Anatomy of the Stockton UFW Rally:

A Lesson in Grassroots Organizing Ed Ramírez, Linden CA

n August 20, 2022, a rally was held in Stockton, California for UFW marchers who were walking from Delano to Sacramento to build support for and urge Governor Gavin Newsom to sign AB2183 (Stone), the Agricultural Labor Relations Voting Choice Act. This article will briefly discuss the bill but will focus mainly on how the rally came into being.

If enacted, AB2183 would expand agricultural workers voting rights when deciding whether to unionize. Currently, elections can only be held on sites where farm workers are subject to intimidation from labor contractors and growers. The new law will allow farm workers to vote on sites other than growercontrolled sites and give them the option of mail-in-voting.

It is hard to determine the size of a crowd in an open-access area like a public park with no seats or gate receipts to count. UFW Director of Strategic Campaigns, Elizabeth Strater stated, in a Fox 40 News interview that 1,000 people attended the rally. However, the Stockton Record estimated the crowd at 300, which in my opinion grossly undercounted the turnout. Another observer, Stockton’s International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), Local 54, President Eric Reyes stated, that in his estimation there were at least 1,000 people if not more in attendance.

The turnout was impressive, especially, since Saturday broke a record for Stockton’s hottest day on August 20th at 105 degrees eclipsing the previous August 20th record of 104. Fortunately, the rally location, Constitution Park, had ample trees that provided adequate shade, and there was an abundance of ice-cold beverages provided gratis.

l 20 de agosto de 2022, en Stockton, California, se llevó a cabo un Mitin de Solidaridad con los manifestantes del Sindicato Campesinos Unidos (UFW) que caminaban de Delano a Sacramento para generar respaldo e instar al gobernador Gavin Newsom a firmar el decreto AB 2183 (Stone), “Agricultural Labor Relations Voting Choice Act (Libertad de Mesa Electoral para Campesinos Migrantes)”. Este artículo decribirá brevemente el mencionado proyecto de ley, pero se centrará principalmente en cómo surgió el mitin de apoyo.

Si se promulga, AB2183 ampliaría el derecho a voto de los trabajadores agrícolas al decidir si se sindicalizarán. Actualmente, las elecciones solo pueden llevarse a cabo a locales donde los campesinos están expuestos a intimidación por parte de contratistas laborales y rancheros. Esta nueva ley permitirá que los trabajadores voten en locales que no sean recintos controlados por los patrones y les dará, además, la opción de votar por correo.

Es difícil determinar el tamaño de una multitud en un área de acceso abierto como un parque público sin asientos ni boletos que contar. La Directora de Campañas Estratégicas del sindicato UFW, Elizabeth Strater, declaró en una entrevista con Fox 40 News que fueron 1000 personas las que asistieron a la manifestación. discussed having a parent, grandparent or other extended family member who was a farm worker and/or who participated in the historic 1966 UFW Cesar Chavez led march or participated in other important UFW sponsored events. Alice Marquez whose father Benigno Marquez, a diehard Chavista, marched with Cesar in 1966 while in his 80’s. She said that the rally brought tears to her eyes.

Not apparent to most, the Stockton rally was part of a larger organizing campaign initiated by Eriberto Fernandez, Civic Participation and Policy Organizer for the UFW Foundation, who had responsibility for organizing UFW supporters in cities all along the route to Sacramento. UFW organizers in the tradition of Cesar Chavez and Fred Ross were legendary for hands-on detailed plans for every facet of their initiatives. However, Eriberto did his organizing from a distance simultaneously coordinating with Stockton and other cities.

He established and authorized Town Committees to do the ground level organizing and tasked them with getting donations for the marcher’s meals, housing, and for organizing a rally. Publicity as well as networking to build community support was also necessary.

Based on a phone discussion that served as an interview, Eriberto asked Alicia Ramirez, of Linden, to become chairperson of the Stockton Town Committee and eventually to serve as the committee’s treasurer. She accepted and immediately began building membership and executing the items outlined on the detailed “Town Committee Checklist.”

The Town Committee Checklist included: food; housing; morning departure; entertainment, Sacramento Aug. 26th rally; identification of key supporters; and first aid care packages.

For example, under food the list included Gatorade, ice, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The Housing check list included: beds for permanent marchers (at least 25 beds); dinner; showers; and rides for one-day marchers. The feedback loop between Eriberto and Alicia facilitated strategies and problem solving in fulfilling the tasks on the checklist on a dayto-day basis. Additionally, Eriberto forwarded policy and procedures adopted by the UFW to protect marchers from COVID-19.

The Town Committee membership initially included Pastor Nelson Rabell, Roy Perez, Richard Rios, Saul & Sonya Serna, Armando

Valerio, and Lupita Vasquez. Maria Elena Serna and Ines Ruiz-Houston subsequently joined. Also, Jessica Medina-Betancourt, served as UFW representative and adviser, joined the group and organized and facilitated committee Zoom meetings. Later, Agustin Ramirez and Chris Christenson of the ILWU Local 54 joined. Eventually, Pastor Nelson and Maria Elena dropped out to focus on the Lodi rally.

Using the Town Committee Checklist and with support from Eriberto and later Jessica, Alicia developed concise agendas to guide meetings towards accomplishing the checklist items, and through concludes on page 24

s part of our ongoing commitment to be more environmentally-friendly and to ensure parents have quick and easy access to important information, we have transitioned to a digital flyer delivery system. The district has contracted with Peachjar to provide a digital e-flyer service. Peachjar sends approved flyers directly to parents’ email inbox and posts them online on all school websites.

With Peachjar, parents can easily find and view flyers, and take action immediately to sign up for activities and events. All flyers may be accessed by clicking on the Peachjar logo-button (seen in the graphic hereby) on the district and school websites.

Alternatives in the 2022 Election and Beyond

Outrage and Chaos vs. Law and Order Gene E. Bigler, Stockton, CA

O

n August 8, 2022, the FBI executed a search warrant authorized by the court and in the presence of Trump’s attorney to recover a trove of national security documents and other items that former President Donald Trump was storing illegally at his Mar-a-Lago resort. Trump reacted with outrage at the action which he called a “raid” and publicly admonished his supporters to stand up for freedom.

Despite the orderly and lawful manner in which some highly classified documents were returned to proper control, Trump’s action led immediately to a firestorm of protests, invective, threats, calls to arms and civil war, a violent attack on an FBI office, Republican leaders accusing the DOJ of Gestapo tactics, a warning by Homeland Security about the dramatic increase in domestic terrorism threats, fund raising campaigns by Trump and the Republican Party, and a near record of more than 3,000 related outcries an hour at one point on social media.

Looking ahead to the mid-term election in 2022 and the next presidential election in 2024 suggests a pattern of even more of the same. Trump continues to shape the selection of Republican candidates for local, state, and Congressional offices while promoting outrage against the 2020 election and chaos in society as the major antidote. Meanwhile, the Democrats respond with devotion to law and order and the creation of new opportunities in myriad other ways. l 8 de agosto de 2022, el FBI ejecutó una orden de allanamiento autorizada por los tribunales y en presencia del abogado de Trump para recuperar una montaña de documentos de seguridad nacional y otros artículos confidenciales que el expresidente Donald Trump se había llevado ilegalmente a su balneario de Mar-a-Lago. Trump reaccionó con indignación ante la acción, la que calificó de “redada” y conminó públicamente a sus seguidores a manifestarse por “la libertad”.

On the other hand, the Republicans loyal to Donald Trump are campaigning to increase their representation in Congress and in state legislatures and other offices in the following ways: ►By ► denouncing and continuing abstruse measures intended to somehow overturn the results of the 2020 election and by taking revenge on Republican leaders who resist Donald Trump’s anti-democratic misdeeds; ►By ► voting to continue the high cost of 8 Joaquín AUGUST 2022

The virtues and vices of the two sides can of course be debated endlessly, but President Reagan once offered a remedy by asking people to consider whether they were better off than they had been under the previous administration. Reflecting on the contrast between the summer and fall of 2020 with the current situation is instructive: Under Trump the Pandemic was raging with over 2,500 deaths a day – one of the highest in the world -- and there was no plan for the distribution of the miracle vaccines the government had helped create, just advice about using bleach and miracle veterinary cures. Since Biden has taken over, the death and hospitalization rates have dropped down

to the levels of other nations, the lock downs have ended and America is back to work and play even though the rate of infection remains high because new strains of the disease have become more infectious and many Americans still refuse to get vaccinated.

