Phoenix Earns Perfect Score On LGBTQ Inclusion For Eighth Year In A Row
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) announced this December 10 that the city of Phoenix earned a perfect score of 100 for its ongoing efforts to ensure equal treatment of members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community.
DINING OUT ► PHX / SCOTTS ► WOK N ROLL
The HRC uses the Municipal Equality Index (MEI) score to examine how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are of LGBTQ people who live and work in each city. The MEI evaluates 506 cities nationwide for LGBTQ inclusion based on non-discrimination laws, the municipality as an employer, municipal services, law enforcement and the city leadership’s public position on equality. “The City of Phoenix is one that values and accepts the individuality of every resident. Earning a perfect score of 100 for the eighth year in a row highlights the fulfillment of our promise to be a city that works for everyone,” said Mayor Kate Gallego. “While we still have work to do, this announcement is cause to celebrate a win not just for Phoenix but for equality.” “As a city, we have so much to celebrate with eight consecutive years of a perfect score,” said Phoenix Vice Mayor Betty Guardado.

elcome back! 2020 has been a challenging year for all of us. But America will always rebound and build back better. The Arizona LGBTQ community was not immune to this pain and devastation. But like America, we will rise from the ashes. Like many businesses/organizations, ION Arizona closed our offices in March. It was a tough decision. But now, ION Arizona is announcing some major changes at relaunch: We have a 16-page print preview and this 100+ page digital issue available exclusively online, Facebook and on the ION APP. We redesigned ION magazine and our new website is coming soon. Both designed from the ground up. More photos, new fun features, more city event guides all in a clean easy to read format. The January 2021 issue of ION will be a full print version. 19 years ago, we created a magazine that fit in your pocket and was an easy to use guide to the Arizona LGBTQ community. Now we added a community mobile APP that’s already in your pocket and an easier to use guide. It continues our tradition of helping you navigate our community. Your community in your pants, 24/7. Always on, always on YOU! Support the businesses that support our community. Now, more than ever, they need your help. If you are a business/organization that wants to reach out to our fabulous community, e-mail me directly today. The best is yet to come. WE’RE BACK!

ey, Kat! Everyone knows this face—with or without a mask. Since 2014 Kat’s been a champion cocktail creator at Kobalt where she’s a favorite of every souse in the house. When COVID reared its ugly head and bars were shuttered, Kat’s cottage industry kicked into overdrive making masks, gaiters, caps and beanies printed and embroidered with social commentary that keeps up with the times. Take your pick at HeyKat.co ... Shenanigans since 2018.
eople ask,“What Would Oscar Do?” He’d wear a mask, for starters. As an architect, designer, commentator, arbiter of trends, fashion commentator, and someone who knows what’s-what, Oscar knows and it shows. But what really motivates Oscar is activism and volunteering. “My passions are what identifies me. These define me as an immigrant, an American and as LGBT.” He lends his talents to the Arizona Council for the Arts, Valley Youth Theatre and more. He also spearheaded campaigns with Latinos for Biden for the 2020 Presidential election. That’s just part of “what Oscar does.” Be like Oscar.

he Rainbow Revolution, Magnus Hastings’ extraordinary new book containing over 300 photographs of the LGBTQIA community. The LA-based British photographer spent two years photographing his subjects in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and London, asking them to pose in a custom-made white box which functioned as a 3-D canvas or stage on which to express their identities. Celebratory, confrontational, witty and political, the photographs develop Hastings’ exploration of gender performance, identity and the lived queer experience begun in his acclaimed, now iconic, first volume of photographs, Why Drag? (2016) in which the artists answered the book title’s question with fascinating results. For Rainbow Revolution Hastings went further, asking people about their childhoods and other challenges, and the result is a series of deeply personal essays that accompany the photographs. “As ever more gender 30
and sexual identities were being named, it felt important to listen to people’s stories,” he says. “Attitudes to gender and sexual identity are changing rapidly but the world is still a dangerous place for minorities,” he says. “Governments are increasingly right wing and our hard-won freedoms are being eroded. It’s crucial that we are seen and heard.” Hastings enlisted participants from a multiplicity of backgrounds including lawyers, vets, wedding planners, activists, drag queens and kings, handymen, plastic surgeons, musicians, historians and dog walkers, as well as a smattering of celebrities like pop icon Boy George, actor Luke Evans, singer Meow Meow, drag artist Alaska Thunderfuck and the actor and comedian Kathy Griffin, a beloved queer ally. Formal family portraits are touching in their conventionality and in their implicit flouting of it; couples pose in bondage, suits, plaid shirts or ballgowns; some bring pets, others feather boas, while surgeons wear scrubs, dancers contort their bodies and bend minds. There are nudes of all shapes, sizes and sexualities. While his subjects are ripping up the scripts they were handed at birth by choosing different ways to live and love, Hastings challenges the heteronormative world view by re-framing queerness as quite simply marvelously human.

