The Youngest One in Curls

I

’m writing this after returning to my roots in Detroit. I got to see family and friends that I left 24 years ago and nothing has changed except my hair. Detroit is a lot like Phoenix. It was devoid of businesses and residents for decades and now everyone wants to be part of the renaissance, the rebirth. We are excited to be a part of the energy and growth in Phoenix.

White men can’t dance!

I wish I could dance. I dance like a wavy, wacky, inflatable tube man. It ain’t pretty. That is why I appreciate people who can dance and who love it. This month we feature Dancing for one•n•ten on Sunday, August 21. Here, some community members pair up with a professional dance instructor and create a routine to help raise money for one n ten. Donate to your favorite dance couple and get your tickets today! It’s a great event for a great cause.

Returns!

O

ne of the most popular, crowd-pleasing events is back after a hiatus thanks to the pandemic. It’s “Dancing for one·n·ten” is back! Several of the Valley’s favorites team up with professional dance instructors to raise dollars for one·n·ten, the non-profit serving the Phoenix metro LGBTQ+ youth and providing them with tools to improve self-esteem and acceptance of who they are. “I’m thrilled about the return of Dancing for one·n·ten!” said Clayton Davenport, Director of Development and Marketing. “This year’s theme is ‘Identity.’ We have nine fantastic contestants whose identities reflect the diversity that creates our community.” Contestant Ben Whitneybell, a.k.a. drag entertainer “Ben Addiction” enthused, “I’m experiencing a lot of emotions. With great excitement also comes big nerves! The universe placed this chance in front of me because I can handle it; this is exactly what I need to do to grow as an individual and as a leader.” Contestant Aaron Carter is ready to go. “Having danced professionally when I was much younger in New York City, this is a full-circle moment. To be able to share my passion to benefit this incredible 30

organization means the world to me. It’s a way for me to give back to the community, to our youth and to inspire. I’m grateful that God was in my life, as He provided me a safe haven and focus. To dance to save a youth—or hopefully many—is a full-circle moment for me.” Past contest winner and now the Chief Executive Officer Nathan Rhoton said, “Dancing for one•n•ten provides funding for critical programs supporting LGBTQ youth and young adults. However, the event is so much more,” Nathan continued. “Through dance we shine a spotlight on our community. Visibility is showcased to the greater community when our own leaders share their talents in a call to all we will not go back in the closet. Our contestants let Arizona see firsthand how important each of us is through their fundraising and dancing. We are so grateful to each and every contestant.

GBTQ films engage and unite audiences by providing a way for the stories of queer characters to exist on film as well as an outlet for expression and understandings of gender and sexuality. It’s liberating to see queer representation in motion pictures. It opens up a safe space and the audience is able to connect through just that one powerful characteristic through stories about queer people being told on film. The Desperado LGBTQ+ Film Festival is dedicated to devoting a weekend screening movies from all over the world about the queer experience. Expand your horizons and spend a weekend watching our stories told by queer filmmakers unfold on screen.

All Man: The International Male Story USA 2022 / Directed and Produced by Bryan Darling and Jesse Finley Reed Entrepreneur Gene Burkard, a small-town dreamer and military veteran with a big idea created the International Male menswear fashion catalog. Reaching its zenith in the 1980s and early 90s, the stylish catalog took boring menswear and elevated it to affordable (admittedly, often flashy. Like, really flashy.) men’s fashion. The sexy mag was especially a staple for gay men across the nation with its hunky, humpy models, changing the way men would look at themselves, at each other, and how the world would look at them. Narrated by Matt Bomer with commentary featuring former IM models and pop culture celebrities, including fashion commentator Simon Doonan, Frank DeCaro, Carson Kressley, and others. This fascinating documentary is the festival’s opening film. Featuring and introduced by former IM employee, Phoenix’s own Deon Brown, editor of ION Arizona. Friday, September 23, 7:30 p.m. with Q&A after 42

Mama Bears USA 2022 / Directed by Daresha Kyi Spread across the country but connected through private Facebook groups, over 30,000 mothers in America—many from conservative, Christian backgrounds—fully accept their LGBTQ+ children. And they call themselves “mama bears” because while their love is warm and fuzzy, they fight ferociously to make the world kinder and safer for all LGBTQ+ people. Mama Bears explores the journeys of two “mama bears” and a young lesbian whose struggle for self-acceptance exemplifies why the Mama Bears movement is vitally important.

Maybe Someday USA 2022 / Written, Directed, and Produced by Michelle Ehlen In the midst of separating from her wife, Jay a non-binary photographer in her 40s battling a mixture of denial and depression, attempts to move across the country to start her life over again. Along the way, she takes a detour to stay with her high school best friend who she was secretly in love with before she came out as a lesbian, and befriends a charismatic but complicated gay man who has long given up on love. Struggling to move forward with the next chapter of her life, memories of the past resurface as Jay grapples with the inevitable cycles of love, loss, and letting go.

In From The Side UK 2022 / Directed & co-written by Matt Carter When an injured player from the A-team is selected to play with the Bs during his recovery, tensions are already high. Suspicion turns to physical lust for two of the team members and personal loyalties are stretched as they try to conceal the affair, not only from their own partners but also their teammates. Hard drinking and macho antics are par for the course amongst the team, but these bulky athletes soon reveal their vulnerabilities. You’ll be drawn into the drama of these young men. Prepare yourself for a muddy, sweat-drenched emotional thrill ride. Oh, and there’s full frontal nudity, too. AUG / SEPT 2022

After the accidental flooding of her apartment, she meets Lucia, a transsexual woman who is her new neighbor. For the first time since the pandemic, the Desperado LGBTQ+ Film Festival will be an in-person event at the Paradise Valley Community College Center for Performing Arts September 23-25, 2022. This is their 14th annual event and ticket sales benefit the college’s LGBTQ+ student scholarships.

Anything’s Possible Everybody loves coming of age rom-coms with precocious teens trying to figure shit out. Billy Porter directs his debut feature film about a trans girl in Pittsburgh who falls for a boy. Yes, there’s a villain. Porter’s lecturing voice, of course, is apparent. Uneven, but likable.

A lot to take in, and it wobbles here and there, but fun nonetheless.

RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race As if the first season weren’t bad enough, money hungry Mama Ru is bringing it back. ION MONKEYPOX

A

s I sit in the parking lot of an LGBTQ+ physician, I think, what is happening? A nurse practicioner walks up and says, “We need to check for COVID and Monkeypox. There have been a few cases that are showing both.” I explained I had COVID in June for the first time and he said it didn’t matter. I knew the sores were Monkeypox. As the leader of an HIV organization, I was both embarassed and ashamed. How could I let this happen? How could I let this happen after I had done interviews about the risk of Monkeypox? But I stepped back and thought, “Okay, Scarlett O’Hara. It is what it is.” I have Monkeypox. It feels like glass is grinding into my skin, my lymph nodes are so swollen they’re choking me on occasion, and I don’t really want to move unless there’s ice cream involved. Basically, it sucks. Fortunately, the death rate for Monkeypox in the United States is 0%. Am I uncomfortable? Absolutely. Beyond uncomfortable. I also accept that if I can deal with Mariah Carey’s Christmas songs for four weeks each year, I can survive two to four weeks of pain and annoyance. Your health is all you have in life. If you feel you might have Monkeypox, report it to your primary care physician or a medical provider you trust. And most importantly, isolate until you are feeling better. Do I trust the chaos that is going on these days? Not necessarily. But I know that I can only do my part by taking care of myself and respecting others.