Over 5 million jobs had been lost by September of 2020, the greatest jump in unemployment since the 1930s, and the economy was shrinking at a faster rate (almost a minus four percent) than it had grown during the first three years of the Trump administration when 4 million jobs had been created. During the first 18 months of the Biden administration, 6 million jobs were added to the economy (a new record) and unemployment dropped to an historic low level (3.5 percent) with economic growth surpassing China and reaching almost seven percent before the recent slowdown caused by the economic distress of China and other countries, supply chain bottlenecks, and other complications.

During the summer of 2020 our cities were tormented by demonstrations because of the lack of police accountability after George Floyd was cruelly murdered by four police officers despite the protests of onlookers and passersby, and President Trump abusively used authorities to clear Lafayette Square so he could raise a Bible indignantly for the cameras.

Then a riotous mob incited by Donald Trump attacked our capitol and tried to overturn the election on January 6, 2021, killing or injuring almost two hundred law enforcement personnel. Under President Biden, law enforcement officials are now warning that the greatest threat to our nation and greatest cause of violence is from extreme rightwing terrorist organizations.

lt i mamente, el mu ndo se est á dando cuenta de que la ‘libertad de prensa’ se está convirtiendo en un mero eslogan, no en una garantía para recibir noticias sin restricciones. No obstante, es in- Andy Porras teresante el hecho de que Sacramento, CA los medios corporativos estadounidenses no se indignen cuando su país vecino sigue perdiendo trabajadores mediáticos a un ritmo mucho más rápido de lo normal. Es más, mis colegas periodistas de Ciudad Acuña, México, me dicen que es “temporada de caza” declarada contra nuestros desafortunados colegas en México.

Y así es. Hacer un seguimiento de cuántos y dónde se están cometiendo estos atroces actos es como tratar de hacer un seguimiento de las múltiples distracciones que los medios corporativos combinan y etiquetan como “noticias”. Mientras tanto, las noticias fuertes y relevantes son difíciles de hallar. Las historias que muestran verdaderos actos de valentía o compasión humana se pierden entre los anuncios de nuevos automóviles o lo último que ha salido para ayudarle a oír bien.

Los mas recientes reportajes sobre cómo los valientes periodistas mexicanos son amenazados y asesinados por informar sobre la relación que existe entre altos cargos policiales y políticos con las bandas transnacionales de narcotraficantes parecen no tener ningún mérito para los editores y gerentes de redacción de los diarios estadounidenses. Algunos colegas chicanos independientes han llegado a sugerir que los medios corporativos guardan silencio porque las vidas de las personas de color no se consideran tan valiosas como las de los reporteros blancos.

Us and Them

They shoot journalists, don’t they?

L

ately, the world is realizing that ‘freedom of the press’ is becoming a mere catchphrase, not a guarantee for receiving news at any cost. Interesting, however, is the fact that there is no outrage from American corporate media when their neighboring country keeps losing media workers at a much rapid pace than normal.

My Ciudad Acuña, Mexico, fellow journalists, however, tell me we must focus attention on Mexico’s open season on our unfortunate colleagues.

And so it is. Keeping track of how many and where these atrocious acts are being committed is like trying to keep track of the many distractions corporate media slaps together and calls its product, “news.”

Meanwhile, real and hard news are hard to come by.

Stories showcasing true acts of human bravery or compassion are buried next to new car ads or the latest hearing-aid product miracles.

Timely reports on how courageous Mexican journalists are threatened and assassinated while reporting on relationships between senior police and political figures and transnational narco gangs seem to

La mayoría de los medios impresos o electrónicos, por ejemplo, reaccionaría si las autoridades del orden descubrieran cuerpos torturados y desmembrados metidos en bolsas de basura tiradas en alguna zanja de drenaje de su ciudad o área. Imagínese ahora si las investigaciones posteriores revelan que los restos son de trabajadores de prensa. Es similar cuando un policía recibe un disparo

mortal ¿Cuánto más rápido es su tiempo de respuesta en comparación con un Joe Shmoe siendo acribillado a balazos por un pandillero?

Puede usted apostar toda la subscripción anual de cualquier periódico que los periodistas no desestimarían detalle justificando una completa serie de artículos de primera plana.

Y eso sin mencionar los editoriales diarios — completos con caricaturas— advirtiendo que matar a un inocente periodista es un viaje de ida al infierno para el culpable.

A menos que algunos de estos excelentes miembros de la fuerza laboral de la prensa hayan tenido que refugiarse debajo de sus escritorios o detrás de sus cámaras, sin víctimas, solo algunos nervios de punta por temores haya hecho que el incidente se remontara a los años 50s y 60s —cuando el terrorismo contra la NAACP y otros activistas de derechos civiles era noticia común y de primera plana.

Pero, quizá todo esto no es, como decirlo, de interés periodístico.

Dr. Antonio Gonzalez, University of Houston professor of Chicano Studies, on a recent radio show stated: “In the American psyche there’s always been racial hierarchy in terms of importance assigned to certain lives over others. That’s the inescapable and undeniable reality of how our media covers things.” He went on to say, “It seems that here In America it’s not terrorism if people of color are the targets and white people are the suspects, some media executives say it’s not newsworthy.”

Most media print or electronic staffs, for example, would react if law enforcement officials uncovered tortured and dismembered bodies stuffed in garbage bags dumped in some drainage ditch of their city or area. Imagine if farther investigations reveal remains to be that of media workers. It’s similar when a cop is fatally shot. How much faster is their response time in comparison to a Joe Shmoe being riddled with bullets from a gang-banger?

You can bet a newspaper’s yearly subscription rate that the media folks are going to give you detail after detail in a series of front page stories. Not to mention daily editorials complete with cartoons warning you that killing an innocent journalist is a one-way trip to hell for the guilty party.

Unless some of these fine media labor force members have been taking refuge under their desks or behind their cameras, no casualties, just a few frayed nerves for its vile intent made the incident a throwback to the 50s and 60s, when terrorism against the NAACP and other civil rights activists was common and front-page news.

Then again, all of this wasn’t, eh, newsworthy.

l reciente fallecimiento de nuestro amigo, Raoul E. Mora, ha conmocionado a nuestra comunidad en Stockton. Pero su legado, como artista, amante del arte —y todo lo mexicano, perdurará a través de sus compañeros, familia y los muchos alumnos que tuvo como profesor de arte. Raoul fue, básicamente, maestro y coleccionista de arte —aprovechando cada oportunidad para ilustrar a cualquier interesado en el arte y la cultura mexicana. Fue una biblioteca virtual de conocimiento sobre México, su arte y artesanía… y entrar a su casa era como entrar a un museo de arte mexicano.

Tenía ojo para ver la importancia de recolectar y preservar todas las cosas hechas a mano, juguetes, tallados, cerámicas, máscaras, santos o retablos. A menudo lamentaba la pérdida de estas habilidades tradicionales en el arte popular actual y la abundancia de imitaciones en México ¡había incluso hechas en China!

Raoul tenía muchos dones, pero el que recuerdo con más cariño era su don de los cumplidos. Siempre hallaba algo que felicitar en todos y cualquiera. Muchas veces —durante los más de 50 años que lo traté— lo escuché felicitar a la gente por cualquier esfuerzo, no importa cuánto pequeño fuese. A él le gustaba llamarme “Renacentista Chicano” (lo que me halagaba mucho) ya que yo, además de artista, incursionaba como músico — tocando la guitarra y cantando— al igual que como escritor y poeta. A menudo se me acercaba por un artículo que había escrito para nuestra revista Joaquín, diciéndome “Richard, me encantó ese artículo que escribiste en...”, justo cuando pensaba que nadie había prestado atención a mis divagaciones.

