bhdp BHDP Architecture was established in 1937 by Cyrus Baxter, in Cincinnati, Ohio. By 1960 he had hired Jack Hodell, Jim Donnelly, and Jim Preston, who also became founders of the BHDP of today.

Designing for the modern workplace is a strong emphasis for BHDP with their slogan “design for people.� The firm has developed over the years from a small firm to a firm of over one hundred people, in three locations: Cincinnati (OH), Columbus (OH), and Raleigh (NC). www.bhdp.com

workplace INFORMED DESIGN Data was gathered in the field and recorded in a spreadsheet. Then this information was used in Revit to map the existing space usage, so that the design would be shaped by the information.

madison PLACE COFFEE LAB The original building has been a hardware store in Madison Place in Cincinnati, Ohio, since its construction in 1930. It was recently purchased with the intention of making this a coffee shop, with office space on the upper level. There is an additional warehouse behind the original building that was a part of the purchase and would conceivably be used as a base of operations for a landscaping company and a wood shop.

This project is still on going, and so far a complete documentation of the existing building has been accomplished, and the demolition of interior partitions on the upper floor have begun.

perform 2015 The 3 green bars building derives from the intent to create a beautiful and highly energy efficient mixed-use complex.

Portland is well known for its tradition in landscaping and urban design, which motivates the project to celebrate the public space. In our analysis, we found that Sandy Boulevard is a strong urban force that should be reflected in the project; hence the main public space is designed to engage this axis.

To maximize daylight in our living spaces, increase the passive heat gain for our climate, and account for a highly replicable module; the building was shaped as a thin bar oriented to the south and ruled by a 24x36 foot grid. The north side is primarily used as a circulation corridor, which also serves as a buffer zone that reduces the heat loss.

LBC COURTYARD Living Building Challenge focuses heavily on achieving net zero energy, water, and waste. It also focuses heavily on designed that is inspired by nature and the human interaction with the natural world. Therefore inspiration was drawn from crystals, water, wind and poetry.

This project was a competition hosted by YR&G in Chicago. The challenge was to take a vacant city block and to propose a sustainable and poetic solution.

In my investigation, It was important to the project to provide an urban edge while creating some new and inspiring.

From studying microscopic silver crystals, and observing rock patterns formed by erosion, the formal language was realized as a synthesis of these. The site circulation creates two major pathways, intersecting at a courtyard, allowing for a strong central focus.

columbus ATHENAEUM The Columbus Athenaeum is located in the architecturally significant city of Columbus, Indiana. Because of the great number of modern works, and because this is a museum of the architecture of Columbus, the design needed to boast a certain arrogance that paid homage to innovative works by the great modernists.

This is achieved primarily through the auditorium, which lifts up from the ground to take a sculptural gesture, and sweep into the building to provide an entry. This sweep ripples throughout the rest of the building facade and roof, which use a similar language of angled planes. These planes allow for unique lighting situations within the museum as well as gives the building a bold facade.

HIGH RISE Envision Elgin as the first high rise building launches a new series of construction to truly make this the “city in the suburbs.” This high rise will reclaim a parking lot, which historically served as the center of commerce. The tower offers retail space along the ground allow for commerce to return to the center of the city.

A plaza space opens up on the south to allow space for public events, most notable Elgin’s farmer’s market, which currently uses this lot. Patterns of color speckle the building to remember the vibrancy of Elgin’s history and to inspire the future tone of the city.

SChool Of EDUCATION The new School of Education Building Judson for University aims to integrate work and play by creating engaging and collaborative learning environments and casual meeting places. To achieve this it was important to create a connection to the existing building. The creation of the courtyard reinforces the concept of creating meeting places and allows for the south sun to reach Lindner Tower.

LIBRARY A library is comprised of three concepts: the container, collection, and communal node. It must be a container for both the books and the people. This ties in with the second concept, which is the library as a collection. Finally, in its third concept the library is a place for the community.

The building is guided by an axis, made strong by a beam that pokes through and accentuates spaces along the axis.

Bars puncture the main corridor, creating spaces that allow for decision amidst a linear process. The bars are extrusions of tangent lines across the contour; the final bar is in the water, at a wider angle to celebrate the power of the river.

design/build shelter World Vision sponsored a competition for a disaster relief shelter. The design of this shelter has an emphasis is on how the inhabitant would feel inside. The design efforts of the team focused on the idea that a community will be able to emotionally recover faster if the feeling of displacement can be minimized.

The structure of the shelter is composed of triangulated components. By basing the design around this shape, spaces created feel structurally stable.
