First Survive. Then Thrive. Who’s Next?
We are all living in uncharted waters today. We face unprecedented challenges at home and abroad. It’s up to us to stand up and make our voices heard.
ION JUST JACK
Phoenix Pride is reorganizing to get back to its roots on October 11. Tucson Pride is no more. Thirty-two LGBTQ+ bars are now 13. Thirteen LGBTQ+ magazines are now one. Due to the current economy, ION Arizona was forced to lay off employees and contractors and relocate our offices to Buckeye. Enough is enough. Things have to change if we are going to survive. A lot has changed since our humble beginnings in 2001. The Phoenix Pride Festival was a one-day, one-stage event featuring local entertainment, 100 vendors and plenty of food. Believe it or not, they didn’t even have a dance floor or VIP experience. Pride Weekend is October 11, complete with parties all weekend long, a downtown Pride parade and the festival, now at Arizona Center. While most of us are proud to be out, there are still things happening that make us less proud. There are still people who don’t accept or support us. Please support our advertisers, our Pride festivals, and our LGBTQ+ businesses and organizations. If we work together and do the right thing, we can emerge stronger and more powerful. Who’s next? We’re in this together. We will survive. Then we will thrive. Vote now or on November 3. Jack Tesorero Survivor 8

Charlie’s Phoenix Goes Full Monster Mode Halloween takes over the Melrose District with two weeks of costumes, chaos, cash prizes, and a massive Día de los Muertos finale.
If there is one place in Phoenix that understands Halloween is not
a single night but an entire season, it is Charlie’s Phoenix. This October, the Melrose District landmark is stretching spooky season across more than two weeks of themed parties, costume contests, drink specials, drag, dancing, underwear, vampires, witches, karaoke, live entertainment, and just enough questionable decision-making to make your group chat interesting through Thanksgiving. It all builds toward a huge three-day finale featuring an expanded patio, Halloween night festivities, and a colorful Día de los Muertos celebration on November 1. Consider this your official invitation to cancel your quiet October plans, assemble the chosen family, and report to 727 W. Camelback Rd. Ready to get weird? OCT 2026

The haunting begins Friday, October 16, with The Fire Ball at 9 PM. Demons get their first chance at Halloween glory with prizes for the best infernal looks, while everyone else can summon a little liquid courage with $4 Fireball, Coronas, and Blue Margaritas from 8 PM to midnight. The following night, October 17, the dance floor rises from the dead for Undead Disco. Zombies, vampires, mummies, and other creatures that refuse to stay buried are encouraged to dress accordingly, with prizes awaiting the best undead costume. Charlie’s wastes absolutely no time turning up the cheek factor. HalloWeenie arrives Monday, October 19, with an underwear party where men in their skivvies score $2 You-Call-It drinks from 8 PM–2 AM. The evening also includes a Build-A-Brief underwear decorating contest, because apparently your Hanes needed an arts-and-crafts era. On Thursday, October 22, Moxxii’s Monster MadHauz takes over with 2-for-1 drinks all day and night, followed Friday by Toon Town Terror, where animated icons, cartoon villains, childhood favorites, and whatever deeply cursed character you can dream up compete for costume prizes. Then comes BLOODRAVE on Saturday, October 24. The underground vampire rave begins at 9 PM and includes a BloodSplatter Booth, allowing guests to voluntarily leave looking like they just wandered off the set of a very gay horror movie. Sunday’s Witches Ball keeps the cauldron bubbling with prizes for the best witch costumes alongside Sunday Funday drink specials. Things get even more shameless on Monday, October 26. Men in underwear once again receive $2 You-Call-It drinks from 8 PM–2 AM, but the real masterpiece begins at 9 PM with Charlie’s “Pumpkin” Painting Contest. Bring a friend, wear a thong, and paint each other’s “pumpkins”, and yes darling, those pumpkins are exactly where you think they are. Prizes await the finest works of cheeky expressionism. Tuesday brings a double feature with Hallowingo from 7–9 PM followed by Scary-Oke karaoke from 9 PM until close. Add 2-for1 drinks all day and night and $1 Charlie’s Tacos from 7–10 PM, and suddenly Tuesday has no business being this much fun. On Thursday, October 29, Drag Me to Charlie’s encourages everyone to unleash their inner queen, king, creature, or glamour ghoul, with prizes for the best drag costumes and another full day of 2-for-1 drinks. 26

