AUGUST Tech Petting Zoo With Linden Lab (Tween Tech Series)

Wednesday, August 3 between 2-3:30pm Drop by to learn about the latest in virtual reality with special guests from Linden Lab. They will share what they do as virtual entertainment developers and demo the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. Then try out some of the library’s tech toys like an Ozobot mini-robot and the 3-D Doodle Pen. Ages 10-15.

Gold Medal Books

June - August Have you read a gold medal-worthy book? Enter it into our Summer Reading Games! Submissions can be dropped into the gold box in the teen area or emailed to mengland@jmrl.org. Each submission is also an entry into a raffle for a gift certificate. Starting July 25, come to the library to vote on your top choices. Bronze, silver, and gold medal books will be revealed at our End of Summer party on August 16.

Fencing for the Win

Saturday, August 13 at 2pm Join us for a fencing demonstration with Blue Ridge Fencing Center. They will be demonstrating the olympic sport of fencing, including historical techniques and some hands on fun. For all ages.

Teen Murder Mystery: Causality Carnival

Wednesday, August 17 at 7pm The Advisory Committee of Teens invites you to a night of clues, sleuthing, and fun. You’ll question suspects, examine evidence, and attempt to solve the mystery. We’ll have prizes and treats. Grades 5-12. Registration required and begins on August 3.

Summer Reading Kickoff Olympics

Tuesday, June 7 at 11:45am Come join the Louisa County Library for our summer program kickoff. The Library Olympics will be held including games such as discus & javelin throw, ring toss, and more. Athlete registration begins at 11:45am and the torch lighting relay race will be at noon, followed by games and snacks. The form will ask you to list three of your favorite authors or books, which genres you are interested in, and what type of content you’d like to avoid. August 3: Stick Binding Postcard Book Postcards are visually beautiful and help us relive happy memories, but organizing them in a way that enables us to easily access and enjoy them is another matter. Using a simple stick binding method, you will bind your collection into an attractive and artistic book you will be proud to read and share with others. Bring your own postcards.

Monthly on Wednesdays Interested in Northside’s Makerspace? Learn how to use a different piece of tech or software each session. Ages 11+. Registration required and begins two weeks before program date.

June 15 at 5pm: Makey Makey Mayhem Program and use MaKey MaKey micro-controllers during this hands-on (and a little bit messy) workshop.

July 27 at 2pm: GarageBand Join expert Trevor Williams of Cville Tech Tutors to learn how to use GarageBand.

August 17 at 5pm: TinkerCAD Learn the basics of designing for 3D printing with TinkerCAD, an easiest-to-use (and free!) CAD program, and leave the program with a self-designed keychain file.

Self-Defense Workshop with IBBCV Learn the basics of self-defense with the Game Corner International Black Belt Center of Virginia. The IBBCV has operated in Charlottesville since 1992, Hang out with your friends in Northside’s Game and offers classes in traditional taekwon-do. Waiver Corner. The Game Corner has a Wii with Mario required. Limit: 18 participants.

Northside Minecraft Club

Third Tuesdays at 4-5:30pm June 21, July 19, August 16 Minecrafters, join us for a different challenge each month. The server will be open for approved users to build, explore, and hang out with fellow Minecrafters.

Featuring a common spawn-point, participants can mine, build, and craft in the library’s world in a safe, enjoyable environment. Grades 3-12.

Monday, June 6 at 4pm This summer the Olympic Games are being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The summer reading challenge theme at JMRL is “Read for the Win.” Fun is the object of our spin on the ancient games.

Sweet & Sour: Herbal Honeys & Vinegars

Tuesday, June 14 at 6-8:30pm Honey and vinegar infused with medicinal herbs is a wonderful way to bring nourishment and healing into your every day. In this workshop we’ll discuss the medicinal qualities of many of our local abundant plants and how honey and vinegar can increase those qualities. There will be lots of samples and you will leave with recipes to get you started creating delicious herbal extracts at home.
