Welcome to Spring in AZ
WIam an eternal optimist, but I’m also a realist—and sometimes those concepts conflict.
hile you wouldn’t know it by our weather, we are entering our spring season. Warmer weather brings out some of our biggest events of the year. We just finished AGRA Rodeo Weekend last month. ION Arizona was there loud and proud with Priscilla Queen of the Desert RV and the ION booth. Thank you to the entire team, including Ron Trusley, Michael Weidmann, Mark Boyd, and all the hardworking employees and volunteers, for a memorable weekend.
ION JUST JACK
We’ve been told all our lives that the holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year. As a kid, it was! No school, tons of delicious food, family, friends and unexpected moments of kindness. Fast forward to our adulthood, we work through the holidays, still enjoy food, see some of our family and friends-- but thanks to instant delivery and shopping on demand, some of the holiday magic of ‘giving’ has lost its spark.
If you’re looking to reignite unique and thoughtful gift-giving, this month our beautiful queen Wilma Carstart from Stacy’s at Melrose showcases some of the hottest gift ideas for the person that has everything. Check it out on page 24.
So will this holiday season be the most wonderful time of the year for you? In these rapidly changing times, sometimes it’s hard to ensure our happiness in the face of the unknown. Financial insecurity, federal budget cuts, global warming — it’s a lot. Are you optimistic about the future?
In last month’s issue, we featured four friends, family, and supporters of our community who have recently passed. Unfortunately, we lost another last month. Michael Bayne was a friend of mine. He was also a new advertiser in ION, promoting his notary business. After being missing for several days, he was found deceased in Mesa. It is with a heavy heart that we share this news. Mesa PD is currently investigating his death. While we don’t know the cause of death, please be smart, safe, and cautious on your adventures throughout Arizona.
While Elton John visited Phoenix last year for his final tour, his legacy lives on with Rocketman, a tribute to Elton John, on April 30th at Celebrity Theatre. Check out the feature on page 26. Get your tickets now at celebritytheatre. com and join ION Arizona at the Lounge before the concert.
Truth be told, I think we live in one of the best places in the country — and I’ve loved watching Arizona grow and flourish. Sure, we have problems, but look around and see what other states are facing right now. Our challenges here in Arizona are minuscule by comparison to some of the insurmountable challenges ahead of other states.
So… as we enter the most capitalistic and chaotic season of the year, how will you celebrate? Will you go out with friends and family? Attend dinner parties and events? Indulge in shopping and gluttony? I definitely know I will.
This month, ION Arizona is sponsoring Aunt Rita’s AIDS Walk in March and Phoenix Pride’s Rainbows Festival in March. Both are great events that raise money and bring the community together. Come out and support your community.
Enjoy this spring issue. Use ION as your guide to all the fun throughout the Valley of the Sun. Please be safe, play safe, get tested, and treat everyone like you would like to be treated.
Thank you for being there for the last 24 holiday seasons, and for supporting our growing community at ION Arizona. My best gift from all of you is that you keep reading, supporting your community, playing safe, getting tested and being good to each other.
Jack M. Tesorero
Happy holidays from all of us at ION Arizona, and to all a good month! I’ll see you in 2026!

The Rocket Man Show crash-lands into Phoenix’s Celebrity Theatre on April 30, turning the historic theater-in-the-round into a glitter-soaked time machine back to Elton John’s 1970s heyday. This isn’t just another tribute night; it’s a full-bodied immersion into the era when rock was young, sequins were mandatory, and stadium anthems were born at the piano. April 30, 2026 7:00 PM Doors Open: 6:00 PM
A young Elton, reborn
At the center of The Rocket Man Show is Scotsman Rus Anderson, Elton John’s official body double for the Farewell Yellow Brick Road world tour promotional campaigns. Personally handpicked by Elton John and David Furnish, Anderson built his career on this tribute, and it was the authenticity of his own production that caught the icon’s eye. Onstage, he doesn’t merely impersonate; he inhabits a young Elton, storming around the piano with a mix of diva bravado and scrappy rock-and-roll athleticism. Every detail is obsessively dialed in, from Anderson’s fierce piano playing to his uncanny vocals that echo the original’s range, warmth, and edge. His wardrobe goes beyond clever copies: many of the boots, glasses, jumpsuits, and glittering jackets he wears were actually worn by Elton John himself, right down to iconic 1970s looks and a Swarovski-studded tuxedo from the mid-1980s. Under the stage lights, those artifacts don’t feel like museum pieces; they feel like living, breathing rock history.
