Welcome to the Sunshine State!

There is so much going on this month that I’m having a hard time keeping up. Thank God for ION Arizona to keep it all “straight.” Check out all of the events, theatre, concerts, parties, all leading up to the Phoenix Pride Parade and two-day festival. ION will be there giving away swag in and out of the VIP Experience. See our special PRIDE Events feature to see everything “PRIDE” going on. Don’t miss this crazy fun weekend, hang out with friends, meet new ones and have a great time.

y late father never understood why I loved Arizona. He chose to live in Florida which calls itself the Sunshine State. In fact, Florida is actually the 10th sunniest state in the country. Do you know who is number 1? Arizona. With over 300 days of sunshine, a wide range of climates from snow to heat, it’s difficult to get bored in the Grand Canyon State. But there is more to Arizona than sunshine and a canyon. In one day you can visit towns and cities like Flagstaff, Tucson, Sedona, Payson, Prescott, Kingman, Jerome, Pinetop, and yes, the Grand Canyon to name a few. If you don’t love Arizona, you haven’t “Explored Arizona.”

Every year we ask our readers to submit photos of their adventures throughout this great state. Thank you for everyone who did. This year we took our models to Sedona, one of the most unique and beautiful places in the world. Bright red and orange rock formations, blue skies, sunsets and a variety of trees. You wouldn’t believe it unless you’ve seen it for yourself.

Our canyon isn’t the only thing that’s grand

This month I continue my explore Arizona by taking Pricilla Queen of the Desert, the ION RV, to Bartlett Beach Bash, Bisbee Mineshaft Weekend and you’ll see it in the Phoenix Pride Parade. Play safe, get your monkeypox vaccine and “Explore Arizona!”

Directors and producers Bryan Darling and Jesse Finley Reed delved into the archives and history of the International Male phenomenon. Together they created the documentary, “All Man: The International Male: The International Male Story” narrated by Matt Bomer, featuring commentary by pop culture personalities, the magazine’s executives, employees, and models, peppered with vintage TV commercials and clips.

By Deon Brown

ay before stores like Abercrombie & Fitch (back when it was cool) or Armani Exchange existed, menswear was was largely limited to small, conservative haberdasheries and frumpy department store staples with boring suits, bland khaki pants and cardigan sweaters (in case you got wild and crazy on the weekends.) Sears catalog models were sanitized, wooden, and devoid of any sex appeal.

Documentary about really, really, ridiculously good looking men to open Desperado LGBTQ+ Film Festival.

W

Expect a few surprises with interviews with IM models like Madonna’s one time boy-toy Tony Ward who was featured in her book, SEX (1992), as well as Playgirl magazine’s 1986 “Man of the Year” and male supermodel Brian Buzzini, remembering their experience as clothes horses for the catalog.

Eventually, trends in department stores and mall’s men’s shops expanded and men’s fashion got a little bit of flair, offering young men something forward thinking instead of fussy old trousers and tweed jackets.

now, but there was nothing like it. Fashion from (supposedly) around the world with names like the Burma Linen Jacket, Aussie Rower, French Officer ’s Trenchcoat, gave men—especially from small towns across America—a window into a bigger world including fashion with handsome men in exotic locales. It all started with underwear. Lots and lots of racy underwear.

SEPT / OCT 2022 IONMOBILE 23

The International Male Story

“American’s were very slow to catch on to the underwear revolution,” said former Barney’s window dresser and fashionista Simon Doonan. IM changed that. Remember, this was way before Calvin Klein’s tighty-whities caught the public’s eye.

“We never said we were a gay catalog, but gays ‘got it.’” remembered Gene Burkard. “I mean, gays looked at it and said, ‘My God, that’s me, and I can get this in the mail because it’s not saying ‘gay’ anywhere,”

“It was Victoria’s Secret for men,” laughed former International Male model Robert Goold. Of course, gay men ate it up. The quarterly was coveted lust lit for many a gay guy’s spank bank in those pre-internet days. The models exuded self-assurance in those multi-pleated pastel pants. They weren’t just selling a fantasy, but a lifestyle. Men were trying something new. International Male’s hip, innocently subtle “homo-lite” catalog found its way into four million mailboxes in all 50 states and in 22 countries around the world.

Brian Buzzini

All Man: The International Male Story opens the Desperado LGBTQ+ Film Festival. The documentary is introduced by former IM employee, Phoenix’s own Deon Brown, editor of ION Arizona, who also appears in the film.

Jesse Finley Reed discussed why the documentary was made. “International Male, often written off as camp or parodied, is a fantastic means to explore masculinity in America, and all the limitations it has historically heaped on the shoulders of individuals. International Male showed us another way to express ourselves, providing this magical window into an alternative world. For gay men, it was an opportunity to see imagined representation in a world where there wasn’t any representation; for other men, it was a chance to express themselves.”

SEPT / OCT 2022 IONMOBILE 25 “International Male’s form of masculinity was confidence,” said Dale Johnson, IM hair InternationalalsosoldthehomophobiacorporateimagepromotionRacisttolovingasisn’tThemakeupandstylist.documentarywhat’sknowna“valentine”—a“puffpiece”fondmemory.casting,ofbodyinsecurities,aftercompanywasareaddressed.Male’s

impact was so legendary that it was referenced in the 2001 comedy, Zoolander, about the really, really, ridiculously good-looking male supermodel. Everyone got Co-director/co-producerit.

