More Than Public Health Is at Stake in America:

Morality and COVID Recovery Dr. Gene E. Bigler, Stockton, CA

L

ike many social scientists and other studious observers of American society, this author has been especially impressed with the public policy mistakes, miscalculations, and machinations which seem to provide the most insightful explanation of the great secular decline we have experienced for the last half century or longer.

The jarring growth of economic inequality, the increasing viciousness of racism, the disturbing loss of access to opportunity for working class Americans, the harshness of our justice system, and the spread of middle class misery due to health problems, drug abuse, and all sorts of personal tragedies always seemed to be mainly a political issue.

Recent developments in our response to the COVID Pandemic and thoughtful reflections on other aspects of our national predicament now lead many of us to see an underlying crisis of morality that society has not yet fully recognized.

The worship of a mantra of individualism has become so widespread in America that both its destructiveness and the degree of self-immolation that come with it still tend to be widely ignored, but the data now shout for recognition as a dreadful and completely avoidable fourth wave of infections threatens our return to normalcy.

America is again experiencing over a thousand deaths a day from COVID-19 after having dropped in early spring to under two hundred for the first time in over a year. The freakishness of behaviors, viciousness of personal attacks against authorities and frontline workers, and ludicrous alternative behaviors all accompany mindless denunciations over losses of personal liberty and cases of government tyranny over mask wearing, distancing provisions, and vaccination requirements at school board meetings, townhalls and other public forums.

omo muchos científicos sociales y otros observadores estudiosos de la sociedad estadounidense, este autor ha quedado especialmente impresionado con los errores de política pública, los errores de cálculo y las maquinaciones que parecen proporcionar la explicación más perspicaz del gran declive secular que hemos experimentado durante el último medio siglo o quizá más aún.

overshadowed by this personal freedom or libertarian fourth wave of infections.

Public health authorities, scientists, and government officials are today blamed for politicization of the management of the Pandemic, in contrast to the times when our society applauded similar behaviors for the dedication, wisdom, and dutifulness of their work in combatting polio, small pox, and other challenges to our wellbeing. The difference lies in the worship of personal prerogative and the terrible decline in our sense of civic responsibility that has been fostered as a backlash to the Great Society era.

It started with the opposition to school integration and other minority rights advances, spread to the suppression of labor unions, abolition of consumer rights, removal of protections for natural resources and blossomed into the worship of gun rights and opposition to public finance of health care or even the maintenance of basic services, such as clean water, and public transportation.

And before this article could be printed, the Texas anti-abortion vigilante law adds to the wave of anti-democratic impositions imposed on America by the rightwing worship of individualism for the few.

America has been slow to fully recognize the anti-democratic tilt that individualism run amuck has exacted on our society. When first noticed and labeled by de Tocqueville in the 19th century, individualism was confused with the drive of the common man for political and economic rights. Later struggles by women, immigrants, religious minorities, and even African Americans heaped praise on the individual efforts and sacrifices of leaders that stood in the forefront of their struggles for the rights conceded without struggle only to wealthy white men.

Just as most of us recognized how capitalism and free markets spread opportunity and enhanced productivity and made us all free marketeers, most also failed to recognize how easily unchecked ambition gives rise to monopolistic potential and the temptation 4 Joaquín SEPTEMBER 2021

to restore the aristocratic exclusivity of the original regal club of America’s slave owning planter class.

The possibility was not, however, missed

by America’s radical right as it has led the drive to revive plutocracy which underlies the degradation of democracy that has been dragging us down now for over half a century.

The details of the sad course into which we have fallen are laid out in Nancy MacLean’s pathbreaking study Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right’s Stealth Plan for America (Penguin Books, 2017). Mesmerized as so many of us were by President Trump’s latest machinations, this author included, many of us failed to recognize the bigger picture of our anti-democratic trend that MacLean has pointed out. Her work outlines and convincingly documents how our reverence for individualism twisted into the doctrine of libertarian personal freedom has been used to unify and orient the path adopted by the Republican Party since the corrupt bargain the party first struck with the Dixiecrat heirs of the planter plutocracy.

MacLean details the story of how James Buchanan’s school of public choice economics, inspired by the slavery protecting mechanisms first advanced by John C. Calhoun, was appropriated concludes on page 27 Moral y Recuperación del COVID viene de la vuelta

Estados Unidos ha tardado demasiado en reconocer la clara inclinación antidemocrática que este desbocado individualismo ha impuesto a nuestra sociedad. Cuando De Tocqueville lo notó por primera vez en el siglo XIX y lo etiquetó como tal, lo confundió con el impulso del hombre común por los derechos políticos y económicos. Crecimiento de Minorías inquieta al GOP:

Censo, Latinos y Supresión del Voto “El censo está dictaminado por el Artículo I, Sección 2, de la Constitución. Cada diez años, la Oficina del Censo de EEUU realiza un recuento de la población estadounidense, que incluye detalles demográficos clave como la raza y el género. Estos datos, a su vez, se utilizan para trazar distritos electorales, así como innumerables otras formas”.

l Censo de los EEUU de 2020 ha confirmado que ese país continúa siendo cada vez más diverso desde el punto de vista étnico y racial. Los datos revelan que la población blanca dominante disminuyó en número mientras que las poblaciones multirraciales, latinas y asiáticas, mostraron un importante crecimiento. Los demógrafos creen que los latinos constituyeron una significativa parte del aumento total de la población nacional entre el 2010 y el 2020.

