Changes in the Hair! What’s Old is New Again

hen I was a kid, many gay men embraced mustaches. Then goatees were the rage. Today full beards and mustaches are making a comeback. The picture above is me at 21 complete with mustache, mullet, cut off jersey and short shorts. It seems most are coming back which I’m excited about. In addition to the evolution of facial hair, our community is experiencing a rebirth. Several LGBTQ+ businesses have changed ownership recently, including Stacy’s @ Melrose, B.S. West, Nu Town Saloon (the oldest gay bar in Phoenix) and The Adult Shoppe’s three locations. The new owners promise to continue their legacies while growing their respected businesses. ION is happy to be part of their new adventures! This issue highlights “Movember” which started as a fundraiser dedicated to bringing awareness to men’s health issues like prostate cancer. Joe Dombrowski 1+1 equals a million laughs with out comic & quipster By Deon Brown

e all wish that we had a “Mr. D.” for our kindergarten teacher. He convinced young minds that he was a mer-man and taught non-existent words in their spelling tests. And they still turned out alright. (So far.) Joe Dombrowski is trading in quizzes for comedy when he comes to the Tempe Improv. ION Arizona gave him a pop quiz. ION: I want you to think out of the box. We’re gonna have a little bit of fun. Joe: Hey, I love that. Done deal! You got me. ION: There’s another Joe Dombrowski out there. He’s an American cyclist … that’s not you. Joe: You want to know the funniest thing? He won the Tour de France. People kept tagging him in these professional pictures and press things, but they were tagging me on accident. So I would comment, “Yeah, it was really hard. I shit my pants around the third loop. Hope you guys didn’t see any of that!” and people would comment back, “We had no idea!” and I’m, like, “Yeah, because I’m not him.” ION: There’s another Joe Dombrowski who’s a pro wrestling content producer. Joe: That’s not me either. And on top of all of this, I went to college with another Joe Dombrowski. Can I just have a little bit of my own essence for once? ION: Can you describe your emotional landscape right now? Joe: Empty! (laughs) Completely empty! I think that’s why I’m a comedian, because I feel like where there’s sadness, there’s truth, and when there’s truth, there’s comedy. I have so much going on in my life right now that’s unbelievable that it’s just producing the best show I think I’ve ever given. So, “Empty with high results” is my answer. ION: You’ve been doing stand-up comedy since you were eight years old and at the third grade talent show. Joe: And even longer if you count the times I threw on my mom’s boa and performed in the basement. ION: What was your set like in the third grade and has it changed? Joe: It’s totally changed. I stole all of my jokes from a magician who was at my first communion after party and then I went on stage and people were like, “Oh my god, you’re so funny! You’re so original! You’re such a joke writer!” and I told them, “I know.” I completely broke our comedic ‘Vow of Solidarity.’ ION: You taught kindergarten for years. If you still taught, what would you do differently? Joe: There’s not enough emphasis on play. Basically, all kids in kindergarten need to know is how to be a functional human being; they come to you completely feral with no social skills whatsoever. The landscape of education right now is so fixated on data and numbers that we’re failing to let kids become social human beings. If I were to teach again there would be much more play so they can learn how to talk to another person politely. Things like that that get you far in life. Not just, “I can add.” ION: What about your own kindergarten experience? What would you do differently? You’re still part kid, I have a hunch. Joe: I’m 100% pure kid. I would definitely change one very specific time when I came to school with a pack of cigarettes. They were my dad’s – I stole them. My teacher asked, “Why do you have those?” and I said, “Because I’m cooler than you.” I would change that because it scarred me and her; I don’t know that either one of us have ever been the same.

ION: Were you often put in timeout in elementary school? Joe: I don’t remember a time that I wasn’t in timeout. To define me as the “class clown” is not an understatement. The best thing that ever happened to me was in third grade; I had a teacher who really understood my outlandish sense of being, and she taught me how to hone it in, and she taught me time and place. Instead of scolding me for being funny and outspoken, she taught me when I can use it to my advantage versus when it’s important to listen. Even today as an adult working professional comic, I understand you have to go out in the world and observe, and then take it back and then write it and put it all on stage. I couldn’t read until probably Fourth Grade. She knew that I was consuming the information, so instead of having to write book reports, she would let me perform my work to the class and show my learning in a different way. That’s not only one of the reasons why I think I became a teacher, but also why I value the arts in schools, I value creative kids. I am super pro young LGBTQ people pursuing the arts, finding their place, being themselves. ION: I have a screenshot of you in a hospital gown during a recent checkup. I suggest more thirst traps. Joe: Oh, my god! (Laughs) That was the only gown that they had and it was just teeny tiny. It was a beautiful floral – for spring … groundbreaking. I could post thirst traps if I wanted to, but I can also confidently tell you that I’m almost at a million followers on Instagram without ever posting a thirst trap. Take it as you will. ION: You’re getting married in June. I was so upset when I learned, “Joe’s engaged!” All of my hopes and dreams were shattered. Joe: Awww, you’ll always have my heart! ION: What is your love language, Joe? Joe: Two things: I need words of affirmation because I have to know exactly where you stand. My other love language is to give gifts. That’s my favorite thing because I’ll hear you say something one time, and I’ll put it in my notes and save it until you think that I forgot that I heard you say that you love these crazy chocolates from Belgium that you haven’t had in 15 years, then I went to Belgium and I got those chocolates and saved them until it was your birthday, and then you opened it and you realize that I love you. That’s me. ION: Tell us, Joe. What is the best Britney Spears song ever? Joe: I’m not much of a Britney gay. I do love her, but I think maybe we should have second guessed the “Free Britney” movement, but that’s just me. But if I had to pick one song that really resonated with my puss, it would be “Toxic.” I’m more of a Whitney Houston gay. I did fight somebody recently who told me that that Whitney Houston was not the greatest singer of all time, to which I said, “Crack is whack.” That’s insane! Okay, no shade, but she tried to tell me that it was Pink. I said, “I think Pink would disagree with you.” 30