Conocí a Raoul en algún momento a mediados o finales de los 1970s —cuando comencé a enseñar en Delta Community College. Él enseñaba arte allí a tiempo parcial, junto con su compadre, Rodolfo García. Fue un vínculo instantáneo. Con el tiempo, los tres comenzamos a organizar exhibiciones de nuestras obras —junto al trabajo de los estudiantes— en la galería de arte de la universidad… en ocasiones como el Cinco de Mayo y el Día de la Independencia de México.

Raoul... Más Que un Artista

Pronto agregamos a nuestro grupo informal a Joe Mariscal, maestro de Cerámica e instructor de Negocios, Mike Guerrero, como asimismo a estudiantes de arte como Roger Casillas, Albert Ramírez y Richard Núñez.

Lo que sentimos, individualmente o en grupo, fue el vínculo de nuestra cultura mexicana y la necesidad de espacios en los que compartir nuestros talentos como artistas.

Con el tiempo, sentimos la necesidad de nombrar a nuestro grupo de artistas. En aquel tiempo yo me mantenía en comunicación con mis Richard Ríos antiguos compañeros de Stockton, CA la escuela de arte: Esteban Villa y José Montoya —quienes acababan de establecer un grupo de artistas chicanos en Sacramento, llamándose a sí mismos Rebel Chicano Art Front, y luego usando el acrónimo RCAF que sonaba como Royal Canadian Air Force, por lo que se les conoció como “Royal Chicano Air Force”. Propuse la idea de formalizar el grupo nombrándonos también, y después de mucho debate ¡y hasta discusiones! nos decidimos por “Artistas del Valle”, ya que

a algunos de nosotros aún no nos gustaba la palabra Chicano, palabra que a originalmente tenía connotaciones negativas.

Después de un par de años más, nuestro grupo de artistas creció para incluir a más artistas como Luz Lúa, Jorge Elizalde, Juan González, Susan Bod y otros, y nos propusimos buscar un lugar en el centro de Stockton en el que pudiéramos exhibir nuestro arte y fomentar el arte entre nuestra juventud. Así, alrededor de 1997, el Mexican Heritage Center (Centro del Patrimonio Mexicano, o MHC) abrió sus puertas en la Calle Main en Stockton Centro. Allí, y a lo largo de los años, montaríamos muchas y destacadas exhibiciones, además de dar a luz en nuestras dependencias a una de nuestras exhibiciones más populares: “El Día de Muertos”. Ésta pronto se convirtiería una pieza central para el MHC. Pronto añadimos otros eventos anuales: “Navidad en el Valle”, y Cinco de Mayo.

Raoul fue una central figura en todo esto, comisariando muchas de nuestras exhibiciones. Su conocimiento de México y sus tradiciones fue fundamental para educarnos sobre los pormenores de cómo construir Ofrendas de Día de Muertos, y Nacimientos para la Navidad. Con el pasar de continúa a la vuelta

T

he recent passing of our friend, Raoul E. Mora, has sent shock waves through our Stockton community. But his legacy, as an artist and lover of art and all things Mexican, will live on through his colleagues, family and the many students he had as an Art teacher. Primarily, Raoul was a teacher and art collector, seizing every opportunity to teach anyone who was interested about art and Mexican culture. He was a repository of knowledge about Mexico, its art and folk art and to walk into his home is like walking into a museum of Mexican art. He had an eye for seeing the importance of collecting and preserving all things made by hand, toys, carvings, pottery, masks, Santos, or retablos.

He often lamented the loss of these traditional skills in folk art today and the abundance of knock-offs in Mexico, some even from China!

Raoul had many things gifts but one which I most fondly recall was his gift for a compliment. He always found something in everyone in which to compliment. Many times over the 50-plus years I knew him, I heard

him compliment others for any endeavor no matter how small. He was fond of calling me a “Chicano Renaissance Man” (and I loved it), since in addition to being an artist, I dabbled as a musician, singing and playing the guitar, and a writer and poet. He’d often approach me about an article I’d written for our Joaquin magazine, telling me “Richard, I loved that article you wrote on...”, just when I thought that no one had paid any attention to my ramblings.

I met Raoul sometime in the mid or late 70s when I began teaching at Delta Community College when he was teaching art there part-time, along with his compadre, Rodolfo García. It was an instant bonding. In time, the three of us began organizing exhibits of our work and student work at the college art gallery for events like Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day. Soon we added Joe Mariscal, ceramic teacher, and Business instructor, Mike Guerrero and student artists to our informal group like Roger Casillas, Albert Ramírez, and Richard Núñez. What we felt, individually or as a group, was the bond of our Mexican culture and the need for venues in which to share our talents as artists.

In time, we felt the need to name our group of artists. At the time, I had kept tabs on my old art school buddies, Esteban Villa and José Montoya, who had just established a group of Chicano artists in Sacramento, calling themselves, Rebel Chicano Art Front, later donning the acronym, RCAF that sounded like Royal Canadian Air Force, so they became known as “Royal Chicano Air Force.” I proposed the idea of formalizing the group by naming ourselves too, and after much discussion( and arguments), we settled on “Artistas del Valle,” as some of us were not yet keen on the word Chicano, a word that often held negative connotations.

After a couple of more years, our group of artists grew to include more artists like Luz Lúa, Jorge Elizalde, Juan González, Susan Bod and others, and we set out to search of a location in downtown Stockton in which we could showcase our art and encourage art among our youth. doors on Stockton’s Main Street. Here, over the years, we would mount many outstanding exhibits, and gave birth to our most popular exhibit: “El Día de Muertos”. These soon became

a staple for the center. Soon we added other annuals, “Navidad en el Valle” (Christmas in the valley) and Cinco de Mayo.

Raoul was a central figure in all of this, curating many of our exhibits. His knowledge of Mexico and its traditions was instrumental in teaching us the ins and outs of how to build Dia de Muertos ofrendas and Nacimientos (Nativity scenes) for our Navidad exhibits.

Yo colaboré en el comisariato de varias exhibiciones con Raoul. Antes de “colgar” la exhibición, deliberaríamos brevemente sobre el diseño del arte, principalmente pinturas y dibujos, a colgar en las paredes, y a veces alguna escultura o piezas tridimensionales.

Yo estaba trabajando en una pared, y él en otra y me decía: “Richard, ¿no crees que ésta pieza se vería mejor al lado de ésa, y aquella mejor aquí?”… señalando alguna pieza que yo acababa de colgar. La mayoría de las veces concordaba con él. “Sí, tienes razón, Raoul”, le diría, y de mala gana la cambiaba. Pero un día le dije: “No, Raoul, me gusta exactamente donde está”. Solo refunfuñó. Así era mi amigo.

En nuestras muchas exposiciones colectivas, siempre ansiaba ver las últimas obras de nuestros artistas, especialmente el trabajo de Raoul. El de él siempre fue especial, único, creativo y bien terminado, especialmente los hermosos altares que creó para nuestras muchas exposiciones de Día de Muertos. At our many group shows I would always look forward to seeing the new works of our artists, especially Raoul’s work. It was always special, unique, creative and skillfully done, especially the beautiful altars he created for our many Dia de Muertos shows. One I’ll al-

en las montañas y los desiertos. En su ofrenda, había construido pequeños montículos con pequeñas cruces que llevaban los nombres reales en cada cruz… ¡de aquellos que habían muerto cruzando nuestras fronteras!

Sus magistrales representaciones de figuras con lápices Prismacolor —con mucho detalle— eran especialmente hermosas, y usamos muchas de ellas en carteles que creamos para nuestras diversas exhibiciones. Eran artículos de colección. Un diseño que donó al Salón de la Fama Mexicanoamericano, que mostraba la cabeza de la Estatua de la Libertad rodeada de imágenes —un águila posada sobre un cactus con una serpiente en su pico, y una máscara del México precolombino, entre otras— se rifaba regularmente en sus ceremonias de inducción.

