NEWS FROM QUEEN’S PARK

On May 14, 2020, the Ontario government announced the retailers, seasonal businesses and health and community service providers who will be permitted to open or expand their services on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at 12:01 a.m., provided that the general trend on health indicators continues to improve as part of the first stage of the government’s reopening framework. The workplaces opening as part this stage are well-positioned to put workplace safety measures in place and get more people back to work, while not overburdening public transit and other services.

The government also announced additional seasonal services and activities will be permitted to open as early as Saturday May 16, 2020 at 12:01 a.m., in time for the Victoria Day long weekend, as key public health indicators continue to show progress.

The details were provided by the Premier, the Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, and the Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development.

As soon as 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2020: • Golf courses will be able to open, with clubhouses open only for washrooms and restaurants open only for take-out.

• Marinas, boat clubs and public boat launches may open for recreational use.

• Private parks and campgrounds may open to enable preparation for the season and to allow access for trailers and recreational vehicles

whose owners have a full season contract.

• Businesses that board animals, such as stables, may allow boarders to visit, care for or ride their animal.

The government’s responsible and measured approach to reopening will allow business owners and service provider’s time to ensure workplaces are safe for staff, consumers and the general public. Assuming trends in key public health indicators continue to improve, Ontario’s first stage of reopening will begin on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at 12:01 a.m. and will include: • Retail services that are not in shopping malls and have separate street-front entrances with measures in place that can enable physical distancing, such as limiting the number of customers in the store at any one time and booking appointments beforehand or on the spot.

• Seasonal businesses and recreational activities for individual or single competitors, including training and

sport competitions conducted by a recognized national or provincial sport organization.

This includes indoor and outdoor non-team sport competitions that can be played while maintaining physical distancing and without spectators, such as tennis, track and field and horse racing.

• Animal services, specifically pet care services, such as grooming and training, and regular veterinary appointments.

• Indoor and outdoor household services that can follow public health guidelines, such as housekeepers, cooks, cleaning and maintenance.

• Lifting essential workplace limits on construction.

• Allowing certain health and medical services to resume, such as in-person counselling and scheduled surgeries based on the ability to meet pre-specified conditions as outlined in A Measured Approach to Planning for Surgeries and Procedures During the COVID-19 Pandemic, as well as resuming

professional services such as shifting Children’s Treatment Centres from virtual to in-person.

The government and health and safety associations have released more than 90 safety guidance documents to assist employers in multiple sectors, including construction, retail, facilities maintenance and manufacturing. As new sectors of the economy begin to reopen, additional resources will be made available to help protect the safety of workers and the general public.

To support businessowners, workers and the economic recovery of the province, the government has launched a website to provide businesses with information on personal protective equipment (PPE) suppliers. The Workplace PPE Supplier Directory has an up-to-date list of Ontario companies and business associations that are ready to supply personal protective equipment.

Liberation of The Netherlands by Canadians troops 75 years ago.

Last year, South Carleton Legion Branch 314 laid plans for a “Special Ceremony of Thanks” in which our local Dutch community would have the opportunity to thank their Canadian hosts commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian troops.

Given the current age of surviving WWII veterans, this would likely be the last opportunity for these veterans to attend such ceremonies.

In anticipation of the 75th liberation anniversary, Dutch tulip growers developed the very special and unique red/orange “Liberation Tulip”. More than 600 of these tulip bulbs were planted last fall in Manotick Remembrance Park, the

planned site of the ceremony. It was hoped, if not expected, the tulips would be in bloom by May 5, 2020, the date of the ceremony. Unfortunately, a much colder than usual spring prevented the tulips to bloom in time.

Also most unfortunate, Covid-19 caused the city to prohibit group activities in all city parks, including Manotick Remembrance Park, thereby preventing a public ceremony in the park. Nevertheless, the organizers and about a dozen others, mostly Dutch expats, held a brief but heartfelt ceremony on the sidewalk adjacent to the park, maintaining six foot spacing and wearing masks. Local farms adapting to stay on top of food production

While businesses are easing back into the new normal, the local agricultural industry has also had to adapt to a new set of parameters in their business model.

Carleton MPP Goldie Ghamari hosted a town hall meeting on Zoom May 5 to discuss the local agricultural industry and discuss some of the challenges faced by the largest business and employment sector in the riding.

