JMRL is embarking on the second season of its podcast, On The Same Page.

Season one featured 12 months of author visits, speakers, library news, interviews with local authors and community members, and a healthy dose of book recommendations. Season two will have more of the same, with a fresh new feel.

It is hosted and produced by Erica and Abby, librarians from the Central Reference Department.

Episodes are released on the first and 15th of each month and generally run from 30-60 minutes.

FALL LIBRARY NEWS HELP PLAN THE FUTURE OF JMRL

August – September We want to hear from you! The Jefferson-Madison Regional Library invites you to help plan the future of library services in the city of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson. Public feedback will be collected via survey through September 2018 and your ideas will help to craft the next JMRL strategic plan. Paper copies of the survey are available at each branch library, or an online version can be filled out at jmrl.org/future.

THE GIVING TREE

November 5 – December 7 Share your love of reading with a child enrolled in the local Head Start, YMCA or Virginia Preschool Initiative preschool program. Select a name at a participating library beginning November 5 and buy a gift picture book to return unwrapped to the library

by December 7. Available at the Central, Crozet, Gordon Avenue, Greene, Nelson, Northside, and Scottsville branches.

The most important thing you can do to help your child be ready for Kindergarten is reading aloud to them. JMRL’s new 1000 Books Before Kindergarten can help you “Build A Reader.”

Stop by any branch to pick up your first sheet for 50 books. After 50 books, turn in your sheet to receive a folder and be officially registered for the program. After 100 books, you’ll receive a tote bag. Make it to 1000 books and you’ll receive a certificate and a free book.

Wednesday, September 5 between 5:45-8:45pm Learn to prepare for disasters that could impact your community. In an emergency, CERT members assist others when professional responders are not immediately available, and take a more active role in emergency preparedness projects. This class will cover personal preparedness, hazards, and an introduction into fire safety and medical operations.

Friday, November 16 at 10am-12pm If you had a health crisis, how would you want decisions made about your care, and who would you want making those decisions? This workshop will cover the basics you need to know to write your own Advance Directive (AD). Once completed and shared with your health care providers, your AD will guide care during a physical health crisis and/or mental health crisis. Empower yourself with knowledge, and an AD!

SEWING FOR BEGINNERS

Thursday, December 13 at 6:30-8pm Interested in learning to sew, but beginner projects all look like something your great-grandmother would’ve made? Don’t be afrayed, weave got the solution. You can choose from a pop culture-inspired design, or create your own pattern. Each participant will receive a kit to take home. Ages 11-18.

FAMILY ART DROP-IN

Friday, December 14 at 3-4:30pm Families are invited to make a non-edible gingerbread house. Great art can be messy, so come dressed to create at the library. For children up to age 12.

YULE BALL

Saturday, December 15 at 2-4pm Don your finest semi formal or wizardly garb, it’s time for Northside’s first Yule Ball. Join us for an afternoon full of magically delicious snacks, bewitching music, owls, and other spellbinding activities. Muggles and squibs welcome. Ages 10-18.

THE NUTCRACKER BALLET WORKSHOP

Tuesday, December 11 at 3:30-4:30pm The Charlottesville Ballet will be here to share the magic of The Nutcracker Ballet with us. This event will include a story reading, a mini ballet lesson, and a solo by a ballet dancer. After the event, the performers will answer questions and there will be time for photos with the dancers.
