Doggy Daze of Fall

Welcome to our 10th Annual Pets and the City sponsored by our two legged friends at Doggy Daze, the upscale dog grooming salon and boutique in Central Phoenix. Special thanks to everyone who submitted their photos to be part of this special feature. The response was overwhelming! If you didn’t get picked there’s always next year. Together, we raised money for the Joshua Tree Pet Assistance Program again. Thank you all for your generous donations. Check out the coupon for $5 off any service or product at Doggy Daze on page 76.

Doggy Fight One of the best benefits of publishing is interviewing celebrities. We’ve interviewed everyone from Lady Gaga to Oscar winner Cloris Leachman. This month we interviewed salty comedian Kathy Griffin for the third time. This is her best interview—especially when our editor Deon Brown asked her if she would want to perform in a reboot the 90s sitcom she co-starred in, NewsRadio. Wait ... you’ll find out exactly what Kathy told him—it’ll surprise you! Check out the complete interview on page 42. We also interviewed E! personality, producer, writer and stand-up comedian (and dog lover!) Tony Tripoli. He

remembers his friend and colleague Joan Rivers when he performs in The B*tch Is Back! November 15-17 at Phoenix Theatre. His interview is on page 36.

Doggy Style Last year I mentioned my jealousy of my dogs and their carefree and lazy life. This year, I want to emphasize what we could learn from our four-legged friends: unconditional love! This election year has become ugly and divisive. Family and friends were torn apart, yet our pets are still happy to see you and chill with you. Think about if people were more like dogs what a better place this world would be. Enjoy this issue of “Pets and the City” and ION Arizona sponsored by Doggy Daze. If you don’t have a furry friend, I suggest you head down to the Maricopa County animal rescue shelter and bring one (or two ... or more) home. They’ll love you! Unconditionally!

Ham & Hound Tony Tripoli laffs it up.

By: Deon Brown Photo by Franklin Diaz

P

roducer, writer, host and standup comedian Tony Tripoli landed in Hollywood writing and co-producing the E! network’s Fashion Police, and for the Style Network on The Dish among other TV and cable hits. Tony worked closely with comedy great Joan Rivers, writing for Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best? and produced In Bed with Joan as well as opening for Rivers on tour. (Tony was given some of her cremains after her death, which he guards in a Fabergé style egg.) Tony returned back to Phoenix, his hometown. He often performs at local venues and travels regularly. He chatted with ION Arizona about, well, pretty much everything, including his best friend, Bingham, who’s logged about half a million miles in travel with Tony, and his stage show about Joan Rivers coming to Phoenix Theatre.

celebrity humiliation. I’m a simple man. ION: You came back to Phoenix, your hometown, after 30 years in Los Angeles. How does it feel? Tony: I have friends there I’ve known there for over 20 years, and that’s the key to surviving the bullshit. Fucking “Influencers.” I hope their phones blow up and burn their faces off. And you do, too, so don’t try to make me feel guilty. I moved back because my nieces are 3, 5 and 13. It’s a special time. The little ones think making jokes is a ridiculous job—and it is—so they are forever giving me new jokes for my act. So I hope you’re into poops and boogers … ’cause that’s my whole show now. ION: You were a Chippendales dancer in the early days of your career. What was that like? Tony: Ugh. You haven’t lived until you’ve watched two ‘roided out, straight, morons fistfight over a waterproof mascara.

ION: You’re a keen observer about everything going on around you and with current events. How do you keep up?

ION: Was there a seminal moment in your life when you realized that you’re gay? Who made you gay?

Tony: MSNBC all night. Because going to sleep in a rage is soooo good for you. Facebook first thing in the morning, because our asshole President can always do something worse. It’s a great mix of politics, friends trying to fuck people way too hot for them, and

