Aura is a jewellery piece that can contact your loved ones or any other emergency contacts in an abusive/ emergency situation.

Designed not to be recognised as a distress panic button and not conforming to the homogeneous and obvious design of panic alarm/buttons available in the market.

Design Brief “To design a portable wearable security accessory for women, (18-30) who suffer from abuse (sexual violence ) to contact help fast and effectively as well as make women feel more confident and protected.”

“Women who identify with the LGBTI community are particularly vulnerable to gender-based harm.”(UN News 2019) “In 2018 66% of girls aged told us they had experienced unwanted sexual attention or harassment in a public place.” (Plan International 2021)

Unique properties of jewellery like the materials, style, fashion can encourage innovative directions for the design of wearable technology and interactive accessories.

Connect app to Aura

Connect the app to Aura through Bluetooth, insert personal details, medical information, select emergency contacts that are desired to receive an SOS text message alert.

Light Alert

White LED light appears and alerts the user that an SOS text emergency has been sent if the user at the time is not able to reach the phone.

Make Test Alert

Make test alert to confirm that if in an abuse situation the information is sent, and right emergency contacts are contacted.

Turn off Light

If it’s desired, the user can turn off LED light with a continuous press (4 seconds) in the button.

Quick Double Press Distress Button

In in an abuse situation, a quick double press into the distress button will send SOS text emergency alert with a link with user location, personal details and medical information to selected emergency contacts.

Easier to press and The “Matinee” size discreet with button (508 mm) would press at the middle. be the ideal size. It is the medium size.

In terms of user experience, it would be easier to reach than for say the “Princess” size or “Opera” size.

Used as a pendant in bracelet. Can be used single handed if arm is being blocked.

Light placed from above from a detail on top of the product provided enough visibility to notify the user without being too overpowering (still discreet).

Spiga Chain Spiga chain that provides a strong chain link to secure the product made with stainless steel, being able to endure a lot of wear and tear for it’s strength properties and corrosion resistance.

2mm thick and length of 508 mm. (“Matinee” sizeMedium).

Light LED light to alert the user that an alert has been sent. PMMA (acrylic) transparent for the light to pass through easily.

Distress Button Cylinder Box Clasp Box Clasp provides a secure mechanism.

More accessible for users with less dexterity.

Also made with stainless steel able to endure wear, tear, friction and corrosion resistance (can resist sweat).

Distress Button has a smooth polished finish to allow for a quick double press and clean interaction.

Distress button with indentation so that is not in direct contact with surface, providing a safe area for the button to not be pressed in inadvertence.

Rubber Gasket

USB port with type C connector that can be placed from both sides following the poke-yoke rule.

Split lines - Rubber gasket in between the top cover and back cover to protect the components inside from water and dust with an IP55.

Aura Range Following Trends Following Abstract Notions - Geometric shapes.

Contrast between smooth (surface radii at the side) and angular edges with small fillets (at the top) giving a sense of elegance but at the same a feeling of being approachable and a feeling of purpose and utility.

Colour and material range Available in other monochromatic colours such as gold and silver like other pieces of jewellery. Electroplated with precious metals as well as chrome plating having a polished finish.

This gives a sense of customization to the user giving the possibility to choose the design that is most desired.

Available in Jade Green colour R-127 G-147 B-117- key colour for jewellery and fashion (particularly womenwear) having a semi-gloss finish.

PMMA light cover - transparent letting 92% of light to pass through - UV stability - resistant to light exposure. Manufactured through injection moulding, this manufacturing method provides an excellent surface finish, reproduction of detail and a rapid production of parts with tight tolerances.

Top Cover made with Aluminium Die Casting Alloy - 390 - B390.0 being very lightweight and anodized to create Jade Green colour and given a bright dip treatment (electro-brightening treatment) after to have a semigloss finish. Manufactured with High Pressure Die Casting using multi-slide die casting. Electroplated with a Zinc-Copper previously to then add the silver or gold finish layer on top.

PCB with a Bluetooth module, GPS module, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, switch, and USB port.

Distress Button made with ABS visible surfaces are electroplated having a chrome polished finish.

Manufactured with injection moulding providing an excellent surface finish and reproduction of detail to then be electroplated.

Designed for Use Chains Length/Size 508mm length necklace medium -ideal size for the product to be reached intuitively and fast.

Bracelet available from X-Small (127-140) to 3X-Large (203-215).

Quick double press and Continuous press Quick double press to send alert message at the back of the product to prevent false activations. Continuous press (4 seconds) to turn off LED light after the alert if desired.

Light Alert LED light will notify the user that help has been reached. This way the user doesn’t have to check the phone since in an abusive situation is not always possible to reach for the phone.

Customizable Aura is customizable and not completely attached to the necklace this gives the user the opportunity to place the product in other items if desired.

Single hand use If arm is being blocked user can still reach product because of the rectangular elongated shape.

White light (colour associated with feeling of calm and peace)appears when text alert has been sent to desired emergency contacts to alert the user that help has been sent if the user cannot reach the phone or doesn’t feel comfortable checking the phone in an abusive situation.