Los nuevos datos del censo decenal que se han ido publicando desde abril de este año se utilizarán para determinar la redistribución de distritos del Congreso y la asignación de “cientos de miles de millones anuales en fondos federales”. También se utilizará para “todo, desde trazar los límites de un distrito escolar, hasta medir la diversidad en las fuerzas policiales y los directorios de la grandes empresas”.

A los activistas defensores de los latinos les preocupa que el aumento de la población latina no se traduzca en una mayor representación en el Congreso, en poder electoral, o en recepción de fondos federales, etc. El espectro de la manipulación ventajosa de distritos y la supresión del derecho a voto enturbia y amenaza el futuro de los latinos durante esta próxima década.

Sonja Díaz, directora ejecutiva y fundadora de Iniciativas Políticas y Políticas Latinas en la Universidad de California-Los Ángeles, observó que, “no es un simple problema aritmético, aquí hay intereses involucrados y cada estado tiene un proceso diferente sobre cómo se trazan las líneas —ya sea es la legislatura, o las comisiones independientes de redistribución de distritos— pero, al final y a través de su historia, este país ha reprimido el voto de las comunidades de color, inclui6 Joaquín SEPTEMBER 2021

Every ten years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a count of the American population, including key demographic details such as race and gender. These data, in turn, are used to draw up congressional districts, as well as in a host of other ways.”

Demographers believe that Latinos constituted a significant portion of the total national population growth between 2010 and 2020.

The decennial census “data drop” in April of this year will be used to determine congressional redistricting and the distribution of “hundreds of billions annually in federal funding.” It will also be used for “everything from drawing school district boundaries to measuring the diversity of police forces and corporate boards.”

Latino advocacy groups are concerned that Latino population growth will not translate into increased representation in Congress, voting power, or allocation of federal funding, etc. The specter of gerrymandering and voter suppression in redistricting loom large and threaten to undermine the political future of Latinos over the next decade.

Sonja Diaz, founding executive director of the Latino Policy and Politics Initiative at the University of California, Los Angeles, observed that, “It’s not a simple math problem, there’s politics involved and every state has a different process for how lines are drawn, whether it is the legislature or independent redistricting commissions, and ultimately, this country has had a storied history of vote dilution against communities of color, including Latinos and especially African Americans.”

The U.S. Census Bureau’s August 12, 2021 report entitled 2020 Census Statistical Highlight Local Population Changes and Nation’s Racial and Ethnic Diversity lays out specific numbers regarding the composition of the nation’s growing diverse population. The report includes the following categories and numbers: White

bling their “share over the past three decades.”

They are now the second largest racial/ethnic group in the country.

Multiracial gains, are significant with a 276% increase since 2010; however, the Census Bureau cautions that numbers may reflect improvements on the questionnaire’s design, data processing, and coding procedures that made it easier to identify as more than one race.

“The diversification of the nation is projected to continue, with whites falling below 50 percent nationally around 2045…”

Maybe the most striking number is among the nation’s under-18 population, where people of color are now the majority, at 52.7 percent. This trend will likely continue and demographers project that “between 2015 and 2060, the Hispanic and Asian populations are expected to approximately double in size, and the multiracial population could triple due to immigration and births.”

The white group’s percentage of the total population is “the lowest on record, driven by falling birthrates among white women compared with Hispanic and Asian women.”

Undoubtedly, young people of color will be important in the nation’s future growth, “not only for the child population but for our future labor force.”

In California, Latinos are now the “largest racial or ethnic group, growing from 37.6% to 39.4% over the decade, while the share of white people dropped from 40.1% to 34.7%.” California, Hawaii, New Mexico and the District of Columbia are now places where the white population is no longer the majority group.

Voto Latino CEO and President Maria Teresa Kumar is concerned that census data could be used to disenfranchise Latino voters.

Kumar pointed to the 2013 Supreme Court ruling in Shelby County v. Eric Holder which freed states with a history of racial discrimination from having to clear voting procedure changes with the federal government. The landmark decision gutted Sections 4 & 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Shelby County, Alabama had seen a 297% increase in Latino residents, the second-largest population growth of Latinos in the country, and the court decision undercut any chance of challenging discriminatory voting laws.

More recently, in 2019 the Supreme Court’s Rucho vs. Common Cause ruling blocked federal judges from intervening in partisan election maps, essentially allowing gerrymandering. This sets the stage for an “ominous redistricting cycle.”

In the final analysis, there is a strong possibility that Republican controlled state legislatures will see the “demographic shift,” or growing Latino and minority populations, as a threat and aggressively use census data to redraw congressional districts and boundaries to suppress their vote.

