Passion Runs Skin Deep L

ast month we asked our readers to send a photo of their tattoos. We were blown away by all the submissions. I love asking people why the choose their tattoos and their eyes light up. They are passionate and love to explain their meaning. Plus, most people plan to add to their human canvas. Check out some of the amazing tattoos on page 72. Speaking of thin skin, owning a LGBTQ business has been the most challenging and rewarding experience of my life. We face many challenges every day. Some are the nature of owning any business and others are created by man. We are attacked on many fronts including competitors, social media and sometimes even a member of our community. Personally, I am passionate about what we do here and prefer to rise above and move forward. Life’s too short to look back and sink to new lows. As Michelle Obama said (God, I miss them), when they go low, we go high.

Last month the City of Phoenix, along with the help of Phoenix Pride and one•n•ten, took one step toward marking our territory with the addition of two rainbow-striped pedestrian crosswalks. One is located near downtown Phoenix by the Parson’s Center for Health and Wellness, and the other is on 7th Avenue in the Melrose District. Many other cities have embraced their LGBTQ communities and have done similar projects in a show of solidarity and support. And speaking of Melrose … there‘ll be some exciting changes and additions coming soon. Look for more exciting information in the next IONs. Stay tuned! I hope you enjoy this issue as you cuddle up to your air conditioner this month. Have a wonderful, safe and cool August.

New documentary about designer genius opens in theatres.

WWW.IONAZ.COM August 2018

M

y shows are about “ sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll. It’s for the excitement and the goosebumps. I want heart attacks. I want ambulances.” ― Alexander McQueen A personal look at the extraordinary life, career and artistry of designer Alexander McQueen. Through exclusive interviews with his closest friends and family, archives, visuals and music, McQueen is a portrait of an inspired, yet tortured fashion visionary. Born and raised in East London’s working-class neighborhood, nothing in the background of Lee Alexander McQueen hinted at his future. McQueen’s fierce romanticism made him one of the most original and influential artists of his time. Filmmakers Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui capture McQueen’s life and work in their new documentary. Intimate one-onone interviews with family, friends and colleagues, footage from runway shows and previously lost video of McQueen reveal an unmatched talent expressing his darkest fantasies and greatest ambitions through his revolutionary design and spectacular showings.

“We wanted to speak with all of the people in his life who were intimately connected with his creativity,” says Bonhôte. “He was an obsessive genius running on raw energy and instinct. There was something not quite civilized about him.” McQueen created fantastically realized new worlds that riveted audiences. He sent models strutting down the runway with live wolves on leashes, used armour and masks to obscure the faces of some of the most beautiful women in the world. He drenched his runway in rain or blanketed it with snow, experimented with nudity, and dropped his trousers as a finale, saying, “You’ve got to put your pubic hair in Anna Wintour’s face.” Before long the world’s top models were clamoring to be included in his over-thetop productions. Kate Moss takes the runway in hologram form and Naomi Campbell struts down the catwalk wearing golden ram’s horns. During one show, the set caught fire and McQueen insisted it be left to burn as the models continued to walk. At 27-years-old, he was named creative director of the fabled house of Givenchy. As much as August 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 31

McQueen loved Paris, it was difficult to fit in. The French fashion media panned McQueen’s first showing and unimpressed by the designer who appeared at the show’s end in baggy pants, boxy short sleeved shirt and running shoes, carrying an open beer. His irreverence, cheek and rebel spirit was lost in Paris. He was abusing drugs and alcohol, and his temper could be uncontrollable. He sold 51 percent of his label to Gucci for an estimated 50 million dollars, but everything had changed; the fun was gone. He had driven away old friends and became an increasingly lonely figure, isolated and trapped in a deep depression. By the time his collection was in stores, Lee McQueen was dead—not in front of an adoring audience, but alone in his home. At the height of his acclaim, the man who collaborated with Tim Burton and Lady Gaga, designed stage costumes for David Bowie and directed videos for Björk, once again shocked the world by ending it all. McQueen’s influence lives on. He had an unparalleled understanding of the craft of making clothes that he could push in any direction. In a 20year career, he created more fashion than most people could in 80 years. “I want to be a wallflower,” he said. “Nondescript. Just not anything. I don’t want to see me.” Alexander McQueen and the world he created with his fashion will never be invisible or forgotten. McQueen opens August 3 exclusively at Harkins Theaters.

