E

n su magistral discurso pronunciado en Valley Forge, Pensilvania, el 5 de enero, el presidente Biden declaró que en las elecciones de 2024 de Estados Unidos, su democracia está en juego —pero Estados Unidos no es el único. 2024 ha sido llamado el mayor año electoral de la historia, porque habrá elecciones en 64 países, donde participará el 49 por ciento de la población mundial. Más importante aún, 2024 tiene el potencial de revertir una tendencia de casi dos décadas —durante la cual el número de países en los que la calidad de la democracia ha ido disminuyendo ha superado al número de países en los que está mejorando.

Según la ONG Freedom House, en la tendencia declinante que comenzó en 2006, hasta 73 países experimentaron caídas en comparación con 28 que mejoraron en 2020 (disminución neta de 45 países). Por supuesto, las elecciones por sí solas no determinan la calidad de la democracia pero, como ya hemos visto en los primeros días de este año, las elecciones son fundamentales.

resident Biden declared that democracy is at stake in the United States in the 2024 elections in his masterful speech from Valley Forge, PA, on January 5, but the U.S. is not alone. 2024 has been called the biggest election year in history because there will be elections in which 49 percent of the world’s population will participate in 64 countries. More importantly, 2024 has the potential of reversing a nearly two decade trend during which the number of countries in which the quality of democracy is declining may be exceeded by the number in which it is improving.

In a downward trend that started in 2006, as many as 73 countries experienced declines compared to 28 which improved in 2020 (net decline of 45 countries), according to Freedom House. Of course, elections alone do not determine the quality of democracy, but as we have already

seen in the first few days of this year, elections are fundamental.

The first election of the year which took place in Bangladesh on January 7 got the year off to a potentially troublesome start for democracy, as the U.S. Department of State declared that the voting was not free and fair.

The ruling Awami League again swept to an overwhelming victory with three quarters of the seats, enabling Prime Minister Kanishka Singh to remain as Prime Minister for a fourth straight term. However, the next election in Taiwan was a model of free and fair elections. Thus despite the threatening stance of the Government of China toward candidate William Lai Chingte and his Democratic Progressive Party because of his insistence on independence and democratic values, Lai was able to win a clear plurality of 40 percent in the three way race.

Perhaps more significantly, the will to fight for democracy was also demonstrated in the first country to actually experience a change of leadership this year as President Bernardo Arévalo supported by his reformist Semilla Party was inaugurated in Guatemala on January 14. In elections held last August, the 65 year old Arévalo, a professor and former diplomat, won election by a stunning margin in elections that international observers declared free and fair in one of the most notoriously corrupt countries in the Americas. The son of Guatemala’s legendary progressive center leftist President who pioneered democracy and social service reforms in the 1940s, Arévalo’s campaign was driven by a cadre of youthful supporters committed to fight corruption and restore continued on next page opportunity to all february-march 2024 Joaquín 3

the country’s people. The incumbent government immediately raised concerns about the elections and a flurry of allegations of fraud were raised as it ordered the Attorney General to seize ballots and undertake a series of investigations.

Repulsed by the history of the so called Pact of the Corrupt (a cabal of politicians, drug traffickers, ex-military and unethical businesspeople) which had controlled the country for over a decade, the United States, the European Union and the Organization of American States, this coalition led by the U.S. reacted enthusiastically in favor of the actual outcome of the vote. When Guatemalan authorities persisted in questioning the election outcome in a Trump-style election denial campaign, the Department of State cancelled the visa and invoked Magnitsky Sanctions against one of outgoing President Giammetti’s closest collaborators. Then as Guatemala’s Congress openly considered how to interfere with the scheduled inauguration, the U.S. cancelled the visas of two thirds of its members. Although a nine-hour delay took place in the actual event, Arévalo insistently assumed office as King Felipe IV of Spain, the Gene Bigler, PhD presidents of Colombia Writer & consultant and Chile, a U.S. delegaon global affairs, tion led by USAID Diformer professor, rector Samantha Powers, retired diplomat and many other foreign leaders looked on approvingly. After having witnessed the how corruption and the increasing autocracy of the country drove over two million citizens to emigrate in recent years, the global community now looks on the potential for Guatemala to return to its tradition of leading the Central American struggle for the liberty and well-being of its people.

From Latin America, attention turns next back to Asia where elections will take place in Pakistan and Indonesia in February amid abundant concerns about democracy, but less than for the two scheduled elections in Eastern Europe in March. The prospects for Russia where any hint of opposition or criticism leads to incarceration or worse are especially bleak.

Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to win kudos for the openness of its society and struggle against corruption, but the outlook for the scheduled election are uncertain given the war with Russia and continuing martial law.

2. President Lopez Obrador’s Morena Party is expected to dominate the outcome and elect his confederate, Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, as his successor, despite his government’s dismal economic record.

Given his at times virulently nationalistic stance toward the United States, hands off treatment of criminal networks (called “Hugs Rather Than Bullets”) and repeated snubs of President Biden, the outlook for the U.S. had been of increasing concern until the coalescence of opposition support for the presidential campaign of Xóchitl Gálvez emerged during the last few months. Her insistence on restoring the collaboration with the U.S. in economic, law enforcement and migration arenas has been encouraging. June will also entertain elections for members of the twenty-seven member countries of the European Parliament.

