Soul singer Mykal Kilgore reclaims his time in Chandler Center for the Arts. S

inger Mykal Kilgore has deep roots on Broadway’s musical stage. He’s been performing across the country, and is a recording artist as well. Mykal’s debut album Just A Man Born Black debuted at #2 on the iTunes R&B charts and on five different Billboard charts. In addition, he’s received a range of nominations: 2021 Grammy nomination for “Best Traditional R&B Performance” for “Let Me Go”; and 2020 SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Awards for “New Artist of the Year,” as

well as nabbing an NAACP Image Award nomination for “Outstanding New Artist” in 2020. Director, writer, cabaret and Broadway artist Timothy Oliver Reed described Mykal Kilgore as “Soaked in honey and steeped in glory!” That’s some pretty lofty lovin’! ION spoke to Mykal about his inspiration, music, and identity as a Black, queer man. ION: We have that pesky pandemic thing. How did you rise above it? Mykal Kilgore: COVID kind of stopped everyone. It’s difficult to complain because we all went through it together. That time was needed, in a weird way. I got through a lot of internal work—some “excavation” of myself. I feel renovated. ION: You were mentored by Billy Porter. MK: He’s always been a humongous deal to me; idolized as well as revered. When I met him I was bowled over that he wanted to be involved in my career. We like to joke that I’m the Barbra Streisand to his Ethel Merman. ION: In the podcast “Audition Stories” you remembered auditioning for Aladdin on Broadway. Despite being shot down you’ve been determined to succeed. You said to yourself, “Girl, you’ve got to get out of this ‘chorus girl’ mentality and act like you run this show.” MK: There’s nothing wrong with being in the chorus, it’s just this mentality, “I’m just a cog.” Stop playing small because it makes other people feel comfortable;

if you’re gonna swing, you better swing hard for a grand slam. ION: You said, “It’s a world of ‘yes,’ and a world of ‘no.’ Sometimes you really know. You have to shake it off, move on and keep living.” MK: We’re all trying to fit somebody’s mold. Once you become comfortable with who you are inside, the Universe conspires for your good. It took me quite a while to be satisfied being me and doing it the way that I do it. This kind of confidence only comes with spending time with yourself and growing up. This was how I was able to sit down and write this album. ION: Billboard described your music as passed down from “the timeless sounds of Blackness that shaped American music.” MK: I believe all American music owes a debt of gratitude to enslaved Black persons. There would be no musical identity without what we brought from Africa and the experience of being enslaved. I believe in reclaiming the spaces that belonged to Black Americans. All the music that we love really belongs to the Black folks. Everyone knows that this is all our stuff and had a really good time playing with it, but we want our stuff back. ION: You described making your album saying, “I wanted to say and do something that felt substantial.” Did you hit that mark? MK: I’m so glad I have this time capsule of where I was in my soul and life. SEPT/OCT 2021

Now I want to risk saying more, being more vulnerable open, deeper about opening the conversation about myself, my sexuality, my ethnicity, the way the world is right now, about relationships and heartbreak. It’s going to be an evermoving goalpost. I don’t want to be too satisfied with what I’m doing; I want to see if there’s a way to push it further.

art, or consume my time to acknowledge both. Sometimes being Black and queer in gay spaces is to be completely invisible. I want to be in queer spaces where I feel seen as a Black, queer person, and celebrated with other people because I’m just a human being who deserves that kind of respect, love and care.

ION: Are you in a relationship?

ION: Your performances often have audiences crying, you crying, … everybody crying. What can we expect at your show at the Chandler Center for the Arts on October 10?

MK: I am! It’s one of the benefits of COVID. I was able to figure what parts of myself were trash, and I threw those things away, and I cultivated the things that I felt were seedlings that with a little bit of sunlight and water could grow into something beautiful. Because I was that real with myself, somebody saw the realness in me and decided they wanted to tag along for a little while. ION: You tweeted: “There is a superpower in being underestimated because there is no ego; let me be a truth teller.” MK: When you’re at the top the expectation is so high that you’re almost not allowed to be as wild with your truth or opinion because there’s so many people willing to pull apart what you say. When you’re an underdog fewer people will hear it, but the people who hear will really be affected by it. ION: In a discussion for “Creating a safe space for identity exploration” at the 112th NAACP Virtual National Convention you said, “I’m Black, and I’m gay; I never felt the need to turn the volume down being in other spaces.” How do you stay with your full-self on high at all times? MK: It’s really difficult. A lot of Black people turn their Blackness down because it feels like we’re not welcome or seen or appreciated. Our humanity, day to day lives, are ignored. Black faces are also called upon to turn their queerness down. I live in a body that houses my Blackness and my queerness, I have expectations of those who consume my 38

MK: I’m gonna do my best not to cry, just to sing my songs. More than anything it’s a full, emotional experience. I want you to laugh, and feel, and faint. I will go as far as the audience allows me to go. I want the audience to tell me what kind of show they want from me. If the audience comes ready to take a journey, to really explore themselves and have a good time, that’s what we’re gonna do.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye Cast: Jessica Chastain, Andrew Garfield, Cherry Jones, Fredric Lehne, Louis Cancelmi, Sam Jaeger, Gabriel Olds, Mark Wystrach, and Vincent D’Onofrio This biographical drama traces the rise, fall and redemption of tacky, wacky, controversial, yet weirdly lovable televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. In the 1970s and 80s, together with her humbug husband, Jim Bakker, they created the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park and grifting big bucks from the Trinity Broadcasting Network faithful over the course of time — all in the name of Jesus, bless your heart. The religious rascals rose to the heights of televangelist fame with their syndicated talk show The PTL Club. Eventually, fraud, scheming rivals, and Jim Bakker’s sex scandal toppled their empire down in 1987 when Bakker was accused of trying to cover up rape allegations involving then secretary (and future Playboy Playmate) Jessica Hahn as well as accounting fraud. Like, really big fraud. The cheery, forever weepy Tammy Faye stood by her husband, although eventually filed for divorce in 1992. The quirky camp icon Tammy Faye was legendary for her clownish, garish makeup, tarantula-like eyelashes, and her laughably terrible singing, but the chipper little gal embraced people from all walks of life. She loved gay men, and gay men loved her. Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Bakker, who valiantly contributes to the camp canon with her own idiosyncratic TikTok videos. The actress acquired the rights to Tammy Faye Bakker’s life in 2012. Chastain will also be performing her own covers of Tammy Faye’s priceless (yet awful) singing. Eventually, the lovable Tammy Faye was redeemed in the eyes of those who loved her. She died in 2007 from colon cancer which spread to her lungs. She was 65-years-old. The Eyes of Tammy Faye is based on the 2000 documentary of the same name, codirected by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, the co-creators of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and narrated by RuPaul. The Eyes of Tammy Faye opens in theaters nationwide September 17. SEPT/OCT 2021
