Exploring Arizona Get

OUT and enjoy all our state has to offer!

Some of the most amazing attributes of Arizona is our sunny, warm weather, our topography, and diverse people. A lot of Arizona can be explored in one day. Of course, you will want to take your time to enjoy this state but whether it’s the Grand Canyon, Bisbee, Flagstaff or even Old Town Scottsdale, this is the month to EXPLORE ARIZONA.

One of my favorite towns to visit is Bisbee. This historic mining town is where time stands still. With a vibrant downtown, great trails, stairs, mine tours and more, it’s the perfect location for a quaint festival and parade. Old hotels, bars, restaurants shopping, RV park and more.

Also that weekend, BJ Events Splash Bash Weekend is back. Multiple pool parties, circuit parties and more all at one convenient location. While Splash Bash started in 2002 as ION Arizona Magazine’s 1st anniversary party, 23 years and 20 Splash Bashes later, the legacy continues June 13-15 at the beautiful Monarch Hotel in Old Town Scottsdale. Get your room and discount tickets today at BJEvents.com. Stay the weekend with us. Don’t miss the wettest, wildest, sexiest weekend of the year! Check out the ads on page 8 and a brief look back at the HIStory of Splash Bash on page 70.

What better way to escape the Phoenix heat than a two hour road trip to Flagstaff Pride, June 23? Venders, entertainment, drag performances, food, and parties throughout the city. Go to FlagstaffPride.org for more information and tickets including VIP.

There’s a lot going on throughout our state this Pride Month. Use ION Arizona as your guide to all the great events, festivals, parties, bars, restaurants and LGBTQ+ friendly businesses and organizations. Stay safe, stay health and play nice.

A Sassy, Sweaty, and Scenic Hiking Guide

Arizona is serving up majestic realness, darling! Whether you’re a desert daddy, a muscle-bound mountain goat, or just here for the ‘Gram, the Grand Canyon State has a hill, valley, stream, river or trail for every queen, cub, and cardio-curious hiker. And June 7th is National Trail Day! From red rocks to rippling creeks, steamy hot springs to Instagram-famous vistas, Arizona is stacked (and we’re not just talking about our cover model). So lace up those boots, pack that trail mix, and don’t forget your SPF – because these hikes are hot in more ways than one.

Here are some of our favorite adventures across this fabulous, fiery furnace of a state to get your heart rate up and keep your rotisserie quality booty poppin’.

I mean, come on now!” The Grand Canyon is vast, powerful, and emotionally stirring – like every gay breakup montage you’ve ever watched. “Call It Love or a Good Time”

Frankie Grande hits a high note with debut album Hotel Rock Bottom

Nobody puts the “boy” in “flamboyant” quite like the fun, flashy, fabulous entertainer and personality, the blondacious Frankie Grande.

In a whirlwind career, it’s not a humble brag to say that celebrity-artist Frankie Grande (yes, let’s get it out of the way, he’s Ariana’s brother), now 42, is one of the hardest working performers in the business of show – gay, straight, bi, queer, or whatever label you choose to use. He competed in (US) plus the UK franchise Big Brother 18: Reindeer Games, Celebrity Big Brother

The stage called and Frankie co-starred in Broadway musicals Mamma Mia! 2010) and Rock of Ages (2014-2015), plus the off-Broadway jukebox musical parody Titanique. He also appeared a guest on RuPaul’s Drag Race, season 15 (2023). Frankie the fashionista is also a host on Live, a web series on Amazon. He has over 450,000 subscribers on YouTube, his Instagram is a favorite for over 2.5 million followers, plus and he has more than 1.5 million fans of his TikTok. Even “Cuchi, cuchi!” entertainer Charo loves his music and often comments on Frankie’s Instagram.

And now, Frankie’s first album, Hotel Rock Bottom, drops June 27 via the legendary dance music recording label Casablanca Records

The “Rhythm of Love” is the debut single, released this past March.

“‘Rhythm of Love’ is just the beginning of a story I’ve been waiting my whole life to tell, and I’m so grateful to share it,” Frankie eagerly shared. Frankie is enthusiastic, dedicating his first album, “For the gays and theys” and anybody else who loves to dance and have a good time.”

Creating Hotel Rock Bottom has been an exciting journey for Frankie: “This album came pouring out of me; every beat, every lyric, and every glitterdrenched tear,” he elaborated. “It’s a journey through the wild nights and the quiet mornings, from blackout club chaos to crystal-clear sobriety, from heartbreak to true love, with one thing constant: the dance floor.” And if there’s one thing Frankie Grande knows about, it’s the dance floor as he proves in his new, fun and sexy music video, “Boys.”