The recent trend in support of rightwing and Euro-skeptic politics, including antiIslamic, anti-immigrant, and fatigue over support for Ukraine, seem to have improved the prospects for previously disparaged leaders, such as Geert Wilders in the Netherlands and Gigorgia Meloni in Italy as well as factions in Portugal, France and Germany. ólo unos pocos de nosotros, los Chicanos, hemos leído u oído hablar de Vicente Guerrero, el segundo presidente de México. Los escolares de nuestro país vecino lo recuerdan mejor por sus palabras durante esos tiempos revolucionarios: “Mi patria es primero”.

Desde la elección de Barack Obama como presidente de Estados Unidos hace varios años y su eventual reelección, Guerrero ganó reconocimiento adicional tanto en México como en Estados Unidos —por dos motivos.

Primero, él, y no Obama, es el primer hombre de descendencia africana en ser elegido presidente de un país norteamericano. Los historiadores escriben que el abuelo paterno de Guerrero era esclavo o descendía de esclavos africanos. En segundo lugar, Guerrero abolió la esclavitud en México en 1829, un tercio de siglo antes de que Estados Unidos librara su sangrienta Guerra Civil y el Congreso de Estados Unidos aprobara la 13ª Enmienda a nuestra Constitución.

Guerrero, hijo del afromexicano Pedro Guerrero, fue asesinado dos años después de asumir el cargo. Su madre, Guadalupe, nació de padres indígenas mexicanos. Herman Bennett comparte su historia en su libro “Africanos en el México colonial”. Los primeros esclavos africanos fueron llevados al Nuevo Mundo antes de que apareciera el Mayflower en 1620. A principios del siglo XVII, el número de africanos que llegaban a los puertos mexicanos “rivalizaba colectivamente, si no superaba en número, a los españoles en toda Nueva España”, escribe Bennett. “En Veracruz, las personas de ascendencia africana constituían el 63 por ciento de la población no-indígena”.

nly a few of us Chicanos have read or heard of Vicente Guerrero, Mexico’s second president. He’s best remembered by our neighboring country’s school children for his words during those revolutionary times, “Mi patria es primero (My motherland comes first.)”

Since the election of Barack Obama as U.S. President a few years ago and his re-election afterwards, Guerrero gained extra recognition in Mexico and the United States as well, on two counts.

First, he, not Obama, is the first man of African ancestry to be elected president of a North American country. Historians write that Guerrero’s paternal grandfather was either a slave himself or descended from African slaves. Second, Guerrero abolished slavery in Mexico in 1829, a third of a century before the United States fought its bloody Civil War and the U.S. Congress passed the 13th Amendment to our Constitution.

Guerrero, the son of African-Mexican Pedro Guerrero, was assassinated two years after taking office. His mother Guadalupe was born to indigenous Mexican parents. Herman Bennett shares their story in his book “Africans in Colonial Mexico”. The first African slaves were brought to the New World before the Mayflower showed up in 1620.

By the early 1600s the number of Africans dropped off at Mexican ports “collectively rivaled, if not outnumbered, Spaniards throughout New Spain,” writes Bennett. “At Veracruz, persons of African descent constituted 63 percent of the non-indigenous population.”

As African Americans pay tribute to their forebears this month, we should examine our southern neighbor for the prominent role Africans played there. Their contributions have been flimsily acknowledged and grossly under-appreciated in Mexico, say their historians.

Andy Porras Indoctrinated through a Eurocentric system of education much like Sacramento, CA our own, most Mexicans know little or nothing about “the third root” that blended with their Spanish and indigenous heritages. The closer you look at this historical image, the easier it becomes to realize how African influences significantly enriched it through art, music, language, cuisine and dance.

As Mexico’s second president following the toppling of Spanish rule, Guerrero, a gallant Mexican Independency War general, was sometimes mocked as “el Negro Guerrero.” But today the state he served carries his name. His family settled in Tixtla, a town 100 kilometers inland from Acapulco, a key port of entry for slave ships which consequently has a large African population.

During Mexico’s War of Independence, Guerrero’s father Pedro, a supporter of the Spanish rulers, asked his son for his sword to present to the viceroy of New Spain as a sign of good will and surrender. Vicente refused, proclaiming, “The will of my father is for me sacred, but my Motherland is first.” His quote became the motto of its southern Mexican state of later named Guerrero in his honor. february-march 2024 Joaquín 5

Guerra de Independencia de México, el padre de Guerrero, Pedro —quien era partidario del dominio español, le pidió a su hijo su espada para presentársela al virrey de Nueva España como señal de buena voluntad y rendición.

Vicente se negó y proclamó: “La voluntad de mi padre es para mí sagrada, pero mi Patria está primero”. Su cita se convirtió en el lema del estado del sur de México, más tarde llamado ‘Guerrero’ en su honor.

Los cinco lenguajes del amor.

El resultado promete ser milagroso, como bailarle a alguna Virgen piadosa.

Por solo bailar, creo haber alcanzado la salvación: bailo salsa todos los días.