Tony: Seminal, indeed. Christoper Atkins, Blue Lagoon. I sat in that movie theater feeling all the feels. God dayum! About 10 years ago a friend was at an event on my birthday, and he was there. My friend told Christopher that I credit him with my “awakening” so November 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 35

flaky guy who lacks their conversation skills. Oops. Too real? he said, “Let’s call him” and he left me a message saying, “I hear I made you gay, and you’re a reallllly big one, too! So, well done, me! Happy Birthday, Tony! Muah!” It was pretty amazing. ION: Bert or Ernie? And who would you choose? Tony: Bert’s single eyebrow is a dealbreaker, and Ernie looks ethnic, which I find especially yummy. But, if I’m fucking a puppet, It’s gonna be Gonzo … look at that nose! Damn. ION: We Googled “Tony Tripoli.” Further links suggest, “Try ‘Tony Tripoli boyfriend.’” One site guesses you might be “possibly single” with “no past relationships.” Well? Tony: It’s been 10 years since my last real boyfriend. Wow. That’s a fail. I’m looking, but, I’m 48 and totally selfsufficient, and I have a really great life. It doesn’t feel like something is missing, so, I guess I’m too picky? Or, more accurately, I’m not really willing to miss time with my nieces to be with some gorgeous but

ION: Someone on a web forum said, “Tony looks like the type of guy who’d fuck around with your boyfriend with hopes of you walking in to watch.” Thoughts? Tony: I like that some stranger thinks I’m an Alexis Carrington type. [Gay 101: Alexis Carrington is the legendary bitchy vixen on TV primetime soap, Dynasty (1981-89), for those of you who don’t know. — Ed.] I wish. And, no, I don’t want the boyfriend to walk in. I’ve never even had a three-way! Which is doubly-sad when you consider I’ve been on Two and a Half Men. That’s irony. ION: Tell us about your dog, Bingham.

Tony: I assume you set this interview up with him, since he runs the show. He’s a nine-pound Yorkie rescue who isn’t particularly interested in anyone or anything but himself. So, a total gay man.

ION: Does Bingham think you’re funny? Tony: He’s thoroughly unimpressed. He licks his own ass … should he lick mine too? Nah. ION: Tell us about The Bitch Is Back coming to Phoenix Theatre. Tony: I start with stories of what Joan was really like, all the trouble we got in for jokes I wrote, and juicy stuff like that. Then, Joe Posa, who was Joan’s favorite “Joan” impersonator, does an hour of her actual act. It’s fantastic to hear those wild jokes again, and Joe really captures Joan’s magical, frantic energy. It’s all done with love, and it’s a truly funny show.

dumb jokes, we put a smile on our face, show up early, do the time, get the check, and get the fuck out. It’s a gift and an honor, and I better never hear you bitch about it!” She was right. Though, in my defense, her check had a few more zeroes on it. ION: What would you like written on your tombstone? Tony: “Now am I thin enough for you bitches?”

ION: As a performer, writer and producer, you worked extensively with Joan Rivers, What was the best piece of advice Miss Rivers ever gave to you? Tony: I had five years with the legend. When she asked if I’d open for her on the road, I almost died. I joke that opening for Joan Rivers is a lot like having sex with a black guy: The first time, it’s terrifying. But, the second you finish, YOU CAN’T WAIT TO DO THAT SHIT AGAIN. Joan was a stereotypical Jewish grandmother. She wouldn’t start working ‘til she watched me eat something. Couldn’t stop trying to fix me up with old, old queens. “He’s in his early 90’s, Tony, a theater producer, and has more hair in his ears than on his head—but—he won’t hang on long, and you will have such a life after …” The angriest she ever got at me—and that’s a long list—was when I complained about a gig I was dreading. “You aren’t better than any gig, you asshole! If somebody wants to pay us to tell our

Tête-à-Tête with

Kathy Griffin

Everyone’s on the chopping block with comedy’s favorite chatterbox. Except Maggie. By: Deon Brown

R

abble-rousing comedian Kathy Griffin is currently on her “Laugh Your Head Off World Tour.” ION called her in Puerto Vallarta to talk with her about, well, everything—including a NewsRadio TV reunion. Maybe. Kathy: ¡Hola! ¿Como estas? I’ve relocated to Mexico to make sure they’re not gonna build the fucking wall. If Trump even tries to build the wall, I’m just gonna throw the Mexicans back into the States. I’m gonna take Selena Gomez and Eva Longoria and throw them back in! ION: This is our third interview with you. Last time we spoke I was forbidden to mention anything about Fashion Police. Kathy: I took quite a bit of heat for that. It’s very unusual for me to leave a gig. As Maggie would say, “Don’t ever turn down work, goddammit! You get up, wear it out and make it cute! If you don’t do this you’re gonna end up livin’ in your car, eatin’ dog food!” She’s been hittin’ the box. At 98 I don’t take it away. She called me last week—with no hint of irony in her voice—she was watching FOX News with her hearing aids off. (She likes the ladies on FOX because they wear a lot of makeup and bright colors. I’m not making this up.) She goes, “Kathleen, this is your mother. And I was watching my FOX news ...