“ t’s time to cha-cha! Or rhumba. Or salsa. Or tango. Possibly a paso doble? Maybe even ... the Forbidden Dance ... the lambada!” Get ready for the annual “Dancing for one•n•ten” sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Bud Light. This crowd-pleasing spectacle gives our community’s best and brightest a chance to jitterbug live, and on-stage, in a dazzling competition displaying their talent and skill, determining who can out-foxtrot, grandstand or do a little showboating for a chance to win the audience’s heart. Well, and bragging rights, of course. Best of all, they’re fundraising for one•n•ten, our local agency benefiting LGBTQ youth across the Valley. Eleven sensational couples representing your favorite bars, clubs, restaurants, businesses and valued sponsors team up with a professional dancer for painstaking hours of intensive training courtesy of the talented instructors at Arizona Ballroom Champions while they boogie-woogie their way into your hearts. Each dance team agrees to raise at least $2,000 for one•n•ten by encouraging supporters to vote for them through online donations. Each team is also sponsored and receives support from a great line up of bars and businesses that often host their own “preview fundraisers.” Pool parties, Jell-O shots, drag show turnabouts ... anything goes when it comes to bringin’ in that coin in this thrilling, crowdpleasing event. one•n•ten’s mission is to serve LGBTQ youth and young adults. The nonprofit organization supports youth (con’t.) August 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 37

ages 14-24 by empowering them through social and service programs that promote self-expression, selfacceptance, leadership development and healthy life choices. Hundreds of Valley youth have benefited from their services—including a few of this year’s contestants. “Dancing 4 one•n•ten has always been about the larger community coming together for the youth LGBTQ community,” said Nathan Rhoton, Executive Director (and–ahem– competition winner emeritus). The last few years have seen a dramatic upswing in the fundraising our contestants undertake, along with the businesses they represent. In just the last two years, the contest has raised nearly $150,000 for our youth and our programs, proving dancing can—and is—truly changing and saving lives.” The competition includes a People’s Choice and a Judge’s Award. The dancer with the highest points will be designated the Grand Champion Award. This year’s event theme is Dancing Around the World featuring regionallyinspired dance numbers. Meet the sparkling dancing teams who dedicated their time, energy and talent they’ll be sharing on the stage. Maybe Mike Johnson will please you with a Polka. Perhaps Savannah Stevens will show you that she really can Can-Can. Will Fred Arbona give us a little bit of Mambo Italiano? Scaramouche! Scaramouche! Can Tuesday Mahrle do Fandago? There’s only one way to find out who’ll be the Cha-Cha Champion! This is the glittering event of the year that you won’t want to miss. We guarantee! 38

Dog, Pooh! A.X.L. Disney’s Christopher Robin Starring: Ewan McGregor, voice talent: Jim Cummings, Brad Garrett, Chris O’Dowd We love to re-imagine the lives of children’s literature’s most beloved characters off screen. Spielberg guessed about whatever happened to the boy who refused to grow up in Hook, (1991) with Robin Williams starring as the adult Peter Pan. Everyone’s favorite nanny floats back into London 25 years later to visit the Banks brats with the forthcoming Mary Poppins Returns this December, while we get a glimpse of Aladdin’s blue buddy’s genesis in Genies coming in 2019. In this live action/animated vehicle, Christopher Robin (McGregor, Moulin Rouge) is all grown up and a boring, working-class family man. Problem is, he’s lost his treasured imagination. Before long, his beloved, plush, stuffed animal pals from his childhood back in the Hundred Acre Wood get wind of the tragedy and set out to London to help make things right. Opens Friday, August 3

Starring: Alex Neustaedter, Becky G, Alex MacNicoll Miles Hill (Neustaedter, Colony on the USA Network) is your ordinary, sci-fi, futuristic boy next door motocrosser. He meets an advanced, robotic dog created by military technology who he names A.X.L. (Attack, Exploration, Logistics) in a deserted junkyard, part of an experiment gone terribly wrong. Miles activates the castoff pooch’s owner pairing technology and before you know it, A.X.L. is Man’s Best Friend. Problems arise when the scientists at Craine Systems who created the mechanical canine decide they want him back. Miles enlists the help of his crush, Sara, (pop star Becky G) to help prevent that from happening. This feature length film was expanded from a 2015 short film, Miles, backed via a Kickstarter campaign. The writer/ director Oliver Daly wanted to make a movie about “blurring the boundaries between humanity and technology.” Hey, who doesn’t love a picture about a boy and his dog? Shea Diamond