Según los puntos de la pruebita, el sujeto pertenece a una de cinco categorías, como animales amaestrados.

El propósito de saber la categoría de cada quien es para que la mujer dicte la sentencia: Esto es lo que necesito, de hoy en adelante acatas porque acatas.

Es lo que te he venido diciendo toda la vida pero tú no escuchas ni entiendes ni te interesa.

De sea manera, el hombre queda curado del “es que no sé lo que quieres.”

Mi categoría es clara y contundente: lo único que necesito es abrazos y apapachos.

Con este encierro, he quedado a la deriva, como huerfanito.

The purpose of knowing the category of each one Is for the woman to dictate the sentence: This is what I need, from now on either you do it or else.

That is what I have been telling you all this time, but you don’t listen, don’t understand, and don’t care.

That way, the man is healed from “I don’t know what you want.”

My category is clear and convincing: All I need is hugs and kisses.

With this confinement, I have remained adrift, like an orphan.

I abhor the day I took that test.

1619 Project: a Different View

I

n the previous issue of Joaquin Gene Bigler gave a very laudatory review of much of The 1619 Project created

by Nikole Hannah-Jones and company for The New York Times Magazine (The Path for America’s Democratic Renewal, Joaquin #127, January 2024, pp. 3-4; 24-27.) In his view the book did an admirable job presenting a lot of the history which is generally omitted from the telling of American history; that is, the contributions of blacks to the history of the United States staring with the landing of the first slaves in 1619 in Virginia. Gene is correct in pointing this out and in presenting some of that information in his article. However, the book is also flawed and it is important to have this discussed as well.

In a sense this article is a complement to Gene’s review. The format of the book itself belies its subtitle as “a new origin story” because this is a compilation of articles on 18 topics with a significant preface and with explanatory introductions, poetry —and other preface material before each chapter. The topics include democracy, race, sugar, music, justice, politics, dispossession, inheritance, and others. This is not designed to present a complete origin story but to highlight topics in our history and present the contributions of Blacks to each. It is an incomplete mosaic at best.

An unfortunate consequence of this concept is that it becomes a document in identity politics. The book presents aspects of Black contributions without placing them in a fuller context so that one can properly understand history. For example, John Quincy Adams was a tireless supporter of abolition. He presented so many petitions regarding slavery that the House of Representatives stopped accepting them. The only mention of him in the book is

n el número anterior de Joaquín, Gene Bigler hizo una reseña muy elogiosa de gran parte del ‘Proyecto 1619’ creado por Nikole Hannah-Jones y Compañía para The New York Times Magazine.

Gene tiene razón al señalar esto y al presentar parte de esa información en su artículo. Sin embargo, el libro también tiene fallas y es importante notar eso también.

En cierto sentido, este artículo es un complemento a la reseña de Gene. example given in the book involves a Portuguese shipment in which the sailors may actually have done the capturing, much as was presented in the book and television series Roots. But that was rare. Almost all slaves were purchased from African kingdoms.

These kingdoms had been in the trade for centuries with Arabs and even Europe. The Americas were simply a new and larger market with which the European colonial powers began trading.

The discussion of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is restricted to presenting how in the South it was used to call out militias to put down slave rebellions and insurrections. It certainly was so used. But militias were also called out to suppress the Whiskey Rebellion in western Pennsylvania 1791-1794. The Whiskey Rebellion was much more serious than any slave rebellion, involving hundreds of rebels over a few years. The Second Amendment also has an aspect where the right is private, preserving the right to personal selfdefense. This view of the Amendment was upheld in this century (2008) in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller. James Baldwin gets little mention. Zora Neale Hurston is mentioned only in relation to her folklore work and not for her novels. An interesting creative choice was to have a chapter on sugar. While cotton became the crop that really saved slavery in the U.S. after Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793 and led to the unique form of slavery in the American South. Sugar is less well-known, but sugar did come first and anchor the American economy in the Atlantic world from the 16th century forward. Louisiana was producing about a quarter of the world’s sugar until the Civil War. Much of the sugar became molasses and rum, and linked much of the North to the global slave trade.

This might be the best chapter in the book.

In sum, though flawed this is an important work. Beyond presenting much little known information, it certainly brought issues forward and enhanced the public debate which is commendable.

I don’t think that reparations is a helpful answer, but it does help keep raising the question. One of the things that I love about Blight’s biography of Frederick Douglass that I just read is how he kept struggling to get beyond identity politics even as circumstances kept forcing them on him.

It wasn’t about being color blind, it was about not allowing race to interfere with treating another person with basic human dignity.

This is one of the things that bugs me about prominent 1619 project contributors Ibrahim Kendi and Nicole Hannah-Jones to a somewhat lesser degree. I think that their subservience to identity politics keeps them from recognizing allies to what Douglass would have called the struggle for common humanity, such as John Quincy Adams, not to mention Abraham Lincoln or even LBJ after 1963, and the roles these white folks also played in the struggle for justice.

I agree with nearly all of David’s critique of my earlier impressions about The 1619 Project. In fact, I would have welcomed him to have expounded even further on some of the ideas expressed in our verbal exchange about this provocative book. Public Accountability Rindiendo Cuentas a Dashboard Libro Abierto

t Stockton Unified School District’s State of the District, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rodriguez promised there would be accountability. The first SUSD’s Public Accountability Dashboard has been released.

