Time to remember Armistice Day 2018 will be a particularly poignant event for the whole country as we reflect on 100 years since the end of The Great War. In Luton it will be marked as part of the council’s 2018/19 Commemorations Programme.

All service veterans are invited to take part in the parade and morning service at Luton War Memorial on Sunday 11 November.

Later that day, memories and images of those who fought in WW1 will be projected onto the Town Hall.

Hundreds of light-up poppies will also be laid by children who created them at a special workshop held in October.

Remembrance Sunday has long held a special place in the lives of many of Luton’s veterans. Don Woodcroft, President of the Leagrave Branch of the Royal British Legion and an RAF veteran himself, has attended every event since first being taken by his father as a young boy. This year he will also be playing an important role in the service as he recites the Kohima Epitaph.

“As the nation thinks about the end of the ‘war to end all wars’, I hope the thoughts of all Lutonians will turn to harmony, peace and unity,” said Don.

In this very special edition, we meet the faces behind a brand new campaign to celebrate the people of Luton and the pride we have in our town. From champion boxer Jordan, who is helping other young people realise their potential, to Addie, who is creating art and theatre inspired by Luton.

And if you are looking for inspiration yourself, look no further! We have four pages dedicated to the very best events, music, theatre, art and more coming to town.

We also take a trip to High Town to find out how new business is flourishing and wander down memory lane as we mark 80 years of Luton’s very own airport.

Many voices one town Luton Life meets the faces of a new campaign launched to celebrate our diverse and vibrant town.

The stories of Jordan, Subhana and Addie will be told alongside five others in a series of short films, each showing the pride these young people have in the town and the positive contribution they are already making. And these films are just the beginning.

Meet Jordan. Despite a tricky start in life, getting into trouble both in and out of school, he turned his life around through boxing. The 23-year-old made his international debut for Team GB last year and now encourages other young people to get their gloves on and connect through sport.

Subhana (pictured below) began her teenage life in care, feeling isolated and restricted by stereotypes. She is now in the final year of a university course in youth work and believes passionately in giving a voice to every young person.

Addie (pictured above) is 26 and a freelance director and producer. She believes in the power of the arts to transform people and places. She wants to help put Luton on the map for its pioneering arts scene.

What do these three young people have in common?

They are all proud Lutonians whose stories will be told as part of a campaign which celebrates the town as a diverse and vibrant place to live.

‘Many Voices, One Town’ is a partnership between Luton in Harmony, Luton Council and Building a Stronger Britain Together, to celebrate Luton, its young people, its culture and its diversity.

Over the next six months, a whole range of projects will be taking place – from creative ‘slams’ prompting challenging conversations to brand new street art – to encourage more young people to work together, build relationships and celebrate their home town.

An advocacy training scheme will also offer teachers a chance to help their students build resilience and make their voices heard.

The campaign was launched in October

by Cllr Hazel Simmons MBE, Leader of Luton Council, government minister Baroness Williams and Lloyd Denny, chair of Luton in Harmony.

“Sometimes when I tell people where I live it is obvious their opinion of the town is formed by the headlines they have read, and that makes me sad and frustrated,” Addie said. “But I have grown up in this town – from nursery school to Warden Hill and then Ashcroft High – and I know people are what make it so unique and special.

Sharing their stories Klaudia Klaudia moved to Luton with her family when she was six years old and says the town has shaped her into the ‘Luton girl’ she is today. She works with a local Polish group to encourage different communities to come together and create for events such as the Luton International Carnival.

“I want people to come to Luton and see it as it is – especially its exciting art scene. I want to create art here and I want others to use local talent, to get people from all walks of life involved in telling stories and listening to others.”

David and Laura believe passionately in the power of performance to give young people a voice and connect communities. That’s what makes their theatre group so special.

NGYT (Next Generation Youth Theatre) has welcomed hundreds of young people who all have their own unique stories to tell.

DANIEL

“I have been helping kids since I was about 17,” Jordan said. “There is so much talent coming out of Luton it’s unbelievable. It’s a very supportive town.

Luton born and bred Daniel works with Luton Town Football Club to help young people find common ground through sport.

He shares his own experiences to help others choose the right paths through life and build a stronger community.

“I know what it’s like when you have been at rock bottom. I was never really at school: I was either bunking or kicked out at a young age.

Abdus

“So when there is someone there who’s been through what you’ve been through, kids can see that it is possible –wherever they are from – to do what they want to do.”

Abdus found confidence and a career as a coach through his passion for cricket. Now he shares this passion with young people, encouraging them never to give up on themselves no matter how difficult life gets.

The campaign will be supported by creative initiatives delivered in Luton by Revoluton Arts and training programmes delivered by Advocacy Academy.