Muchas veces lo llamé para pedirle que donara una pieza para rifas de numerosos eventos, o que fuera un orador invitado para esto o aquello. Su respuesta siempre era “¡Cómo no!”

casa y admirar su exquisita colección de arte y artesanías mexicanas, creativamente colgadas por toda su casa: máscaras, figurillas, cerámicas —y escuchar la historia de cada pieza: cuándo la adquirió, en qué ciudad o pueblo de donde vino ¡y hasta el nombre del artista o ar-

On his ofrenda, he had constructed tiny mounds with small crosses bearing the actual names on each cross, of those who had died crossing our borders!

His masterful Prismacolor (colored pencil) renderings of figures done in great detail were especially beautiful and we used many of them on posters we created for our various exhibits. These were collector’s items. One design, which he donated to the Mexican American Hall of Fame, picturing the head of the Statue of Liberty bordered by images of an eagle perched on a cactus with a serpent in its beak, and mask from pre-Columbian Mexico.

Made into a poster, it was regularly raffled at their induction ceremonies.

Many times I called Raoul to ask him to donate a piece for raffles of numerous events or to be a guest speaker for some occasion and his answer was always, “Sure.”

But my favorite thing was to visit his home and gawk at his exquisite collection of Mexican art and crafts, artfully displayed throughout his home, masks, figurines, ceramics, and listen to his stories on each piece, when he acquired it, what town or village it came from, the name of the artist or artisan! Linda, his wife, would chime in “Raoul, you still have stuff in boxes you haven’t even unpacked!” He would just smile and go out to acquire more.

Often, I would run into him, or Rudy Garcia at Superior Thrift Store, in search of some discarded treasure, and he prided himself in finding it. “Look at what I got at La Segunda, he would say proudly, showing me a prize piece he had bought for 50 cents!

I could go on about Raoul, about role as a great husband, father or grandfather but we’ll leave that for another day. Mr. Raoul Encarnacion Mora, may you Rest in Peace, Amigo nuestro. tesano! Linda, su esposa, intervenía: “¡Raoul, todavía tienes cosas en cajas que ni siquiera has desempacado!” Simplemente sonreía y salía y traía más.

A menudo me encontraba con él —o con Rudy García— en la tienda de segunda “Superior Thrift Store”, en busca de algún tesoro desechado. Él se enorgullecía de haber encontrado algo: “¡Mira lo que compré en La Segunda, decía orgulloso, mostrándome como trofeo lo que había comprado por 50 centavos!

Monsanto: Monsanto: la Otra Ukraine’s Guerra de Other War Ucrania

ntre mayo y julio del 2018, Joaquín publicó información contenida en Wikileaks de Julian Assange sobre el proselitismo de Cultivos Transgénicos (GM) de Monsanto por parte de Hillary Clinton en todo el mundo. La entonces Secretaria de Estado (equivalente estadounidense a Canciller) se transformó en una paria moderna, convirtiendo las embajadas de EEUU en autoservicios de Monsanto. Bajo su tutela, se realizó promoción y fomento de agrotecnología en las embajadas de EEUU en Egipto, Sudáfrica, Alemania, Perú, Rumania, Colombia, Zambia, Mozambique, Bulgaria, Italia, Filipinas, Eslovaquia, España, Argentina, Polonia, Tailandia, Nicaragua, Malasia, Vietnam, etc. También se incluyeron en estas campañas de relaciones públicas el uso de amenazas contra líderes de otras naciones que no querían aprobar cultivos transgénicos para la venta en sus países”1.

En el pasado, a los fabricantes de pesticidas y productos farmacéuticos se les permitió enmascarar la verdad sobre los peligros de sus productos con la ayuda de los reguladores federales y globales de EEUU, lo que —a su vez— les permitió eludir el Advertencia de Precaución. rom May of 2018 to July of 2018, Joaquin published information contained in Julian Assange’s Wikileaks concerning Hillary Clinton’s proselytizing Monsanto’s GM crops throughout the world. She is a modern-day pariah turning U.S. embassies into Monsanto drive-thrus. Agritech promotions and lobbying occurred in U.S. embassies in Egypt, South Africa, Germany, Peru, Romania, Colombia, Zambia, Mozambique, Bulgaria, Italy, the Philippines, Slovakia, Spain, Argentina, Poland, Thailand, Nicaragua, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. Also included in these PR campaigns were the use of threats against leaders of other nations not wanting to approve GM crops for sale in their countries”1.

In the past, pesticide and pharmaceutical manufacturers have been permitted to mask the truth about the dangers of their products aided by U.S. federal and global regulators allowing them to bypass the Precautionary

Principle. In both Vallianatos and Jenkins’ “Poison Spring: The Secret History of Pollution and the EPA” (Bloomsbury Books, 2014) and GM Watch2, an intentional disregard of scientific methodology was noted: “most toxic chemicals enter the market without ever being tested for health and environmental effects” and that this laxity accounted up to 81% of approved GM crop varieties3.

Prior to Clinton’s disregard of the P recautionary P rinciple as Secretary of State, Ukraine had placed a moratorium on farmland. This popular ban was an attempt to prevent the “marketization” of Ukraine’s commons and small farms by domestic oligarchs and foreign corporations4. But, in 2021, Volodymyr Zelensky signed into law a bill permitting the private sale of farmland. Zelensky capitulated to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) who stipulated that the marketization of farmland be part of a “reform” in order to receive billions of dollars in loans from the IMF. Additionally, the IMF loan conditions required that Ukraine must also reverse its ban on genetically engineered crops and enable private corporations like Monsanto/Bayer to plant their GMO seeds and spray the fields with herbicides like Roundup(Ibid). At this point, U.S. embassies have been replaced by IMF mandates.

Back in 1992, “police action” in Somalia imposed genetically modified cassava “uprooting local communities”5. Then there was Paul Bremer’s Order 81 as the appointed administrator for the coalition’s Provisional Authority in Iraq that “mandated the purchase and planting of Monsanto’s genetically engineered seeds as part of its requirement before allowing for the ending of military continued on next page hostilities.” Order AUGUST 2022 Joaquín 17

81 “prohibited farmers from saving seeds from genetically engineered crops, and made it illegal for them to plant those seeds,” thereby serving as enforcer of Monsanto’s patents7.

Currently, Monsanto is “transforming millions of pristine acres [in Ukraine] into poisoned wasteland (...) Monsanto’s dirty hands are hugely involved”8.

All this has not been unnoticed on the East side of the planet. Russia interprets Western investment in Ukraine as part of a plot “to take over the world,” specifically for Monsanto to take over the world9. This is not denied by Monsanto whose goal is to “obtain a place of industry dominance in a world in which natural seeds were virtually extinct”10. At the same time, Putin has viewed Russia as the “world’s largest supplier of ecologically clean and high-quality food which the Western producers have long lost”7.

Thomas Block Lorain, OH In June of 2016, Russian federal law no. 358 was passed prohibiting the cultivation of GMOs. It was thought, at that time, that Russia and Ukraine, which supplied 25% of the world’s wheat, could “outcompete the U.S. and Canada by going organic”11. Arkady Dvorkovich, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister supported Putin: “Russia has chosen a different path.”

Nikolai Fyodorov, the agriculture minister, concurred that “the government will not poison their citizens.” One can claim that the present war is an “equally large but hidden global battle over GM grains, ownership, usage, and food pipelines”4.

Still, in February of 2017, Monsanto was constructing a factory in the Kirov Oblast, east of Moscow. According to writer and ecofeminist Joyce Nelson, the fields of Eastern Europe —including Ukraine— are “the most promising growth markets for (…) seed producers Monsanto and DuPont”12. And, outside of Russia, itself, Ukraine “is the biggest prize”13.