It reflects 44 priority recommendations from 21 Public Input Sessions. The community gave their recommendations and, accordingly, SUSD established goals and implementation to provide the education SUSD students deserve. Superintendent Rodriguez says she plans to reach the goals by June.

“The Public Accountability Dashboard serves as a comprehensive reflection of the critical progress we are making in collaboration with our dedicated staff and community. I urge each one of you to take a moment to review the Dashboard, as it underscores the decisive and lasting positive impacts, we are driving in the lives of our Stockton educational community,” said SUSD Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rodriguez.

SUSD is excited to share some important updates regarding progress towards the 44 Priority Recommendations outlined in the October 2023 State of the District. As promised, the SUSD’s new Public Accountability Dashboard is already online.

a ruina de algunas de las instituciones clave de Estados Unidos —obra del expresidente Donald Trump— ha estado bien documentada durante años. Ha transformado el Partido Republicano en un culto autoritario a la personalidad; socavó la autoridad regulatoria de la EPA y las protecciones ambientales; subvirtió la salud pública y saboteó la ciencia y la verdad; desvirtuó al Departamento de Justicia, al FBI y a las autoridades federales —excepto a ICE— como enemigos del pueblo; transformó el proceso de nombramiento judicial en un concurso de belleza para multimillonarios y fanáticos religiosos, y corroyó el uso de los poderes presidenciales hasta convertirlo en instrumentos de capricho autocrático. Glory: American Evangelicalism in an Age of Extremism (Harper, 2023), ha proporcionado el impulso y gran parte de los fundamentos de este ensayo. He has transformed the Republican Party into an authoritarian cult of personality; undermined the regulatory authority of the EPA and environmental protections; subverted public health and sabotaged science and truth; painted the Department of Justice, FBI and federal law enforcement except ICE as an enemy of the people; twisted the judicial appointment process into a beauty pageant for billionaires and religious fanatics, and corroded the use of presidential powers into instruments of autocratic whim. Yet the recognition of the extent to which he has corrupted

The way the political impact on evangelical religion has evolved is the main subject of Part 1 of this inquiry. Part 2 will examine the nature of the corruption more fully, especially the more corrosive impact on evangelicalism, as well as the broader political context of evangelical support for Trump’s 2024 bid for re-election.

During the last few months as the Republican presidential primary in Iowa began to gather more attention, polls repeatedly showed that slightly over half of Trump’s support was coming from evangelical voters. This reminded election watchers of their tremendous impact in his previous elections and the Republican Party. At the same time, Trump obviously increased his attention to evangelicals and his effort to appeal to them by such bizarre actions as replaying a video in his own ads that declares ‘God made Trump’ and implying it is to carry out a special mission for America.

While the influence of evangelicals and their electoral importance to Trump has been high for some time, New York Times correspondent Tim Alberta has been at the forefront of a few observers who have also noted some disturbing changes in the evangelical community. His new book, The Kingdom, The Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicalism in an Age of Extremism (Harper, 2023), has provided the impetus and much of the evidentiary basis of this essay. Alberta and his colleagues have noticed that despite the blossoming of evangelical churches from 2012 to the end of the Trump presidency, attendance has in the

last few years suddenly declined and many churches are without pastors, e. g., a third of congregations just in Mississippi. Disturbing divisions have arisen in a number of Evangelical congregations. Scandals and “prosperity gospel” promotions are commonplace and conspicuous.

Sermons, prayers and messages are more often explicitly political and much less centered on Christ and the Bible. And small groups of ideological blowhards have increasingly led whole congregations into increasingly political, secular and commercial interests. Ironically, just as the evangelicals seemed to be recovering their decisive role in national politics because of their unwavering support for Trump, the evangelical movement itself seems to be moving away from its traditional conservative role (greater religiosity) in American life.

The relative speed of the change both up and down in evangelicalism since 2012 is itself a surprising development given the previous nearly half century of steadily declining religiosity (belonging, behaving and believing) in most U.S. faiths. The masterful study of contemporary religion in American political life

by Robert D. Putnam and David E. Campbell provides a framework to examine the religious context and put these trends and other relevant characteristics in context.

Yet despite the overall decline from the 1970s to the 2000s, they found that the U.S. still ranks fairly high in religious activity and belief in comparison to other countries, and that Americans are “a highly religious people.” They also report that unlike the steady decline in most identities, Evangelical Protestants actually boomed for a period from the late 1970s through the early 1990s.

in Phoenix, Arizona, and the appearance of new congregations and a bit more surprisingly with many strong connections to rightwing political movements, especially the Moral Majority.

While Americans remain a comparatively religious people as Putnam and Campbell report, they finished even the 2012 update of some of their work too early to appreciate fully the more recent tendencies. For instance, the number expressing no religious identity held steady at less than seven percent from the 1960s to 1993, climbed to 16 percent in 2006, increased a few points by 2016, then jumped to 29 percent in 2023. 2019 was the first year that fewer than half the American public said that religion was very important in their lives, and confidence in churches and organized religion which had averaged 54 to 61 percent since the early 1990s dropped under fifty percent for the first time in 2007, fell steadily to 41 percent in 2016, and was just 32 percent in 2023.