Kumar señaló que, en 2013, un fallo de la Corte Suprema de EEUU en el caso Condado Shelby vs Ed Ramírez Eric Holder, liberó a los Linden, CA estados con un historial de discriminación racial de obligarlos a justificar los cambios a su procedimiento de votación ante el gobierno federal. Esta histórica decisión desarticuló las Secciones 4 y 5 de la Ley de Derechos Electorales de 1965. El Condado Shelby, en Alabama, había visto un aumento del 297% en los residentes latinos —el segundo mayor crecimiento de la población de latinos en el país— y la decisión de la Corte descartó toda posibilidad de desafiar sus discriminatorias leyes para votar.

urante los últimos doscientos mil años, aproximadamente, el género Homo ha dominado la creación terrenal —mientras se mantiene relativamente inactivo en su evolución física, lo que sugiere una especie de cenit en su desarrollo corporal.

La especie “Originaria del África” de los últimos cien mil años es morfológicamente similar, si no la misma. El hombre, culturalmente, o mejor dicho, teológicamente ¡lo que menos lo describe es “estancado”! Y luego viene la especulación de Desmond Morris1: Se necesitaba quitarle las garras a ese “monotirano de la antigüedad”; la autoridad del individuo dominante necesitaba convertirse en un “espíritu cooperativo”. No obstante, “dados nuestros antecedentes originales seguía existiendo la necesidad de una figura todopoderosa que pudiera mantener al grupo bajo control —y la vacante se llenó con la invención de un dios”.

La potencia o fuerza de esta “tendencia” se ha heredado directamente de nuestros antepasados monos y simios. Todavía necesitábamos “someternos a un miembro todopoderoso y dominante del grupo”. Y, aunque el sentido religioso del hombre puede ser único, citando a Morris, nuestros antepasados homínidos facilitaron la evolución hacia esa persuasión religiosa.

En 1871, Charles Darwin, en su The Descent of Man (El Descenso del Hombre)..., declaró: “Mi objetivo [es]... demostrar que no existe una fundamental diferencia entre el hombre y los mamíferos superiores en cuanto a sus facultades mentales”. Recientemente, Daniel Horan2 ha enumerado aquellas características compartidas: instinto, intelecto, emoción, imaginación, memoria, lenguaje, estética, etc.

or the last couple hundred thousand years or so, the genus Homo, has dominated earthly creation while being relatively quiescent in his physical evolution, suggesting to some a kind of zenith in his bodily development.

The “Out of Africa” stock of the last hundred thousand years are morphologically similar if not the same. Still, culturally —i.e., theologically— man has been anything but stagnant! And then comes the speculation of Desmond Morris1: “The old-style monkey tyrant” needed to be defanged; the dominant individual’s authority needed to be turned into a “co-operative spirit.” Yet, “from our ancient background there remained a need for an allpowerful figure who could keep the group u nder control, and the vacancy w a s filled b y the

invention of a god.”

The potency or strength for this “tendency” has been directly inherited from our monkey and ape forebears. We still needed “to submit ourselves to an all-powerful, dominant member of the group.” And, while man’s religious sense may be unique, following Morris, our hominin ancestors facilitated the evolution to that religious persuasion.

Back in 1871, Charles Darwin, in his The Descent of Man..., stated, “My object [is]... to show that there is no fundamental difference between man and the higher mammals in their mental faculties.” Recently, Daniel Horan2 has listed those characteristics that we share: instinct, intellect, emotion, imagination, memory, language, aesthetics, etc.

However, British Anthropologist Robin Dunbar (in “How Humans Came to Be So Different to Other Monkeys and Apes,”)3 chooses to segregate man from his ancestors. His traits to loose man from his primate stock are religion and story-telling. In response, Horan critiques Dunbar a bit and explains that it’s not that “human beings are the only creatures capable of religion; rather, it’s that our species may be the only one so far to have evolved to practice religion in this way.” Then, too, Homo sapiens neandertalensis displayed an observance of burial rituals precociously impersonating modern man. H-m-m!

Dunbar’s story-telling is not so definitive, either, in separating man from the other primates.

The Book of Genesis is part of a broad mythopoeia of Near Eastern literature such as the Utukku Lemnutu, The Poor Man of Nippur, Adapa and the South Wind, the Book of Enoch, the Gilgamesh Epic, etc. (see “Creationism, Intelligent Design and Evolution: A Theological continued on next page

Perspective”3.

These ancient tales take us back many millennia into a different mind-set where abstract reasoning was absent4. Even Dunbar points out that story-telling promotes the social bonding that replaces grooming, releases endorphins, lowers blood pressure and contributes directly to producing a sense of community. No wonder, Koko, the gorilla, appreciated her picture books!

