Around the world, Philadanco is celebrated for its innovation, creativity, artistic integrity, and superbly trained dancers. The company’s repertoire has included the works of worldrenowned choreographers such as Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (Urban Bush Women), Ron K. Brown (Evidence), and, most recently, Rennie Harris (Rennie Harris Puremovement). The Performance Series will include Harris’s new ballet, Wake Up, in which the dancers trade their slippers for sneakers. This festive sortie into the birth and evolution of hip-hop also serves as a reminder to wake up to life before it is gone.

Led by Oscar-winning composer Yuval Ron (music for West Bank Story), this ensemble weaves the music and dance of opposing ethnic and religious groups in the Middle East into an inspiring and surprisingly harmonious evening. How To Lose A Mountain explores the relationships between us and our “stuff” while illuminating the journey from origin to consumption. Join the Arts Center in welcoming back choreographer Cassie Meador and Dance Exchange as we proudly present our first co-commissioned dance work.

That’s right, Festive Fridays moves to Saturday for a sensational season opener!

Begin the evening with awesome storytelling during the Ex Fabula Storytelling Spectacular (see Footlights, page 5); then beginning at 9:00 p.m., two fantastic bands will hit the stage in true Festive Fridays style. Count This Penny, an Appalachian pop band based in Madison by way of East Tennessee, has appeared on Prairie Home Companion, Wisconsin Public Radio, and Wisconsin Public Television. Its warm harmonies and moving lyrics create a front-porch sound that invites you to pull up a chair and hum along. But don’t get too cozy! Fueled on pickled eggs, local favorite Beef Tea String Band will bring on some lively bluegrass (throwing in a few Irish mixes for good measure). You will be kicking up your heels in no time! This event is open to all ages.

Put on the platform shoes, don’t forget the glitter (lots of glitter), and feel the funk.

Wisconsin’s disco superstars will have you getting “down wit da boogie” in no time, especially as they make it a Halloween disco night. That’s right; costumes are desirable.

This swamp rock foursome has opened for The Doobie Brothers, Buckwheat Zydeco, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Terrance Simien— just to name a few names! Blending roots rock, polka, and zydeco, this crowd-pleasing band heats up the dance floor in no time.

Madison Magazine calls them, “Rare jewels in the otherwise cookie-cutter world of country music.” The Dang-Its shift seamlessly from soulful ballads to gritty country songs to jazzy, Western-swing jump tunes.

SWING-O-MATICS

Doors open at 6:15 p.m. for all but the October event. October’s Festive Friday is open to all ages; attendees to all others must be 21 or older.

Fusing the styles of great stars such as Frank Sinatra, Cab Calloway, Louie Prima, and Count Basie, these guys channel the swingin’ spirit of the ‘40s and ‘50s. It is a cool-cat sound for a copacetic, good time.

Their mission is simple: to play the best original salsa. This ten-piece band features explosive percussion, first-class vocals, and an amazing horn section that heats up the night and adds just the right spice to this Festive Friday!
