The 176th Richmond Fair has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The Richmond Agricultural Society, who had been planning for the fair for the past year, joined the list of rural Ottawa fairs to pull the plug on the fall event. “The Richmond Fair is an important part of our community, which has brought families and friends together for the past 175 years”, said Dale Greene, the Fair’s outgoing General Manager. “It’s unfortunate it won’t be happening as usual this year.” The RAS determined that COVID-19 has changed the way we live, work and engage with our community. As much as the Richmond Agricultural Society would very much prefer to host the Fair from September 17th to 20th it cannot. The Board of Directors has made the decision

to pause the celebration until COVID-19 has passed and we can gather again. “We would like to thank everyone from our members, volunteers, sponsors, donors, exhibitors, service providers and our elected officials for all that they do. It takes a great community to pull any event together, let alone an annual event that is older than Canada and the oldest Fair in Ottawa,” said Rob Parks, Richmond Agricultural Society President. Denise Crawford, a long-time Fair volunteer and the incoming General Manager who will take over for Mr. Greene stated, “Although we won’t be hosting the Fair our community has come to expect, the Board and its volunteers will monitor the COVID-19 situation over the summer with the hopes of hosting a “Richmond Fair Day” in September or another smaller event if it is safe to do so.”

NEWS FROM QUEEN’S PARK On July 23, the Ontario government announced it is investing over $500 million to build 30 new schools and make upgrades to 15 existing facilities. The province has given Ottawa-Carleton District School Board approval for $14.9 million for Fernbank Elementary School, and $12.5M to build École Élementaire Publique Kanata Sud. The investment will
provide a new, quality learning environment for the students of Stittsville, and Kanata as well as new child care rooms. This project is part of the province’s capital investment program to support students with better learning spaces. “The funding for this new public elementary school is great news for the residents of Stittsville,” said Goldie Ghamari, MPP for Carleton. “MPP Fullerton and I have had several meetings with residents from both our ridings on the need to build new public elementary schools in the community. I’ve shared those concerns directly with the Minister of Education on numerous occasions. I’m thrilled that our government is building two new schools in Stittsville.” “I also want to acknowledge the fact that, at this
time, funding for a new Public High School in Riverside South was not approved at this stage,” said MPP Ghamari. “I’ve spoken extensively with the Minister about the need for a public high school in the area, and he is aware of the petition that I submitted directly to his office. I look forward to continuing to work with Riverside South Residents as well as local school board trustees to ensure that the proposed Public High School in Riverside South becomes the new top capital priority for the OCDSB.” Ontario’s investment in new and updated schools will create the foundation for a modern learning environment for hundreds of students across the province. This investment will also generate nearly 900 new licensed child care spaces. “From modernizing our
curriculum to revitalizing our classrooms and their facilities, we are investing in our students and giving them every tool to achieve their full potential,” said Education Minister Stephen Lecce. “Our financing of the new Fernbank Elementary School and École Élementaire Publique Kanata Sud further demonstrates our government’s historic investment in Ontario’s schools and our overall commitment to supporting our students and families.” The new Fernbank Elementary School will be located in Stittsville, Ontario. Highlights of the new school construction include: • 628 elementary student spaces; • 39 new licensed child care spaces; and • 2 new child care rooms. Messenger honoured with five OCNA provincial newspaper awards The Manotick Messenger had one of its best years ever as the Ontario Community Newspaper Association held its 2019 Better Newspapers Competition Awards Gala online Friday. The annual gala was originally to take place in April in Vaughn, Ontario, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Messenger won awards for being a topthree finalist in five categories – the most among Eastern Ontario community newspapers. There are more than 200 OCNA member newspapers in Ontario. “It’s great for us and for the entire community to be recognized by our peers throughout the
province,” said Messenger publisher and editor Jeff Morris. “The Messenger exists solely because of the support we get from local businesses who advertise with us and from the people in the area who invite us to be a part of their lives as a news and entertainment source. We are extremely grateful and we want to share these accolades with all of South Carleton. A story written by Morris on the Kraft family won third place in the province for Best Feature Story. In January, 2019, Kielli Kraft donated a kidney to her mother, Wendy, whose life was at risk if she did not receive a transplant. The donation of the kidney was made as a Christmas
gift. Wendy is a former employee of the Manotick LCBO, and fell ill shortly after retiring. “The gesture of what Kielli did for her mom was one of the most beautiful and inspirational gestures I have ever seen in this community,” Morris said. “It was an honour to be able to tell their story.” In addition to running the feature, the Messenger helped establish and promote a GoFundMe page for the family. Kielli was working a retail
job on Merivale Road and had no benefits. In order to donate her kidney and save her mom’s life, she had to take four months off work for the preparation, the surgery and her recovery. The GoFundMe page raised the equivalent of four months of her salary, so she was able to pay her rent, her bills, and buy food while she was recovering. The Messenger also earned a second place award for Best Editorial and a second place award
for Best Sports Photo. “The sports photo award will be hard to win next year,” commented Morris jokingly. “We haven’t had sports in months.” The From the Other Side column that runs on page 6 earned two awards. Morris was second to John Stewart of the Mississauga News as Ontario’s Columnist of the Year, and he was third to James Culic of Niagara This Week and Steve Galea of the Haliburton County Echo for Humour Columnist of the

At a time when small business are struggling, this will hit many of the small local family owned businesses that provide services and supplies for the Richmond Fair”. At the City’s virtual Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee meeting
Thursday, the Rural Affairs Office announced it would provide $15,000 to each of the agriculture committees operating the local fairs. The money would come from the Rural Affairs Office Budget. The funds would help the various agricultural committees to fund programming that runs throughout the years and is funded by revenue from the fairs. “The money raised at these fairs is re-invested into the community,” said
Geraldine Wildman of Ottawa’s Rural Affairs office. “The cancellation of these fairs will have an impact on rural communities.” Wildman said that last year’s Richmond Fair drew 45,000 people and visitors spent $4 million over four days. She added that people throughout the region look forward to the fairs and are a highlight of the year. Each year, the Richmond Fair runs the third weekend in September.

