence and endless recital, they are true to me. I believe we must never stop striving to keep them true.

These last two words closed the deal for me, “for all”. While those of us who are in the minority have certainly felt the pain of discrimination, it is paramount that we work to never become that which we battle against. The battle must be for all.

Liberty and justice must always be blind.

For me, it is my faith that will drive me to keep these words true. It is my hard work that I have applied that will keep these words strong. It is for family and loved ones that will keep me in the struggle to make the spirit of these soar.

I was inspired to write this because of an article written by Dr. Mick Founts about the pledge and his journey with it. It is my hope that this article inspires, as his article inspired me. Thank you, Dr. Founts.

Recuerdo claramente la primera vez que escuché estas palabras, “Prometo lealtad a la bandera de los Estados Unidos de América…” Fue en kindergarten, 1965, Primaria Henderson Village. Esas palabras me parecían raras puesto que a pesar de ser tan pequeño, sabía que yo era diferente. O eras el hijo del ranchero o del campesino. Era mexicano, por lo tanto considerado de una clase más baja, irrelevante de nuestra condición económica o educacional. Aquí no había aguas medias.

Imagino que fue en ese entonces que comencé mi lucha por probar que yo valía, que era capaz, y suficientemente fuerte como para romper esas barreras y alcanzar la igualdad.

Jurar lealtad a cualquier cosa que no fuese mi familia me parecía algo fuera de lugar; aun así, las palabras salieron sin esfuerzo.

Mirándolo ahora, imagino que siendo apenas un niño esas palabras “…y por la república que representa…” me hubiesen provocado mil preguntas. Me acuerdo que me preguntaba “¿Qué significa esto?” Estaba en la secundaria antes que esas palabras significaran siquiera algo para mí. Fue tal vez una clase de Historia o de Gobierno, los debates y temática sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el Conflicto de Corea, o las todavía humeantes brasas de la Guerra del Vietnam. Sea cual fuere, comencé

E D I TO R I A LES a creer que esta gran nación nuestra, con un gobierno del pueblo, por el pueblo y para el pueblo, era nuestro, de todos.

Estas palabras cobraron aún más sentido cuando dejé de ser niño en los 1970s “…una sola nación, subordinada a Dios, indivisible…” Con tantos veteranos o activos en las fuerzas armadas en mi familia, eventualmente la expresión “una sola nación” significaría algo para mí.

Misa Dominical, Catecismo, estatuas de la Virgen de Guadalupe, Últimas Cenas en porcelana, Cristos y cruces estaban por todas partes en mi casa. Era una interminable fe que parecía protegernos de las vilezas del odio y la discriminación. “Dios, indivisible” estaba más claro que el agua.

Me inscribí para el reclutamiento con un sentido de responsabilidad. La Guerra y el servicio obligatorio ya habían acabado; sin embargo, era gratificante dar ese paso y ser parte. Estoy seguro de haberme inscrito para votar a los 18 años. El patriotismo lo heredé de mi padre quien, a pesar de los problemas, discriminación y obstáculos que le plagaban a él y a nosotros, mantenía un hondo patriotismo y responsabilidad para con este gran país nuestro. No lo entendía muy bien, pero lo seguí.

Luego estuve en mis 20s y estas palabras me dieron orgullo y esperanza “con libertad y justicia…” La historia ha comprobado demasiadas veces que estas palabras no son verdaderas pero, por el hecho de su existencia escrita y el recitarlo tantas veces, ya son verdad para mí. Creo que nunca debemos dejar de luchar para que sean ciertas.

Para mí, estas dos palabras fueron cerrar el círculo, “para todos”. Aunque nosotros como minoría ciertamente hemos sufrido la discriminación, es crucial que tratemos de nunca llegar a practicar lo que tanto luchamos por derrotar. La batalla debe ser por todos. La libertad y la justicia deben ser siempre ciegas. Para mí, es la fe la que me ayuda a creer en estas palabras.

Es el trabajo de todos mis años lo que las hace fuertes. Y son familia y seres queridos los que me mantiene en la lucha para que estos sentimientos sigan vigentes.