Seen It All Diamond caught the ear of celebrity songwriter Justin Tranter (Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Selena Gomez) after he heard an a cappella performance of her original song, an empowering trans anthem “I Am Her” at a Black Trans Lives Matter event. Impressed, Tranter invited her to L.A. to record her debut EP Seen It All. Diamond’s stories of struggle as a trans woman of color form every song. Overwhelmed by the pressures at home, she was a runaway, then a ward of the state in foster care, and was incarcerated in a men’s prison for over a decade after committing armed robbery to get money for reassignment surgery. This is where Diamond found her voice as an artist and penned “I AM HER.” With Tranter’s help, Diamond created a dynamic and moving debut, amalgamating R&B, Southern Rock, Blue and hip-hop. “Keisha Complexion” chronicles a lover of her dark skin, “Good Pressure” about taking a night off from the struggle and missing her “piece of the American Pie” on the EP’s opener. The title tune reflects on Diamond’s long journey to finally being “the girl I always dreamed I was.” Having won the battle, she sings, “Now I’m living the best-case scenario.” Amen, sister. Years & Years

Palo Santo (Deluxe) Years & Years is back with a darker and more overtly queer follow up to their bop-full debut Communion. Written with an A-list of collaborators, like SIA’s go-to Greg Kurstin, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, the electro-pop trio’s sound is refined. Doubling down on the religious and spiritual double-entendres, Palo Santo, (which translates to “holy wood”) opens with “Sanctify,” where frontman Olly Alexander asks his closeted BDSM enthusiast lover to “sanctify [his] body with pain,” sung perfectly with his Timberlake-esque trills. “Preacher,” “Hallelujah” and “Karma” expertly swap out EDM style beats for something bouncier—an update on 80s icons George Michael and Michael Jackson. The Gloved One is most present with “Up in Flames,” a sexy finale to a transcendent sophomore release. Available Now

Queens Gone Wild Edward II (1991) Starring: Tilda Swinton, Steven Waddington, Andrew Tiernan Director, writer, filmmaker, queer activist and impresario Derek Jarman (1945-1994) was an artistic and cinematic force in Great Britain during the 1980s and 90s. A dash of Oscar Wilde and a touch of Larry Kramer only begins to describe him and the scope of his work. Jarman directed the 1989 tour of the Pet Shop Boys. He died from complications of AIDS. “Decadence is the first sign of intelligence.” said Jarman; he had it all. It’s evident in Edward II, now beautifully restored and released on Blu-ray and Jarman’s most lavish and aesthetically rigorous film, recalling the flamboyant, sexually charged films of director Ken Russell, who gave Jarman his break in filmmaking. The drama is radically adapted from the 16th century 1593 play by the premiere Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe, purportedly gay himself, who

had a tendency to highlight homoerotic undertones gleaned from historical texts. Your ear will adjust to the modest adaptation of the Shakespearean language and you’ll be riveted to the fast-paced, soap opera worthy gothic tale of palace intrigue, revenge and political machinations of the 14th century court of King Edward II (Waddinton) of England and his relationship with his lover, Piers Gaveston (Tiernan). Throw in a jealous wife, Isabella, the Queen of France (a young, luminous Swinton) and her evil lover, Lord Mortimer (Nigel Terry), and their attempt to banish the grasping, spoiled Gaveston and exile the weak king, plus twisted family relationships for added drama. Weary is the head that wears the crown, that’s for sure. Expect a treat from the timeless Annie Lennox who performs the Cole Porter standard, “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye” when the lovers are separated. This highly stylized, award-winning film paints a nostalgic, Post Modern aesthetic, bizarre, erotic imagery, often very sexual, the brilliant Jarman paints a picture about power and corruption. Some things never change through the centuries. Available now. Blu-ray $39.95, DVD $29.95 August 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 55