A setlist of pure nostalgia
The Rocket Man Show leans into Elton John’s most beloved hits, crafting a night that oscillates between euphoric sing-alongs and goosebumpquiet ballads. Fans can expect to be swept through an era-spanning songbook that often includes favorites like Tiny Dancer, Your Song, Bennie and the Jets, Rocket Man, Candle in the Wind, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and I’m Still Standing, along with deeper cuts that delight longtime devotees. The performance is fully live—no tracks, no lip-syncing, just a band of crackerjack musicians backing Anderson with the muscular, analog energy that defined classic 1970s rock shows. The result is a dynamic emotional arc: one moment the room is on its feet, clapping and dancing to propulsive rockers; the next, it’s hushed as a single spotlight frames a piano and a familiar ballad unfolds. Anderson’s storytelling between songs—peppered with anecdotes, humor, and nods to Elton’s long, complicated career—keeps the evening feeling intimate, even as it celebrates a larger-than-life legend.
Why it matters now
Celebrity Theatre’s close-up energy
If The Rocket Man Show is engineered for spectacle, Phoenix’s Celebrity Theatre is engineered to amplify it. Opened in 1964 and later renovated, the venue is a true theater-in-the-round, a circular room built around a compact central stage that keeps the action surrounded by fans on all sides. With just 2,650 seats and no patron more than a short distance from the performer, the space offers an intimacy that’s rare for a concert built on arena-sized songs. Even without a rotating platform, the in-the-round design means the show feels immersive from every angle. As Anderson pivots from piano theatrics to strutting across the stage, he can play directly to each section, making the most of the room’s wraparound seating and strong acoustics. The layout makes it feel as though the music is circling the audience, rather than simply projecting at them, turning big, familiar choruses into shared, all-sides sing-alongs.
In an era of holograms, backing tracks, and nostalgia acts that lean heavily on screens, The Rocket Man Show stands out for its commitment to live performance and painstaking authenticity. Anderson’s portrayal has earned praise across the country for capturing not just Elton John’s sound, but his playful, vulnerable, and theatrical spirit. For fans who never caught Elton in his 1970s prime—or for those eager to relive that electricity in a more intimate setting—this show offers the closest thing to stepping back into that era.
When the house lights dim at Celebrity Theatre on April 30 and the first familiar piano chords ring out from the center of the room, the night becomes less about tribute and more about time travel. For a few hours in Phoenix, those timeless songs aren’t just remembered; they’re reborn, loud and alive, under a glittering canopy of sequins, spotlights, and shared nostalgia. With praise from critics, Elton fans and celebrities alike – including Queen’s Adam Lambert who described Rus’ performance as “phenomenal”, and Meghan Trainor who declared ‘you IS Elton!” – The Rocket Man Show has quickly joined the list of hottest and must-see shows in town! It’s one small step for man… one giant leap for Elton John fans.

Why LGBTQ+ Arizonans Are Turning to Self-Defense
Amid rising political hostility and fear, queer and trans people are learning how to protect themselves — and rediscovering confidence, community and control over their bodies.
By Joseph Darius Jaafari
This story has been condensed from its original version on lookoutnews.org, Arizona’s only nonprofit news outlet focused on accountability news for queer and other marginalized communities. Subscribe to their newsletter on their website.
April Gendill never imagined she would learn how to use a gun. For years, she said, she believed firearms should disappear entirely.
That changed after Donald Trump returned to the White House and his administration rolled out policies targeting LGBTQ+ people, particularly transgender Americans. The rapid rollback of protections — alongside escalating rhetoric — left many queer people feeling newly vulnerable in public life.
For Gendill, a visibly transgender woman, everyday routines began to feel tense. More stares. More hesitation. More calculation before leaving home. Relief came unexpectedly through self-defense training.
Across Arizona, LGBTQ+ people are enrolling in martial arts classes, firearms safety groups and self-defense workshops in growing numbers. LOOKOUT spoke with community members who described similar motivations: political anxiety, rising hostility and a belief that personal safety can no longer be taken for granted. But many said the biggest change wasn’t physical protection — it was psychological.
At Rainbow Warriors, a Phoenix-based queer martial arts group, training focuses as much on embodiment as defense. Assistant coach Rae Sombras said many students arrive with complicated relationships to their bodies, shaped by transition, trauma or exclusion from traditional fitness spaces.
“You stop seeing your body as a problem,” Sombras said. “It becomes something you understand.” Participants describe classes as grounding and communal rather than aggressive. Members check in on one another, adapt movements for injuries or neurodivergence, and build trust alongside technique.