my boyfriend Sean Hannity says that once a month you get on a bus with 39 other women and drive to Colorado and have sex with Barack Obama. Now, why would you do that, Kathleen?” I explained, “Yes, mom, I’ve been doing this for years.” It’s better just to go along with it. I say, “Thank you for your concern. I’ll try to cut down on my bus rides to Colorado to have sex with Barack Obama.” And she felt better. ION: Tell her you promise to bring condoms. Kathy: Then she’d go, “Goddamit! You’re being vulgar, sonofabitch!” She swears more than I do. ION: You’ve been a busy lady this past year! Kathy: My whole life changed since I talked to you; I do every show like it’ll be my last. When you’ve been

told by the sitting president, the Oval Office, and the government that you’re never gonna work again, you take that shit seriously. Sharon Stone told me to leave the country for five years ... and she’s my friend! I was, like, “Stoney! I have to work to make a living! I’m not a gorgeous Golden Globe winning movie star!” No president has ever done this to a comedian before. Not even to Lenny Bruce. ION: So, I don’t suppose you’ll be getting a Christmas card from the White House? Kathy: No, but I would love to go to Mar-a-Lago and just take a shit in the lobby. That’s one of my fantasies. ION: Say, weren’t you the spokesperson for Squatty Potty? Kathy: I was the face of Squatty Potty, excuse me! And the ad was called, ‘The Queen of Poop.’ They can take my crown, okay? I think I could be a kind of folk hero if I expressed myself by taking a shit at Mar-a-Lago. When you gotta go, you gotta go, right? ION: You released an autobiography in 2009. A lot’s happened since then. Will there be another? Kathy: I kinda want to do a book about the experience, because there are a lot

of tentacles to the story. A lot of it’s funny. Honey, my next call’s probably gonna be a death threat. People come up to me on the streets ... “You’re a terrorist! Get out of our country!” I’m serious. I read some of my death threats on stage. I get about 50 a day. The Trumpers don’t make grammar or spelling a priority. The show is definitely a mix, but I don’t want your readers to think it’s a three hour lecture on the First Amendment. (Did I mention my show was three hours? No opener!) Through this process of a year and three months of Trump cult members thinking I’m a member of ISIS if not Al Qaeda (and apparently a fairly high ranking member.) I had to change my whole business model. I’m now what they call ‘polarizing.’ I embrace it. I’m a completely different artist now. I have a story to tell, I’m sort of proud of it because it’s got a lot prescient points that are important to every American. There’s a lot of disastrous parts to open up about—like the disastrous apology, the disastrous press conference, Anderson Cooper, and I am spilling the tea in Phoenix! I’m proud of this show. It’s got a lot of meat on the bone. I love doing standup anytime. I’m in the Guinness Book of World Records for more televised comedy shows—living or dead. I’m a TV animal. It’s like America still

hasn’t forgiven me even though I didn’t do anything wrong. You can be as offended by the photo all you want, that doesn’t bother me one bit, but the number of Americans who think that photo was illegal or I broke the law—that’s one reason I love the live show. I really break it down. I talk about the interrogation under oath by the Feds. There’s times where the audiences’ jaws drop, then I mix it up with something fluffy, like a Kim ‘n’ Kanye story. I have learned things really do take time. Like this tour. It’s been a big deal for me to

sell so well in a market like Phoenix, which is technically in a Red State. By the way, I expect and demand that the Tucson gays make the drive. ION: They’re re-booting all these shows -- Will & Grace, Roseanne, Murphy Brown. Would you reprise your role on a NewsRadio reboot? Kathy: Is that your bad joke? (A very long, very uncomfortable pause) Kathy: I wasn’t on NewsRadio, you fucking asshole! Do some fucking research, you piece of shit! I was on Suddenly Susan! You’re thinking of Vicki Lewis! Oh my God! I’m gonna call your boss! I don’t even know who your boss is, but you know who I’m gonna tell? I’m gonna tell Stevie Nicks! She’s a witch and she’s gonna put a hex on you! She’s gonna call Lana Del Rey, they’ll get a cauldron ... You’re gonna need a lotta sage, my friend. A lotta sage! You humiliated the LGBTQIA2345 community! You insulted me, but you gave me a good idea. Can I tell you something funny? (laughs) I would do a NewsRadio reboot in a heartbeat! I don’t think there would ever be a Suddenly Susan reboot. Trust me! (Mimics a voice) “... Uhhh, I know this is weird, but do you want to come back to play Vicki Lewis’s role on NewsRadio?” I’d go, “Suuure!” I want to work! I’d do anything to make people laugh! I don’t care if it’s a sitcom or a live show or a Squatty Potty commercial. I will do whatever makes people laugh. I don’t want to say I’ll do anything for a buck, but for the right price I’ll fuck a donkey. A peso is just as good. November 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 43