Zelensky promulgó una ley que permitía la venta privada de tierras de cultivo. Zelensky capituló ante el Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI), el que había estipulado que la mercantilización de las tierras agrícolas fuese parte de una “reforma” para recibir miles de millones de dólares en préstamos del FMI. Además, las condiciones del préstamo del FMI requerían que Ucrania también revocara su prohibición de cultivos genéticamente modificados (GM) y permitiera a corporaciones privadas como Monsanto y Bayer plantar sus semillas transgénicas y rociar los campos con herbicidas como Roundup(Ibíd.). A este punto, las embajadas de EEUU se habían convertido en ejecutores de mandatos del FMI. Ya en 1992, la “acción policial” en Somalia impuso la yuca modificada genéticamente “desarraigando a las comunidades locales”5.

Luego estaba la Orden 81 de Paul Bremer — administrador de la Autoridad Provisional de Irak luego de la invasión. Ésta “ordenaba la compra y plantación de semillas modificadas genéticamente de Monsanto como uno de los requisitos antes de permitir el fin de las hostilidades militares”. Específicamente, la Orden 81 “prohibía a los agricultores guardar y/o plantar semillas de cultivos modificados genéticamente”, fungiendo así como ejecutora de las patentes de Monsanto2&7.

Hoy en día, Monsanto está “transformando millones de acres vírgenes ucranianos en páramos envenenados…. Las sucias manos de Monsanto están muy involucradas”8.

Todo esto no ha pasado desapercibido en el Este del planeta. Rusia interpreta la inversión occidental en Ucrania como parte de un complot “para apoderarse del mundo”, específicamente para que Monsanto se apodere del mundo9. Esto no lo niega Monsanto, cuyo objetivo es “obtener un lugar de dominio industrial en un mundo en el que las semillas naturales estaban virtualmente extintas”10. Al mismo tiempo, Putin ha visto a Rusia como el “mayor proveedor mundial de alimentos ecológicamente limpios y de alta calidad que los productores occidentales han perdido hace mucho tiempo”7.

En junio de 2016 se aprobó la ley federal rusa Nº358, prohibiendo el cultivo de transgénicos. En ese momento, se pensaba que Rusia y Ucrania —que suministraban el 25% del trigo mundial— podrían “superar a EEUU y Canadá si se volvieran orgánicos”11. Arkady Dvorkovich, el primer ministro ruso (interino) apoyó a Putin: “Rusia ha elegido un camino diferente”. Nikolai Fyodorov, el ministro de agricultura, concurrió añadiendo que “el gobierno no envenenará a sus ciudadanos”. Se puede afirmar que la presenta guerra es una “batalla mundial igualmente grande —pero

Fragmentos de la novela ‘NO TEMAN A NADIE’ Chapter 3: Diego remembered how happy he felt that both of them were going to Berkeley. They had worked hard for the scholarships: both were also active in clubs and other student activities.

Diego was captain of his high school wrestling team, defensive captain of his football team and senior class president, Carlos had become his sidekick, helping out in school clubs while working before and after school.

Two years later, as good fortune would have it, Jimmy Mercado, a childhood friend from the same neighborhood attended UC Berkeley on an academic scholarship and doubled majored in criminology and biology.

Jimmy joined Carlos at Diego’s wrestling matches. The three friends thought that at Berkeley they would see each other more often. It didn’t happen. Carlos attended some of the wrestling matches to witness Diego victoriously overcome his opponents. The three met about a dozen times at the student union and occasionally Diego saw Carlos in the library, but that was it.

After their second year, Diego lost track of Carlos and Jimmy. Diego asked a friend who worked in Admissions to find out Carlos’ new address. His friend discovered that Carlos was no longer a student at Berkeley.

Whatever happened to Carlos? It had already been more ten years since Diego and Carlos lived in the Conejeras. The times hanging out with Carlos and Jimmy were his best childhood memories.

Homicide detective Diego de Campos was enjoying a cup of coffee when his cellphone buzzed. The call interrupted his trip to Memory Lane. Diego was urgently dispatched to inspect a crime scene of a double homicide and possible rape at the Claremont Hotel.

there were good trees in the neighborhood for one. To have a hideout up in a tree was too dangerous; one of them could fall off and get seriously hurt. A hideout underneath the foundation of one of the conejeras was out of the question; it was too dirty and sometimes the smell of a decaying cat or rat kept the kids from crawling under it.

After a two-day rain, the tall grass in the empty lot between Johnny’s house and the nearby ice cream warehouse was still too wet to be it. In an attempt to find a shortcut through the tall grass, the two boys trampled on the grass, and they quickly realized that the grass was taller than Carlitos, who was three inches taller than Diego. The idea of having a hideout in the tall grass came to both of them at about the same time. Diego looked at Carlitos and read his mind: the tall grass was hiding the two of them from the rest of the world.

Diego and Carlitos were excited that they had found a hideout. With their feet, they smashed down the grass, making a circle five feet in diameter, big enough to sit down in.

Unfortunately, the wet grass instantly soaked through their pants. In their excitement, they dug a one-foot deep hole in the wet dirt with their hands. Before they realized what they had done, the idea of digging a hole in the ground for their hideout came to them again at the same time and they kept digging until their foxhole was large enough for both of them to sit down to play games and solve crimes.

They used an abandoned door to cover up the foxhole. Next, the discussion revolved around whether they should call their club “Los Conejos” (Rabbits), “The Gophers,” “The Moles,” or “Los Zorros” (Foxes), but each name was rejected by one of them. One late afternoon, before it started getting dark, they took flashlights to stay late. They were too busy talking to notice the crickets signaling fellow creatures that it was safe to join them.

The soft wind died down, giving a false impression that the crickets were getting louder, when suddenly, a swarm of grasshoppers filled the night air, landing all around them, except in their foxhole. “That’s it! The name of our club shall be, “The Grasshoppers,” exclaimed Carlitos.

Diego didn’t object the club name, “Humm,” he thought out-loud, ”yeah, The Hoppers!”

The Hoppers worked independently on supplying the foxhole with equipment to make weapons: swords to slay dragons, wooden

pistols and rifles to hunt imaginary prey, and lances to protect the foxhole. Carlitos carved a perfect v-shaped slingshot out of a tree branch. He later would become a slingshot sharpshooter, on target with every pebble.

Carlitos envisioned himself as David and picked up the slingshot to slay Goliath. He saw himself as an underdog that will always triumph over adversity; and it was this vision of himself that he used as a guide in becoming an outstanding athlete.

For now, The Grasshoppers started planning their new mission: fighting crime.

The foxhole was getting too cluttered with weapons and the tin buckets used as chairs and tables, so the boys decided to expand the hideout. With a bucket, Carlitos dug a four-foot long tunnel below the surface of the ground.

The tunnel was needed to store weapons and equipment. Within two months, they dug four more tunnels, so there was one for each of the cardinal points.

Descartaron una cabaña en un árbol, a pesar de que había buenos árboles en el vecindario para una. Tener un escondite en lo alto de un árbol era demasiado peligroso; uno de ellos podría caerse y descalabrarse. Ni hablar de un escondite debajo de una de las conejeras —había mucho polvo y, muchas veces, el olor de un gato o una rata en descomposición les impediría meterse debajo.

Después de dos días de lluvia, el espacio entre la casa de Johnny y la bodega de helados próxima todavía estaba demasiado mojado para ser candidato a escondite. leza mojada instantáneamente traspasó la tela de sus pantalones, empapándolos. Sin darse por vencidos, con sus propias manos cavaron un hoyo de un pie de profundidad en la tierra blanda. Antes de que se dieran cuenta de lo que habían hecho, la idea de cavar un agujero en el suelo para su escondite se les ocurrió de nuevo al mismo tiempo —y siguieron cavando hasta que el agujero fuera lo suficientemente grande para que ambos se sentaran a jugar y resolver crímenes.

Hallaron una puerta abandonada y la usaron para tapar el hoyo. Luego, la discusión giró en torno a si quizás llamar a su club “Los Conejos”, “Los Topos” o “Los Zorros”, pero cada nombre fue rechazado por el otro. Una tarde, antes de que empezara a oscurecer, llevaran linternas para quedarse hasta tarde.