A story is a metaphor. In man, stories, oral, woven, or whatever, begin a quest for identity and meaning by establishing a person as a member of a larger group and may even provide an environment in which a purpose can be realized and internalized. For instance, the act of weaving in various Mayan villages is an expression of the village’s identity and Thomas Block its symbolism becomes Middlefield, OH a reference to the events and personalities that have brought these villages into existence, just like the books of the Old Testament reference the events and heroes of the land of ancient Israel. Mayan textiles, often replete with cosmic symbolism and ethnic heritage, serve as expressions of the beliefs for the individuals who are residents of these villages.

The act of creation or the “stretching out of the earth” by the four gods of the Chilam Balam has been conceptualized within a weaving paradigm for many of the Mayan people

since Pre-Columbian times. The stretching out of time and space “evokes an image of the weaver who readies the warp cords on her loom”5. The undulating topography of the Mayan mythos is composed of tangled nets, twisted threads, and matted folds. This cluttered conception of the earth and the crowded and disordered underworld are contrasted to the orderly, heavenly weave of vertical and horizontal elements in the sky. Where heaven and earth meet, there is a “giant cosmic seem” that is further envisioned as a giant spindle.

For many Mesoamericans, the universe was and is created out of “pliant cords stretched out as on a giant loom” (Ibid).

nismo, Diseño inteligente y evolución: una perspectiva teológica”3.

Estas antiguas historias nos llevan muchos milenios atrás —a una mentalidad diferente donde el razonamiento abstracto estaba ausente4. Incluso Dunbar señala que la narración de historias promueve el vínculo social que sobrepasa la imagen, libera endorfinas, reduce la presión arterial —y contribuye directamente a producir un sentido de comunidad. ¡No es de extrañar que Koko, la gorila, gustara de libros ilustrados!

ste Plan de Protección y Salud (HSP) reemplaza todas las versiones anteriores del Plan de Retorno al Salón de Clase del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Stockton. Este documento se adhiere a la Guía COVID-19 del Departamento de Salud Pública de California (CDPH) para Escuelas de Kínder a 12º Grado y la Guía CAL/OSHA, directrices que se aplican a todas las escuelas públicas y privadas que operan en California para respaldar a las comunidades escolares mientras implementan su plan para instrucción presencial segura, eficiente y total. Esta guía está diseñada para permitir que todas las escuelas ofrezcan y proporcionen instrucción totalmente en-persona a todos sus estudiantes de manera segura y consistente con el actual conocimiento científico sobre COVID-19.

This document is in accordance with California Department of Public Health (CDPH) COVID-19 Guidance for K-12 Schools and CAL/OSHA guidance, directives that apply to all public and private schools operating in California to support school communities as they implement plans for safe, successful, and full in-person instruction. This guidance is designed to enable all schools to offer and provide full in-person instruction to all students safely, consistent with the current scientific evidence about COVID-19.

CDPH will continue to assess conditions on an ongoing basis, and will determine no later than November 1, 2021, whether to update mask requirements or recommendations.

PHYSICAL DISTANCING: CDPH and CDC agree that in-person instruction can occur safely without physical distancing requirements when other essential mitigation strategies are implemented; safety measures such as universal masking in schools, classroom ventilation, and daily selfscreening promote both safety and in-person learning by reducing the need for physical distancing both indoors and outdoors.

Students will not need to be physically distanced during recess, lunch periods, or structured play periods, and masks will remain optional when outdoors.

MASK REQUIREMENTS: According to the California Department of Public Health, masks are one of the most effective and simplest safety mitigation layers to prevent in-school transmission of COVID-19 infections and to support full time in-person instruction in schools. Per state requirements, all K -12 students are required to use face coverings while indoors, despite vaccination status, and face coverings are optional when outdoors. mask directives could change as new guidance becomes available.

Persons exempted from wearing a face covering due to a medical condition must wear a non-restrictive alternative, such as a face shield with a drape on the bottom edge, as long as their condition permits it as per CDPH. Schools are required to provide students alternatives if they are not exempt from wearing a face covering under CDPH guidelines. Please speak directly to your child’s administrative team at your school site regarding those alternatives.

Stockton Unified School District will have face coverings available for students who inadvertently fail to bring one to school to prevent unnecessary exclusions. As we saw last school year, our students/families were understanding of the community need to wear a mask as

a mitigation measure against the virus, and we anticipate the same supportive response this year as part of ongoing safety measures for return to public school with the focus on remaining in school.

Stockton Unified School District offers alternative educational opportunities (Virtual Academy) for students who are not comfortable returning to in-person learning.

MASKS AND ATHLETICS To remain compliant with mask directives from CDPH, masks are a required safety component for indoor athletic practices, games, and events and must be worn by student athletes, coaches, and all who are in attendance, regardless of vaccination status. However, as it pertains to outdoor athletics, masks are optional.

MASKS AND BUSES/TRANSPORTATION Mask wearing is mandatory at all times while riding the bus.

s un retrato de estudio antiguo en blanco y negro los siete mirando rígidamente a la cámara; ni una sonrisa en el montón, ante un opaco telón pintado a mano, un bosque al estilo de los años 30.