Much of Frankie’s newfound joy came after swallowed a tough dose of reality after he spiraled downward in a bleak tunnel of addiction after after the bombing of his sister Ariana Grande’s concert in Manchester, England, May, 2017. Frankie remembers, “Nobody wanted me around,” because of his addiction issues he related. Ariana sent him to rehab to recover and he now celebrates eight years of sobriety.

Dance music played a big role in Frankie’s recovery. “Whether I was lost or found, celebrating or surviving, I always turned to the music, and my community, to move, to heal, and to feel alive,” Frankie said. “Hotel Rock Bottom is for anyone who’s ever danced through the pain, loved through the mess, or just needed a place to let go and werk it out under the disco ball.” Snap!

Today, with growing complications on the national and world stages, it’s clear that the LGBTQ people are being threatened now more than ever. “Right now our entire community is under attack,” Frankie said. “Dance music has always been the thing that saved me when I felt under attack and right now I want to provide the community with an outlet just to dance and live,” he said.

Frankie believes in lending his voice to help others and those he loves. He is an activist and a board member of GLAAD. “I see you all,” Frankie promises. “Especially the members of my community. Everything I do is for you.” In addition, Frankie is a strong supporter of the Los Angeles LGBT Center and has been involved in events like Rainbowthon, a fundraiser benefiting the Center’s HIV/AIDS-related services. He has participated and pedaled for miles with AIDS/LifeCycle, a bike ride fundraiser, and has raised significant amounts for the Center.

“Wanna have a little fun, wanna fake a little love, wanna leave ‘em when we’re done.”

Frankie’s ear-catching new single, “Boys” promises to be the gay summer anthem. “I’m hoping this unapologetically GAY AF bop gives you joy and strength and becomes the soundtrack to the best Pride season of your life!” is Frankie’s aspiration. Online LGBTQ entertainment news source Gayety critiques the single as, “a celebration of life, resilience, and the powerful connection music has to the human spirit.”

The music video was produced in partnership with MISTR, the largest LGBTQ+ telehealth platform for sexual health, delivering 100% free PrEP and DoxyPEP.

“Hotel Rock Bottom is the most personal thing I’ve ever created,” Frankie concluded.

“It’s a story of sobriety, selflove, and the power of being unapologetically you. If little Frankie could see this, I know he’d be screaming!”

You can stream Hotel Rock Bottom on Apple Music, Amazon music and Spotify beginning June 27.

The sexy music video “Boys” is available now on YouTube.

Throuple

The Romantic Drama Explores the Power of Desire, Chosen Family, Music, and Non-Traditional Love

Throuple is a refreshingly honest film from writer, star, and queer indie musician Michael Doshier. The film follows a lonely gay singer-songwriter as he navigates the messy terrains of modern desire, friendship, and unconventional love. When he unexpectedly becomes romantically entangled with a married couple he’s forced to reevaluate the relationship he desires. All the while he worries that he’s losing his lifelong best friend to her new girlfriend.

Loosely based on Doshier’s own life, Throuple began as a meditation on the evolving nature of love and the complicated areas where friendship and romance blur. The spark for the story ignited when Doshier’s closest friend and longtime creative collaborator, Tristan Carter-Jones – who plays Tristan in the film – entered her first serious relationship. He found himself “third-wheeling” with the couple while also dealing with feelings of jealousy. At the same time Doshier was exploring intimacy with married men in open relationships.

These two experiences converged when he realized: “This is a movie.”

The emotional heart of the film lies in Michael’s dual journeys: romantic and musical. A dreamer struggling to voice his own needs, Michael drifts through life in a state of quiet passivity. It’s only through his evolving connection with Georgie and Connor, a married couple seeking to reignite their spark, that he confronts the patterns holding him back. Meanwhile, his decade-long friendship with Tristan is shifting as her girlfriend, Abby, begins asserting healthy boundaries, creating an emotional triangle just as complex as his romantic one. Rather than reducing polyamory to a plot twist or punchline, Throuple explores nonmonogamy as a legitimate, meaningful structure capable of growth, conflict, and deep connection, the universal human need to connect, and the courage it takes to ask for what we truly want. The film inspires viewers to challenge assumptions, speak their truths, and reimagine the possibilities of love, intimacy, and friendship.

Throuple will be available to stream on all major platforms including Amazon, iTunes, InDemand, Google, and Dekkoo beginning June 6.

THE WORLD OF ANNA SUI

Maxxie LaWow: Drag Super-Shero

Lipstick & Wigs Save the Day!

Maxxie LaWow: Drag Super-Shero is the world’s first animated feature film centered on a drag queen superhero, created and directed by Anthony Hand. This dazzling fusion of drag culture, high-energy music, and superhero fantasy follows Simon, a shy barista who discovers a magical wig that transforms him into the fierce and fabulous Maxxie LaWow. As Maxxie, Simon must embrace his power, protect his community, and take on the villainous Dyna Bolical, a drag queen scientist determined to reclaim her family’s fortune.