Estaban demasiado ocupados hablando para darse cuenta de que los grillos les indicaban a sus compañeros que era seguro unirse a ellos.

Los Hoppers trabajaron cada uno por su lado para dotar a la guarida de equipo y material para fabricar armas: espadas para matar dragones, pistolas y rifles de madera para cazar presas imaginarias y lanzas para proteger la guarida. Carlitos talló la rama de un árbol en forma de V para una resortera perfecta. Más tarde se convertiría en un francotirador de tirachinas, dando en el blanco con cada piedrecilla. Carlitos se imaginaba que era David y la honda era para matar a Goliat.

O sea, se veía a sí mismo como un desvalido que siempre triunfaría sobre la adversidad —y fue esta imagen de sí mismo la que usó como guía para convertirse en un destacado atleta.

Por ahora, los Grasshoppers comenzaron a planificar su nueva misión: combatir el crimen.

La guarida se estaba llenando de armas y cubos de hojalata —los que se usaban como sillas y mesas— por lo que los chicos decidieron ampliar el escondite. Con un balde, Carlitos cavó un túnel de cuatro pies de largo debajo de la superficie del suelo. El túnel era necesario para almacenar armas y equipamientos. En dos meses cavaron cuatro túneles más, de modo que había uno apuntando a cada uno de los puntos cardinales.

Raoul Encarnación Mora (1939-2022)

Mi Amigo. Mi Compadre

I

met Raoul Mora in an art workshop for teachers. This was in the middle of the year 1968. The Stockton School District put out a call for teachers to offer art techniques and an exchange of ideas that each teacher would offer. Among the group, there were only three Hispanic males of Mexican descent. Raoul and I soon realized that we had a lot in common.

We both came from families with the same taste, culture, and very dedicated to Mexicanism, history, customs, and love for art. I felt that I had found a relative who understood much of my views. We believed that we had to fight for our students to know more about the many cultures and art of the world.

Schools at that time did not offer much interest in enriching the curriculum. Raoul and I exchanged materials such as music, books, and artifacts to make the world of art deeper and richer for the students. This and other causes are what cemented a beautiful friendship that lasted years.

Much can be written by various acquaintances of Raoul. I will narrate a few of the many occasions that my compadre Raoul and I shared. Since Raoul was a collector of pre-Hispanic art, this was another link that

united us. My collection was not as vast as his. This led us to another unexpected experience. Raoul had a friendship with Mr. Peter Rodríguez. Peter was one of his art mentors, who founded the Museum of Rodolfo García Mexican Art in San Francisco, California.

Stockton, CA Mr. Rodriguez asked Raoul to lend him some pieces of pre-Hispanic pottery to exhibit in an art museum he planned to open in the city. He said yes; then he included me, and I also lent ceramics to Mr. Rodriguez. We did not know how important this project was going to be. We went to the museum opening in Raoul’s classic Chevy.

The Mexican Museum of Art was first opened in an area near Valencia Street. The place was small, but Peter designed it in a very beautiful and professional way.

Linda and Raoul —the Moras, their other friends, and I enjoyed tequila, mariachis, and socialized cheerfully. The inauguration of the Mexican Museum was a complete success.

onocí a Raoul Mora en un taller de arte para maestros. Esto fue a mediados del año del 1968. El Distrito Escolar de Stockton hizo un llamado a los maestros para ofrecer técnicas de arte y un intercambio de ideas que ofrecería cada maestro. En el grupo solo éramos tres varones hispanos de descendencia mexicana. Raoul y yo pronto nos dimos cuenta que teníamos mucho en común.Ambos veníamos de familias con los mismos gustos, cultura, y muy entregados al mexicanismo, historia, costumbres, y el amor al arte. Sentí que había encontrado un familiar que comprendía mucho de mis puntos de vista. Creíamos que teníamos que luchar para que nuestros alumnos conocieran más de las muchas culturas y arte del mundo.

Las escuelas en ese entonces no mostraban gran interés por enriquecer el currículo. Raoul y yo intercambiábamos materiales tal como música, libros y artefactos para que el mundo del arte fuera más profundo y rico para los alumnos. Esto y otras más causas fueron lo que cimentó una bella amistad que duró años.

Mucho se escribirá sobre Raoul por variados conocidos. Yo contaré algunas pocas de las muchas ocasiones que mi compadre Raoul y yo compartimos. Raoul era un coleccionista de arte pre-hispánico, lo cual fue otro vínculo que nos unía. Mi colección no era tan vasta como la de él. Esto nos llevó a otra inesperada experiencia. Raoul tenía una amistad con el Sr. Peter Rodríguez. Peter fue uno de sus mentores en arte y llego a fundar el Museo de Arte Mexicano en San Francisco, California.

El Sr. Rodríguez pidió a Raoul que le prestara unas piezas de cerámicas pre-hispánicas para exhibir en un museo de arte que pensaba abrir en la ciudad. Él le dijo que sí; luego me incluyó a mí y yo también presté cerámicas al señor Rodríguez. No sabíamos del importante resultado que iba a generar este asunto.

Fuimos a la apertura del museo en el Chevy clásico de Raoul. El Museo Mexicano de Arte se abrió por primera vez en un área cerca de la calle Valencia. El lugar era chico pero Peter lo diseñó de una manera muy bella y profesional.

got to have his moment in the history of art in California. This small moment started what is now one of the largest museums in California.

There were many moments like this during my friendship with the Moras. The most memorable one was when I took with them to Oaxaca, Mexico. Again, the purpose was enrichment. We wanted to get as close as we could to the art, the artists, and bring back the knowledge and artifacts. We were fortunate to meet a taxi driver, who immediately took us to our mission. We saw the Oaxaca not usually experienced. We were received by renowned artists, and were guests at a dinner at our driver’s home. From there, we experienced a visit to the curanderos.

The best part of this experience took place on our way back to the hotel. We were passing through a small neighborhood when we noticed a sandwich-board advertising the appearance of Chavela Vargas that evening.

Let me explain a bit. We were made aware of this Mexican singer in the early 1970s. When a teacher friend, Carlos Parra, played a Long Play that she had recorded.

Anyway. There was a small sandwich sign that read: “ONE NIGHT ONLY Chavela Vargas in Person”.

We made the taxi stop. We knew that this controversial artist no longer sang. What is she doing in Oaxaca during the Day of the Dead season? Could it be a joke? But how? Is she alive and singing? Well, we didn’t think twice. We got out of the taxi, bought tickets in the first row, and we were on our tiptoes with anticipation.

Yes, it was her. And she sang and told us about her life between sets. She confessed about her alcoholism to us. It tore our hearts out, and at the end of the concert, Raoul and I, like teeny groupies, tried to get backstage. Linda —laughing at us— called us dino-groupies.

We had to find a way to talk to her. In the end they let us into her dressing room- there, there she was. Sitting in front of a mirror. She asked us to come closer and joked with us about the Day of the Dead, saying, “I hope you didn’t expect to see me at an altar.”

We took a video of the entire show, and when we saw her there, she allowed us to take videos of her giving us her photo with a dedication... and a kiss on the cheek!

What a night! Raoul was stunned. Linda and I were too. Imagine what a trip, what happiness, and what a great company. This was art at its best. ¡Ay compadre Raoul! How I’m going to miss you.

seum fue todo un éxito. No sabíamos que este momento sería tan importante. Raoul llegó a

tener su momento en la historia del arte en California. Este pequeño momento inició lo que es ya uno de los mayores museos del estado.

Hubo muchos momentos como este durante mi amistad con los Moras. El más memorable fue cuando fuimos con ellos a Oaxaca, México. El propósito era el enriquecimiento cultural. Queríamos estar tan cerca como podíamos al arte, los artistas, y traer de vuelta el conocimiento y también artefactos artísticos. Tuvimos la fortuna de conocer a un taxista que inmediatamente nos llevó a cumplir nuestra misión. Vimos la Oaxaca que no es comúnmente visitada. Fuimos recibidos por renombrados artistas, y fuimos invitados en una cena en el hogar de nuestro taxista.

