hen people say gay people are going to Hell, I always say at least Phoenicians are used to the heat. I also say if Hell is filled with gay people then it’s going to be one “hell” of a party. It will called “Eternal Flamer” and it will be hosted by the late great Jeffrey Sanker. This will date me and young people won’t understand just like they never used a fold out map, corded landline or Yellow Pages. You see, adult content was scarce when I was growing up. You took what you could get. Little gay boys would anxiously await the delivery of the new Sears (remember them?) catalog. Why? The underwear section of course. I don’t have to explain what happened next but let’s just say it was climactic. Back then, though, it was mostly whitey tightness with the occasional low rise brief. Fast forward (on your VCR) to today and we have a huge selection of sexy underwear to please just about everyone and they are available right down the street at the Off Chute, Too. No catalog needed. You’ll never go back to boxers (that’s a thing right?) or high-rise Hanes briefs. This issue celebrates how far we and underwear have come. Changing the Game This moving documentary released in 2019 delves into the growing and timely controversial issue of transgender inclusion in sports, following athletes at all stages of their athletic seasons and personal lives. With a slew of anti-trans legislation coming down the pipeline, hopefully this doc becomes a vital tool for educating the public about this hot button issue.

Hacks Something for bisexuals! Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) is a Joan Rivers-like Vegas comedy diva whose career is flagging. A young bisexual writer, Ava, (Hannah Einbinder) is hired to spruce up her act in this comedy-drama series. Sparks fly. Added LGBT Element: Smart starred in the beloved gay approved sitcom Designing Women (1985-99).

Swan Song Udo Kier stars in this heartwarming feature as retired hairdresser Pat Pitsenbarger. He escapes his dismal Sandusky, Ohio nursing home after he’s informed of his former client and “frenemy” the arch-conservative Rita Parker Sloan’s (Linda Evans, who starred as Krystal Carrington of 80’s prime time soap Dynasty fame) dying wish: for Pat to do her makeup and bust up her heavenly hairdo as she goes to claim her eternal reward. (“Bury her with bad hair!” he hisses.) But money talks. Pat takes the sizable, boards his Rascal and takes off on a journey to confront the ghosts of his past—and gather beauty supplies. Armed with an endless cache of MORE cigarettes, a pastel polyester double-knit wardrobe, and his last diamond encrusted pinky ring, Pat breaks out of the home, hitchhiking across town with a cardboard sign offering, “Free Beauty Tips” on his way—and to take care of some unfinished business, including visiting the grave of his deceased partner, David. During Pat’s trip down the derelict Memory Lane where he once held sway as the glorious drag queen masquerading as “Mister Pat” at the fading Sandusky show bar, The Universal Fruit and Nut Company, we learn about the value of friendship, attachments to the past, what you keep and what you discard. What’s notable about writer/ director Todd Stephens’ (Edge of Seventeen) heartfelt salute to a real-life local legend is that the occasional John Waters-like campiness of its outrageous plot becomes secondary to the soulful poignancy. Swan Song is a comical and bittersweet journey about rediscovering your sparkle and looking gorgeous while you’re doing it. It’s also a love letter to a vanishing queer culture, paying tribute to our often outrageously queer and super gay forbearers who blazed the trail for the rights many of us have today. Todd Stephens said, “Above all, this film is about learning that it’s never too late to live again.” The supporting cast includes Michael Urie (Ugly Betty’s Marc St. James) and the always fabulous Jennifer Coolidge (Legally Blonde, Best in Show). es, Barbra! The Blonde One stars in new Saturday night show at Bliss-ReBAR.

f you have an ear for music, and you have an eye for a maid, if you like a pretty girlie with each pretty tune that’s played, you’ll be excited to know that The Blonde One we all know and love—Miss Barbra Seville—proudly announced that she will be practicing the manly art of female illusion downtown every Saturday night at Bliss ReBAR starting this month with her new show: “ReBARB: The Barbra Seville Show, beloved by generations of Arizonans, visiting foreign dignitaries and scores of shrieking, inebriated bridal parties. The show at the new venue will still feature the star’s legendary hilarity and back talkin’ smack, plus guest performers, drink specials and more. So much more. Richard Stevens, the creative force who is Barbra Seville said, “There’s so much energy downtown now, it was a no-brainer to move my show to Bliss ReBAR.” “We couldn’t be more excited to be the new home of The Barbra Seville Show. We’ve been working with Barbra for over six years with Blush Drag Brunch and to now have her weekly Saturday night show exposes Barbra and the art of drag to an expanded audience downtown,” said co-owner Mark Howard. “We know her loyal fans will follow her wherever she goes and we can’t wait to showcase a drag show in this more intimate performance space at Bliss ReBAR.” The jokes, the jibes, the song and dance, the glamorous wigs leaving Seville’s fans agog and clamoring for more will all be included. “I’m excited to work with the folks at Bliss ReBAR on a regular basis. We’ve had a great time with the monthly drag brunch over the years. We’ve sold out every time since we started,” Stevens humbly admitted. (That’s a lot of Eggs Benedicts plus even more Bloody Marys and Mimosas.) For those who can’t get enough hash browns, now Drag Brunch will be served twice monthly. The Barbra Seville Show has always been a hot ticket keeping the blondacious showgirl’s spectacle one of the top shows in the Valley for over twelve years. “I’m working on some new bells and whistles to give the new show a different JUL/AUG 2021