En la última fila, parados de izquierda a derecha. son mis dos hermanas y un hermano.

En el extremo izquierdo, está John, el mayor, probablemente 17; El más alto, rígido; un soldado en atención Listo para inspección. El guapo Johnny; pelirrojo y pecoso, almidonado traje y corbata; John, que nunca fumó, maldijo, ni bebió un día en su vida, siempre trayéndome un par de calcetines de rombos para Navidad, pareciéndose tanto a su padre, Jacinto; quien en Navidad y El Día de la Madre, siempre fue el último en irse, siempre el último; Y que llamaba a mamá, “Madrecita”.

They all stare glibly, imprisoned by the lens, expressionless unaware of the drama, the triumphs and tragedies that awaited them in a new country. But conspicuously missing from the photo am I, still in my mother’s womb, the baby of the family, an addendum, an afterthought, the exclamation point to a story, a saga yet to be written.

An Economic Ode to the Selk’nam

At the ends of the earth south of the Pampas, Kenos kneaded matted roots and tufts of grass with moist lumps of soft mud and dark sand: Molded from the Magallanes were the Selk’nam of Tierra del Fuego, another miscalculated investment without sufficient capital -They were a misplaced mockery of Old World capitalist society: matted roots without chambers of commerce, tufts of grass without joint stock associations, soft mud without insurance companies, dark sand without banks, !Humanity without a promissory note!

Then Kenos traveled north.

To the bleached sands on the beaches of Capricorn he kneaded the paler skinned Koliot.

From the enconiendas of the north the Koliot came and there was now little room for the meager fires of the Selk’nam.

They became a vestige who could not discriminate between an Old World entrada and New World land, between Old World decrees and New World autonomy, between Old World sheep and New World guanaco.

They were an exaggeration who could outrun the Koliot on horseback, but whose flight could not outrun their bullets.

The Selk’nam, a fly-leaf in another ancient story of a people who fell beneath the critical threshold of survival.

fered to purchase what is now California from Mexico for $30 million. It was later revealed Polk was actually hoping his offer would be refused. It was. Then Polk hatched out his original acquisition plan, a war with Mexico.

It started with the US violating a buffer zone on the Texas border and when the Mexicans defended themselves, Congress agreed with Polk, that the US was being invaded so they deployed troops into Mexican territory in 1846 through 1849, eventually winning the war. Later, Polk got The Land Deal of the Century. Mexico’s cost for losing the lopsided and unprovoked war, was indeed overwhelming-the country lost more than 50% of its former territory, including present day Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California and most of Nevada, Utah, and part of Colorado.

“Ever since,” said a Texas Chicano museum curator, Dr. Jesus Medel, “seems that everything Mexican (with the exception of its cuisine) seems to irk many white Americans!”

That things became worse for Mexicans and those of Mexican descent, would be an understatement deluxe. The Californios and their paradise by the Pacific were no more.

Within a short period of time, both Mexican and Spanish landowners were kicked off their land or killed. Even some of the older families who had been here for almost 100 years were not shown any form of respect and were sent packing.

For some Native Americans the imaginary border ran between their lands, severing one group from another. As far as the U.S. is concerned, these Natives must go to an international border site before crossing into either country just to visit each other, celebrate a birthday, etc.

The Tohono O’odham Nation, for instance, has 28,000 enrolled members, of whom 1,400 live in Mexico. The tribe’s terrain once stretched from Hermosillo, 175 miles south of where the border is now, all the way north to the Gila River in Arizona and from Tucson west to the Colorado River. Today’s reservation encompasses a much smaller area, a 2.8 millionacre chunk of Arizona the size of Connecticut.

But people who identify as tribal members still live as far as 90 miles south in Mexico.

Politically speaking, the word “treaty” is defined as “a formal agreement between two or more states in reference to peace, alliance, commerce, or other international relations.”

Peace? We beg to differ on this one. While most Tejanos and Californios enjoyed a somewhat tranquil way of life prior to the bloody US-Mexico War, what followed was nowhere near the original intent of the documents 20 Joaquín SEPTEMBER 2021

produced by the early US and Mexican hired politicos. Alliance between the two countries has also suffered at times while commerce has mostly favored rich U.S. companies.

A quick check on the social calendar of both lands indicates no big celebrations on deck for the Treaty’s 173rd anniversary.

It seems today’s EuroAmericans have completely forgotten about 1848 and how the U.S. came upon vast territories in the Southwest. Mexicans, however, have a different mindset.

Scholars tell of an apocryphal conversation between a Mexican diplomat and a U.S. diplomat where the Mexican diplomat tells the U.S. diplomat, “The trouble with you guys is you never remember, and we never forget.” ¿Tratado o Maltratado? viene de la vuelta

a ciencia a demostrando cómo las inseguridades alimentarias marcan a las personas por vida. “Las consecuencias físicas y psicológicas a largo plazo del hambre son graves y tienen implicaciones para la salud de la sociedad misma”, escribió el periodista de ciencia médica Chris Baraniuk en Mosaic. As a business consultant and educator, I have seen firsthand how people with humble backgrounds offer strong characteristics in business development. Often “need” shapes the foundation of start-ups.