Luego, visitamos a los curanderos.

La mejor parte de esta experiencia tuvo lugar al tiempo de nuestro regreso al hotel. Estábamos pasando en el taxi por un vecindario cuando notamos un letrero-sándwich que anunciaba una presentación de Chavela Vargas esa noche. Habíamos conocida la música de esta cantante de la música mexicana a comienzos de 1970 cuando un profesor, Carlos Parra (QEPD), nos hizo escuchar un larga-duración (LP) que ella grabó. El caso es que había un pequeño rótulo que decía “SOLO UNA NOCHE Se Presenta Chavela Vargas” Hicimos parar el taxi. Sabíamos que esta controversial artista ya no cantaba. ¿Qué anda haciendo en Oaxaca en temporada de Día de Muertos? ¿Sería broma? ¿Pero cómo? ¿Está vivita y cantando? Pues ¡ni hablar! nos bajamos del taxi, compramos boletos en primera fila, y no hallábamos las horas que llegara la hora de la función.

Sí, sí era ella. Y cantó y nos contó su vida entre canción y canción. Confesó de su alcoholismo. Nos arrancó el alma, y al terminar el concierto, Raoul y yo —como quinceañeras— tratamos de ir tras el escenario. La esposa de Raoul, Linda, riéndose de lo que hacíamos, nos tildó de “groupie-saurios”. No hallábamos como poder hablar con Chavela.

Finalmente logramos que nos dejaron entrar a su camerino. Allí estaba. Sentada frente a un espejo. Nos pidió que nos acercáramos y bromeó con nosotros respecto que estábamos en Días de Muertos, diciendo “Espero que no esperaban verme en un altar”.

Grabamos video de todo el show y al verla allí nos permitió que tomáramos videos de ella dándonos su foto con dedicatoria… y hasta un beso en la mejilla. ¡Qué noche! Raoul estaba atónito... al igual Linda y yo. Imagínense que viaje, que felicidad, y que gran compañía. Esto fue arte al máximo. ¡Ay compadre Raoul! ¡Cómo te voy a extrañar!

Con golpes de tambor tan fuertes que mi cuerpo tembló, ¡Qué emoción!

Vinieron marchando los guerreros campesinos de hueso colorado al parque Constitución haciendo gritos inspiradores.

“Si se puede!”

“Que viva la causa!”

“Que viva Cesar Chavez!”

Sentí tu fuerza en mi papá a verlos marchar.

Que orgullo sentí, te veía entre de ellos en espíritu.

Quemados por el sol, Sudando y cansados, Haciendo un sacrificio para la causa, Para la justicia, Para nuestra gente, El campesino de hueso colorado.

La Virgen de Guadalupe enfrente de los marchadores Seguida por Dolores Huerta Símbolos grandes en nuestra cultura.

Gritos y más gritos se oían llenos de orgullo y felicidad.

Ahora entiendo mejor que nunca lo que me querías enseñar El sacrificio que se tiene que hacer para la justicia.

According to Alicia, the committee members were talented, contributing invaluable experience, knowledge, and access to resources. For example, Maria Elena Serna provided insight based on her vast experience as an UFW organizer during the height of El Movimiento, and Ines Ruiz-Houston, Vice President of the El Concilio, provided vans to transport marchers to & from the rally, tables, chairs, and tents for rally set-up. Saul and Sonya’s Catalyst (an Art & Wellness Center) became the depot for donations of water and Gatorade, and they procured a large breakfast coffee donation.

Saul also produced a video promoting the rally. Richard Rios provided art, signs and procured an important donation. Roy Perez networked with building trades unions and videoed/photographed the march and rally.

Armando Valerio provided networking with a vast number of community organizations to publicize and procure donations and arranged for clergy blessings. Through Armando’s network, Chris Rouppet San Joaquin County Supervisor Miguel Villapudua’s Chief of Staff provided essential support and facilitated key donations.

There were some outstanding donations.

As it turns out, Miguel Villapudua comes from a family of caterers and is a chef. Alicia met with him, and he initially agreed to prepare and donate dinners for forty marchers. As numbers changed and grew, he served 60 plus marchers his shredded chicken & mole, frijoPHOTO BY ROY PEREZ

les, and arroz and brought enough food to feed many more attending the rally who wanted to eat. No one was turned away.

Agustin Ramirez, ILWU organizer, procured donations for 8 motel rooms in Stockton and 3 rooms in Lodi. Through Roy Perez’ efforts local and regional labor unions and councils provided significant financial support. Jose Perez, Director of Communication for the Stockton Diocese, with the blessing of Bishop Myron J. Cota, disseminated UFW march and rally information in church bulletins throughout the parishes in the Stockton Diocese. Students from Franklin and Edison did an outstanding job collecting plastic bottles for recycling and clean-up during and after the rally.

Alfonso Grijalva collaborated with Alicia on the design and price for a T-shirt that he produced and sold for $20, $10 for Ed Ramírez the shirt & silk-screening Linden, CA (at cost) and $10 for the UFW. The T-shirt became a hot item, and he quickly sold out - 120 T-shirts. He was gratified that his hero Dolores Huerta wore his shirt to the rally and asked him to get more for her. All totaled, he raised $1200 for the UFW. Eriberto had liked the idea of a T-shirt and encouraged Alicia to pursue a vendor, and she settled on Alfonso. Eriberto also envisioned Mariachi playing De Colores as the marchers took their seats for dinner and that happened as well.

Officer, took over coordination with Alicia for the rally.

In the final analysis, Eriberto’s approach to organizing, while executed from a distance, was highly structured and effective. The Zoom meetings worked as well. However, all of this might have been enhanced by the fact that all the committee members from different disciplines were seasoned professionals.

On August 23rd in a text exchange with Alicia, Eriberto wrote, “Stockton’s rally was the best!”

Grijalva se sintió honrado de que su heroína, Dolores Huerta, no solo vistiera su camiseta en el mitin, sino que le encargó más. En total, recaudó $1200 para el sindicato UFW. A Eriberto le había gustado la idea de una camiseta y animó a Alicia a buscar un proveedor, y ella se decidió por Alfonso. Eriberto también quería que un mariachi tocara “De Colores” mientras los manifestantes tomaban sus asientos para la cena ¡y eso también se dio!

El último día antes del mitin, Connie Perez-Andreesen, UFW National Vice President, se unió a Alicia en la coordinación del mitin.

En el análisis posterior, el enfoque organizativo de Eriberto —aunque ejecutado a distancia— fue muy estructurado y eficaz.

Las reuniones de Zoom también funcionaron. Sin embargo, todo esto pudo también haber salido tan bien como salió porque todos los miembros del Comité eran profesionales experimentados en sus diferentes disciplinas.

una familia de hosteleros y es chef. Alicia se reunió con él y en un principio accedió a preparar y donar cenas para cuarenta manifestantes. A medida que los números cambiaban y crecían, sirvió pollo desmenuzado con mole, frijoles y arroz a más de 60 manifestantes y trajo suficiente comida para alimentar a muchos más que asistían a la manifestación y que querían comer. No se rechazó a persona alguna.

Agustín Ramírez, organizador de ILWU, obtuvo donaciones para 8 habitaciones de motel en Stockton y 3 habitaciones en Lodi.

ing violence and exaggerated expressions of grievance, such as those still growing from the Mar-a-Lago search, will not only produce more violence, but possibly even civil war.

At first the idea seemed to be coming mainly from alarmists, but now a group of mainstream historians have even called President Biden’s attention to the potential. Under these circumstances, a closer look at how the two parties have been conducting matters where citizen interests have recently been quite intense and where the parties are forced by law and other circumstances to interact are conducted.

One of the most important arenas where a great deal of party interaction is unavoidable is Congress. During the last two years, the Biden administration has advanced and passed so many major laws that it is being compared with the halcyon years of LBJ’s Great Society and FDR’s New Deal. What many observers fail to note is how many of these initiatives have passed with bipartisan support: the pathbreaking trillion dollar infrastructure law, the financing of COVID relief, the first gun safety law in three decades, the Pact Act which funds cancer treatment for veterans, the innovative CHIPS Act for dramatically increasing semiconductor production in the U.S., and most importantly the Inflation Reduction Act which funds clean energy development and the reduction of the costs of medicines and reduces inflationary pressure by creating a minimum tax for large corporations.