then dangle the chad blue. You think I’m joking? She’s hammered! She doesn’t even know!

ION: How are you spending Thanksgiving? Kathy: With my mother! It’s all Maggie, all the time! What if I tell her, “Hey Mom! I’m going to spend Thanksgiving in Colorado having sex with Barack Obama—get in the bus! Give her some box wine and a sidecar, she might. I’d have to Instagram Live the entire bus ride. “Well, I’ll go to Colorado, but I don’t know if I should have sex with Barack Obama ... I’d have to take off my diaper.” That would be epic! ION: What can we expect at your show? Kathy: I’m very excited! Phoenix is the final night! My show’s November 4, two days before the midterm ... I’m just gonna tell you this: I don’t care how much trouble it’s gonna get me in. On election day I’m gonna commit voter fraud. Hear me out! My mother has lost control of her liberal roots. I’ll wheel my mother into the booth and tell them I’m her Haitian caregiver, and 44

WWW.IONAZ.COM November 2018

And guess who you have to pay attention to now? The County Clerk! Remember Kim Davis? That’s how crazy shit’s gotten! You can have a County Clerk winning an election that probably four people voted in, and next thing you know she’s denying gay marriages! When I have protests outside my show, there’s all these crazies that hold up the Trump picture with writing, “Kathy Griffin Equals ISIS!” Sometimes I’ll ask someone at the show, “Hey, go grab some footage of the protest!” It’s always, like, seven people with teeth optional. My favorite new thing is to watch 2000 audience members— many of them LGBT—roll their eyes. It’s like, “Oh, girl. Go to the dentist.” A year ago I couldn’t even laugh at that. ION: Thank you for everything! And I can’t believe that Kathy Griffin called me a piece of shit. This is a red letter day. Kathy: I’m just glad it’s recorded! I expect it to be your outgoing voice mail or an audio Christmas card. Singers, Sinners & Surprises Bohemian Rhapsody Starring: Rami Malek

Can you do the Fandango? This biopic of “popera” rock superstar Freddie Mercury (Malek, Mr. Robot) chronicles the band Queen’s ascent and Mercury’s AIDS diagnosis. Will this rock you? It didn’t rock the critics. Release: November 2

Maria by Callas Gay men love a tragic diva. Queens adored Maria Callas, the greatest soprano of the the 20th century. The doomed La Divina ranks right along with those of Marilyn, Judy, Edith Piaf and Whitney Houston. This documentary is told in Callas’ own words, with never before seen footage. There’s more to music than just Britney and Gaga out there, folks. MariaCallasByCallasFilm.com

Boy Erased Starring: Nicole Kidman, Lucas Hedges, Russell Crowe Teenage Jeremy (Hedges, Manchester by the Sea) is outed by his Baptist preacher father (Crowe, Gladiator) and his mother (Kidman, The Hours). Bohemian Rhapsody

Walls

Two Oscars, five Emmys, three Peabodys, 10 Grammys, and 11 Golden Globes say Barbra Streisand can do whatever she wants. For all her many record-breaking and award-winning accomplishments as a singer, actress, film director, producer, screenplay writer, author and songwriter, Streisand’s dedicated social activism and philanthropy have always equaled her artistic output. With Walls, Bab’s mixes social justice themes like “Imagine” with uplifting ballads, “What a Wonderful World” and “What the World Needs Now.” Leading the charge is “Don’t Lie to Me,” where she asks you-know-who, “How do you sleep?” and lets him know “enough is enough.” Available Now

Ella Mai

OST

This is a footstomping celebration of Queen, their music and the lead singer Freddie Mercury, who defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet, opening the door for queer artists to come. Before we could have Troye Sivan’s “Bloom” we had to have Mercury’s “I Want to Break Free.” The film and soundtrack culminate in the band’s 1985 Live Aid performance. Enjoy the herstory lesson. Available Now

Ella Mai

British singer Ella Mai’s “Boo’d Up” was the sneaker hit of summer— despite being released a year prior to little fanfare. Legend has it that the nearly forgotten single was requested at an Oakland club only to wind up becoming a hit on Bay Area radio and eventually the entire U.S. Her eponymous debut strives to provide a much needed context to her singular success—withstanding some lazy attempts at replicating the formula, for the most part it achieves its goal.