Startups survive by the willing to saying “YES” to everything needed. That willing behavior is a huge asset at a time when many others would naturally say “No”.

Every Dollar is worth it Food insecurity is an interrupted inflow of resources. As Lilly Loraine sang in 1979, “chicken today feathers tomorrow.” Startups behave in similar fashion. Business startup owners face uncertainty as they never know when the next sell will be; thus, they stretch the dollars to make them last until the next dollar lands.

Someone who has faced food insecurity has the natural training to plan with limited resources.

Every dollar must last until the next sell which may arrive slow.

In his “Advantages of Gene Acevedo Growing Up in Poverty” Stockton, CA research, Tom Corley learned that 41% of the 177 self-made millionaires were raised in poor households. He highlighted that those persons who experience poverty are more willing to take risks, the desire to change is great, they have superior work ethics, failure does not scare you as much, poverty removes rose-colored lenses, and they become comfortable with failure and setbacks.

If you grew-up with limited resources; use your natural set of skills in developing your business start-up. You may naturally have developed the building blocks of business start-up.

Kyoko se sentó al lado de dos jovencitas veinteañeras. El contraste de edades era más que obvio. Ella bien pudiera haber sido su abuela, pero bajo el ritmo de la música, los años adquieren invisibilidad.

yoko walked into the dance floor wearing high quality makeup. Her hardy lips, red like cherries, the shadow around her eyes happily shining, and the mascara elongated her eyelashes making her blinks slower and more flirtatious. Kyoko is an older woman, short and slender. She dances occasionally because, at times, a salsa song demands that her body moves beyond its limit, like when a strong wind sways a tree mercilessly and has to hold on by its nails to keep itself from falling. That is why she decides when to dance, she is careful, admiring the dancers for long periods of time. Those who know her wave to her and she greets them back with a warm smile.

Kyoko sat next to two young girls in their twenties. The age contrast was obvious. She could have been their grandmother, but due to the rhythm of the music, age acquires invisibility. A man who, for some reason, was nicknamed Diablito, walked up and asked her to dance. She said: “Uh, not right now, my calves are numbed.”

At the end of the song, she thanked Diablito with a hug and went back to her chair. Then, Diablito turned to his right and asked the first girl to dance: “Wan na dance?”

“No” she answered, making a

Though she was a calm and prudent woman, a great interior force invaded her.

Then she exploded. It wasn’t necessary to ask for help, she stood up without her legs being massaged and confronted the two young girls: “What do you mean you don’t wanna dance? Who do you think you are?”

The girls were speechless, incredulous before Kyoko’s figure who was yelling at them two inches from their face. Their eyes were terrified, inflated like balloons, so much so that they wanted to escape from their sockets.

The young girls wanted to do the same, but Kyoko’s figure kept enlarging, blocking the exit. She spread her arms like a flying eagle and started her discourse that kept the girls in their place: “How can you come to a dance club and sit there like statues? What? Don’t you know?

Can’t you see? They ask you to dance and you say no. You’re shameless.”

Kyoko was gesturing. With each word, her face and arms movement stood out, more exaggerated. Some dancers noticed Kyoto’s attitude and stopped dancing to focus on her.

The DJ, at first, thought that Kyoko was dancing by herself. However, he soon realized that something was wrong. He stopped the music. Everyone stopped moving, except Kyoko. She continued talking: “You paid ten dollars to get in here. You know how much money is ten dollars in Togo?

It’s a lot of money. You know where Togo is?

Of course, you don’t. What do you know? And here you are, wasting money, not dancing.

Now everyone was listening. Kyoko didn’t realize for a second that she had become the main character in the middle of the dance floor. The girls, instead, were static, like rocks.

Kyoko continued: “You come here only to sit and remain attached to the chair against the wall, like paintings, just to be looked at? And what do people would look at? You are not even pretty. Better you stay home, your mother can admire you.

You can be statues there. That way you don’t have to come here and embarrassed yourselves and make the leaders, who take the time to ask you to dance, feel like losers.”

Somebody probably felt sorry for the girls.

It was clear that Kyoko was right. Two young men came to calm her down: “It’s ok, Kyoko, calm down.”

“How do you want me to calm down. Don’t you see them, with their aluminum-like face?

Among the witnesses, a blond woman watching the scene, approached Diablito. She took his hand and walked to the middle of the dance floor. She hypnotized him instantly with her green eyes. Her moon-like smile seduced him whole and he followed along. With Manuel Camacho San Joaquin a seductive voice she said: Delta College “You can ask me to Stockton, CA dance anytime you want.”

–¿Cómo quieren que me calme? ¿No las ven ahí, con cara de aluminio? ¿A qué vienen, a qué vienen? Díganme, díganme. Mírenles la cara, de cera. Ni de cera, la cera tiene más vida.

No puede ser, no puede ser. Venir a un salón de baile y estar ahí nomás como maniquís, con cara de palo.