The contributions by Republican law makers were widely praised, and they were repeatedly honored in White House signing ceremonies. Meanwhile, a senior Republican Senate leader rejected such cooperation as “It’ll be like hell.” Indeed, bipartisan cooperation was so rare and strongly rejected by President Trump during his first two years that one scholar wrote an article to point out how a number of Republicans had in fact worked under the radar in cooperation with Democrats in the foreign policy area especially in dealing with Russia, somewhat the way it had been done at the start of the Cold War during the Truman administration.

Another important arena relates to the way those in one party refer to those in the opposing party. Both Democrats and Republicans see the other side as becoming more radical.

The pattern has gotten so negative in both our major parties that it has become a source of increasing concern and identified as political sectarianism. However, in this arena too, there is a big difference in what happens on the two sides. Nearly twice as many Republicans (and nearly a quarter of all their loyalists) than 26 Joaquín AUGUST 2022

Democrats, say that the use of violence against their opponents would be justified. Even such previously calm and conservative leaders as Senator Grassley of Iowa have raised alarm and animosity toward the FBI and the IRS by telling people the government (meaning “the Democrats”) is going to come after them with AR-15s.

The contrast of Trump’s prominence as a cult like leader on the Republican side is completely absent among the Democrats.

Good old Joe, Nancy, Chuck and a host of other Democrats put together don’t constitute the type of leader who evolves into cult manipulators, like Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, and the great Fascists of the 1930s. However, Donald Trump is now widely considered precisely the type who gradually moves from autocrat to dictator, as Daniel Ortega has just evolved, as he becomes the animator of increasingly more extreme maneuvers.

The mid-term elections this November have the potential for determining whether the United States will continue on the path of law and order and increasing opportunities for the American people that the Biden administration has established. Just a few more seats in the Senate and continued control of the House will enable Democrats to end the filibuster and provide even more opportunity under the rule of law for all Americans.

The results of the Republican primaries we have seen this summer clearly suggest just the opposite as nearly a score of candidates that Trump has supported because of their personal loyalty to him and their continued rejection of President Biden’s election victory in 2020 now dominate the party. The Trump supporters want to restore and even increase the reign of rage and chaos that we already experienced from 2016 to 2020. The stakes are so high now that not taking sides can only make things worse.

Por supuesto, los vicios y las virtudes de los dos lados se pueden debatir sin acabar nunca, pero el presidente Reagan una vez ofreció un remedio al pedirle a la gente que considerara si estaban mejor que bajo la administración anterior. Reflexionar sobre el contraste del verano y el otoño de 2020 con la situación actual es revelador: Bajo Trump, la pandemia estaba causando estragos con más de 2500 fatalidades por día, una de las más altas del mundo, y no había ningún plan para la distribución de las vacunas milagrosas que el gobierno había ayudado a crear, solo consejos sobre el uso de lejía y curas veterinarias milagrosas. Para septiembre de 2020, se habían perdido más de 5 millones de empleos, el mayor índice de desocupados desde la década de 1930, y la economía se contraía a un ritmo más rápido (casi menos cuatro por ciento) que el que había crecido durante los primeros tres años de la administración Trump —cuando se habían creado 4 millones de puestos de trabajo. Durante los primeros 18 meses de la administración Biden, se agregaron 6 millones de empleos a la economía (un nuevo récord) y

c ur r e n t el desempleo bajó a un nivel histórico (3,5 por ciento) con un crecimiento económico que superó a China. Llegó a alcanzar casi el siete por ciento antes de la reciente desaceleración… causada por las dificultades económicas de China y otros países, los atoramientos en la cadena de suministro y otras complicaciones.

Durante el verano de 2020 nuestras ciudades fueron abrumadas por manifestaciones contra la falta de responsabilidad policial luego de que George Floyd fuera cruelmente asesinado por cuatro policías a pesar de las protestas de los peatones y transeúntes que fueron testigos; luego, el presidente Trump usó la fuerza uniformada para despejar Lafayette Square y recaudar fondos fotografiándose levantando irrespetuosamente una Biblia para las cámaras. Mas tarde, una turba de insurrectos —incitada por Donald Trump— atacó nuestro Capitolio e intentó anular las elecciones del 6 de enero de 2021, matando o hiriendo a casi doscientos agentes del orden que se les opusieron. Ahora, y bajo la presidencia de Biden, las agencias del orden advierten que la mayor amenaza para nuestra nación (y la mayor causa de violencia) son las organizaciones terroristas de extrema derecha.

La mayoría de los estadounidenses reconocen cuán peligrosa y destructiva se ha vuelto la polarización de nuestra sociedad. Cada vez más analistas y comentaristas expresan su preocupación de que el creciente patrón de violencia y las exageradas expresiones de agravio —como las que siguen alimentándose del allanamiento en Mar-a-Lago— no solo producirán más violencia, sino posiblemente incluso una guerra civil. En un principio, la idea parecía provenir principalmente de alarmistas, pero ahora incluso un grupo de respetables historiadores ha puesto sobre aviso al presidente Biden sobre esa posibilidad. Dadas las circunstancias, se requiere de una mayor atención a cómo las dos partes han estado manejando asuntos donde el interés ciudadano ha sido, reciente e intencionalmente, enredado —y donde las partes están obligadas por la ley y otras circunstancias a interactuar.

Durante los últimos dos años, la Administración Biden ha avanzado y aprobado tantas leyes importantes, que se compara con los “años felices” de la Gran Sociedad de Lyndon Johnson y el New Deal de Roosevelt. Lo que muchos observadores no destacan es cuántas de estas iniciativas han sido aprobadas con apoyo bipartidista: la innovadora ley de infraestructura (casi un millón de millones de dólares); el financiamiento de mitigación ante el COVID; la primera ley de seguridad de armas en tres décadas; la Ley del Pacto que financia el tratamiento del cáncer para veteranos de las FFAA; la novedosa “la Ley de los Chips” que aumenta drásticamente la producción de semiconductores (chips) en los EEUU; y —lo de mayor importancia— la Ley de Reducción de la Inflación, que financia el desarrollo de energía limpia, la reducción de los costos de los medicamentos, y reduce la presión inflacionaria mediante la creación de un impuesto mínimo para las grandes corporaciones.

Las contribuciones de los legisladores republicanos fueron ampliamente destacadas y repetidamente elogiadas en las ceremonias de firma de la Casa Blanca. Mientras tanto, un alto líder republicano del Senado desechó tal cooperación diciendo que “será como el infierno”. De hecho, la cooperación bipartidista fue tan rara, y tan fuertemente rechazada por el presidente Trump durante sus dos primeros años, que un académico escribió un artículo para señalar cómo varios republicanos habían trabajado casi en secreto para cooperar con los demócratas en el área de política exterior —especialmente en cómo enfrentar a Rusia, parecido a como se había hecho al comienzo de la Guerra Fría durante la Administración Truman.

Otro aspecto digno de nota es la forma en que los de un partido se refieren a los del partido contrario. Tanto los demócratas como los republicanos ven que el otro lado se ha vuelto más radical. El patrón se ha vuelto tan negativo en nuestros dos partidos principales que se ha convertido en una fuente de creciente preocupación e identificado como sectarismo político. Sin embargo, también en este campo

hay una gran diferencia en lo que sucede en los dos lados. Comparado a los demócratas, casi el doble de republicanos (y casi una cuarta parte de todos sus incondicionales) dicen que el uso de la violencia contra sus rivales estaría justificado. Incluso líderes tan calmados y conservadores como el senador Grassley de Iowa, han alarmado con su hostilidad hacia el FBI y el IRS al decirle a la gente que el gobierno (es decir, “los demócratas”) los perseguirá con fusiles AR-15.