Ghamari said that containing the spread of COVID-19 is “coming at a cost.” Her objective in the town hall meetings was to gather information and feedback to take back to Premier Doug Ford and his Cabinet.

Like many small business owners, Mark Saunders of Saunders Farm in Munster said that COVID-19 has made him completely scrap his business plans for 2020 and redefine what his business will look like in the coming months and even weeks.

“We’re trying to figure out our final planting because we don’t know what the fall looks like,” said Saunders.

ket location in Munster where people can order online and drive through to pick up farm fresh produce and other items.

Customers can order online, and when they arrive, they can simply call the number on the signs, open their trunk, and wait in their car while their order is placed in the trunk of their vehicle. They can pick “It’s been very well received,” Saunders said.

“We’ve been working with about seven different local producers. We’re going to add more suppliers as soon as we can. We’re looking to be a conduit to help farmers get their food to the local market in a different way. We have the reach, so we’re working with some of these farms to sell their product right away.”

COVID-19 has impacted Saunders Farm for events, as many weddings and other special events have been cancelled due to the pandemic.

The uncertainty of what the next few months will bring is also making it difficult for Saunders Farm to plan for pumpkin season and its locally famous Halloween Haunt.

“Even this like planting pumpkins for the fall,” Saunders said, “we don’t know what the fall’s going to look

like. We don’t know if they are going to allow 20 people together or 100 people together on a 100-acre property.”

Like any other business in other sectors, Saunders has had to put protective measures in place for his employees and to keep his employees and the general public safe. Sourcing protective equipment will be a challenge for all agricultural businesses.

“Everyone has gloves and masks right now and we are following all the rules,” Saunders said. “As we staff up, we are going to need more of those things.

“Until we have really great protective measures all over the place, some people don’t want to come and work in an environment that is a little bit risky – more risky than their living room.”

Carleton Mushroom Farms near Osgoode has seen its revenue drop by about 35 per cent, with most of that accounted for by loss of business

from restaurants.

“What’s most important is the protection of our staff and of fellow Canadians,” Medeiros said.

Medeiros has put new measures in place. Employees have their temperatures taken each day, and there are new hand washing stations in place.

“Last year at this time, it seemed like there were always three or four employees who weren’t coming in because they had a cold or a flu or something. Now, with everyone focusing on washing, social distancing, and everyone wearing a mask on the farm, it’s helping. We have no one who is sick right now.”

Although there are a number of programs in place to help businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, Medeiros said there is nothing out there that would help his situation.

“When you realize you’re short of food, it’s too late,” he said. “We have wanted to create a path to permanent residency for TFW’s. There’s a pilot project just beginning, but this should have been done

Medeiros said the provincial and federal governments need to recognize the magnitude of the labour force in the ag-food industry and its importance, and support it accordingly.

The MessengerEDITORIAL MESSENGER EDITORIAL In the right place at the right time Pandemic gives us a chance to re-imagine education With school districts in some parts of Canada drafting plans to reopen, it’s time we ask: What have we learned about education from the days our school buildings were closed?

We might say we’ve learned during the COVID-19 pandemic that there’s a lot more good out there than we’d have hoped to imagine – a lot of creativity and generosity. New curricula, content, resources, platforms, tools, tips, techniques and technology are being developed – and much of it freely shared.

These quick pivots have been accomplished as schools and families adapted from classroom-based to home-based delivery of education.

Will this experience change our perspectives on teaching and learning, once life gets sorted and school buildings open? What will we learn from this period of … well … home-schooling?

One American think-tank has already declared, “We’re all home-schoolers now.”

But that’s just not correct.

Home-schooling is education that takes place primarily outside a large institutional setting, where parents take final responsibility for the selection, management, provision, and supervision of their child’s education program.

Conversely, teachers were and are the ones designing and largely delivering the learning taking place in homes because of the pandemic. They’re just doing it digitally and not in person.

So it’s e-learning, right?

Pedagogically, no. Nor is it online learning, virtual learning, mobile learning, distance learning, distributed learning or even blended learning.

Some are rightly calling it “emergency remote teaching,” as the primary objective is to provide temporary, quick access to instruction and support.

But the curriculum and learning plans are not designed for online delivery.

The education we’ve experienced during school closures is characterized by its lack of opportunity to plan and the huge pieces of the educational ecosystem that are missing. At this point, it’s still crisis management.