espite the Teutonic name, don’t expect the Captain Georg von Trapp, Maria or all those Sound of Music kids to be inside this “haus.” No schnitzel. No wursts. No frankfurters. No pretzels. Nein, liebchin! Odd, because barbeque is something that’s uniquely American; but the philosophy behind the name is once you’re inside their ‘haus,’ you’ll be “trapped.” Once you’re in, you can expect some darn good vittles, y’all. And nothin’ says “summer” quite like barbecue. Barbecue can be controversial. Purists will argue about Memphis, Texas, Kansas City, Carolina, Alabama, or Piedmont styles of barbecue. It’s confusing—like algebra. We’re not into the technicalities here. What we are into is taste. Early this past March, the Trapp Haus BBQ opened their doors in the super trendy hipster ‘hood on Roosevelt Street. How did the little bit of Dixie’s kitchen delights end up here? Surprisingly, owner “Phil the Grill” Johnson isn’t a Southerner— he’s from the Bronx. He barbecues competitively. And he often wins. Depending on the meat, he uses cherry, maple, hickory or pecan pellets in his smoker, right on the premises. He seasons the meats with cumin and sazon, a Spanish spice blend, that’ll perk up your palate. Here’s a few of my, ahem,

favorite things, to coin a phrase. Appetizers? The Brisket Mac Roll looks like two big eggrolls, with smoked brisket folded into smoked mac & cheese, rolled and deep fried, served with dipping sauce for $8 left us unimpressed, with pasta that was just too overdone. But we’re dying go back to try the Brisket Empanadas. In the mood for a “Sammitch”? They’ve got five. Try the New York Hot Pastrami Reuben with a thick slab of pastrami, cole slaw and Russian Dressing on toasted marble rye with chips for $11. The secret? Their pastrami. They take uncooked brisket they’ve brined for five days, then it’s ready to be

each of them.

smoked. A real crowd-pleaser, you’ll come back for this one, we promise. If pastrami ain’t your bag they’ve got four other sandwiches, including a Philly Cheese Fix with hickory smoked brisket for $12. The Brat Haus offers six BBQ Platters that’ll fill you up, heck, most offer 1/2 pound of meat. We chose the Apple Smoked Hand-Pulled Pork $11. Tender, juicy, an succulent. Other viands include chicken, brisket, pastrami and hot links. Don’t forget the Apple Smoked St. Louis Ribs $14. Thick, robust, with fork-tender meat. Can’t decide? Want some more? How about the Two Meat Choice with 1/2 pound of meat ... but wait, there’s more ... a yummy 1/4 piece of smoked chicken! All for $16. You can keep on adding more, like hot links for $4 each or a half-pound of ribs for $9, but you better be hungry! Every table is equipped with three styles of sauce to douse your meats, if you like, ranging from sweet to hot ‘n’ spicy. Try

Platters all come with pickles made in house (sweet, and so crisp they snap), moist, sweet honey jalapeño cornbread, plus choose two sides: waffle fries, PTG baked beans, potato salad, mean greens, honey jalapeño coleslaw, smoked mac & cheese, and honey jalapeño cheddar cornbread. They know their greens—not overcooked, earthy and packed with flavor. The blandish coleslaw could do with a bit more imagination (where were the promised peppers?) and the mac & cheese didn’t impress us. (Don’t worry; all sides are available if you didn’t get any. Small $3. Large $5.) Trapp Haus isn’t fancy. It’s tiny. You order at the counter (and make up your mind quick; don’t dilly-dally, there’s liable to be a line forming with dedicated fans and hungry patrons.) Most take their barbecue to go, but there’s a few tables available (if you get their early.) You might sing, “So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu,” to Trapp Haus with a little sauce stuck on your face. But you’ll climb ev’ry mountain and come back.

Trapp Haus 511 E Roosevelt St, Phoenix, AZ 602-466-5462 Monday: closed Tues - Sat 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday: 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Sunday Soul Brunch: 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. TrappHausBBQ.com

“Yours, Mine, and Ours.” Wedding bells, brides and babies!