Right from chapter One, Tim Alberta helps the reader understand the sense of urgency that prompted many evangelicals who recognized negative trends in America turn to Trump in describing the people in what was once his father’s Cornerstone Church congregation in Brighton, Michigan. He explains that they recognized Trump as an imperfect instrument in God’s hand, like King Cyrus and Solomon in the Old Testament, who could rescue America from its abyss. Their intense love of country and sense that Christianity was at a crossroads fostered them to commit themselves to Christian nationalism. That chapter describes the first stop at more than a score of others as the patient, respectful reporter that grew up in evangelicalism gradually unfolds the story of declining religiosity in the evangelical world of worship, education, publishing, and even entertainment and political campaigns.

In chapter three Alberta journeys to Lynchburg, Virginia, to describe how Jerry Falwell transformed an early 1950s Old Time Radio Gospel Hour and the struggling Lynchburg Baptist College into the Liberty University dynamo of evangelical higher education in America. He outlines the connection to politics that started with rabid opposition to school integration, enlisted the financial support of Heritage Foundation founder Paul Weyrich, and then extended their partnership to the development of the Moral Majority and building of national opposition to President Jimmy Carter. As his Liberty University fame grew, Falwell was able to become the lynchpin continued on page 25 of Reagan’s Southern

Mi muñeca derecha apenas puede balancear la carga, pero una vez que la bolsa está en el aire, la acuno como a un bebé contra mi pecho, temerosa de que se deshaga y el tenedor de carne se me entierre en las espinillas. Pasa una polilla blanca y vuela sobre manojos de hinojo silvestre que han crecido en un estrecho espacio entre la acera y la pared de la bodega.

Las larguiruchas malezas desprenden un aroma dulce parecido al anís —y que me recuerda la salchicha que solíamos hacer en mi último restaurante. En San Francisco, el sol de septiembre se vuelve más cálido y más intenso que la luz del verano; la niebla se disipa, las noches frescas sólo hacen que la claridad del día penetre con mayor precisión.

September, 2008 When I grab my knife bag from the passenger’s seat, it’s heavy, awkward, and almost bursts open. My right wrist can barely swing the load, yet once the bag is lifted, I cradle it like a baby against my chest, afraid it might unravel, my meat fork fall into my shins. A stray white moth hovers over patches of wild fennel that have seeded in a narrow space between the warehouse and sidewalk. The lanky weeds cast a sweet anise-like aroma that reminds me of the sausage we use to make at my last restaurant. In San Francisco, September sun becomes hotter and sharper than summer’s light; fog dissipates, cool nights only make day’s brightness penetrate more exactly.

The catering kitchen has a huge garage door that rises for loading and unloading van after van. In fall, the breeze and ventilation help me remain sane. In winter, the cool air reminds me of the world outside as I bend over my cutting board or grill kabobs. Today large vases of lilies, baby’s breath, and delphinium crowd the loading bay; broad petals knot in pins of blue and white. The lily fragrance becomes fecund paired with a corn syrup reduction in the recycling bin.

The kitchen, packed with people working in a frenzy, tells me something’s different today. At this point in the pack out, the kitchen is usually calm, with Carlos going over final details to make sure the event’s kitchen manager has parsley and chives for an hors d’oeuvre garnish. The ovens should be off, the stoves clean, and everything we need to cater neatly packed into large plastic containers.

Carlos is not here.

Kenny, the sous chef, looks harried as he scrutinizes the julienned peppers next to Adel’s cutting board. Phil and Cindy, the owners of Curved Plate Catering, huddle around a bus tub of crab base, roll crab cakes over their calloused hands. Grilled steak and caramelized onion aromas mingle with the crab base’s mayo and mustard. Knives hum, pans clang, and a huge Hobart rattles toward a symphonic pitch I shout over.

A new kid I’ve only worked with once helps Phil and Cindy roll crab cakes: his hands thick with egg, flour, and breadcrumb mixtures; his chef coat streaked with yolk gunk. He stares at each cake as he slowly places them one at a time in egg wash, in flour, back into egg wash, and into herbed breadcrumbs close to Phil’s belly.

I can see the look in Phil’s eyes, and the subsequent verbal beat down: “One hand should always be free and clean. Work in batches of ten. Cleanup your station. What is this? Eh, what the fuck is this? You are a mess. Cleanup.”

I decide to follow Andrew into the quiet walk-in refrigerator.

Among sheet trays of skewered shrimp and beef, he shows me the list of what we still need to pack out: mint, parsley, lemons, three large mixing bowls, gloves, a whisk, a pair of tongs, and some towels. Andrew looks tired, and his baseball cap sits about as close to his eyes as it can without blocking his view. I’m about to ask him where Carlos is, when Phil enters the walk-in with the bowl of egg wash resting against his pudgy belly.

I’ve learned to detach myself from the potential drama of the head chef or my coworkers. If I invest too much emotion in my task, or in the situation at hand, I will go home every continued on next page night pissed-off and turn on my february-march 2024 Joaquín 19

bed with anxiety’s motion. Chefs can be jerks, coworkers stupid; I will be both in the course of a day. Focus on my job of crisping a trout’s once-squamous skin or folding tortellini with a proper seal —don’t comment when someone gets angry or agitated.