The journey is different for every person. The best school, curriculum, or pedagogy for one person or group may not be the best for another. So why do we keep trying to force kids into the same big educational mould – especially now that we have the technology and capacity to do things differently?

Can the economic shutdown and the immense pressure it has inflicted on education budgets not provide us with an opportunity?

Through this lens, perhaps it’s time we reconsider what can be learned from home-schooling and its potential to nourish deep human flourishing.

Perhaps it’s also time we re-imagine education, in all its diverse forms, and how a truly pluralistic education ecosystem benefits all, not just a few.

Now is the time to refine our education programs’ design and delivery so innovation, adaptability and creativity aren’t just features of our disaster response, but how we educate every day.

The Editor, The many challenges with living alone are one thing; one item, being the weather, and another is do you still have your drivers license and now Covid-19. You are told to stay home, stay home, and if you do go out go only for groceries and medical items.

Ok so “groceries” includes pet food and necessities.

will offer to pick up groceries for you – my advice is to accept and it has been great for me! Arrange that when they do pick up and deliver the items that they keep track of the cost and you pay up once a week or as they wish.

If you do go out to a business wear a mask and vinyl gloves and have the items, you are going for on the written list with you. Make your

outing a worthwhile one if you intend to make a second stop do it the same trip. One outing one exposure!

If you happen to be one of the fortunate ones maybe you can go for a short drive by yourself, just to get out of the house – maybe see no one, don’t stop, wave perhaps but “get out of the house”. No rules broken if you follow that scenario.

Don’t forget – when you come home, wash your hands!!

Spring brings back memories Growing up in a small town in Eastern Ontario was a time when we as kids explored the big field at the end of the street. In Spring, we watched the tall grass turn green, the wildflowers bloom, such as the forget-me-nots growing beside the creek, and the cocoons turning into butterflies. We would touch the furry white blossoms of the pussy willow tree. We tried catching tadpoles in a jar of water, and then put them back into the creek so that they could grow legs to become frogs or toads.

Jock River waterfront property the latest donation to RVCF Another ecologically sensitive parcel of land is now under public protection thanks to a donation to the Rideau Valley Conservation Foundation. The new conservation area is a 50-acre parcel located just outside the village of Richmond. It boasts 650 meters of sensitive shoreline area along the Jock River and portions of the provincially significant Richmond Fen. “We are delighted to add this unique and environmentally valuable property to the Conservation Foundation’s land holdings,” said RVCF Chair Jason Kelly. “The McKay waterfront is now one of the Foundation’s 26 unique parcels made possible thanks to community-minded families that include the Alexanders, Bouchers, DePencies, Kaczkowskis and Meisels. These properties are to be kept in a natural state in perpetuity and are

located across the entire Rideau watershed.”

The Conservation Foundation raises funds for local conservation work and is also a land trust that accepts gifts of land from families who wish their beloved rural property to remain in a natural state forever. On average, the RVCF accepts one or two properties each year to add to the stock of future conservation lands in the Rideau Valley.

More and more families and individuals are considering giving their land to the Conservation Foundation. Some donors want to keep it undeveloped and in a natural state forever — others welcome the tax benefits of their donations. Regardless of the motivation, the RVCF reviews and evaluates the environmental benefits of the property prior to acceptance. The RVCF is interested in land that is

ecologically sensitive or has unique water-related features such as wetlands, shorelines and aquifer recharge areas.

The McKay property fit the Foundation’s review process. It’s natural shorelines and wetland areas are valuable areas that help maintain clean water, prevent soil erosion, reduce the impacts of flooding and provide wildlife with food and habitat. They are incredibly productive ecosystems — comparable to rainforests and coral reefs.

Although donated, gifted lands are not free. Each land donation could have a cost of up to $10,000 in terms of legal, surveying and appraisal fees plus the ongoing taxes and maintenance costs in addition to the land itself. Some trust and conservation groups may only accept new lands if such fees are forthcoming. The RVCF does its best to raise these funds so to benefit the

watershed. The local community can help RVCF continue to accept important land donations by donating to the Steve Simmering Endowment Fund.

This fund supports the perpetual costs of maintenance and ownership.

fees, etc.).