Beneath the wigs and shade, the film delivers a heartfelt message about self-acceptance and the power of chosen family.

Hand, after realizing the lack of LGBTQ+ superheroes in mainstream media, decided to take action. Moved by the personal stories of drag performers on Drag Race, he set out to merge drag artistry with animated storytelling, creating a vibrant, laugh-out-loud adventure infused with heart and music.

Voicing many of the film’s colorful characters are some of today’s most celebrated drag personalities from RuPaul’s Drag Race, including Jinkx Monsoon, BenDeLaCrème, Monét X Change, and Rosé. Newcomer Grant Hodges voices Simon and Maxxie La Wow and Broadway and television actor Terren Wooten Clarke lends his voice to the film’s formidable villain, Dyna Bolical.

Music is central to Maxxie LaWow: Drag Super-Shero. Grammy-nominated vocalist Angie Fisher delivers powerhouse performances on songs like “Bye Girl Bye,” and “Shero,” a high-energy opening number celebrating individuality.

As the first animated feature spotlighting a drag queen superhero, Maxxie LaWow: Drag Super-Shero represents a landmark in LGBTQ+ storytelling. “In a time when LGBTQ+ voices are being challenged, we need stories that celebrate our resilience, our joy, and our magic,” says Hand. “Simon’s journey is about learning to believe in yourself,” he adds. “His transformation into Maxxie represents that moment we all experience—when we stop waiting for permission and start embracing the powerful person we truly are.”

Maxxie LaWow: Drag Super-Shero will release to TVOD platforms Amazon, iTunes, Google, indemand, Dish, DirectV and VUDU on Tuesday, June 17.

HISTORY

TION SPLASH BASH

his year, Splash Bash Weekend returns bigger and better than ever. While Splash started as an annual anniversary of ION Arizona Magazine, it has grown beyond our wildest dreams. The event has been one day, two day, seven different hotels, a waterpark, Tucson, many different sponsors and countless national and international talents. This is just a brief history of Splash Bash:

First Splash Bash

The first Splash Bash was May 2001 as a launch party for the new ION Arizona Magazine which premiered July 1st, 2001. It was hosted at the publisher Jack Tesorero’s new pool in Central Phoenix. Only close friends were invited to share their opinions of the prototype/mock-up of the first ION Arizona Magazine.

Splash Bash 1

ION Arizona celebrated it’s one year anniversary in July 2002 and moved to what was then called Sunshine Inn on 2nd Ave. and Osborn. We hired local DJ Jeremy as the headliner. More Splash Bashes were held at this location than any other but went through four name changes: Sunshine, Radisson, Wyndham Garden Inn and finally Phoenix Garden Inn. The hotel is now closed for renovation and has a new owner.

Splash Bash 2

ION Arizona celebrated it’s 2nd anniversary July 2003 again at Sunshine Inn. We had Masterbeat DJ Bret Henrickson as the headliner.

Splash Bash 3

Our biggest Splash Bash ever as tickets where only $10 and we brought international recording artist

Amber for a 45 minute full concert. Over 1000 attendees and 100 rooms sold. Outgoing Tempe Mayor Neil Guiliano make his final proclamation making that day “Amber Day.”

Splash Bash 4

We moved Splash Bash for the first time to the Clarendon Hotel with headliner Abigal for a live performance. We sold out 100 rooms.

Splash Bash 5

A new location, Hilton Garden Inn in Central Phoenix brought in International recording artist Kim English hosted Pistol Pete Kelly from Energy Radio with DJ Phil B.

Labor Day / Memorial Day

For the next several years, Splash was so successful we expanded it to a full weekend created two a year: One during Memorial Day in May and another Labor Day weekend. These

moved between Radisson and Clarendon Hotel. One year we even hosted Splash Bash Girls Gone Wild for the ladies and they were WILD!

Splash Bash Tucson

Riding on the success of Phoenix Splash Bash, the Tucson Gay Chamber of Commerce wanted to have their own so we brought our entourage to Tucson at the Double Tree hotel called Splash Bash Oasisl. It was a success yet smaller than Phoenix parties.

Splash Bash

2009-2011

During the housing crises of 2009, we moved Splash Bash to April for the Official Phoenix Pride kick-off party on Friday back at the original location, now called Wyndam Garden.

Splash Bash X Waterpark

For the first time, we hosted Splash Bash at a waterpark in north Phoenix called Wet ’n Wild. We reserved a part of the entire park for the day party and took over the waterpark for the night. It was co-hosted by ION and 1n10 (one•n•ten). It was their first ever private event and we loved when they told their day guests “Attention guests, the park is now closed for a private party.”