ION: How did you create Fabulance?

Rosendo: His design is based on my friend, Lance, whose nickname actually is “Fabulance.” Years ago, Lance messaged me with his picture in a tight black teeshirt and tight red pants. He asked how he looked, my reply was that he looked like a superhero—and Fabulance was born.

Rosendo: Lance is that one gay friend that we all have. Lovable, loyal and maybe not too bright. His adventures along with his best friend Erik’s are based on real life experiences I’ve had. He’s just a simple guy trying to find his way in the world, unlucky in love and hopelessly naïve about so, so many things.

Rosendo: I love the fans. I recently met a long time fan—and we dated briefly I love coming up with the jokes. It could be the most random thing that happens, and my mind tells me to make it into a strip. I love making people laugh. I try to make someone laugh at least once a day, and Fabulance allows me to do that.

ION: What’s your favorite part about Fabulance?

ust in time for Pride! ION Arizona is glad to welcome the comic adventures of Fabulance to our pages. We interviewed creator and cartoonist Rosendo who told us everything you wanted to know about the wide-eyed “every gay boy” kinda guy and his creator.

Say Hello To Fabulance

Rosendo: Oh gosh, yes. Initially, Lance was a superhero by night called “Fabulance,” but as the strip progressed and the characters grew, that was swept away. The jokes were one dimensional, and I found myself being written into a corner. Once I embraced Lance’s gay life, the strip really took off and gained in popularity. People began identifying with him. Now, he’s more of a lovable buffoon and people can see themselves. I’ve started retconning some of the old supporting cast. Erik has a lesbian sister. was designed as a stereotype, but that doesn’t work in this day and age, and I’m more enlightened now, so she’s getting a makeover along with Lance’s mom and other characters from the old strip.

Rosendo:inside?

ION: Do your own moods and ideas find their way into the strip?

ION: Who is Fabulance?

ION: Aren’t we all just a little bit “Fabulance” deep

J

Rosendo: Constantly. Almost everything you see in the strip happened to me at some point. I was stung by a sting ray and that was turned into a strip. I gave my number to a guy working in a grocery store, and that became a strip. I envision Lance to be a gay role model to gay youth, to let them know that even if you’re gay, you still make mistakes, have adventures, laugh at yourself, and that being gay is okay. I like that message the comic puts out.

(Laughs) We had to end with the doubleentendre, didn’t we?

ION: Has Fabulance grown or changed since you created it?

You’re an “influencer” in your own special world. You’re not a Kardashian, but things you do and say have a ripple effect and make a difference to your audience. Surround yourself with the right people. Find harmony in your life. Don’t wear ugly shoes.

AQUARIUS Jan. 21 - Feb. 19

Are you high or something? Sure! High on optimism! Energy motivates you. Expect a hectic social calendar but try to scale back. Don’t let FOMO make your mind up for you. There will always be another party.

VIRGO Aug. 23 - Sep. 22

You’re busy! Appointments, meetings, activities, parties … but don’t overextend yourself. For your birthday, spend it with people who really love you. Not the phonies and hangers on who just say they do.

Think something’s just a little “off”? Trust your instincts before you make any major decision. Procrastinating? Don’t worry. The New Moon on September 25 helps you get your retrograde cosmic shit together.

Look for a boost of energy. It’s all thanks to Venus. You convene with your peeps and decide to make a positive impact on the world. Pretty lofty ideal, but you make it work.

HOMOSCOPES

he cosmos are going bananas with Mercury at opposition to big, burly Jupiter. Never expect perfection during Mercury retrograde from September 9 through October 2. Take a deep breath, and a few steps backward before steaming ahead. ¶ September 22 is first day of fall has you feeling emotional with the equinox bringing equal hours of light and night. Some of you have been a little hysterical anyway (Listening, Aquarians? Yes. You know it’s you.) By September 25 all of you will be able to forge a new connection with your true self. And who is that? Go look in the mirror. Oh. And brush your hair. Otherwise, you’re perfect!

LEO July 23 - Aug. 22

Usually things are all on the table for you. This month you’re called upon to make some choices. Not just, “Chicken or beef?” Constructive choices make a difference. Be mature. Don’t be a big baby.

Can you say, “My career is taking off!”? Not sure what that career is, but Pluto and Mercury have a contract ready for you to sign, and more moola. So, what is your career, by the way? We’re never quite sure.

Don’t worry so much. Leave well enough alone. Relax. See what’s in front of you? The present! Even if it’s not your birthday. Here’s a gift: give yourself the same love and care you give others. Ain’t that sweet?

This is a perfect time to stretch your creative wings. Breathe art into your daily life. Try to reorient yourself emotionally and romantically, because last month, frankly, you were kind of a mess. Really. Admit it. It’s okay.

PISCES Feb. 20 - Mar. 20

Networking, sales pitches, and all kinds of negotiating surrounds you. Say what you’re thinking. (You usually do, anyway.) Don’t be afraid of your own mighty power. Throw thunderbolts. Scare others. You do that so well.

TAURUS April. 21 - May 20

Cozy up with your besties because their support is crucial since Mercury is making you feel a little paranoid. (Nobody’s after you. Really.)You’re never alone. Everything falls into place.

SAGITTARIUS Nov. 23 - Dec. 23

It’s all about learning something new. You might be, let’s say, “uninformed” about things. So what? Ask questions! Speak out! Don’t let your precious ego get in the way.