–Sí, sí, cálmese, cálmese–, y la acompañaron a sentarse.

Ella cayó en la silla con pesadez, exhausta, como haber bailado muchas piezas sin parar.

Les agradeció la ayuda con sonrisa pícara y permaneció ahí por un rato. Las jovencitas seguían pegadas a su silla sin moverse. Monday, June 27 Matli and I walked and walked in London. Sometimes I thought we walked about 11 miles a day or more. There were times we seemed to be lost, but we were not. Sometimes, I felt like we were walking in circles, but we weren’t.

It was just that the walks were so long and tiresome.

I recall one day that as Matli and I were walking, we stopped at a traffic light and Matli looked at a map. We must have looked lost because a government worker picking up trash, directed his question at us, “Anyone lost and requiring assistance?” I thought helping lost tourists was a great idea for the British government. I wanted this man’s assistance, but Matli was sure he knew where we were going.

We certainly needed assistance, I had charlie horses in my calves and Matli’s lower back ached.

I learned that you have to be in good physical condition to be a tourist. We walked to the London Eye, a huge Ferris wheel, which gives a panoramic view of London. My advice would be that if you go to London, skip this tourist attraction. In my opinion, it wasn’t worth the 14 pounds ($40 per person).

However, on the plus side, from the glassed-in bubble, we could see sites like Big Ben, the Tower of London, the London Bridge, and Scotland Yard.

Later on our walk, we saw as many dungeons, museums, and galleries as humanly possible on foot. Many of the Museums were free. We stopped and had fish and chips; Matli ordered one cold beer after another. One beer cost more than the fish and chips. Beer was expensive! The British do love their beer.

Tuesday, June 28 We trekked to the Imperial War Museum featuring the history of the Holocaust. It was interesting to get the European point of view of the Holocaust and their view on other wars.

As interesting as this is, it left us both feeling continued on next page very depressed.

Lunes 27 de junio Matli y yo caminamos y caminamos en Londres.

Yo creo que hubo veces que caminábamos más de 11 millas o más por día. Hubo momentos en que parecíamos estar perdidos, pero no lo estábamos. A veces, sentía que estábamos caminando en círculos, pero no.

Pensé que ayudar a turistas perdidos era una buena idea para el gobierno británico. Yo quería la ayuda de ese hombre, pero Matli estaba seguro de que sabía dónde íbamos. Ciertamente necesitábamos ayuda, tenía mis pantorrillas acalambradas y a Matli le dolía la espalda.

Aprendí que hay que estar en buena condición física para ser turista. Caminamos hasta el London Eye, una enorme rueda de carnaval que ofrece una vista panorámica de Londres.

Mi consejo sería que si vas a Londres, te saltes esta atracción. En mi opinión, no valía las 14 libras (40 dólares) por persona.

Sin embargo, por el lado bueno, desde la burbuja acristalada de la rueda, se pueden ver sitios como el Big Ben, la Torre de Londres, el Puente de Londres y Scotland Yard. Now I was no longer looking at London with the awe of a tourist, but rather through the eyes of a person who had lived through war-torn Europe. I especially felt this way when we returned to our hotel room. It now looked even more like a bomb shelter with screen-less windows that were opened to the rain and thunder.

I felt like I was back in time: circa 1930’s.

Oh, I forgot to mention that on our way back to the hotel, we accidentally ran into the same fish and chips place where we had dinner last night. The fish and chips were delicious!

I was so happy to be eating them that I inadvertently grabbed Matli’s beer thinking it was malt vinegar and poured it on my fish and chips. I was surprised that it poured Sonya Fe out so quickly.

Wednesday, June 29 Today we went to the Tate Museum and we saw the Frieda Kahlo exhibition. I saw some paintings by Frieda that I had never seen before. I felt as if I was in Mexico. It was a very inspiring art show. From there we went to the Tower of London. Matli and I both walked so far that I got another charlie horse in my right calf, just like yesterday. our hotel, we would stop along the way, take in the picturesque roads, rest a bit, eat ice cream and have a snack here and there.

I remember as we were walking past some young teens and one of the boys said to me in a shy voice “Hellooo!” He had a big grin on his face and I smiled back at him. Suddenly I wasn’t tired anymore. I told Matli, “I still have it,” as I walked at a faster pace. I guess, I am vain, egads! Matli’s lower back is hurting him, and the muscle in my right calf is getting really tight. We are both in pain, but we are having a good time laughing and complaining about our pains. I guess training on our treadmill back home helped us for this marathon pace and the upcoming ones as we travel further along on our trip.

Oh! we were having lunch outdoors and enjoying the view of the Thames River when a German man with his two sons, John and Keenan, asked if they might sit down and share our table. We all shared our adventures in London. As I was talking away and making the boys laugh, Matli was trying to send a mental message to me: “Don’t mention the Imperial War museum! Don’t mention the Imperial War museum to this German family!” Well I did! “Have you been to see the archives of the Holocaust at the Imperial Museum? They said they hadn’t seen it. It was a good thing they didn’t go there.