But save some energy, because the final weekend is where Charlie’s really lets the monsters loose. On Friday, October 30, the club unveils its massive patio expansion and welcomes MJ The Illusion for a Michael Jackson tribute at 9 PM. Charlie’s House Queens and special guests join the Halloween spectacular, while costume contests put a devilishly appropriate $666 in cash prizes on the line. This is the warm-up, babes. Halloween Saturday, October 31, starts before sunset with the Monster Mash Bag Bash Cornhole Tournament. Registration opens at 11 AM, bags fly at noon, and costumes, live DJs, and entertainment keep the daytime party rolling. When darkness falls, Charlie’s transforms for its full Halloween blowout beginning at 9 PM, complete with entertainment, food, vendors, the expanded patio, and another $666 in cash costume prizes. Whether you arrive as something terrifying, sexy, ridiculous, or all three, this is the night to commit. And then, rather than letting Halloween disappear with the sunrise, Charlie’s closes the celebration with something especially meaningful. On Sunday, November 1, the expanded patio becomes the setting for a vibrant Día de los Muertos Party, honoring the tradition with 28

community, music, costumes, and remembrance. Banda La Llegadora performs from 6–8 PM, while guests are invited to showcase their finest Día de los Muertos-inspired looks for a costume contest featuring cash prizes. Halloween may technically last one night, but Charlie’s clearly did not get that memo. From demons and disco zombies to painted pumpkins, drag monsters, $666 costume prizes, and a Día de los Muertos finale, October at Charlie’s is less a party schedule and more a beautifully unhinged seasonal residency. Come for one night or attempt the whole marathon. Either way, Phoenix, the monsters are waiting.

The Dippers: Artisan raincoast crisps, dark sesame squares, and pretzels
HOW-TO Mix: Beat the cream cheese, sour cream, Worcestershire, spices, and 1 cup of the cheddar jack until perfectly smooth. Shape: Scoop the mixture onto plastic wrap, gather the edges, and twist tightly into a solid ball. Wrap 3 to 4 thick rubber bands vertically around the outside to create “pumpkin” ridges. Chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours. Finish: Remove the bands and plastic wrap. Roll the ball in the remaining 1 cup of cheddar jack until completely coated. Avatar: Seven Havens
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (MUBI – Streaming Oct 2)
ION RECOMMENDATIONS
Summer camp has never looked so deliciously doomed. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is the queer slasher everyone’s been screaming about, blending campfire horror with trans and sapphic representation that actually slays, in more ways than one. And let’s be honest, seeing Gillian Anderson and Hacks star Hannah Einbinder sharing the screen is reason enough to hit play. Grab your popcorn, keep the lights on, and remember: never split up.
Avatar: Seven Havens (Paramount+ – Streaming Oct 9)
The Avatar cycle spins again, and baby, the pressure is on. Fourteen years after Korra stole our bisexual hearts, Seven Havens introduces Pavi, a young earthbender who discovers she’s the new Avatar, except this time, that title inspires more fear than hope. Hunted by humans and spirits alike, Pavi must unravel the mystery of her origins while figuring out whether she’s humanity’s savior or its supposed downfall. It’s giving chosen one, identity crisis, and elemental chaos with a fresh queer legacy behind it.
VisionQuest (Disney+ – Streaming Oct14)
Marvel is serving familiar faces, mysterious tech, and enough futuristic drama to keep us very much seated. VisionQuest brings T’Nia Miller into the MCU as Jocasta, and honestly, that casting alone has our attention locked. She’s joined by Schitt’s Creek fave Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., adding even more queer-adjacent star power to the mix. Details are still deliciously under wraps, but with android intrigue, superhero chaos, and this cast? Consider our calendars cleared. The gays love a complicated robot moment. 42

BARTLETT LAKE BASH: WHERE THE BOYS TAKE OVER THE BEACH T wice a year, a few hundred gay men pack up their tents, campers, boats, coolers and Speedos and head out to Bartlett Lake for one of Phoenix’s most unofficial and most anticipated campouts. Welcome to Bartlett Lake Bash. There’s no official organization behind it, no tickets and no formal schedule. It’s simply something the gay community has been doing twice a year for years: the weekend before the holiday in May and the weekend after the holiday in September. By Thursday, the beach starts filling up. By Friday, we’ve pretty much taken it over. A lot of people arrive early to claim a waterfront spot, setting up tents, campers and awnings right along the shore. And once everyone settles in, the weekend becomes whatever you want it to be. Some camps cook and feed anyone who wanders by. Some have drinks. Others offer Wi-Fi and a place to hang out, like the Connect Lounge. At night, you might find a camp with a DJ, lights and a dance floor. There are always boats out on the water, and plenty of their owners are happy to take guys out for a ride, wakeboarding, swimming or just cruising around the lake.
EXPLORATION
The days are hot, usually in the 90s, but the nights cool down into the 70s, making it perfect camping weather. Bring a tent or camper, an awning, food, drinks and, of course, a Speedo. The May Bash is the big one, drawing roughly 300 guys and turning the beach into a full-on gay campground. September is smaller, usually around 150 to 200 people- there’s more room to breathe, and it’s easier to actually meet people. You can walk past a campsite, stop to say hello, share a drink and suddenly you’ve made a new friend. There’s something about being outside, sitting around a campfire or floating in the lake that makes connecting with people feel a little easier. That’s really what Bartlett Lake Bash is about. There’s no right way to do it. Come for the boats. Come for the dancing. Come to camp. Come to meet people. Come spend a weekend in the sun with a few hundred other gay guys. Or just come out, say hi, share a drink and have some fun in the sun. Bartlett Lake Bash is whatever you make it. 44