Once I worked with a fiery British chef at a small French-Asian fusion restaurant in Virginia. My first Saturday afternoon we were prepping for service, and Chef John nicked himself with a boning knife as he trimmed beef fillets. Suddenly John was lifting and kicking steel prep tables, hopping across the small kitchen, and screaming: “Goddamn!

Goddamn!”

His face tensed and grimaced as if he was a little boy who’d fallen off his new skateboard. Aaron, Paul, and I didn’t—or at least thought we couldn’t—say anything.

We exchanged brief looks with each other but didn’t make prolonged eye contact or talk for a few minutes. After John calmed down, we continued to quarter and dice, sweat our vegetables, and trim our fillets. I was making fresh corn custards for dinner, and my hand shook as I poured the mixture into tiny aluminum cups. For three months I worked with John one foot away, and I turned out veggie sides for his entrees, pressed against him and the wall of the small kitchen. I quit after three months at OXO. Why spend numerous hours a day attempting to detach from your surroundings? Though she was writing about her potential habitation on the Canary Islands, MFK Fisher wrote how I felt the last two years I cooked seriously: “It takes detachment to live in a place where the physical boundaries are visible in every direction. And for me there is too little of life to spend most of it forcing myself into detachment from it.”

Andrew, James, and I finish loading the van with sodas and waters for staff. We push the last lexan back against the rolling rack sealed in plastic wrap. This woman I’ve worked with maybe once or twice needs a ride; we walk to my car while Andrew and James jump in the van. She walks delicately, as if the pavement might throw up a small rock to make her trip.

She has directions to the party and tells me where we are headed: a small residence overlooking the ocean in Pacifica. I turn onto Mariposa, past the cement plant and “The Hide Away” bar we all hit after last week’s party.

The sun seems to climb west, but the light feels hollow in my car.

Sometimes Curved Plate will have two or three parties a night, so while I’ve seen this woman before, I’m not sure how long she’s been with the company.

“Hi, I’m Melissa. I know you’re Gabi because Adrian called me and told me I’d be riding with you.” She fiddles with the strap on her sporty purse and opens the window: “I’ve been here about half a year. And you?”

Una vez, en un pequeño restaurante de fusión franco-asiático en Virginia, trabajé con un irascible chef británico. They were paid well, but they sometimes felt like beasts of burden, especially when they had to work long hours, complete a contract and move to the next farm. None of the workers was allowed to get close to anyone in the farmers’ families. They worked and parted before any relationship or friendship could take root. The migrant families moved into a community, stayed in the marginal labor camps and left after the harvest.

Don Robo didn’t like being questioned by his workers; he found the work and the workers worked. It was that simple. He did not have to argue or fight with his workers because if they did not like his orders, they were replaced with another family. On one occasion, Don Robo continued on next page did fight his cousin,

Pepe. He managed to hurt Don Robo right away with unblocked right crosses. As drunk as Don Robo was, he just kept coming, punch after punch. He just kept coming. That’s one thing about fighting Don Robo; it was going to be a long fight, no matter what happened, somebody was going to get badly hurt. Even those trying to stop the fight could be hurt.

As time passed, Don Robo became meaner and meaner to his workers and even more distant with his family. He enjoyed the Friday and Saturday evenings in the local cantinas.

The cantina was his castle, the place where he felt like a king and where he was treated with respect. After the sixth bottle of beer, Don Robo started buying rounds; before long, a fight would break out just because he needed to get rid of the anger that was eating away at him. All that was needed to find a fight is to call out to someone in the bar, “You Son of a Bitch! ¡Chinga tu madre, Hijo de la Chingada!” Chairs levitated, beer bottles took flight, and boot heels ended up high in the air.

Sometimes, a fight between two turned into a larger bar brawl. And it rarely stopped there.

Those that didn’t want to get knifed later avoided the alleys, instead selected to stay in the bar to get beat up in public.

During the week, Don Robo supervised work groups in three different farms, not affording him the time to pick fruit along with his workers. Although he was knowledgeable of farming and gardening, rarely would he have to demonstrate to workers how fast he wanted them to work and how to work together. His major goal was to manage the workers and to have the harvest hauled to the canneries. At one of the farms under his contract, his crew was completing the seasonal work when he learned that Mr. Michael Johnson, a farmer under contract, had passed and his widow, Mrs. Rebecca Johnson, was living there alone. Mr. Romano, the custodian of the family secrets, directed Don Robo to care for Mrs. Johnson’s garden. Don Robo stopped by on several occasions to maintain the garden.

One day, Mrs. Johnson came out to listen to the birds singing by her window. Don Robo was kneeling by a plant that he was replacing with a rose bush. “Where are the birds? I hear birds singing!” she said aloud, not noticing Don Robo. “The birds you heard, well, that was I, whistling! Oh, Mrs. Johnson! I’m sorry I did not ask your permission to weed and care for your garden,” Don Robo apologized without an accent.

“Who are you?” asked Mrs. Johnson sternly.

himself but used his first name with her, “I am Roberto, your late husband’s labor contractor.” he answered as he turned to face her.