‘after dark’ feeling,” Stevens confided. But the time honored standards and traditions audiences have come to know and love through the years will still be in Barbra’s drag bag o’ tricks. Know what that is? The Wheel of Shots, of course. “It’s the star of the show! People have come across the country to see the Wheel,” Stevens kidded. “Hey, listen, I know what side my bread is buttered on.” Who doesn’t love spinning and winning a shot of tasty, nutritious and delicious DeKuyper’s Pucker? The COVID-19 Pandemic was an income-earning blow to many entertainers and show queens. Despite the devastating global health hiccup, Barbra was able to successfully cinch up her girdle, point her foam rubber tits to the wind and forge onward. “I’ve kept the Barbra Seville machine going uninterrupted. I was able use the downtime to hit the road and go on tour; it’s exciting for me to be able to do this again. Austin, Memphis, Palm Springs are coming up. “Doing the online show by myself as well as brunch showed me that we could change the format of the show from a standard four girl rotation,” Stevens said. “It made many of us better performers and use this as an opportunity to up our game and come through as a stronger queen,” Stevens said. “I’m going to continue to work with the top entertainers in my shows,” he anticipates. This Saturday night extravaganza creates the only downtown drag show along with the longest running Drag Brunch also hosted by The Barbra soon to be every first and third Sunday of the month (some dates may change due to occasional conflicts with holidays, touring schedules and late night television appearances.) How three people, a bake sale, and a kooky doll started something big. By: Deon Brown

Picture it. Phoenix. 1986. A small cocktail bar and cabaret called Wink’s on north Seventh Street starts feeling the effects of unexplainable virus striking sexually active mostly gay men across America. And killing them. AIDS was on the move and not showing any signs of slowing down. Rather than watch their friends die while an ignorant government did nothing, some enterprising, compassionate folks and a papier-mâché doll at that long gone watering hole decided to do something. Do you know who that doll was? Back in those days it was mostly drag queens trying to help save their friends who had no resources. People like Skip O’Neill, the late Randy Schrock and Gary Mangum (better known as the comical drag queen Tish Tanner, a Wink’s staple who is remembered today with an honorary stage at the Phoenix Pride Festival) wanted to help. The original personification of “Aunt Rita” was based on a character concept of Randy Schrock’s: a mothering, little old lady; someone who would care for those suffering with AIDS. (Top) A grass roots movement began and Aunt Rita’s budding foundation was born. So, life is what you bake of it. Starting in 1986 the first Aunt Rita’s bake sale happened one Sunday morning in the parking lot at Wink’s, thanks to the efforts of a handful of bartenders, cocktail servers, and regular customers who brought muffins, pies, bundt cakes, cinnamon rolls, brownies and cookies galore. The first bake sale raised raised $2,400—almost $5,900 in today’s money. That’s a lotta dough, you could say. It was only natural that an “Aunt Rita” mascot should be created. The myth and lore of the creation of the “Aunt Rita” doll is a little hazy, but sometime in the 90’s she was made by an artist named Franco. Skip O’Neill purchased the queer doll figure for $300. (Middle) The little old lady clip art morphed into a laughably homely showgirl made of papier-mâché who watched over the annual bake sale pastries for ten years until the last bake sale ten years later in 1996. Off duty from the annual bake sales, Aunt Rita stood on the smoky bar’s piano or perched behind a banquette at Wink’s. The doll was periodically re-painted, re-decorated, and re-glittered depending on the holiday. When Wink’s closed its doors around 2001 the nicotine glazed, dusty, cracked and oft-repaired old Aunt Rita was exiled. She spent the past 20 years stashed in closets and being fostered by those who couldn’t bear to part with her and the memories of what she represented from those hard times when AIDS struck. After a hiatus, in 2005 the Aunt Rita’s Foundation was formally organized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit. The work they do is still relevant and still necessary. HIV/AIDS is manageable. JUL/AUG 2021

It was time to remind people about “Aunt Rita.” When Jimmy Thomason was selected as the Executive Director of Aunt Rita’s Foundation earlier this year, he decided it was time to resurrect the wobbly old gal from mothballs, dust her off, and put the showgirl in a showcase specially built just for her and featuring the Wink’s logo of a piano keyboard. “Considering her history she’s pretty well-preserved. She’s a hot mess, but who isn’t at her age?” Thomason laughed. The funny Aunt Rita figure might seem like an obscure bit of memorabilia to those who don’t remember those uncertain early days here in Phoenix, but she represents and important time and what a community’s love, care and involvement can do. If you don’t remember your past, you’ll get lost trying to find your way to the future. “Aunt Rita is the only tangible and iconic item we have from the early days of the organization,” Thomason pointed out. “The stories have all been generational word-of-mouth about how we began and who Aunt Rita was.” More than just an oddball relic, she means something for people who remember those days to be able to see this kooky papier-mâché doll who stood on top of a white, baby grand piano in a small cocktail and show bar three decades ago. Now Phoenix is a “Fast-Track City.” This initiative was launched in Paris on World AIDS Day in 2014 and spearheaded by Aunt Rita’s in Phoenix. The ultimate goal is to end the stigma and discrimination associated with AIDS and to end HIV by 2030. “I plan on staying until we reach that goal. Aunt Rita’s Foundation collaborates with all Arizona HIV Service Organizations supporting their critical services while creating partnerships with state and local governments as well as private corporations. Aunt Rita’s Foundation has provided more than $2,100,000 in grant funding in support of critical HIV prevention and treatment programs throughout Arizona since 1985. Aunt Rita’s Foundation currently helps fund 14 HIV/AIDS agencies including: Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Native Health, Chicanos for la Causa, TERROS, one•n•ten, parceling out $10,000 per agency, per year. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 was Aunt Rita’s best year being funded.