Ottawa’s rural Wild Parsnip Program to begin this week

The City of Ottawa 2020 Wild Parsnip Program will start on May 19, 2020, weather permitting. Similar to years past, the goal is to reduce the growth of wild parsnip in areas that are highly infested while ensuring that environmentally sensitive areas and public safety are not adversely impacted.

In total, Council has approved $198,000 for this year’s strategy. The 2020 Strategy consists of the following: • Continue and ex-

pand Clearview herbicide application to highly infested areas, • Continue with mowing, adjusting frequency and timing to best coincide with herbicide applications, • Re-map infestation levels • Continue the communication and awareness campaign in collaboration with partners in Ottawa Public Health (OPH), Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), National Capital

Commission (NCC), etc., • Staff will prepare weekly updates for Councillors on roadside and parkland spraying locations within each ward, • Communication materials (a postcard and an information sheet) are available for distribution to Councillors for their constituents.

Please see attachments for a full listing of the infestation levels and planned treatment locations on roadsides, as well as a list of the planned

treatment locations in parkland. Approximately 1,200 lane km of roadsides/pathways and over 150 locations of parkland will be treated this year.

Roadside cutting is currently underway and additional herbicide application may be considered again for the fall season.

In order to notify the public of the herbicide application, staff has received from the MECP the approval for alternative notification where spraying is being conducted.

Rather than placing signs every 100 m along roadside spraying locations, an MECP-approved “Notice of Herbicide Use” advertisement will appear in local newspapers on May 16th, 2020. However, given the large number of public access points for parks, signs will continue to be posted every 100 m.

Similar to last year, rural residents who do not wish to have the roadside adjacent to their property sprayed have been given the option to opt-out of the

Wild Parsnip program.

Should a resident opt out of the program, it will become their responsibility to manage any Wild Parsnip infestation adjacent to their property, as required by the Weed Control Act, 1990. Information has been shared on how to opt-out as part of the communications to residents on our website and in print materials. For additional information on wild parsnip, please consult the City of Ottawa’s website.

The City of Ottawa, in consultation with Ottawa Public Health (OPH), is advising that the limited use of some spaces in City parks and beaches is now permitted. This does not include the use of sports fields and courts.

Effective immediately, individuals and families can enjoy fresh air and some outdoor activities in City parks. Everyone must also comply with current prohibitions under the Provin-

cial Emergency Orders, including the prohibition on organized public events, gatherings of more than five people, and entry to and use of certain outdoor recreational amenities.

OPH continues to advise that limiting activities to members of your own household remains important to limit the spread of COVID-19 and save lives, and that physical distancing of at least two metres from

non-household members be maintained during these activities.

No decision yet on Residential Growth Management Strategy

One of the most important discussions around the future direction of the City happened over two days at the joint Planning Committee and Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee virtual hearing on May 11 and 12.

The discussion focused on how the City will meet future housing needs of Ottawa residents through a Residential Growth Management Strategy.

No decision was made on the Strategy as Committee members had to gather additional input from City staff as a result of questions raised during the presentations. For example, Councillors are looking for some indication of costs associated with the options before making a decision.

The committee will be making a decision before the May 27 Council meeting as well as voting on a series of amendments proposed at the Committee meeting.

For Manotick and area residents an important amendment is one that will ensure that prime agricultural land will not be used to develop future neighbourhoods. We are also expecting

confirmation that we continue to have a 1 km buffer around the Village protecting us from urban boundary expansion.

What is the Strategy about?

The Growth Management Strategy is a key part of the City’s Official Plan and will address housing needs in the future. The City has determined the population will grow by 402,000 people by 2046 and this growth will require the provision of an additional 195,000 residential units. City staff have recommended a Balanced Scenario that would include an increase in intensification, some growth in the urban boundary and continued growth in rural villages that have the necessary infrastructure.

The focus will be on development close to existing

transportation nodes, limiting the need for new infrastructure and creating walkable neighbourhoods. Intensification is expected to be a mix of high-rise close to transit and smaller 3-4 unit buildings integrated into existing neighbourhoods. Most of the growth in rural villages is already accounted for in existing development plans such as Manotick’s Mahogany Development.

The future expansion of the urban boundary would be based on several criteria, some of which could change following the recent hearing. The criteria include how close the parcels are to existing development, how close they are to transit, what infrastructure already exists in the area, and more. Committee presentations

The Committees received over 1000 written submissions by the May 8 deadline and over 100 individuals, including developers, community groups, planners, ac-

tivists and ordinary citizens, appeared before the virtual Committee hearing.