“Oh! Thank you for helping me out with the garden, I wouldn’t know what to do,” she added timidly.

Under the gloomy face was a pretty one and Don Robo was struck right away. “Please wait,” he requested. He quickly went in the shed and came out with a pair of rubber garden gloves, hand rake, and short hoe. “Slowly rake the sprouting weeds around the plants,” he said with a smile.

“The whistling was nice!” whispered Mrs. Johnson; “people call me Becky!” lowered her head and feeling rather embarrassed to also use her first name.

Canaries, parrots, finches, and nightingales blessed the garden with their melodious songs. When Don Robo introduced each bird song, the volume was barely audible, but progressively the song grew louder until the type of bird was clearly evident: parrots, nightingale, finches, and pigeons took turns singing. He also loved to whistle some of his favorite Ranchera songs: “Ay yay, yayyy, canta y no llores!”

Don Robo pasó por ahí en varias ocasiones para dar mantención al jardín.

Un día, la señora Johnson salió a escuchar el canto de los pájaros junto a su ventana. Don Robo estaba arrodillado junto a una planta que estaba reemplazando por un rosal. “¿Dónde están los pájaros? ¡Escucho el canto de los pájaros! dijo en voz alta, sin notar a Don Robo.

“Los pájaros que escuchó, bueno, ¡ése era yo, silbando! ¡Oh, señora Johnson! Lamento no haberle pedido permiso para desmalezar y cuidar su jardín”, se disculpó Don Robo sin acento. “¿Quién es usted?” preguntó la señora Johnson muy seria.

“Soy Don…”, comenzó a presentarse pero usó su nombre con ella, “Soy Roberto, el contratista de mano de obra de su difunto esposo” respondió mientras giraba para mirarla de frente. “¡Oh! Gracias por ayudarme con el jardín, no sabría qué hacer”, añadió tímidamente.

Debajo del rostro sombrío había uno hermoso y Don Robo quedó impactado de inmediato. “Por favor, espere”, le pidió. Rápidamente entró en el cobertizo y salió con un par de guantes de goma, un rastrillo de mano y una azada corta. “Rastrille lentamente las malas hierbas que brotan alrededor de las plantas”, dijo con una sonrisa. “¡Ese silbido fue agradable!” susurró la señora Johnson; “¡Quienes me conocen me llama Becky!” Bajó la cabeza instintivamente cuando se dio cuenta que, también, estaba divulgando su nombre de pila.

Canarios, loros, pinzones y ruiseñores llenaban el jardín con sus melodiosos trinos.

Cuando Don Robo presentaba el trinar de cada ave, el volumen era apenas audible, pero progresivamente se hacía más fuerte hasta que el tipo de pájaro era claramente evidente: loros, ruiseñores, pinzones y palomas se turnaban para cantar. También le encantaba silbar algunas de sus rancheras favoritas: “¡Ay yay, yayyy, canta y no llores!”

CHO: De picar, pican… pero los méndigos se pelan con mi cebo.

LO: (Devolviendo el cangrejo al cubo) Esto me recuerda un chiste, carnal.

CHO: (Sonriendo despectivo) ¡Oh no! ¿No será otro de tus chistes que nadie entiende?

LO: No Vato, pero escúchalo, éste sí te va a causar gracia.

CHO: (Dándose por vencido) Vale. Échalo afuera.

LO: Resulta que estaban estos dos Vatos, Chuy y Joker, pescando cangrejos en este Canal.

CHO: ¿¡Pescando cangrejos!? Eso sí estuvo chistoso.

LO: No Vato… espera, hay más. Ahora… cada vez que uno de ellos atrapaba un cangrejo, lo ponía en una cubeta —y

LO: Hey Vato I been looking for you! Stopped by your chante and your tío said you went fishing. Caught anything?

CHO: Nada. Been here since 8 this morning and all I caught is this skinny ol’ crab!

LO: (Pulls out the crab and dangles it in the air) Damn - that’s one skinny crab alright.

Stockton, CA LO: (Tossing the crab back in the bucket) This reminds me of a joke, homes.

CHO: (Scoffs) Oh no, not another one of your corny jokes?

LO: No Vato but check it out this one will really crack you up.

CHO: (Defeated) Ok, get it over with.

LO: It turns out there were these two Vatos, Chuy and Joker, fishing for crabs in the channel.

CHO: Fishing for crabs!? Now that’s funny.

LO: No Vato… wait there’s more. Now every time one of them caught a crab they would put it into a bucket and Joker noticed that none of the other guy’s crabs would crawl out of his bucket so he said to Chuy “Hey Vato how come my crabs keep crawling out of my bucket and none of the crabs in your bucket do? They just stay inside?

CHO: (Laughs outloud) Now that’s funny! His crabs stayed inside!

LO: No, Wait. Let me finish. There’s more. (He continues) So Chuy answers “The reason my crabs never get outta’ my bucket is that I have “Mexican crabs” in mine and you don’t.”

CHO: (Cracking up.) Mexican crabs!?? I never heard of Mexican crabs. That’s really funny!!

