MPB first elementary school in Ontario to close due to COVID-19 By Charlie Senack

Just weeks after welcoming students back to the classroom, multiple schools in Barrhaven are reporting active cases of COVID-19. Monsignor Paul Baxter Elementary School in Barrhaven has confirmed at least two staff members and two students have tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, the school has closed for at least the next two weeks. The Barrhaven Independent has obtained a copy of a letter sent to parents sharing the news. “Since the vast majority of our students and staff are healthy, we want students to continue to learn at home,” wrote the schools principal, Mark Kennedy, who adds learning will take place on Hapara workspace in the interim.

“This will ensure that all your children continue to learn,” Kennedy adds. “I will be in touch later this week with more updates about teaching and learning while our schools are closed.” Kennedy says while all the cases are in the primary level, Ottawa Public Health has sent all students and staff home as a precaution. An earlier email to parents says the COVID-19 outbreak began in the school’s kindergarten class. There are currently at least 48 schools in Ottawa with at least one COVID-19 case. The Ottawa Catholic School Board has confirmed they have closed at least four classrooms due to confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, including two classrooms at St. Leonard Elementary School in Manotick.