A Queen & A Curse Dancing Queen Starring: Justin Johnson/Alyssa Edwards From the folks at World of Wonder who brought you RuPaul’s Drag Race and its spawn, look for this eight-episode docuseries on Netflix starring the RPDR alum (and coincidentally produced by star Johnson with RuPaul at the helm.) Johnson lives in Mesquite, Texas, running a dance studio. Throw in a lot of Dance Mom style stage mothers with their bratty Shirley Temple hopefuls, plus RPDR-style confessionals with lots of Edwards’ tongue pops, and there you go.

stories of the 20th centuries. Even Stephen King says so. Two feature films and a play have been adapted from the story. Netflix rolled out their equally unsettling 10-episode telling of the tale of terror, only loosely based on Jackson’s story in time for Halloween, and it’s still scaring the bejeebus out of viewers. Plot: The wholesome Crain’s buy a decaying Victorian mansion they intend to flip. They pack up their five kids and move into the remote, rambling pile that makes the Munster’s home at 1313 Mockingbird Lane look like Martha Stewart’s place—with ghosts. Lots of scary ghosts.

Johnson’s Pollyanna-like optimism and true grit is at times bizarre, yet endearing. The awful, Vaselinesmeared lens that made RuPaul’s early appearances on RPDR so laughable is worse than ever here, making the toothy Edwards appear even blurrier and more Simpson-like. Still, you can’t help but cheer for her.

The Haunting of Hill House Starring: Henry Thomas, Michiel Huisman, Timothy Hutton, Elizabeth Reaser, Carla Gugino Writer Shirley Jackson’s work often focuses on loneliness, abandonment, and neglect. (Remember The Lottery?) Her eponymous 1959 novel is considered one of the best ghost

Told in flashbacks, life at Hill House affects the Crain kids into their adult lives with disastrous effects. Can they move on from the past? Look for middle sister Theodora (Kate Siegel) providing a positive role model as a lesbian. You might be surprised to see E.T.’s “Elliott” all grown up as the dad. Easter eggs abound, and you’ll dive into more research about the spooktacular yarn.

Short Leash Hot Dogs H

ow much is that doggie in the window? Hot dog, that is! After nine years in business, starting with one humble food truck, Short Leash Hot Dogs is the top dog in Phoenix. And if there’s one thing we love, it’s a nice, fat, juicy sausage stuffed between two steaming, hot buns. (You were expecting that crack, right?) We decided that our “Pets & the City” issue was a perfect time to visit their new digs. After all, Short Leash was featured on the Food Network. That’s something to howl about! In addition to three food trucks, Brad and Kat Moore moved their brick ‘n’ their hot doggery to a spacious new location in the Melrose District. You’ll remember when the Roman Table, Harley’s Bistro, Toasted and Harvey’s Wineburger called the same address “home.” You’ll be begging for all of their 14 shared plates/starters. Need help choosing? We loved their Bacon Wrapped Poppers for $8. The jalapeño peppers are big, fresh and crisp with just enough heat to make your tongue snap. And who doesn’t love bacon? They’ve also got Fried Cheese Curds, Fried Green Tomatoes, Chicken or Cauliflower Wings and lots more. Plus, a variety of Loaded Fries (including poutine for you Canadians) will have you sitting pretty for $10. Try a Salad; they’ve got three, $9 each.