Presenters talked about the need to expand the boundary to be able to provide affordable housing, the need to ensure that amenities and infrastructure are in place prior to development, the need for walkable communities, the need for affordable housing in urban areas for a variety of groups, the need for protection of agricultural land and the need to provide housing suitable for a variety of demographic groups including seniors and multicultural family units.

The presentation by MVCA called on the City to: 1. protect agricultural lands 2. maintain the 1 km buffer zone around rural villages 3. ensure sufficient green space is included in any new development, particularly high rise developments close to transit.

4. adhere to the Manotick Secondary Plan, which outlines the key components of our walkable community 5. develop more 15 minute walkable commun-

ities throughout the City In addition, we asked the City to consider the possibility of future pandemics and their impact on housing in the development of its Strategy.

What happens next?

The Strategy will go to Council for final approval on May 27 before being submitted to the Minister of Municipal Affairs for final okay. There is no opportunity to appeal the Strategy as it is part of the Official Plan.

Therefore, the Council decision will stand unless the Minister does not approve it. The MVCA will continue to monitor the process over the coming year as the City moves to finalizing its Official Plan.

Urban Boundary: The reality is Ottawa will grow

Whether you live in Manotick, Kanata, Findlay Creek or the Glebe, you will be affected by the decision at Ottawa City Council on expanding the Urban Boundary.

The imaginary line around the outskirts of suburban Ottawa, where the most recent residential developments have gone up, will likely expand to allow more housing to accommodate 400 thousand new residents by 2046.

Councillors listened to two days of presentations from residents, community, environmental groups and developers. All have strong positions on what should happen. On the surface, it seems like a simple decision; it’s not.

Every option carries a price tag.

As a fiscally responsible councillor, I worry about our tax dollars. Ottawa doesn’t have enough money to pay for the infrastructure which is needed immediately.

It is difficult to hear that something as small, but urgent,

like a traffic light on River Road is number ten on a list of projects that won’t be funded for years.

It’s hard for new homebuyers to pay tens of thousands of dollars in development charges but wait many years for new infrastructure to be built.

Adding new homes inside or outside the city’s greenbelt won’t help Ottawa’s financial picture. One presenter, who is a senior researcher at a prominent consulting firm, predicted that Ottawa’s plan for intensification would not come close to raising enough money in development charges to cover capital projects.

So how will Ottawa pay for the roads, parks & community centers those new suburbs will require? It keeps me awake a

night.

I want to vote “No” to any urban expansion, but the reality is Ottawa will grow, we can’t stop it, and we must allow for a choice of housing options. We also have to smarten up and stop repeating the mistakes that have resulted in our current funding gap.

That’s why I am supporting a motion put forward by my council colleague, Laura Dudas, which directs staff to create policies that would ensure every new development application be funded, phased and built so that necessary infrastructure be built at the same time. I added a friendly amendment that would require developers to tell prospective homebuyers of timelines on when services like roads, pools and parks will be built and upgraded.

Council votes on May 27.

Whatever the decision, I hope Council will be committed to doing what’s needed, not what’s expedient.

Coronavirus won’t slow down local construction projects

I would, again, like to begin this column with the latest information available from Ottawa Public Health.

At the time of print, that is the update from May 13th from Dr. Vera Etches: As we continue to see the number of cases of COVID-19 in the community decline, I want to thank Ottawa residents for your efforts to follow public health messaging. I continue to be touched and proud to be a part of this community that has come together and shown such great support for each other during these unprecedented times.

Updated testing criteria

We have reached the next phase in the capacity for COVID19 testing in Ottawa. Ottawa Public Health (OPH) now recommends

that anyone experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms should be tested. Those with symptoms can be assessed by a healthcare provider, and tested, if required, at the COVID-19 Assessment Centre or one of the COVID-19 Care Clinics. If wait times are high, priority will be given to essential workers and healthcare workers. Many primary care offices remain open to assess patients as well, so please call your family physician’s office to see if they can accommodate your visit first. As usual, the advice to stay home when ill is import-

ant to stop the spread of infections. When traveling to access an assessment centre, care clinic or other healthcare setting, please use a non-medical mask or face covering and keep your hands clean.