SOUTHWEST CENTER for HIV/AIDS
Life Begins at the Center
For three decades the Southwest Center has been Arizona’s home for financially accessible, culturally competent, LGBTQ+ friendly healthcare. The Southwest Center family takes a compassionate, holistic approach to prevention, care and support services. Everyone there is devoted to creating a healthier, more vibrant Arizona. It can be scary to get tested for exposure to HIV/AIDS, but knowing your status gives you the power to make the best choices for your health. That’s why Southwest Center offers free, non-judgmental HIV and Sexually Transmitted Disease/Infection (STD/STI) testing in English, ASL, and Spanish at their clinic and off-site at several locations Valleywide. Whether you just got diagnosed or if you’ve been living with HIV, the Southwest Center’s medical team can help you get the care you need. For those who test HIV-positive in our clinic, they can often start you on anti-retroviral treatment the same day.
“Since the beginning of this epidemic, the fight against HIV has always been more than a search for a cure,” reflected Chuck Peterson, the Center’s Executive Director. “It’s been a battle for human dignity to demonstrate that each life, regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, nation of origin, or religion has inherent value. HIV continues to this day to take the largest toll on our most marginalized communities. People should have the right to health care and the supports they need to live their best lives.” The Southwest Center can also identify syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea and prescribe the correct course of treatment. They also offer HIV prevention with PEP (Post-exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), an emergency prevention method that can help stop HIV if you’ve been exposed to it within the last 72 hours. If you’re sexually active, Preexposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a once-a-day pill that helps prevent HIV. TeleTesting is a virtual way for you to meet their team and learn your HIV status. They will ship you a test kit and provide you with one-on-one guided support when you learn your results. In addition, their TRANS Program includes peer health navigation, HIV resources, stigma-free behavioral health counseling, and primary care including hormone therapy initiation and management. They also offer guidance and support including access to high-quality care for the transgender and gender non-conforming members of our community.
OUTREACH PROGRAMS IGNITE Your Status The IGNITE Your Status outreach project seeks to normalize the conversation and eliminate the stigma around safer sex and HIV. IGNITE’s leaders distributes safer sex materials, provides education & assistance with PrEP, and discusses safer sex, HIV, and STIs.
The TEA Phoenix The TEA Phoenix (Teaching, Empowering, and taking Action) is the Southwest Center’s Mpowerment project serving gay and bi men of color under age 30 in the Phoenix community. “I believe that together we are better,” affirms Peterson. “Together we will build healthy communities, reduce new HIV infections, and improve HIV-related health outcomes. Anyone who walks through our doors will feel welcomed and have the opportunity to build a healthy and thriving future.” Due to COVID-19 concerns, the Center now offers clinic care and counseling using telemedicine. Their staff is available to answer your questions about sexual health in their new video chat room, Southwest Center Online.
SOUTHWEST CENTER FOR HIV/AIDS 1101 N Central Ave, Suite 200 Phoenix, AZ 85004 UPDATED HOURS: Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. QUESTIONS/CONCERNS? Call their Front Desk at 602-307-5330. If you believe you have been exposed to HIV within the last 72 hours and they are not open, call their PEP hotline at 480638-1374 and a navigator will help you find medical care. CHINESE PLUS SUCHI
Wok ’n Roll
Chinese. Sushi. Sports. Bingo and Karaoke. Take a Wok on the Wild Side!
ou’ll find an eclectic fusion of fare from the home of the Red Dragon, the Land of the Rising Sun and a few tasty treats from Southeast Asia here in this cozy Scottsdale Catonese canteen. Shareable plates are the name of the game here, with all ingredients, including fresh fish, delivered daily. Appetizers like Seoul Spicy Wings, Crab Rangoon, Spring Rolls, Pork Egg Rolls, Seaweed Salad and all tastebud tempting. We chose traditional Fried Potstickers which did not disappoint at six for $7.29 For bigger plates with very; generous helpings, pick from entrées of Fried Rice, Teriyaki and noodle bowls with luscious Udon or Dan Dan Noodles, and a variety of Chow Mein and Pad Thai dishes filled with goodness. There’s more than enough for you, and plenty to go around. You’ll salute their sweet, spicy version of General Tso’s. Now, pick your own protein. We chose the traditional chicken for $12.29 and didn’t regret it. We opted for the nutty, crunchy brown rice for a little extra crunch. You’ll go gaga for their Mongolian with wok-seared mushrooms, scallions, garlic, and a rich, sweet, teriyaki-like soy sauce. We’re traditionalists so beef as our protein. Chicken, pork, shrimp are other options, with tofu and vegetables are there for non-meat eaters. Say, “Open, Sesame!” and you’ll get crispy, rice sesame stick noodles, battered tempura, all topped with sesame seeds. Take a wok on the wild side with Orange chicken. The Kung Pao is knock-out. Have a nibble ‘n’ nosh of Nippon! Try their sushi or sashimi and rolls. Personally, I’m a big fan of unagi (grilled freshwater eel, prized for its stamina-giving properties) and Wok ‘n’ Roll’s is the best I’ve had. Big, tender, plump and full o’ flavor. Looking for a deal? Ask about their Specials. Interested in sports? This is the place to be. Happy Hour is Mon-Sat from 3-6 p.m. Keep your Thursdays open, because it’s Drag Bingo with Tragique from 8-10 p.m. with fun for everyone! Who could ask for anything more? See you there! Chop! Chop!

PEOPLE WE’VE LOST BUT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN
He was Marcellus Saunders, III on the dotted line, but we all knew him as the splashy, wild, irrepressible, very funny “Kiki Andrews.” Warm, funny, and talented, there wasn’t a stage big enough for her expansive personality. As a fun loving hostess at bars and clubs across town through the years, Kiki’s party wasn’t complete unless you had a seat at table where she always made sure you were welcome. And we know when Kiki made it to the Pearly Gates, she was running late. How could we ever forget you?