Splash Bash Gay Days

After the successful Gay Days in Orlando and Vegas, a local promoter brought Gay Days to Arizona and named the pool party Splash Bash at the spawling Grand Hotel in Tempe. While the event was over the top with events for women and men, day and night, themed parties and more, the high price drove people away. A scaled down Gay Days was created the following year at The Saguaro Hotel (now The Monarch).

Splash Bash 12-14

For these years, we moved it back to the newly renamed Wyndham Garden Inn. These two day summer festivals featured a Saturday pool party and a Sunday event including Sausage Fest (a gay Octoberfest) with fun games and sexy contests.

Splash Bash 15-19

These year’s transformed into a multi event weekend at Hotel 502 (now torn down) and then Embassy Suites on Thomas. These weekends hosted a Saturday pool party and a Sunday Sexiest Bartender (two years) and the third year Matt Moody promoted Hustle Pool Party.

COVID Shut Down

Unfortunately, we had to cancel all Splash Bashes in 2020-2023.

New Splash Bash 2024 Reimagined

While ION Arizona has promoted and run all previous Splash Bashes, it was time to pass the baton. We met with all the new party promoters to offer them this opportunity. It was BJ Events, lead by Bryan Arietta, who took the ball and ran with it.

Splash Bash 20th Anniversary (2024)

The return of Splash Bash was a weekend of two pool parties, two circuit parties at the newly renamed and remodeled Monarch Hotel in Old Town Scottsdale. It was like nothing we have ever produced with dancers, drag queens, fire dancers, light and sound show like never before. While not our biggest, it was one of our best.

ION FABULANCE

Sun’s out. Drama’s definitely “in.” June has officially entered the group chat and it’s giving Pride, Splash Bash poolside hijinx, and unhinged (drunken?) group texts at 2 a.m. Gemini season kicks things off with spicy gossip and unfiltered opinions, then Cancer season rolls in with an emotional hangover while opening up an emotional cycle. Venus phases in with flirty vibes with earthy Taurus, and Mars? Stirring the turd as usual. Jupiter squares with Saturn creating a tug-of-war between delulu optimism and grounding realism. Expect bold moves, questionable choices, and a few romantic “oopsies.” (So take your PrEP or wear a condom. Or both, depending on the rando you pick up.) Whether you’re dancing in the streets or crying in the shower, June is here to serve feelings and fantasies.

ION HOMOSCOPES

ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr. 20

June says “flirt now, apologize later,” and honestly? You’re thriving. Just maybe don’t ghost someone middate. Channel your chaotic energy into something productive - like kissing or karaoke. Your choice.

TAURUS April. 21 - May 20

You’re craving stability, but June is throwing glittery curveballs. Stop resisting. Let loose, wear something impractical, and say yes to plans that sound slightly questionable. Spontaneity looks good on you.

GEMINI May 21 - June 21

Happy birthday, you social butterfly with your customary commitment issues. This is your season to sparkle, spill the tea, and ignore your inbox. Be iconic, but maybe don’t triple-book three dates again.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

Your season starts late this month, and suddenly everyone’s in their feelings and blaming you. Classic. Let ‘em cry and carry on. You’re the emotionally intuitive baddie they all only wish they could be. Own it.

LEO July 23 - Aug. 22

You’re low-key stealing this Pride season before it’s even yours, calm down, diva. The spotlight will come. For now, hype up your friends, hydrate, and maybe keep your thirst traps subtle. Maybe.

VIRGO Aug. 23 - Sep. 22

You’re trying to keep it together, but everyone else is giving hot mess energy. Lower your expectations and accept the chaos. Also, stop organizing the group trip. They’re not listening.

LIBRA Sep. 23 - Oct. 22

Love is in the air, Libra—and so is your indecision. You’re vibing, you’re glowing, you’re romanticizing red flags like they’re cute accessories. Use your charm wisely. And block your ex.

SCORPIO Oct. 23 - Nov.23

You’re giving sexy mystery, as always—but June wants you to be a little more open. Vulnerability is in, babe. Maybe stop testing people and just send the damn text.

SAGITTARIUS Nov. 23 - Dec. 23

Your wanderlust is out of control, and so is your spending. Book the big trip, kiss the stranger on the lips, just don’t forget your rent is due. June is wild— live it up a little (but not too much.)

CAPRICORN Dec. 23 - Jan. 20

Work is calling, but you’re mentally already in a hammock with a drink. This month find balance: you can still be a boss and make it to bottomless Mimosas brunch with your posse.

AQUARIUS Jan. 21 - Feb. 19

You’re in your “revolution but make it sexy” era. Everyone wants your attention, but you’re too busy fixing the world. Just don’t forget to text your bestie back, space cadet.

PISCES Feb. 20 - Mar. 20

June is dreamy and dramatic—just like you. You’re romanticizing your life, your barista, and that person who ghosted you in March. Stay grounded… or at least semi-aware. Float responsibly.