LIGHTS, CAMERA... LUTON! In the spring of 2018, you may have noticed a strange retro look to the town centre and been surprised by the return of the Pink Flamingos. Not to the Mall but to the Arndale Centre.

There was quite a buzz in town with young people dressed in 80s gear, the music of Bruce Springsteen playing and lots of dancing.

The filming of BLINDED BY THE LIGHT was taking place in Luton. Based on the book, Greetings from Bury Park

by Sarfraz Manzoor, the film tells the story of a teenager discovering himself through the power of music as he grows up in Luton. It is a moving tale of the relationship with his father and his struggle with cultural and generational divides.

The movie will be released in 2019 and it will be exciting to see Luton as it was in the 80s, up on the big screen.

new biz Living the ‘High’ life High Town’s Victorian terraces were once home to the factory workers who helped make Luton an international centre for hat manufacturing.

Fast forward two centuries and its historic streets have become a welcome home for new business.

On High Town Road, Marjorie’s offers fresh pastries and a new take on a classic pie and mash.

“It’s a little breakfast joint for hungry customers and somewhere to catch up with friends, bring a bottle and watch films at the weekend”, Chef Director Alessandro Dinghile says. “It’s something new for High Town and I think that is a good thing”.

Together with wife Emma, Alessandro and his 25-strong team of Lutonians are behind the already successful Old Skool Pantry which opened just last year in Round Green.

Having trained at Barnfield College before joining the opening team at Luton Hoo in 2007, Alessandro returned to his hometown after cooking in kitchens around the world.

So why come back to Luton? “There’s just something about it isn’t there?” says Alessandro. “The commuter market doesn’t have as much provision as it could. Why not spend money here instead of London?”

That ‘something’ is also what attracted Barry Fearn to open gaming store Ahh Geek Out. But he insists all (not just geeks) are welcome.

“The idea was to make this a community space as well as a business and everyone has really embraced it.”

Barry, a born and bred Lutonian, opened his café last year.

It was the ‘diverse and open-minded’ community that convinced him High Town was the right location for his niche venture.

“We have been welcomed with open arms”, he says.

“This is a community where people look out for each other and I want our store to be an extension of that – somewhere the whole family can enjoy themselves.”

Luton people

Thousands of new jobs are becoming available in the town as a result of the Luton Investment Framework. Working with its partners, the council wants to make sure Luton people get these jobs and its £1.9 million Skills and Opportunities programme aims to make this possible.

You may have seen, in various locations across the town, a small white, branded bus. This Aspiration Centre is a hub of opportunity and it hit the road in May, travelling around Luton as well as being parked up in St George’s Square. Experts are on hand armed with information about training and education opportunities as well as signposting people to jobs on offer.

The centre continues to be open for business so if you want to improve your prospects, change careers, or are unsure about which pathway to take make sure you take a visit.

Passport to Employment also offers educational and training options to help people get access to a range of skilled jobs. The programme has been designed and developed in partnership with Jobcentre Plus, local employers and education providers.

Its aim is to make sure local people have the main skills that employers are looking for.

Launched with Vauxhall on board it is not only securing the future of the company’s van factory but also will mean 400 new jobs. The programme will be rolled out to other employers, meaning even more opportunities for local people.

Photos of summers at the seaside and the traditional food and clothing used to mark all sorts of celebrations are just some of the items the people of Luton chose to help tell the stories of their background and communities.

The Culture Chest project is an annual event, run by Luton Adult Learning, that highlights the traditions of people living in Luton.

Boxes are filled with traditional dress, photos, emblems, food, drink, and flags and presented to other students in the class. Talking about their culture and asking each other questions is a real opportunity to share and learn and understand the differences and similarities of the many groups of people living in Luton.

Luton Life explores just some of their stories...

KENYA Jane’s culture chest was full of items that symbolise her identity including spices, food, coffee, tea bags and jam, fabrics and accessories such as necklaces and earrings.

“Coffee is one of our main exports, and black beans high in protein are usually cooked for women after giving birth.”

Jane shared information on the lifestyle of the Masai tribe and the influence of Western culture, and about Kenyan’s famous wildlife and tourism.

BANGLADESH Purdey shared the culture of Bangladesh, the country of origin of her children’s father and found it a helpful tool in explaining part of the diversity.

“I included pictures of the country and a brief history, the currency - the Taka - traditional clothing for every day and items worn at festivals and celebrations. Taking part allowed me to explain the comparison with lives of people in Bangladesh and Luton.”

POLAND Marta enjoyed the chance to talk about her country and its traditions especially the food.

“We have spices, pickles and dried mushrooms. I was really happy to share the information with others, I was pleased to teach my children all about my culture.”