If you are in distress (e.g. significant trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, or have a significant worsening of any chronic disease symptoms), do not go to the assessment centre or a care clinic. Go to the nearest emergency department or call 9-1-1.

As of yesterday May 12, testing has been completed in Ottawa’s 28 longterm care homes and 76 staff have been tested in the three emergency childcare centers in Ottawa. At the moment, there is no plan to expand the surveillance testing to other settings, however OPH has

proactively reached out to retirement homes that need support with our healthcare partners. And, supports to other congregate care settings, like group homes and shelters, continue to evolve.

COVID-19 Support Teams have continued outreach to long-term care homes identified by public health as ‘high risk’ and homes flagged as moderate risk are also being engaged. A number of partnerships between hospitals and long-term care homes have been established to support staffing and other needs in the homes. These interventions are making a difference and more partnerships are established as assessments continue.

As we adapt to living with COVID-19 and begin to reopen our city, we are working with residents,

community and health care partners and all levels of government to ensure new and expanded measures are in place: more widespread testing of symptomatic people, technology to support case and contact management and universal face covering where physical distancing is not possible.

The actions we have collectively taken to date and will continue to take – will impact our future. Earlier in the year, I referenced several p-words related to what we were just learning was a pandemic - including preparedness, prevention and politeness. I have a few more words to add. Let’s continue to be proactive and pragmatic. We need to help people get back to work and we can work to prevent a resurgence with maintaining physical distancing and wearing non-

medical masks or face coverings when within 2 metres of others. Thank you for your patience, your perseverance and your passion.

Construction Updates

As the weather improves, so too will our infrastructure with the increase in construction activity throughout the ward.

In the short term, we have some emergency culvert renewal works planned for the Fairhurst community between Donnelly Drive and McCordick Road. The two culverts will be replaced between May 19th and June 8th. The first will be on Firethorn Court while the second, which will necessitate a road closure, will occur on Fairhurst Drive beginning May 25th.

Furthermore, the Church Street Bridge will be rehabilitated this summer, beginning the second week of June, likely. This will require a closure of the bridge. For more information on that specific project, you can visit www.rideaugoulbourn. ca/churchstreetbridge.

The Barnsdale/Prince of Wales Drive roundabout will be constructed this summer as well but has not yet been awarded and expect stormwater drainage improvement on Fourth Line Road, near Community Way later this summer.

This has been a tremendous effort by the community to ‘flatten the curve’. As the season progresses, we do need to keep in mind there are other infections spread by black-legged ticks to be mindful of and ensure we protect ourselves and family members.

If you live adjacent to outdoor areas suitable for ticks, for example, wooded areas or areas with tall grasses, or you visit these areas once permissible from COVID-19 restrictions, you need to be aware of the risk of Lyme disease. As you may have heard through media reports, populations of blacklegged ticks that carry Lyme disease

are growing and expanding into new areas.

This means that the risk of contracting Lyme disease is on the rise across Canada.

Ottawa is considered an at-risk location for ticks that may carry Lyme disease. Tall grasses, bushy, wooded and forested areas are habitats favoured by ticks. The blacklegged tick that is known to carry the bacterium causing Lyme disease is present in the Ottawa area, across Eastern Ontario, and the Outaouais region of Quebec.

duce Lyme disease-related health risks in our community. OPH has seen an increase in the number of cases of Lyme disease reported in the Ottawa area over time, as well as an increase in the number of cases of Lyme disease likely acquired in the Ottawa area.

Do your best to stay on cleared paths, but if your trek brings you into long grass or forests, apply insect repellant and tuck your pants into your socks. Most importantly, perform a “full body” check on yourself, your children and your pets for ticks. Pay care-

ful attention around toes, knees, groin, armpits and scalp. If you do find a tick on your skin, carefully remove it following instructions available at ottawapublichealth.ca/ lyme.

Situations when you should immediately contact your family physician include: flu-like symptoms following a mosquito or tick bite; a bull’s eye type rash after a tick bite; and when a tick has been attached for 24 hours or more, a tick looks partially or fully engorged, or if you are unsure the length of time the tick has been at-

tached. While there are no antiviral treatments available for COVID-19, fortunately Lyme disease is treatable with antibiotics. However, prevention is the best approach with these, as with all, infectious diseases.