MAZZOCCO FOR PHOENIX
Michael Mazzocco, candidate for Phoenix City Council, District 4
You’d be the first LGBTQ+ person of color, and first Indigenous member on Phoenix City Council. What does that mean to you, and what should it mean for D4?
INTRODUCTION
It would mean the world to me. I am proud to bring an urban Indigenous viewpoint to city politics. If we are not at the table, we are on the menu. For too long, LGBTQ+ and Indigenous people have been talked about without a voice on council. Tom Simplot was an LGBTQ+ voice on council, but we have never had an LGBTQ+ person of color there. Phoenix should be a safe space for everyone, and I want to help make that happen. The Melrose District is a hub for LGBTQ+ businesses and nightlife. What will your economic empowerment plan mean for small business owners there? I have done this work for over eight years, mentoring businesses like Phoenix Coqui and Luana’s Coffee and helping LGBTQ+ certified businesses flourish. We need more of it on Melrose, McDowell, and 19th, 27th, and 35th Avenues. Keeping our dollars in locally owned businesses fights unaffordability, homelessness, and sterile big-box sprawl. Your Tenant Bill of Rights covers legal counsel in evictions, rent-hike notice, and just-cause protections. Why does this matter for LGBTQ+ renters? Discrimination rarely announces itself. In Arizona a landlord can end a monthto-month lease with 30 days’ notice and no reason, and that silence is where bias hides. Just-cause rules close that loophole, rent-hike notice stops quiet evictions by price, and a lawyer in eviction court means a queer or trans renter isn’t standing alone. 48

OCT 2026
LGBTQ+ youth are overrepresented among young people experiencing homelessness. How would your coordinated response plan reach them? A coordinated response leaves no one out. I remember worrying that coming out might get me kicked out of my house. For too many young people that fear is reality. Homelessness has many layers, and I want to work through them with my community. After the Tucson shooting, many LGBTQ+ Phoenicians are asking what local government can do. What is your answer? Vincent Anthony Siqueiros and Cameron Davis Capara should be alive today. Our city owes people more than thoughts and prayers. We can track hate crimes and take them seriously, with officers trained to respond with care. We can partner with LGBTQ+ venues on security planning and fund mental health support for a grieving community. And a city that says “you belong here” in its laws tells hate it is not welcome. Extreme heat is a public safety issue. How does your emergency AC repair proposal help older LGBTQ+ neighbors? It helps everyone in D4, especially our elders. No one should have to choose between fixing an air conditioner and buying groceries. Emergency repair help means no one suffers quietly or dies from something that could have been fixed. As Chair of the Human Relations Commission, what have you learned about discrimination in Phoenix that residents might not see? Sometimes the biggest obstacle is the Legislature. We worked to ban conversion therapy and pass a CROWN Act, and both times city lawyers stopped us out of fear that state lawmakers would retaliate. Phoenix can lead, but only if we stop letting the Capitol hold our values hostage. You’ve said you’d be one vote out of nine. Which council colleagues would you look to work with first? Any and all of them. I will work with anyone who helps make District 4 the best it can be. You’ve served on the boards of GLSEN Arizona, the Phoenix Gay Men’s Chorus, and the Equality Chamber. How does that shape how you’d govern? GLSEN taught me that policy is personal. The Chorus taught me that art builds bridges where arguments can’t. Seven years building the Equality Chamber, four as Board President, taught me that equality and economic opportunity go hand in hand. I’ll govern by listening first and building coalitions, because when we unite, we all shine brighter. What would you say to young Phoenicians watching this election? You can lead. You can do anything. Be loud, be fierce, be resilient, and make your voice heard. How can readers get involved or support the campaign? Visit MazzoccoForPhoenix.com to volunteer, canvass, or phone bank. Above all, vote early and all the way down the ballot. Local elections matter! OCT 2026