“I really wanted to let people know how warm and welcoming Kenyan people are.”

ENGLAND Focusing on childhood memories of visiting the seaside with her family, Karen talked about England. She demonstrated with pictures a short journey around three beautiful parts of England Norfolk, Devon and Cornwall.

“I shared recipes and the history of the traditional dishes that I love - fish and chips, hot pot, scones and cream tea and spotted dick and custard.”

Phrases and sayings also made up some of her culture chest and she was keen to get rid of some of the English stereotypes.

Airport at the heart of Luton’s take-off London Luton has been the UK’s fastest growing major airport over the last five years. It is now the fifth biggest in the UK, with just under 16 million passengers flying in and out in 2017.

That means it has been able to provide more than £50 million for charitable and voluntary causes in and around Luton over the last five years, courtesy of the council’s company LLAL which owns the airport.

Economic benefits are keenly felt too, with the airport supporting more than 30,000 jobs and contributing £1.5 billion per year into the local, regional and national economies.

An important consultation on LLAL’s early proposals for further growth was held in summer 2018.

More than 1,700 people visited a series of 19 community events to learn how it may be possible for the airport to handle up to 36-38 million passengers per year (mppa) from its existing single runway.

The consultation asked for comments about four options for development, and the approach to

managing impacts. More than 800 responses were received and are now being closely considered.

At its current rate of growth the airport will reach its current permitted capacity of 18 mppa by 2021, and LLAL plans to consult again next year on more detailed plans before it prepares and submits an application seeking consent from the government.

More than mobility We’ve all seen people on scooters whizzing about our towns and cities, and Luton is no exception. Yet what people may not realise is how important these vehicles are in the lives of those who use them.

The manual wheelchairs and electric scooters in our town are provided by Luton Shopmobility, and over the years the service has received significant funding from LLAL. Specialist scooters are expensive, costing up to £3,000, and LLAL contributions have enabled Shopmobility to buy three new ones this year.

When we are out and about, it can be very easy to concentrate on the scooter and not the person who uses it. But a recent survey of Shopmobility’s 400 members highlighted the very human impact on the lives of the people who use them: “It gives me back my confidence,” “I am now free to shop without pain,” “I make new friends,” “It gives me my independence back.”

Manager Jayn Harris said: “We are tremendously grateful for the money we receive. At one level it looks as if it is being given for machinery, but the real beneficiaries are the people whose lives are made fuller and richer through LLAL’s generosity.”

The Hat District in Focus The Hat District development will provide Luton with a cultural hub in the historic Plaiters Lea Conservation area of the town. Arts Council supports local museum!

Wardown House, Museum and Gallery received 3 year’s funding from Arts Council England, achieving National Portfolio Organisation status. The funding’s helped Luton Culture expand the collection and get more local people involved in this fascinating heritage site.

Initiatives like Theatre in Museums have brought new visitors to the Wardown. These interactive performances are designed especially for Wardown house and are based on its history and collections. Events such as The Lost Letter, The Secret Diary and the Time Traveller, have proved such a hit with families that Wardown is now producing performances for older audiences too. Catch Healing Wounds and A Christmas Carol this autumn.

Set in 1916 and drawing on Wardown’s history as a hospital, Healing Wounds explores the friction, fury and at times fun between three army officers, thrown together in a hospital ward to recover from war.

But a look back through the archives will show it has come on rather a long way from those early days…

The war effort Before the holidaymakers arrived and the airport was opened for commercial use in 1938, the airport played a valuable part in the war effort. Australia-born Edgar Percival was an integral cog in British aviation and in 1936 he moved his aircraft design and manufacturing company, Percival Aircraft, to a site near the airport. Stars touch down

A legend lands Luton also shared in the glory days of Concorde when, in October 1983, the supersonic aircraft touched down. Already aboard at arrival were some lucky Luton locals. Trips out onto the Tarmac for a closer look of its exterior were arranged by the council at 50p each.

Spice up your life Chicken Bhuna This healthy chicken curry is packed full of flavour, easy to prepare and a real crowd pleaser.

SERVES: 4

PREPARATION: 15 MINS

COOKING TIME: 40 MINS

INGREDIENTS:  2 onions - peeled and chopped

 25g root ginger - peeled and chopped

 2tsp ground turmeric

 half lemon juice

 2tsp garam masala

 4 garlic cloves - peeled and crushed

 2tbsp vegetable oil

 6 tomatoes roughly chopped

 2tsp ground cumin

 2 green chillies - de-seeded and chopped

 2tsp ground coriander

 6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite size pieces

 fresh flat leaf parsley or coriander and lemon slices to garnish

METHOD:

Place the onions, garlic, chillies and ginger in a food processor or blender. Add 3tbsp water and whizz until you have a textured paste.

