hen I was a “straight” boy my Christmas holidays in Michigan represented family gatherings, over eating, gift exchanges, cold weather and, most importantly, time off from school for winter vacation. As an adult, my family is 1,400 miles away, I exchange very few gifts, and I work through the holidays. But celebrating the holidays in Arizona is even more fun. Warmer weather, great friend gatherings, plenty of outdoor activities and a growing, powerful, united community with some of the best events, parties and festivals.

This year we were fortunate enough to have the Valley’s very own Mariah Carey a.k.a. Aurelio Sanchez to share our top picks for the best holiday gifts and where to buy them for your friends and family. Check out our top picks for gift giving ideas on page 28.

With this last issue of the year, we prepare for a new year: 2024. I love a new year. New resolutions to improve my life, my friendships and our community. Speaking of helping our community, there’s a new organization here in Phoenix called Gay for Good. The non-profit is in 20 other states and now in Phoenix. This group meets every month to help with a variety charitable causes. Check out the feature on 59. Get involved, make a difference and make the world a better place, starting right here at home.

Gay for Good Lends a Fabulous Helping Hand

Gay for Good was founded in 2009 and currently in 20 major cities. Current Phoenix chapter leaders are co-founder Joshua Barelli, Dawn Brodek and Jason Grant. This enthusiastic gang hosts monthly volunteer events for LGBTQ+ members and our straight allies to come together to work on projects that benefit the community at large.

Looking for a way to help others who need a hand? This is a great way for LGBTQ+ individuals (and our straight allies) to make a difference helping those less fortunate and offer support while forging new relationships.

G4G champions causes including environmental issues, helping the unsheltered and poverty-stricken, promoting health, wellness, education and literacy, and serving the needs of the elder population. Past events include volunteering at the Sojourner Center (SojournerCenter.org which provides a safe haven and resources for adults and families affected by domestic violence), a pot belly pig rescue, and more. G4G also hosts social events and networking opportunities for members to connect with folks who think like you outside of the bar scene, plus building friendships within a supportive community.

Volunteers are diverse in age, gender, race and identities. G4G is committed to diversity and encourages everyone to join events and get involved in their mission. Most events are typically on Saturday mornings and last about three hours. Everyone is welcome!