The same as the necklace, the bracelet follows the spiga chain link (with 2mm thickness) made up of multiple links that won’t easily kink or break, making it durable to be worn every day. Also made with stainless steel with a polish finish.

With the app is possible for the user to choose the desired emergency contacts (family contacts, friends, police, emergency number 999...) and choose to put or not medical information and personal details that are automatically sent to the emergency contacts when the distress button is pressed.

Having it’s own website also means the customers can learn more about the product, brand philosophy and history behind it. Website provides a minimal design in which home page explains product offer and reasoning.

Packaging is designed to provide a pleasant unpacking experience.

The product is placed inside a jewellery velvet pouch alongside the bracelet and necklace. Together with the product comes a plug and wire cable for charging.

Main packaging is made off cardboard with a black satin finish being 100% recyclable.

Silk Velvet pouch is made of a mix of natural fibres like silk, rayon and cotton being natural and biodegradable fibres to ensure it doesn’t linger in landfill.

Ribbon is made of silk cotton mix being a natural fibre and will biodegrade.

How to use - User Guide

Iron Replica Create and define an existing piece of 3D product design and recreate the 3D form accurately in 3D CAD.

Hand Orthographic The first step was to create an accurate hand drawn orthographic and use it as an initial base to create the Iron in Rhino 3D.

Final Model The main focus was to refine and learn new surfacing techniques and further develop my existing CAD skills, the iron is great product for this because of it’s complex surface. The goal was to create the best accurate model possible.

Digital Orthographic Doing a digital orthographic from Rhino3D was a great opportunity to spot any imperfections and measurements to be considered or solve in the future. It was also a good opportunity to understand the complex surfacing better.

“Despite the link between braille literacy and employment, braille literacy rates for school-aged blind children have declined from greater than 50 percent (40 year ago) to only 12 percent today.” (National Braille Press 2021).

“Many people believed that talking computers would replace the need to learn braille. However, listening alone is not enough. Research shows that braille provides a critical advantage for students to learn grammar, language, math, and science.” (National Braille Press 2021).

ABout KANO Kano is the make-your-own technology company.

It teaches children how to code.

After doing some sketches models and thumbnails, the chosen concept was an interactive toy for visually impaired children that teaches braille through putting together different shapes to form different objects and animals.

• Each shape has different Braille letters on the side.

• Correct shapes with the correct Braille letter are put together (with magnets) to make a word.

• This word is associated with specific blocks and when these are put together, they create a shape of an animal or other objects.

• Children can code when plugging the rasperry pi to the computer and change the braille dots to form differents letters.

• Examples of some of the shapes that can be created.

Design Language Very much like kano products, the braille kit it’s transparent which allows for the children to see the inner components and to teach children about technology.

Inner components are colourful which makes learning easier and makes the product look more fun.

The Design is also simple and easy to understand.

ORIGAMI An interactive book that encourages children (3 - 6 years old) to practise nondigital activities and reduce problems with technology addiction.

Why Origami?

Origami builds patience and encourages self-esteem, building confidence. It encourages self-esteem because it creates a sense of accomplishment when a piece is completed.

It can also encourage social learning. There is no age barrier in origami since there different difculty origami folds which attracts parents to participate as well.

Build The book begins with less complicated folds and advances to more complex folds, for a fluid learning experience.

Create When the origami pieces are completely folded, it’s now possible to create different scenarios like a forest, city, village and many others or create your own!

Entertaining It’s essential that the product is playful. At the this stage, starting at 3 the child’s self-play/play skills are now more developed (e.g. can cut along a line, build simple puzzle) providing possibilities for a learning playful experience.

It’s important that at first glance the product conveys confidence so that the child feels at ease with the product without feeling intimidated.

Children are intrinsically curious. Because of this it’s essential that the product helps to develop this aspect encouraging curiosity and imagination, conveying some type of challenge.

Play Designing and making a toy suitable for a child under 9 years old and redesigning it for mass production.

What is Play?

Why do we play? What does it take for a child to play? What makes the play experience? Are simpler toys more interesting than complex toys?

5 steps had to be kept in mind while sketching ideas : Elegant and simple solution, made predominantly from wood, exquisitely finished, 3 unique components, suitable for a child under 9 years old.

The Design The toy is made from wood.

Two types of wood were used: Oak for the main body and Ash for the wheels. These species of wood have different tones and different grain direction, creating constrasting between each other.

Process

Mass Production Redesigning for Mass Production and manufacturing.

To go foward with mass production it was important to identify a specific age range group (1-4 years old).

After this, it was important to start researching manufacturing processes, and what materials are best suited for a child under 5 years old.

• The main body is made out of a polymer, thermoplastic like white PP because it is non-toxic for children and safer. This would be manufactured through Injection moulding (a much faster manufacturing process).

• Two of the wheels are made out of an elastomer, it is a polymer with elastic properties. Black VMQ it’s very flexibility and soft to the touch and can have various colors, the manufacturing process is injection moulding.

• The other two of the four wheels are made out of cork. Some of the advantages of cork are: it’s very lightweight, waterproof it is also elastic and compressible.