This is better than the Westminster Dog Show! Hungry? And these pups are all natural, gluten and nitrate free, all made locally. Choose your dog, just decide between the all-beef, bratwurst, spicy link sausage, apple gouda, chicken or veggie sausages. “Become a Naan believer!” Instead of mushy white bread, Short Leash uses a puffy, fluffy naan bread for a twist. They’ve got nine Signature Dogs for $8, each with a variety of unique toppings. The most popular is “Bear” with peanut butter, smoked gouda, bacon, bbq sauce plus Cracker Jacks. Premium Dogs are pedigrees and worth the $9. You won’t be blue if you pick “Sunny” with grilled peaches or pears (according to season) prosciutto, arugula, goat cheese and honey. Spice things up with the “Crispy Dog,” a jalapeño cheese stuffed wiener fried in a corn tortilla plus dragon sauce. You can

always add some sides: French fries, cole slaw, veggie chili, mac & cheese, chips, but we recommend the fried pickles. Thirsty? They have 80 cans of beer, ale and ciders, plus ten on tap to slake your thirst. If you’ve got a litter of puppies, relax! Don’t keep ‘em crated at home. Bring ‘em along! Short Leash has a Kid’s Menu. Will it go ‘round in circles? Let’s hope so! Don’t miss out on dessert from Rollover Donuts. They use all natural ingredients from local purveyors A variety of classic flavors, like old fashioned cake donuts and flavored glazed doughnuts made from scratch using a hand-rolled brioche dough as the base. They’ve even got holes, filled and fancies. (There’s so many things I could say here, but I’ll resist for the sake of decency.) They’ve got other extra-special treats, too.

Short Leash hosts special events through the year, like the pun-tastic “Wurst Festival Ever,” plus the Pinewood Derby Classic every April. They’re even part of a collaborative project with KJZZ and NPR with SoundbyteAZ.com, an interactive vehicle incorporating hot dogs with an entertainment stage and state of the art recording studio. They appear at community events or even small gatherings and will make your pack of hounds happy. Starting this month, music starts out on the patio every Sunday for Brunch. The old saying goes, “Money will buy you a dog, but it won’t buy you the wag of his tail.” At Short Leash you’ll get your dog, and leave wagging your tail.

Chris Krčmárik and Trevor Hort with Micah

There’s nothing like a puppy! Chris and Trevor found the rascally Micah, a Chinese Shar Pei, German Shepherd mix online, waiting for them at a shelter. He’s just 3-months-old, but Micah is fearless. “He will run to the biggest dog or cat because he wants to play.” He loves the ladies! And he loves to eat, too. “He shakes his butt when he’s fed,” Trevor says. There’s always a little fine-tuning with our furry kids. “He can ‘sit’ and ‘shake,’ but we’re currently working on his “inside voice,” the boys say.

Sean Farmer with Basil Buttface, Jr. You could say that Basil “weaseled” his way into Sean’s heart. The six-year-old critter’s favorite pastimes include sleeping 20 hours a day—and stealing Sean’s stuff. “He hides my keys and shoes, however we have an agreement that my Aldo boots are off-limits, and he’s never broken that promise.” Trusty Basil is a survivor. He’s winning the battle against Cushing’s Disease and lymphatoma, thanks to Sean’s attention as a certified veterinary technician. November 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 69

Rich Serrano with Copper These handsome dudes are both, modest and noble, claiming, “We’re the most eligible bachelors in Phoenix. (Hint, hint) “When we’re not taking long walks at Indian School Park, we’re trying to figure out how we can make the world a better place.” Copper is a 7-year-old Bassett Hound, rescued from the Humane Society and stubborn. Rich competed in the “Sexiest Bartender Contest” and says, “Check out Kobalt on Friday nights where I’m making signature craft cocktails.” (Another shameless plug!) How can you resist?

Michael Warner with #RileyGuy Michael’s lovable pal #RileyGuy is an 8-year-old Wheaton Terrier and comes with his own fancy hashtag. #Bougie, right? He has the distinction of being a Pet Therapy dog, too. Michael is the karaoke host with a song in his heart (and in his catalog) at Kobalt, as well as a yoga and wellness instructor. He says, “Nama! Stay!” and Riley goes into a perfect “downward dog.”