The true lessons of working from home during COVID-19 What vast amounts of alone time can do, if you’re lucky, is make you think about others

Apparently, the pandemic that’s gripping the world is also making many of us more productive.

I know this because 14 marketing companies (I counted) have sent me emails over the past week telling me that while selfisolation might be lonely, it’s actually good for business. That, naturally, makes it good for me.

In fact, it’s so good that experts wonder why we didn’t think of it before.

Home quarantine means better results in less time.

It also means less overhead on things like cubicles and coffee machines. Mostly, it means housebound employees are more creative and independent than their less fortunate counterparts still toiling under a supervisor’s nose.

I don’t know. Maybe.

But I’ve been a professional journalist since 1983, and I know a thing or two about working remotely.

Enhanced productivity isn’t the first boon that comes to mind. Self-discipline is a quality you train for, regardless of where you work: a busy newsroom or a quiet stairwell.

What vast amounts of alone time can do, if you’re lucky, is make you think about others. Consider Cindy Schultz of Halifax.

Here’s how I wrote about her recently for Atlantic Business Magazine of St. John’s, N.L.: “When COVID-19 drained the juice from some of her dearest clients, the suddenly idle Halifax copywriter, art director and branding specialist came face to face with the question that must surely confront all marketing geniuses at some point in their careers: What’s on TV?” In fact, she told me, “I could have just, you know, laid around and watched Netflix. But what’s the point of that? Why not take those hours and actually help people who are struggling, who are in

trouble? If there’s someone out there that’s hurting and can’t afford any marketing, then I would be happy to assist with that.”

I wonder what the productivity gurus make of that.

But people like Cindy aren’t actually rare. We just don’t hear about them – the local heroes who go about their private business – as much as we do the gamechangers, the brass-ring chasers, the main-chance dreamers and doers whose stories tend to crowd our inboxes.

We don’t, for example, hear enough about this sort of effort, reported recently in Euro News: “As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to sweep the United Kingdom, an initiative has begun to support doctors, nurses and other frontline hospital workers. At the centre of the efforts to rally behind health workers, businesses within the food and hospitality sector are offering up their services to provide sustenance to exhausted caregivers. Fresh Fitness Food is a London-based company that specialises in daily meal deliveries to athletes and gym-goers.

But in the face of the coronavirus crisis, its CEO, Caspar Rose, said they’re offering heavily discounted meals to worn-out medical

workers.”

During this period of self-isolation, when we’re supposed to be “all in it together,” I don’t want to spend even a moment thinking, let alone bragging, about how productive I’ve become. That preoccupation now seems hollow and oddly passé.

“For your own profit

lies in the profit of your neighbor, and his in yours,” somebody ancient and wise said long ago.

This may be our time to reassess the true and durable meaning of productivity, while time is still on our side.

Eagles to host 2021 Ont. Little League Championships

The Ontario Little League Championship, scheduled to be hosted by the East Nepean Eagles in July, 2020, has been postponed. However, the Eagles will be the host for the 2021 Ontario Little League Championships.

The postponement of the tournament was inevitable.

The 2020 Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA was cancelled earlier this month.

Nepean MPP and Minister of Sport, Heritage, Tourism and Culture Lisa MacLeod commented last week that there is not yet a timetable for the return of youth and minor sports in the province.

“Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pan-

demic here in Ontario, the difficult and disappointing decision has been made by the Executive Committee of Little League Ontario to postpone all 2020 Divisional Championship Tournaments (“Provincials”) to 2021,” read a tweet posted by East Nepean Little League.

“It’s unfortunate for the community, because this event was going to be a real boost for the local,” said Councillor Jan Harder. “When it was announced last year that the tournament was going to be here, we were expecting to have our hotels open and that the tournament would bring a lot of revenue into Barrhaven.”

President Bill Magnus confirmed that the Eagles Nest at Ken Ross Park in Barrhaven would be the site of next year’s event.

“We have postponed all 2020 Divisional Championship Tournaments (‘Provincials’) to 2021 and ‘bumped’ subsequent ones by a year,” Magnus stated. “This means that the 2020 Hosts will become the 2021 Hosts, and that the Tournament Draws that were put in place at the 2019 AGM for 2020 will be used for 2021.”

The Ontario umpires who were nominated to participate at 2020 Canadians are to be renominated for the same tournaments in 2021.