We spent the remainder of the day at the British Museum. You can’t see it all in one day. That evening we ate fish and chips, but this time I didn’t pour beer on mine. We didn’t walk as much today, because we have to get up early and go to France tomorrow. continues in the next issue…

Miércoles 29 de junio Hoy fuimos al Tate Museum y vimos una exposición de Frieda Kahlo. Vi algunos cuadros de Frieda que nunca antes había visto. Me sentí como si estuviera en México.

Fue una muestra de arte muy inspiradora. De allí fuimos a la Torre de Londres. Matli y yo caminamos tanto que tengo otro calambre en mi pantorrilla derecha, como el día antes. En el camino de regreso a nuestro hotel, nos fuimos deteniendo en el camino, recorriendo pintorescos pasajes, descansando un poco, comiendo helado o tomado un refrigerio aquí y allá.

Me acuerdo que cuando pasamos junto a unos adolescentes, uno de los chicos me dijo con voz tímida: “¡Hooola!” con una gran sonrisa en su cara. Le devolví la sonrisa. De repente ya no estaba cansada. Le dije a Matli, “todavía llamo la atención”, mientras caminaba a un ritmo más rápido. Será que soy muy vanidosa ¡qué le vamos a hacer! A Matli le duele la cola y el músculo de mi pantorrilla derecha se le estaba poniendo tieso. Teníamos dolor, pero lo estábamos pasando muy bien riendo y quejándonos de nuestros dolores. Supongo que la práctica en nuestra caminadora mecánica en casa nos ayudó para este ritmo de maratón, y los próximos, a medida que avanzamos en nuestro viaje. ¡Oh! Painting all collective action as an evil of socialism/ communism enabled Republicans to advance right-to-work laws to undermine the power of labor; dismantle public education to sap the ability and ingenuity of the masses; use voting rights restrictions to reduce the access of opponents to the polls; employ states’ rights to deter federal government protections of equal rights; advance regressive tax systems to protect wealth and undermine the resources of the people; praise parsimony and self-reliance to undermine welfare costs and the safety nets of the elderly, poor, mentally ill and underprivileged; sow crippling divisions of society over abortion rights, access to justice, and privatization of public services; undermine the trust of science in public health, environmentalism, and regulation of business; indoctrinate a cadre of judges into a warped conception of originalism and property rights, and propagate white supremacy all in the name of the supremacy of capital.

The contest over the rights of individuals versus those of the community that MacLean clarifies so brilliantly is as old as our society.

The Virginia colony elevated the individual and his property above all and even sanctified slavery in service to ambition. That tradition and the morality it entails has been modernized and expanded by today’s right wing and a great many of their Republican loyalists.

Their freedom has entailed the right to sicken their neighbors. The Massachusetts settlers embraced the concept of common good to protect their enterprise and help orient their ambition, and the tradition that underlies our true Constitutional heritage draws on that leftist ideal and our ability to work together and sacrifice for our collective interests in preventing the spread of disease to our neighbors. So much more even than our recovery from this pandemic is clearly at stake today.

educación pública para minar la capacidad y el ingenio de las masas; utilizar las restricciones de los derechos de voto para reducir el acceso de los opositores a las urnas; emplear los derechos de los estados para repeler las protecciones del gobierno federal respecto de la igualdad de derechos; promover sistemas tributarios regresivos para proteger la riqueza y socavar los recursos de la gente; elogiar la parsimonia y la autosuficiencia para socavar los costos de bienestar y las redes de seguridad de los ancianos, los pobres, los enfermos mentales y los desfavorecidos; sembrar divisiones paralizantes de la sociedad sobre el derecho al aborto, el acceso a la justicia y la privatización de los servicios públicos; socavar la confianza de la ciencia en la salud pública, en el medioambiente y en la regulación de los negocios; inducir una generación de jueces que justifiquen una tergiversada concepción del originalismo y los derechos de propiedad —y difundir la supremacía blanca, todo en nombre de la hegemonía del capital.

La contienda sobre los derechos individuales frente a los de la comunidad que MacLean aclara de manera tan brillante, es tan antigua como nuestra sociedad. La colonia de Virginia elevó al individuo y su propiedad por encima de todo e incluso santificó la esclavitud al servicio de la ambición. Esa tradición —y la moralidad que conlleva— ha sido modernizada y ampliada por la derecha actual y una gran parte de sus adeptos republicanos. Su libertad ha resultado en el derecho a enfermar a sus vecinos. Los colonos de Massachusetts adoptaron el concepto de bien común para proteger su empresa y ayudar a orientar su ambición —y la tradición en la que se cimienta nuestro verdadero legado constitucional se basa en ese ideal de izquierda al igual que en nuestra capacidad para trabajar juntos y sacrificarnos por nuestros intereses colectivos para prevenir enfermar a nuestros vecinos. claramente es mucho más lo que está en juego hoy —aún más, incluso, que recuperarnos de . esta pandemia.