Text by: Deon Brown Photos by: Yoko & Todd Photography & Cinema

A

fter the last piece of cake is gone, all the ‘Thank You’ notes have been written, and the wedding gowns are packed away, Amber Cordova and Celine Castillo of Tucson are not only officially “wife and wife,” but this month they’ll be “Mama and Mommy.” Amber and Celine are expecting. Both of them! Amber is due this August 12 and Celine is due on August 15. The newlyweds have been together since they met on Christmas, 2009, and legally married July 7, 2016. The expecting mothers pushed their “big wedding” to this past July 7, 2018, held at El Conquistador in Tucson. Ever since Amber proposed to Celine at Disneyland, they both longed to have a family of their own. But there were complications conceiving. “After two miscarriages we had come to terms that my wife, Celine, could not ever carry or have a baby, as heartbreaking as it was,” said Amber. “I tried through two fertility clinics before and we had no luck. Then we had a friend help as a sperm donor, under the condition to remain anonymous to the children, so we

both decided to double our chances. After 50 thousand dollars, and four years of trying to create a family, we are honored to say we are both pregnant!” Ultimately, the fertilization was accomplished through at-home insemination. “We learned and tracked everything; we just had to get sperm from our donor on our fertile days,” Amber explained. Celine is carrying their baby boy, Josiah, meaning ‘Fire of the Lord & Supported by God.’ Amber is carrying their baby girl, Amaris, meaning ‘Child of the Moon and Promised by God.’ Celine will adopt Amaris, and Amber will adopt Josiah. “They both have the same donor so they will be half-siblings but we are going through the legal process to make sure our family is secure and complete,” said Amber. “We know having kids in a same-sex relationship isn’t easy and has challenges. This is the hardest things we’ve gone through mentally and emotionally, but with a good relationship, faith and an amazing support team of our families and friends, we never gave up,” the August 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 63

ladies believe. “We want to give gay couples and marriages hope that it can happen as long as you don’t give up and have faith.” Sharing pregnancies strengthened the bond between the wives and mothers. “Being pregnant with my wife has been a beautiful journey,” said Celine. “I have someone I can rely on, and understand what I’m going through. Amber is not only my best friend but the type of person that will go above and beyond for anyone. Bringing not only one, but two children into this world, makes me appreciate everything we have been through together and what we have together.” Are more babies on the horizon? “We would love to have a big family and more kids. However, we are going to enjoy the two blessings we have first and see where our path takes us next,” they laughed. Amber is a realtor for Tierra Antigua Realty and Celine is a supervisor for UPS. Their babies might grow up to be astronauts or President of the United States of America. You never know.

he human body becomes a living canvas with tattoos for body modification enthusiasts. For some, they represent a lost love or a new love. For others, they signify a victory or accomplishment. Sometimes they have cultural significance, or identify a landmark of their heritage. Often they’re simply decorative and a piece of walking art. We asked our readers to show-off their tattoos and tell you about them.

“My tattoos are collected from multiple artists. My most recent tattoos—on my neck— are done by Lindsey Dorman. They’re representative of my love of art and oddities. I love collecting tattoos from my friends and co-workers. I’ve been tattooing for seven years and I’m currently an artist at Lady Luck Tattoo & Gallery in Tempe.” August 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 69

“Since I’m not creative or artistic in any way, I express myself through art done by others, on my skin. One of my favorite pieces is the dark space lady on my forearm because she’s the most beautiful.” Primary Artist: Daniel Limon, Lucky Lady Tattoo & Gallery

“I’ve incorporated several important elements into my tattoo art: Lotus flower is about pursuing a spiritual life. Koi, representing courage and triumph over adversity. “I was a Make A Wish kid, so my first tattoo was the word ‘Wish.’ When Lady Gaga toured in 2014 when she called me on stage. (“You! With the blue hair and seashells!”) That’s when I got ARTRAVE. I’ve always loved mermaids and Marilyn Monroe. They’re beautiful and the quote, ‘She is tossed by the waves but does not sink’ is for her. The anchor, octopus, and hakuna matata all represent my battle fighting ulcerative colitis.” Artist: Joshua Gargalione, Lost Dutchman Tattoo

“Being someone with tattoos doesn’t mean you’re a delinquent; for me it’s having a different personality and my own style. Most of the tattoos I have were done in Puerto Rico. I have nine tattoos—you never have enough, you always want more. The most ambitious tattoo that I’m planning will be a tribute to my parents. One day when they are not with me physically, the tattoo will continue to represent them for many years.” August 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 77