NAC violinist gives an evening of music in Manotick By Krysia Kurylowicz COVID-19 has brought about big changes in our world. We are all missing the human contact innate to us as a species. It is difficult for artists who can no longer share their talents with audiences. For those who love listening, it may be a long time before we can all gather in a theatre to watch live performances of any kind. Coming from a musical family, Elaine Klimasko has been playing the violin since the age of three. As the youngest member ever to join at 19 years of age, she has been performing professionally with the NAC Orchestra in Ottawa for over
50 years. Her passion for music and her determination to work through any obstacle, has enabled her to delight audiences all over the world. The joy Elaine feels for her music has been passed on to son Michael Blais who is an accomplished cellist in his own right. Both freely share by teaching and inspiring others to join them in the world of strings. On Tuesday July 21, some lucky residents of Manotick were treated to an amazing evening of music. Elaine and Micheal put together a delightful program during a live porch concert, performed for an appreciative audience
of neighbours and friends. We experienced an array of sound ranging from small children playing Twinkle Twinkle to the finale featuring Elaine and Micheal playing together. Fingers were flying with lightening speed though arpeggios and impossible runs. Not many people can play with such talent, feeling and amazing skill. Thank you, Elaine, and Michael, for sharing something so rare and moving. Elaine has promised a repeat performance in a couple of weeks. The residents of Manotick are so fortunate to have such kind and talented people in our midst.

It’s not what happens, it’s how you deal with it Everyone looking back on life; years of marriage, raising children, surviving health, work and financial problems will have a different perspective on those years. We tried to keep our spirits up no matter how bad the crisis appeared to be. I survived to write this and

no matter what will confront me in the future, I will sur-
vive and so will you. I believe that if we are upbeat and happy, our everyday lives will reflect those emotions. I choose to view the world in a positive way, because I have learned that it is not always the things that happen, but how they are
dealt with, that makes a difference. There is a great deal of beauty in the world, and I choose to see that and expect the very best. Counter every negative thought with a positive one. In this day of perhaps waiting for medical treatment and saying, “I hate waiting
so long to see the doctor”, counter that thought by saying “I’m thankful that I live in a country that has available doctors”. Stay optimistic by looking at how fortunate we are to have the things we do have. We see disasters on television every day; we
hear of friends who have lost loved ones in other parts of the world. Difficult times may be a step forward towards something good. Looking at the whole picture in retrospect helps us to realize life is good, no matter what the present circumstance.

Coronavirus is this summer’s unwanted party guest We’re heading into the last week of July in the summer of the Pandemic. It’s been a hot one, which has made it challenging for a lot of people to remember that this can’t be just like any other summer. The Coronavirus is the unwanted party guest; in the large happy gatherings so many people are enjoying, the virus is finding new hosts, those not following physical distancing guidelines, let alone wearing masks. New cases are on the rise. We live in a democracy. Ottawa Police aren’t going to throw people in jail for not adhering to bylaws. But when it’s a public health issue, what can we do to ensure we all take some responsibility to protect others and ourselves? No one wants to think that bars and restaurants might
have to close again. Every business is working hard to ensure their customer’s safety and their economic viability. I am asking that we help them out. Be mindful of physical distancing and limit the number of people at gatherings. We all must share the responsibility. Remember, we are still in this together, and it will take everyone to ensure that our businesses stay open and our friends and family stay safe. The Rideau Valley Conservation (RVCA) forestry team successfully planted 255,000 trees this spring, bringing the conservation authority’s overall tree planting total to an impressive 6.6 million. Trees were planted in partnership with private and public landowners on marginal, empty or idle fields across the watershed. Native seedlings including birch, bur oak, cedar, red maple, white pine and white spruce took root over several weeks this spring. “Thank you to our watershed landowners for working with us through this unique planting season,” said Scott Muldoon, RVCA Forestry Program Manager. “With another successful tree planting season complete, we are now looking ahead to next year.” Staff are looking for landowners wishing to reforest their retired farm fields or otherwise empty
and idle lands. The RVCA’s program is a low-cost, full-service program that includes free site visits, custom planting plans, site preparation, tree planting, follow-up assessments and maintenance to give the seedlings the best chance of survival. All of this is available for only $0.15 per tree, or $120 an acre. “This program offers landowners easy and affordable tree planting services while helping us meet our larger watershed management goals,” said Muldoon. The forestry team is booking site visits this summer to plan for the 2021 spring planting season. The planting area must be at least one acre in size, suitable for tree planting and the landowner must be willing to plant 1,000 trees or more. Typical costs are $0.15/ tree ($120/acre). The RVCA and its planting partners cover all other costs.
Planting partners including the City of Ottawa’s Green Acres program, Forests Ontario, Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority, Hulse, Playfair and McGarry Funeral Homes, One Tree Planted, Stingray LiVE 88.5 and the Rideau Valley Conservation Foundation contribute to the forestry program to keep costs low for landowners. RVCA’s reforestation program is a great way for landowners to improve their property. Tree planting is also one of the most practical ways to take care of our watershed and the wider environment.