HOW TO GET YOUR PARTNER TO EXERCISE (WITHOUT DRIVING THEM CRAZY)
S o, you’ve started working out. You’re feeling better, you have more energy, and you’re starting to really enjoy it. Naturally, you’re thinking, I wish my partner would do this with me.
Or maybe you’ve been working out forever and you would LOVE for your partner to finally get into a routine too. Here’s the biggest piece of advice I can give you after years of coaching people at ZacFit: don’t try to force it. Seriously. It almost never works.
MOTIVATION
Arguing about exercise, commenting on their body, comparing your fitness levels, or constantly reminding them that they “should” work out is probably going to do the exact opposite of what you want. Even when it’s coming from a place of love, it can very quickly make exercise feel like criticism. Instead, make it fun. Make it inviting. And most importantly, lead by example. If you’re new to fitness yourself, bring your partner along for the parts you’re actually enjoying. Go 52

for a hike together. Take an evening walk. Try a fun fitness class. Find something active that also gives you an excuse to spend time together. And if you’re already super active, remember that YOUR normal might be someone else’s nightmare. Don’t bring someone who hasn’t worked out in five years to your intermediate CrossFit class and then wonder why they never want to exercise with you again. Meet them where they are. That’s something we really believe in at ZacFit. Fitness can absolutely be challenging, but it should also feel welcoming. Bring them to a community class. Try something new together. Celebrate them for showing up. Let them build confidence at their own pace. Most importantly, remember that this is their fitness journey. You can encourage them. You can invite them. You can support them. And you can show them through your own actions how much better life can feel when you take care of yourself. But you can’t force it. Lead with love, compassion, and a little patience. Make fitness something that brings you closer together, not something you argue about. You might be surprised who eventually starts asking, “So… are we working out today?” Looking for accountability, want to finally enjoy fitness, or just ready to get started? Reach out! I’d love to help you reach your goals. Instagram: @Zac.Fit Text: 480-712-3220 OCT 2026

O
ctober arrives wearing velvet, eyeliner, and just enough mystery to make everyone suspicious. Libra season keeps things flirty, charming, and aesthetically pleasing before Scorpio season turns the lights low and asks what you’re really feeling. Expect romantic tension, social plot twists, spooky-season confidence, and a few truths crawling out of the shadows. The assignment: trust your instincts, enjoy the drama, and please stop calling obvious red flags “interesting energy.”
♈ ARIES
(Mar 21 – Apr 19)
October dares you to slow your roll, Aries. Charm works better than confrontation this month, so trade the battle armor for wit, flirting, and one strategically timed dramatic exit.
♉ TAURUS
(Apr 20 – May 20)
Cozy season has your name all over it, Taurus. October favors comfort, romance, and indulgence, but don’t confuse staying in your lane with refusing every interesting detour.
♊ GEMINI
(May 21 – Jun 20)
ION HOMOSCOPES
Your social calendar is getting haunted, Gemini. October brings invitations, gossip, and unexpected chemistry. Double-check the group chat before sending anything that belongs in your drafts.
♋ CANCER
(Jun 21 – Jul 22)
October has you nesting hard, Cancer, but Scorpio season wants deeper connection. Invite people in, share what’s real, and stop pretending emotional avoidance counts as mysterious behavior.
♌ LEO
(Jul 23 – Aug 22)
You’re treating spooky season like a personal fashion campaign, Leo. Honestly, correct. October rewards creativity and confidence, but remember your friends deserve flattering lighting occasionally too. 56

♍ VIRGO
(Aug 23 – Sept 22)
♎ LIBRA
(Sept 23 – Oct 22)
October disrupts your carefully curated peace, Virgo, and somehow everyone needs something. Prioritize what matters, ignore minor chaos, and resist turning Halloween plans into project management software. Happy birthday, Libra! You’re glowing, charming, and dangerously persuasive. October brings romance and attention, but choose what actually feels good instead of whatever photographs best.
♏ SCORPIO
(Oct 23 – Nov 21)
Your season arrives with maximum intrigue, Scorpio. October amplifies your magnetism, intuition, and dramatic timing. Use your powers responsibly, or at least stop testing people who already passed.
♐ SAGITTARIUS
(Nov 22 – Dec 21)
October makes staying home nearly impossible, Sagittarius. Chase adventure, costumes, and spontaneous plans, but confirm the details first. Not every haunted road trip needs actual survival skills.
♑ CAPRICORN
(Dec 22 – Jan 19)
You’re still handling business while everyone else plays dress-up, Capricorn. October asks for more fun. Delegate something, attend the party, and let one evening accomplish absolutely nothing.
♒ AQUARIUS
(Jan 20 – Feb 18)
October loves your weird little brain, Aquarius. Lean into unconventional ideas, unusual people, and niche obsessions. Just remember being mysterious is different from ignoring every text.
♓ PISCES
(Feb 19 – Mar 20)
Spooky season was basically invented for your imagination, Pisces. October brings romance, intuition, and cinematic moods. Enjoy the fantasy, but don’t assign soulmate status after one candlelit conversation.