Kyle Irwin and Cesar Sedano with Niko & Frankie Something was missing since Cesar and Kyle met almost two years ago. And that “something was a dog. Niko is a rowdy little Pug, 1-year old. Two months ago the boys adopted Frankie, a 7-years old Daschund because our grown-up pooches need homes, too. The two doggos just became siblings and are quickly learning to love each other. Their hobbies keep them busy: Niko loves to chew on walls and Frankie knows a few tricks. 72

Benjamin Vasquez with Ziggy Stardust Purebred French Bulldog His tricks are limited to sitting for treats about 80% of the time and coming when he’s called. Occasionally. But mostly he does what he wants. “He ‘toots’ a lot, excels at ‘resting bitch face’ and can cast some serious shade,” says Benjamin. “He has a foot fetish and has a thing for bald heads; he loves to lick them.” Ziggy’s off the market: has a boyfriend—a Boxer named Baxter and a micro-pig, Boo Boo, is his bestie. His sister, Bowie, was unable to attend the photoshoot. November 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 73

Rebecca Winninger with Drake Drake, a Golden Retriever, is the grand senior in this year’s feature, approaching 12-years-old. This handsome fellow was a rescue. The day he picked Rebecca to adopt him was one of the luckiest days of her life. In 2013 he was one of the number one fundraisers to be “Top Dog” for AIDS Walk Arizona. Nowadays, he’s retired and loves to spend a Sunday watching a football game on TV with Rebecca when she isn’t too busy. She keeps her plate full as an independent Technology and Community consultant and very involved with issues affecting the Phoenix LGBTQ community. November 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 77

Blayde Loving with Red Destined to be soulmates! Now 2-years-old, Red, a Malinois mix, was a foundling, orphaned in the desert when he was 10-weeks-old. When the boys met, they had an instant connection; “We both knew he was meant to be with me,” remembers Blayde. “We’re two peas in a pod. He’s an anxious boy, but loves affection and watching movies right along with me. He’s oddly obsessed with Shania Twain and Beyoncé. He loves chicken and modeling for photos.” (Sometimes we project our own personalities onto our pet friends, right?) 78

Aaron Jones & Stephen Gormley with Niall Shy and timid, this lonesome puppy was sad and blue when he was abandoned in San Antonio, Texas. Aaron and Stephen remember, “When we adopted him from the shelter we were told that we should pick another dog because of his issues. Rescue parents know that often the dog picks you, not the other way around. ‘Niall’ is an old Irish name that means ‘Champion.’ Now 4 years old, he’s proven it’s true by overcoming everything he’s been through.” November 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 79

Deon Brown with Buttercup “I’m called little Buttercup, sweet little Buttercup ...” This saucy little Maltese-mix is the namesake of the heroine in Gilbert & Sullivan’s operetta, H.M.S. Pinafore. She was in foster care when Deon adopted her just this past August after he lost his darling Westie, Mabel Pie, in April. Buttercup helped heal his heart. The pair are a frequent visitors at Indian School Park. Buttercup is a great playmate—so is Deon. Incidentally, he’s single, if you’d like to plan a playdate with the two. It’s a package deal. Hint, hint. Deon’s been the editor, reporter, typist, chief cook and bottle washer at ION Arizona for over a decade. He’s grateful to Karey Gottschall-Stevenson for her foster care and Steve Bader for uniting them. “I think it’s true love,” Deon said. 84

verybody’s favorite “Fighter,” Christina Aguilera (A) brought her wild vibrato, vocal pyrotechnics and yarn ponytail to the Comerica Theatre to an audience filled with gay men. You can imagine my surprise when I spied one of my favorite blue movie stars (and one time American Idol hopeful) Kirk Cummings (B) on the Jumbotron. (C) Kirk looked so ... so ... different with all his clothes on! Well, for starters, that is. And just standing there, like a real person! Not having sex. Not even with himself! Weird!

RuPaul’s Drag Race alumnae, Tucson’s own Tempest DuJour is the hottest ticket in town when she brings her popular “Retro Game Show” to downtown’s Valley Bar. Her dreamy producer, David 94

Rainbows Festival was a crowd-pleaser. RipplePHX co-founder Jeremy Bright (E) got all Jessica Fletcher with the organization’s “Let’s Solve the Mystery!” campaign about HIV/ AIDS awareness and testing. (For those of you who don’t know, “Jessica Fletcher” is the name of the fictional writer in the awful 1984-96 TV detective series, Murder She Wrote played the terrible actress, Angela Lansbury. (F) This is a metaphor I’ve used linking the two ideas of “mystery” together, FYI. Get it?) Incidentally, Jeremy looks nothing like Angela Lansbury, (Thank God!) but he does give excellent hugs. Visit RipplePHX. org and find out more about HIV/AIDS prevention.

top dollar for a date with the lovable Cozi Phifer. (I) We can only imagine what happened—or most likely, didn’t happen. (You see, readers, that’s funny because Stacey is gay, and Cozi is straight. Get it? Do I have to explain everything?)