Others have turned to firearms education groups like Pink Pistols, which emphasize safety and harm reduction rather than militancy. Tucson member Cayce Kenney said joining helped pull them out of isolation after months of fear and doomscrolling.
“The fear didn’t disappear,” Kenney said. “But it softened.”
Instructors stress that self-defense is ultimately about avoidance and awareness, not confrontation. Phoenix jiu-jitsu instructor John O’Hagan, who runs free classes for marginalized communities, said the goal is simple: reduce helplessness.
“If you can leave safely, that’s the win,” he said.
“But people deserve to know they have options.”
For many participants, training has meant more than preparation for worst-case scenarios. It has restored routines, confidence and connection.
“I’m living again,” Kenney said.
111 Days to Summer: Train Your Body, Train Your Mind
By Rafael, Founder of Rafalogie Fit and Life Coach
rom March 1 to June 20, there are 111 days. That is about 16 weeks. Not a crash transformation. Not a two-week detox. Sixteen real weeks to change how you look, how you feel, and how you show up.
Most people wait until May to panic. But summer bodies are built in spring. More importantly, confidence is built one consistent day at a time.
At Rafalogie Fit, I tell my clients to think in phases. Sixteen weeks gives us space to build something sustainable.
Weeks 1 to 4 are about foundation. We focus on movement patterns, daily steps, sleep, and protein intake. A simple way to calculate your protein is this: take your body weight and aim for about 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. So if you weigh 170 pounds, your ballpark range is roughly 120 to 170 grams per day. It does not have to be perfect. It has to be consistent.
Weeks 5 to 8 are about growth. Progressive strength training. Slight increases in weight. More intentional workouts. You start to feel stronger. You start to see changes.
Weeks 9 to 12 are about refinement. We dial in nutrition. We clean up inconsistencies. Energy improves. Discipline sharpens.
Weeks 13 to 16 are about polish. At this stage, it is not about suffering. It is about
8 Week Program Before & After
execution. Small adjustments. Strong habits. Visible results.
But here is what most fitness plans ignore. Your body follows your identity. If you still see yourself as someone who starts and stops, you will repeat that pattern. So ask yourself now.
Who do I want to be by June 20?
How do I want to feel walking into summer?
What would change if I trusted my discipline?
One hundred eleven days is enough time to build muscle, lose body fat, and reshape your mindset.
At Rafalogie Fit, we combine structured programming with life coaching tools to help you align your habits with your future self.
Ready to start your 16-week transformation? Book your free discovery call at rafalogiefit.com and let’s build your summer with intention.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
Season 2 (Apple TV+)
The titans are titaning again, darling. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters returns with bigger secrets, louder roars, and enough generational trauma to fuel three therapy sessions and a group chat meltdown. As Titan X awakens and the Monsterverse chaos escalates, this season dives deeper into the legacy, lies, and emotional fallout left in Godzilla’s oversized footsteps. It’s part sci-fi spectacle, part family drama, and fully binge-worthy.
ION STREAMING
One Piece
Season 2(Netflix – Sets sail March 10)
Stretchy king Luffy and his chaotic pirate besties are back on the high seas, and the vibes are once again immaculate. One Piece follows the Straw Hat Pirates as they chase the ultimate treasure and main-character energy across a world full of danger, drama, and devil fruit realness. Led by the endlessly lovable Iñaki Godoy, this live-action adventure serves found family, fierce loyalty, and a crew that’s gayer in spirit than half our group chats. Treasure? Yes. Tears? Also yes. Piratecore is officially in.
The Comeback
Season 3 (HBO Max – Premieres March 22)
She’s back, she’s brave, and she’s still that girl. Nearly 20 years later, Lisa Kudrow returns as Valerie Cherish for the third and final season of The Comeback, and yes, we are emotionally unwell already. Expect cringe, camp, and painfully iconic one-liners as Valerie navigates fame, relevance, and the chaos of Hollywood once again. With eight weekly episodes leading to the grand finale in May, this is prestige comedy for the gays who love their humor awkward, self-aware, and deliciously unhinged. “I don’t need to see that!”
CHEF’S JOURNAL:
The Melrose Rebirth
March on the “Curve” is the desert’s grand unveiling. While the rest of the country waits for spring, Melrose is already in full bloom. My backyard nectarine tree is waking up, the mid-century concrete is soaking up the gentle sun, and the air carries that crisp, floral sweetness unique to a Phoenix morning.
In the kitchen, we’re trading winter’s weight for the vibrant “spring awakening.” This month is about the fleeting luxury of the harvest—capturing the golden pop of a zucchini blossom or the sharp crunch of a desert radish before the summer heat settles in.