LO: No wait, that’s not the punch line! (He continues) So Chuy says “Yeah Mexican crabs.

Every time one gets to the top, the other ones pull him down!” Get it? (Lo rolls over laughing at this own joke suddenly stops and notices Cho is not laughing) Homes, that was the punch line? Don’t you get it? You’re not laughing??

CHO: That’s not funny, homes.

CHO: (Riéndose a carcajadas.) ¿¡Cangrejos mexicanos!?? Nunca oí hablar de cangrejos mexicanos. ¡¡Eso sí tiene gracia!!

LO: ¡No, espera, ese no es el chiste! (Continúa) Entonces Chuy dice “Sí, cangrejos mexicanos ¡Cada vez que uno sube hasta a la orilla de la cubeta, los otros lo tiran pa’abajo! ¿No entiendes? (Lo se revuelca de la risa con su propio chiste). (De repente se compone y se da cuenta de que Cho no se ríe) Carnal ¿Ése es el chiste? ¿No lo entiendes? ¿¿No te causa gracia??

whelming rejection of rising fascism in Poland and elsewhere on the continent during the last year must be kept in mind.

Skepticism also prevails in the outlook for the other major country, India, to hold elections before the U.S. in November. Narendra Modi’s BJP continues to grow in power and insistence on Hindu nationalism. In contrast, the situation in South Korea is another truly bright spot for democracy, the prospects for all the country’s people and continued close cooperation with the Biden administration.

The prospects for democracy among middle and smaller countries are in many respects just as mixed as in other regions. In Latin America, Venezuela and El Salvador seem to be lost causes for democracy, while the Dominican Republic and Panama continue to progress in the quality of life for their citizens and the competiveness and durability of their still young and somewhat fragile democracies.

While Venezuela and El Salvador have flooded the western hemisphere with over six million migrants over the last two decades, the few who stand out from the D.R. and Panama seem to have been baseball players, entertainers, and fire fighters at the World Trade Center.

Africa may be the arena where the prospects for democracy that come from improvements in the qualities of governance, alternability in office, sanctity of elections, and representativeness are the greatest. All eyes will be on South Africa, but Senegal and Ghana will be watched closely in West Africa, Mali and Chad in the Sahel, and Rwanda, Namibia, and Mozambique more in mid-continent.

Although President Biden was referring only to the United States in his January 5 discourse, the fate of democracy will probably ultimately be determined here. Indeed, it was the renewal of open and insistent U.S. support for democracy around the globe by his administration that the prospects for democracy suddenly changed in 2021 and the number of countries experiencing decline drastically dropped while those improving increased, as we have just seen in Guatemala. Thus in 2022 and 2023, the margin of decliners was almost eliminated for the first time since 2006. As Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa of the Philippines commented recently to Politico, “We will know whether democracy lives or . dies by the end of 2024.”

Aunque hubo un retraso de nueve horas en inauguración, Arévalo asumió a su cargo ante la presencia del Rey Felipe IV de España, los presidentes de Colombia y Chile, una delegación estadounidense encabezada por la directora de USAID, Samantha Powers… y muchos otros líderes extranjeros, quienes así mostraron su aprobación. Después de haber sido testigo de cómo la corrupción y la creciente autocracia del país llevó a más de dos millones de sus ciudadanos a emigrar en los últimos años, la comunidad global ahora mira el potencial de Guatemala para regresar a su tradición de liderar la lucha centroamericana por la libertad y el bienestar de su gente.

Desde América Latina, la atención vuelve a Asia, donde se llevarán a cabo elecciones en Pakistán e Indonesia en febrero —en medio de abundantes dudas sobre la democracia… aunque nunca tanto como en las dos elecciones programadas en Europa del Este este marzo.

Las perspectivas para Rusia, donde cualquier indicio de oposición o crítica conduce al encarcelamiento o algo peor, son especialmente sombrías. Mientras tanto, Ucrania sigue ganando elogios por la apertura de su sociedad y su lucha contra la corrupción, pero las perspectivas para las elecciones previstas son inciertas dada la guerra con Rusia y la persistencia de la ley marcial.

Gran parte del interés en Estados Unidos también se centrará en las elecciones que se celebrarán en México el 2 de junio. In his peroration the Pastor explained that by appointing three Christians to the Supreme Court, Trump was helping retake control of our country after the breakdown that started with the 1960s apostasy due to “government banning of school prayer and forcing school integration.” Murray also points out his role in organizing a summit of other evangelical pastors with Trump whom they consider “the most moral President on record.” This meeting also apparently helped foster Murray’s participation in the American Restoration Tour with his colleague from Michigan and others.

Although Alberta does not say so, the political impact of the use of pulpits and activism of authoritative leadership of pastors like these must be enormous. Indeed, it’s hard to imagine how Republican Party staffers could be more effective in building what is now widely recognized as Trump’s popular base of support.

Part 2 of this inquiry into Trump’s corruptive influence on evangelical religion in America will look more closely at the increasing impact of the prosperity gospel, negative partisanship, hucksterism, “the disappearance of Christ,” and other effects of the spreading politicization that Tim Alberta reports in his visits across the country. The conclusion will focus on Protestant Evangelism in general and the outlook for politics as the presidential election year unfolds.