Heat the oil in a large saucepan and add the onion paste. Cook over a medium heat, stirring for 3-4 mins then add the cumin, coriander, turmeric and garam masala. Cook, stirring frequently for 3 minutes until the paste begins to turn golden.

Add the chopped tomatoes and 300ml water. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, cover and bring up to the boil. Stir in the chicken and lemon juice and re-cover.

Cook over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken is tender and the paste and tomatoes have combined to make a thick sauce (add a little more water if necessary during cooking).

Leisure and retail £600 million of development is sought by 2020 Developments, the company behind Luton Town Football Club. Planning applications have been submitted for a stateof-the-art 23,000-seat stadium at Power Court, a site that would also be a venue for live music, retail and new homes, and for a gateway scheme at Newlands Park, near the M1 junction 10, incorporating high-quality offices, shopping and leisure.

The Mall already has more than 100 retailers and 20 million annual visitors, and its owner Capital & Regional sees further enhancement and integration with town centre regeneration.

What will Luton look like in 20 years’ time?

No-one knows for sure, but it could be very different.

The regeneration of towns and cities often takes time and can be a journey of gradual improvement. But a number of international developers and investors have come together to form the Think Luton partnership which is certainly speeding things up here in Luton.

Take a look at how some of these ambitious plans are shaping up and you get a good idea of what could be in store for us soon....

Employment Luton’s goal is to create 18,500 new jobs over the next 20 years. Subject to planning permission, 3,200 will be created at New Century Park, east of the airport, in the aviation and aerospace sectors.

A second investment by the council’s airport company would mean a further 2,000 jobs at Bartlett Square, next to Luton Airport parkway station, where office space and a new hotel are on the drawing board.

And at Butterfield Business Park a number of plots are ready now for high-quality design-and-build investment.

Transport Soon to link Luton Airport Parkway station with the airport terminal in well under four minutes is the fast-transit £225m Luton DART, already under construction and due to open in 2021.

Housing It’s an exciting time ahead with more than 2,200 new homes planned in Luton by 2020. This includes 95 at Marsh Farm and 344 in High Town. The council’s housing company, Foxhall Homes, has 370 proposed across the town, investors Strawberry Star are well advanced bringing 685 quality homes to Kimpton Road while Opto Property Group is delivering a number of housing developments across the town.

“Fostering is the

greatest feeling

in the world!”

This is how Jane, a foster carer for over six years sums up fostering. Together with her husband Andrew, they have provided a home to 10 children under the age of seven.

It was a chance meeting with a mum whose drug use had led to her child being taken away that set Jane on the path to fostering.

When circumstances changed a few years later, Jane remembered that devastated mum and she and her husband took the plunge and decided to foster.

“I had given up work to care for my son who had special needs but when he started school, I thought what can I do now? I remembered the mum I had met, and thought I can offer children a home and look after them until their circumstances changed.”

Children all have different needs and many different people have what it takes to foster. Unmarried partners including same sex couples living together, couples in a civil partnership and single people may care for a child for a few weeks, several months, or on a longer term. However, you must be over 21 and have a spare room.

So what motivates a foster carer to keep caring?

“Seeing the children we have cared for and how they have changed and moved forward, you know you’ve done a good job - it’s the greatest thing, there’s no other job that will give you the same feeling,” said Jane.

Fostering can be challenging but the rewards far outweigh any issues you might have to overcome. “It can be a very distressing time for the child not being able to live with their parent, no matter what their parent has done, they love them, so you need to take that on board. It’s your job to help them process everything that is happening to them. It can take time but eventually they do appreciate that you’re simply trying to help them.”

The couple felt supported every step of the way. “In addition to the training and allowances we get great support from our social worker”, said Jane. “She’s always at the end of the phone anytime we want her to answer any questions, day or night.”

Waste not, want not Cheat’s Cauliflower Cheese

Here’s a quick, simple and tasty idea for using up leftover cream and cheese.

SERVES: 4

Ingredients

PREPARATION: 20-30 MINS

Method

1. Cut the cauliflower into small pieces. Place in a pan and cover with 1 large knob of butter lightly salted water. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 5 minutes.

150ml cream Drain well, toss with the butter, 100g grated hard cheese cream and salt and pepper.

3. Combine the cheese and breadcrumbs and scatter generously over the top.

5. Serve hot or cool and freeze.

1 large cauliflower

Salt and pepper

2. Preheat the grill to medium high.

Place one layer of cauliflower pieces into a shallow ovenproof dish.

4. Place under the grill until golden brown and toasted.