Totes fo’ sho’! That’s scrummy little Blaise Caudill, (G) alright, luring folks into the HRC booth with a minitote bag (and his boyish charm, natch!), encouraging them to join the rank and file. Blaise doesn’t have to do much to encourage me to do just about anything. (And I do mean anything!)

AIDS Walk Arizona saw everyone being extra Good Samaritans. KJ Philp and Cruisin’ 7th’s showgirl Nikki Knowles with puggley-wuggley Koa joined walkers Koa. (J) They joined Richard Stevens (K) for the final walk with “Barbra Seville’s Wonderful 100.”

I love the java jive and it loves me! Jake’s back in action. He traded in his g-strings for a Keurig because he’s a jivin’ coffee roasting expert with his own company, Java Jakes now! And now, by popular demand, presenting a semiregular news bulletin I call ... “Keeping up with the Davenports” Because inquiring minds want to know, the City’s Most Delicious Couple was spotted perambulating through the downtown’s corridors for the walk-a-thon. Clayton Sherf was sporting a particularly yummy shade of citrus-y orange nail polish I call “Mangerine” while Christopher D. showed off his new noseneighbor. (L) HOT! Those Davenports! What’ll they do next?

upiter enters Sagittarius, firing the flames of opportunity, especially for winning politicians on Election Day. Not so much for the losers. A boost of creativity help you excel at work and in your personal life; consider switching up Thanksgiving for something unexpected, like a picnic instead of a sit-down dinner. Prophetic dreams manifest everything into existence, so make sure you don’t have indigestion at bedtime. Harmony in relationships helps you get long with those obnoxious cousins. November 23 makes the Full Beaver Moon a hit, especially for you ladies. Wink, wink.

ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr. 20 Relationship snags are unravelled and this helps your knitting. That’s a metaphor. Expect less aggravation from others. Have an extra helping of cranberry sauce. TAURUS April. 21 - May 20 Don’t try to be in everywhere at the same time. You’ll only exhaust yourself and when you’re exhausted you get cranky. Buy some new shoes because travel is in the cards. Extra gravy helps everything. GEMINI May 21 - June 21 It’s a good time to pursue self-discovery tactics. You’ll learn things about yourself that may surprise you, A photo from the past reveals a surprise. You get the drumstick! CANCER June 22 - July 22 Traditionally this is harvest season, but it’s also a good time to plant the seeds for things to come next year. Don’t expect anything to sprout up overnight. It all takes time. Just like the pumpkin pie. LEO July 23 - Aug. 22 You’re noticing a lot of mystical connections. You feel a lot like Stevie Nicks. Get out your tambourine and look into your crystal ball. Don’t have one? Ask a friend for advice. Try the Green Bean Casserole. It’s divine. 98

WWW.IONAZ.COM November 2018

VIRGO Aug. 23 - Sep. 22 You have a habit of overextending yourself. You find yourself pulled in many directions. You say, “Yes” to everything. It’s okay to say, “No.” Unless it’s mom’s Dream Whip Fruit Ambrosia. You can’t say, “No” to that. LIBRA Sep. 23 - Oct. 22 Desire drives you to reach out for more love, more money, more adventure, more harmony, more success and, well, more of everything. Get all you can before the year ends. Especially more glazed carrots. SCORPIO Oct. 23 - Nov.23 Attention to detail is your strong suit, thanks to Neptune’s OCD qualities. You fix minor errors others make, but don’t point it out; people hate that. You know what else they hate? Your aunt’s veggie Jell-O salad. SAGITTARIUS Nov. 23 - Dec. 23 A little added pressure mounts because the holiday season approaches, but you accomplish everything with aplomb. It’s important to pace yourself. Especially where the mashed potatoes are concerned. CAPRICORN Dec. 23 - Jan. 20 The stars have been moving sluggishly for you, but it’s all changing. Jupiter is gung-ho about a new project you’re working on and you reap the reward. But you know Jupiter hates? Tofurkey. AQUARIUS Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 An opportunity to re-do an assignment that seemed to be a lost cause gives you a chance to shine. Second chances are a blessing. You know what else is wonderful? Seconds on that stuffing. And turkey. PISCES Feb. 20 - Mar. 20 Everything’s popping by the month’s end, although you had to deal with delays and complications along the way, especially where family’s concerned. You know what else is complicated? A cheese soufflé.