“I have a portrait of my late mother, Christina, on my left arm. But I also wanted to include cultural tattoos on my right arm; the female warrior signifies femininity and strength. The cards are from a Spanish game from the 1800s called ‘La Lotería.’ El Borracho reminds me about the long line of generational alcoholism in my family. El Nerd is for me—I’m an aspiring scientist and I love learning.” Artist: Daniel Limon Lucky Lady Tattoo & Gallery

“I chose to get my tattoos once I entered recovery. I suffered from addiction most of my life, and the Snake and Rose tattoos are all about the ultimate temptation, and how I act on it. The skull and sword refers to my mortality, and how I challenge it. Every year I’m sober I get another tattoo.” Artists: Mark Peoples and others at The Golden Rule Tattoo. Pictured right: Reader submitted photos from Elias Villareal Jr., Jennifer Ackerman & Michael Browder.

(following page) “It’s hard to pick one tattoo that I love most, but the one on my back blows my mind. I had no influence on it; Daniel completely thought of it all on his own. The majority of the pieces he’s done he came up with and I don’t see them until the day I go in. I prefer it that way, too. I trust his art, creativity and imagination. There’s never a doubt in my mind that I’m not going to love it. He knows what I like and knows how to add it into his art. It feels like a special gift draw up just for you. I chose a portrait of Lucille Ball because it was really the only show I enjoyed watching as a kid.” Artist: Daniel Limon, Lucky Lady Tattoo & Gallery August 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 81

I

just love getting questions from mothers who randomly come across my column! In honor of all the moms bold enough to write me, this month’s installment of Favorite Bitch® is all about #MommieDearestRealness! Dear Miss Tiger, I found your website in the browser history at work. I have a problem and thought I’d write to you. While attending my daughter’s bridal shower, I got offended at her friend who bought her a dildo. My daughter is 23-yearsold. Why would she and my future son-in-law need one? I wanted to tell that young lady a thing or two, but my daughter would’ve been upset with me for causing a scene. I bit my tongue and kept quiet. What do you think about this? — Mother of the Bride Dear I Think If Your Daughter Doesn’t Want It She Should Re-gift That Shit To You Because, Miss Thing, You Are In Dire Need Of Some Eggplant, NEXT! Dear Miss Tiger, I discovered that my daughter masturbates with zucchini. There is absolutely no delicate way to discuss this with her. I don’t want to embarrass Gina. he old song goes, “There ain’t no cure for the summertime A blues.” Oh, my little sweet, sweaty, sexy, swamp ass-y readers ... they don’t know you very well, do they? Whenever I’m feeling a little down in the dumps, I do a little Facebook Stalking to figure out where you are, B what you’re doing, then off I go! Scottsberg, Arizona ex-pat and insult songstress/ comedian extraordinaire Jackie Beat might call “Hollywood”

home now, but she’s always ready and willing to come back to relive the shame and horror of Life in the Valley (when the price is right.) She traded quips with that foreskinaficionado, bestie and fellow Jewess, Sherry Vine at The Rock for a night of hilarity and humor with “The Battle of the Bitches.” (A) Do you know what I love, readers? I love dogs (but cats, not so much.) I love watching Chaturbate. (I’m waiting to see someone I know.) And I love pastries. Barbra Seville’s Wonderful 100 Bake Sale fundraiser at Stacy’s satisfied one of those loves, at least. Barbra officiated in mufti as Richard Stevens (but with the remains of her eyebrows from the night before still curiously penciled in). Handsome IvánLorenzo played Vanna White and “modeled” a fabulous cake dripping with butter cream icing and chocolate ganache. (B) I have a few croissants, Pepperidge Farms Milanos and Parker House rolls I wouldn’t mind seeing IvánLorenzo model. He could show me his Ritz Bits anytime. (Oh dear! I can’t believe I just typed that!) What’s variable in size, color, and firmness, but is usually elongated and curved, with soft, rich flesh? I know what you’re thinking. And you’re right. A banana. shocking, did you know that botanically they’re a berry? Yummy David Simmons made gourmet, all-natural, organic, gluten free, non pesticide, dolphin safe, free trade, no plantain, 100% pure banana bread ... with his own precious hands! (C) Sometimes I dream of David feeding me his banana bread by hand. In bed. Crumbs be damned! (My apologies to his boyfriend, Jeff Perales. No offense, darling! The stomach wants what the stomach wants.)