This Zucchini Blossom & Ricotta Flatbread is my ode to this window of time: bright, architectural, and unapologetically fresh. It’s Melrose on a plate.
Joshua J Preston Chef & Founder
Melrose Modern: Zucchini
Blossom & Ricotta Flatbread
Serves 2–4 | Prep time: 15 mins | Bake time: 10–12 mins
THE INGREDIENTS
The Base: 1 lb high-quality pizza dough (room temperature) or a pre-baked artisan flatbread.
The Cream: 1 cup whole-milk ricotta, zest of 1 Arizona Meyer Lemon and a pinch of sea salt.
The Stars: 6–8 fresh Zucchini Blossoms (stamens removed), 3 Red Radishes (shaved paper-thin), and 2 Green Garlic stalks (white and light green parts only, minced).
The Finish: Queen Creek Olive Mill Extra Virgin Olive Oil, a drizzle of Mesquite Honey, and a handful of edible Pansies or Violas.
THE METHOD
1. Prep the Canvas: Preheat your oven (and a pizza stone if you have one) to 450°F. Stretch your dough into a long, rustic rectangle on a piece of parchment paper.
2. Layer the Flavors: In a small bowl, whip the ricotta with the lemon zest and salt. Spread a thick, even layer over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border. Scatter the minced green garlic over the cheese.
3. Arrange the Art: Lay the zucchini blossoms in a geometric pattern across the ricotta. Tuck the shaved radish slices around them.
4. Bake: Slide the flatbread into the oven. Bake for 10–12 minutes until the crust is golden-brown and the blossoms are slightly wilted and crisp at the edges.
5. The Chef’s Touch: Remove from the oven and immediately drizzle with the olive oil and honey. Top with fresh edible flowers for that signature Melrose pop of color.

ION FABULANCE
March arrives like a dramatic season finale, blending dreamy Pisces emotions with bold Aries chaos. One minute you’re deep in your feelings, the next you’re making impulsive decisions with suspicious confidence. The vibe is reflective but reckless, soft but spicy. Expect emotional clarity, random bursts of motivation, and at least one “who even am I?” moment. Growth is happening, even if it looks like crying, thriving, and reorganizing your life at 2 a.m.
♈ ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 19)
You’re waking up from emotional hibernation and immediately choosing chaos. March boosts confidence, but think before acting. Not every inconvenience is a battle, and not every text needs a dramatic response.
♉ TAURUS (Apr 20 – May 20)
March nudges you out of your comfort zone, which feels illegal. Try small changes, new routines, and maybe saying yes to plans. Growth is cute, even when it interrupts your cozy schedule.
♊ GEMINI (May 21 – Jun 20)
Your brain is buzzing with ideas, gossip, and spontaneous plans. March rewards communication, but maybe pause before oversharing. Not every thought needs an audience, especially in group chats.
♋ CANCER (Jun 21 – Jul 22)
March softens your emotional edges while still keeping you sentimental. Focus on self-care without isolating completely. People love your warmth—just don’t retreat into your shell at the first mood shift.
♌ LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)
You’re craving attention and reinvention this month, Leo. March says glow up internally, not just aesthetically. Confidence is magnetic, but humility will keep your fan club loyal and thriving.
♍ VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
March disrupts your perfect plans in the most annoying way possible. Adaptability is your lesson. Stop overanalyzing every detail and let things unfold without turning it into a full audit.
♎ LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 22)
Relationships take center stage this month, and your charm is working overtime. March encourages balance— romance, friendships, and self-worth. Don’t lose yourself just because the vibes feel aesthetically pleasing.
♏ SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov 21)
You’re reading between every line, as usual. Trust your instincts, but avoid creating drama where silence simply means peace, not hidden betrayal.
♐ SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Restlessness hits hard this month, making routines feel suffocating. March wants adventure, but also responsibility. Explore new ideas, not just escape plans disguised as spontaneous lifestyle changes.
♑ CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
March shifts your focus toward emotional foundations rather than achievements. Slowing down feels unproductive, but it’s necessary. Rest, reflect, and stop measuring your worth solely by productivity metrics.
♒ AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
Your mind is inventive and slightly chaotic this month. March encourages expression, conversation, and bold ideas. Just remember: communication works best when people can actually follow your train of thought.
♓ PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
It’s your season, dreamy icon, and emotions are extra vivid. March heightens intuition and creativity. Enjoy the magic, but stay grounded enough to handle reality and basic responsibilities.