ION: I saw that Facebook Reel and contributed my own two cents on that thread; I said, “You’re both wrong. Judy Garland is the best singer of all time.” Joe: Oh, girl, I’ll give that to you. I don’t know about the greatest singer of all time, but the greatest singer of that time. [ION stands behind the reporter’s statement. — Editor. And also he’s the reporter.] ION: Do we see Hollywood on the horizon for you? Joe: I see Hollywood on the horizon. I see a Lamborghini. I see a scarf blowing in the wind … I see it in my future. However, I love the art form of stand-up. If the opportunity with some pictures comes across the way, yeah, for sure I’m going to do it. But I think my heart is on the stage. I see myself on Broadway before I see myself in a movie. Not singing, though. Not singing. ION: Joe, this is my socially conscious question. Joe: Get it, girl. ION: Does your identity as a gay man shape your comedy? Joe: I wish more people would ask me that question! Sometimes you get put in a box for being a quote/unquote “gay comic.” I’ve been in situations where I’m up for something or I’m submitting for something and they’re, like, “Yeah, your content is too much ‘gay.’” And I’m, like, “That’s kinda crazy. My contents actually pure me.” I’m talking about being gay by default because I’m what? I am gay? You have all these straight guys who talk about their families, their lives, their wives, everything that they do, and no one bats an eye. But the second I get up there and tell you that I dated three guys in college at the same time, that’s too much? No, I'm talking about my personal experience. It just happens to be through this lens of gay. I'm not going to change what I do to land certain opportunities. I'm just going to keep doing what I do in the way that I do it because I don't know about you, baby, but it seems to be working. 32

Yeah, I am who I am and when I’m on stage, I’m not making a mockery of my sexuality. I’m talking about the life events that I’ve went through; there’s so much truth in comedy and I know that the more true that I am to myself on stage, the more it resonates with every person, not just gay people. I’m truly livin’ the dream and it’s kind of surreal. ION: What’s the name of your tour? Joe: Just “Joe Dombrowski.” I did want to name it “Joe Dombrowski Does America” but I got a quick veto on that. ION: Tell about your special streaming on YouTube on November 5. Joe: It’s called “Don’t Eat the Crayons” and it’s my first comedy special. I took the best of the best chaotic moments from my 10 years as an elementary school teacher and condensed it. It’s a really great first look at who I am and what I do. I’m out of the classroom now, I don’t have a target on my back anymore, so I am spilling it! ION: Well, I believe in corporal punishment. Do you? Joe: (Gasps, then laughs) Next question, bitch! ION: This is my Barbara Walters question: Joe, if you were a crayon, what color crayon would you be, and why? Joe: Oh, my god! If I was a crayon, I would be yellow sparkles because I love sparkles and yellow is my favorite color. (Laughs) No. I think the truth is I would be one of those jumbo crayons, the kind that you don’t really need to put a lot of effort in to fill the whole page up. And I say that because I’m coming at you. I’m a whole lot of woman! One of those jumbo crayons really, really suits my personality.

This November join ION Arizona as we help to raise awareness and money for a good cause: men’s health issues, especially prostate and testicular cancer, the two most common forms of cancer affecting men. How many of us are committing to really take care of ourselves and the men who we love in our lives? Let’s all talk about it, and get into action. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the United States. Globally more than 1.4 million men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Across the country, there are more than 3.25 million men living with and beyond the disease. Testicular cancer ranks high, too. Sounds scary, but it’s better to know and to be prepared, right? Checking yourself regularly after a warm shower is the simplest form of being proactive. Getting yearly physicals goes a long way, too. “No Shave November” also known as “Movember” looks at men’s health focusing on prevention, and promoting early intervention. The goal is to take action and to be mentally well, and to be supported by those around us. “No-Shave November” strives to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. Donate the money you typically spend on shaving and grooming to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle. The rules of “No-Shave November” are simple: put down your razor for 30 days and donate your monthly hair-maintenance expenses to the cause. The Marvelous Miss Marilyn Maye

he’s the talk of the town, selling out nightclubs, cabarets, and concert halls. The MIM Music Theater at Musical Instrument Museum will host to the Grammy- nominated sensation, Marilyn Maye. Guests are in for a timeless performance from this chanteuse of the jazz and cabaret worlds who headlined a sold-out Carnegie Hall show with the New York Pops. The 95-year-old is a musical treasure has dedicated her entire life to the art of song and performance. Her friend Ella Fitzgerald hailed her as “the greatest white female singer in the world.” The Arts Council of the Smithsonian selected her recording “Too Late Now” for its album of the 110 best American compositions of the 20th century. The New York Times describes her as “still enterprising and still twinkling at nearly 95, the last of a great generation of American Songbook singers.” Her die-hard fans, who range from musical theater fanatics to jazz lovers, sell out her shows everywhere, including the fabled New York City boîte, 54 Below – Broadway’s Supper Club, for 10 performance every year. During COVID with live public performances on hiatus, Miss Maye sang nightly from her front porch for neighbors and fans in Kansas City, Missouri. Comedian and late night talk show host Steve Allen brought her talent to a national audience, leading to a tenure on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” where she appeared an astonishing 76 times – the record for any singer on the show. As Carson once noted, “And that, young singers, is the way it’s done.” “I sing to the people, not for them,” Maye says. She commands the attention of each and every concertgoer through personal connection. “To me, the lyric is conversation,” Maye says. “We don’t talk to each other with our eyes closed.