E Divine Dusty Brinsmade, Jason Carlton, and Evan Gibbs paused during the sale’s “Brownie Madness” during the “Hour of Flour” for this snapshot. (D)

CEO of Aunt Rita’s Foundation, the clearinghouse for distributing funds from AIDS Walk, Glen Spencer, won a tray of bi-racial Rice Krispy Treats and a two-pound Lemon Pound Cake in a silent auction. (E) See what you people miss when you sit around eating your G soggy salads, being skinny and sad? See? You’re welcome. From the “Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” files (Seriously.) ... D 2601 on Central (conveniently located at 2601 on Central) when RuPaul’s Drag Race competitor and premier Britney Spears impersonator Derrick Barry had the crowds screaming, “Gimme More” at her appearance (F) for “Sultry Saturdays.” But wait! There’s more! Our own local gals, Doja and the loco Coco St. James entertained the troops, too. (G) Audiences were shocked when Ronald McDonald’s bastard lovechild, heir to the hamburger fortune, Rhonda McStinkfinger (H) made a celebrity appearance. (Okay. I lied. That’s the talented Doja after a costume change.) But it made a good story, I think. No?

his is a good time to do some major re-evaluating. Jupiter has you checking out routine and rituals as well as organizing everything from finances to the drawer where you keep your sex toys. Yes, even that one. ¶ You’ll find Venus flirting brightly in the western sky on the 17th; romance rates high. In the morning hours before dawn of the 26th you’ll see Mercury on the eastern urging you to hone your communication skills. ¶ The Perseid Meteor Shower on August 12 & 13 will be one of the most intense, and will help you conquer fear with the power of your mind. Imagine that! ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr. 20 A few calculated risks pay off, but you need to be meticulous and pay attention to detail to make that happen. I said, “Pay attention to detail!” A little extra effort pays off in the romance department. TAURUS April. 21 - May 20 Patience and peace are your hallmarks, but you get fussy when you’re at the end of your rope. You stay grounded and then you can raise a little hell. In public. GEMINI May 21 - June 21 Do something outside your comfort zone (which is weird, because you’re always doing something a little wild.) You question your own beliefs and begin a quest for wisdom and truth. And pizza.

VIRGO Aug. 23 - Sep. 22 Helping others is your trademark, still you ask, “How good is good?” You’re an overachiever, but don’t get too competitive or too fussy. If it’s your birthday you find yourself hitting a target spiritually, romantically or sexually (because you’re kind of a tramp. Not that we have a problem with that.) LIBRA Sep. 23 - Oct. 22 You’re easy to get along with, despite your tendency to argue. A lot. You compromise with a polar opposite on an important issue. How do you sweeten the deal? SCORPIO Oct. 23 - Nov.23 You’ll view a new, unique situation with mixed emotions. Shake yourself. A fresh look will illuminate an old path which you’ve taken before, but with brilliant colors. And it’s not because of mind altering drugs, either. SAGITTARIUS Nov. 23 - Dec. 23 Always look at the big picture. This is a good time for you to sort through details, but don’t get bogged down with them. You’re productive and polish some very specific skills. Why? Because you just never know who might put out. CAPRICORN Dec. 23 - Jan. 20 Feeling ambitious? You’re rarely frivolous (no surprise) and you take things seriously (again, no surprise.) Take something to the next level, or nip it in the bud.

CANCER June 22 - July 22 Join forces with someone you can trust. Even the advice of someone you always thought was an idiot will come in helpful. (Who knew?) You embark on an unusual project. Like, almost freaky. Good luck!

AQUARIUS Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 Everyone wants your attention. You love that, but think about what you really want to project, because we all know you can’t resist the spotlight. Even if you have to make things up to work to your advantage. You’re kind of a fame whore that way. That’s what keeps your audience coming back.

LEO July 23 - Aug. 22 Get out of the house! Your social circle grows, but so does the opportunity for conflict. Just walk away. It’s really not worth it. Birthday lions can expect to be rewarded. Expect a victory you’ve been waiting for.

PISCES Feb. 20 - Mar. 20 Projects you started in the beginning of the year start to pay off. It’s about time. Make a few adjustments. Don’t be too impulsive. Remember to think before you say something stupid. (We all do it.)
