The Jean Frazier Leadership Institute is a formal leadership development program for students and the first and only of its kind in Louisville. JFLI inspires students to discover the leader within themselves and empowers them to share their leadership with the world.

• JFLI supports the mission of Sacred Heart Schools by developing students, faculty, and staff to become empowered leaders and promoting a culture of servant leadership.

• JFLI teaches leadership development through integrated curriculum across four programming pillars of leadership, service, financial literacy, and global scholars.

• JFLI, with the support of community and alumni partners, provides authentic, experiential, and transformational experiences that allow students to practice their leadership skills in real-world settings.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED FOR ALL SHA STUDENTS

SOPHOMORE FRESHMAN Freshman Design Seminar • Year-long course focused on social emotional learning, goal-setting, study skills, introduction to leadership and problem solving using the IB Design Cycle House of Shine • Personality exploration through Myers-Briggs relating to potential college and career pathways Navigation Mentor Program • Monthly small group meetings with Junior and Senior mentors to help the transition to high school, build community, and develop communication and team-building skills

Sophomore Leadership Seminar • Year-long course focused on project management, career exploration, resumebuilding, introduction to entrepreneurship, SEL, presentation and communication skills, and leadership styles • Culminates in a six-month-long, student-directed Personal Project House of Shine • Identification of strengths, hobbies, interests & irritants, needs, and experiences leading to their point of intersection that ignites leadership potential

SELF DISCOVERY

SENIOR JUNIOR College and Career Programming • Programming including O*NET career inventory using the Holland Codes to discover career and college major interests Career Day • Day-long career day including a keynote speaker, women’s leadership workshop, career fair, and networking with more than 60 presenters and career planning workshops House of Shine • Programming to identify personal values and how to use these in making life choices

College and Career Programming • Day-long career day including a keynote speaker, women’s leadership workshop, career fair, and networking with more than 60 presenters and career planning workshops Financial Literacy • Introduction to financial literacy for college in the College 101 Program House of Shine • Seniors reflect and create a Life Map to articulate their leadership story to others

Lead and Learn Pathways Lead and Learn curricular pathways are available to all juniors and seniors who choose at least three elective courses in a particular career focused area while participating in leadership coursework and an authentic leadership experience. Pathways include Medical Science, Law & Public Policy, and Business.

Personal Finance Course Graduation requirement for the Class of 2026 and beyond. Currently offered as an elective course during the school year and summer online.

EXPERIENCE & APPLICATION

ADDITIONAL JFLI PROGRAMMING AVAILABLE TO ALL STUDENTS FRAZIER FELLOWS LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATE – THREE-YEAR LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATE PROGRAM • Fellows commit to participating in all JFLI programs in addition to quarterly assignments and discussions • Fellows design and complete a 40-hour self-directed authentic leadership experience or project in the form of an Internship, Service initiative, or community impact group • The program culminates with a Capstone presentation before a faculty and community panel.

CHARLES KANE FAMILY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM • Juniors and seniors complete a 40 or 80-hour internship experience and an electronic blog, research, reflection, and a final capstone presentation • 40 participants in the summer of 2023 internship program • 12 participants in the fall of 2023 pilot in-school internship elective class Students serve in Sports Marketing, Information Technology, Institutional Advancement, Business Office and the Campus Store.

DR. CYNTHIA CRABTREE FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAM Personal Finance course graduation requirement beginning with the Class of 2026 The Heart Tank JFLI sponsors an annual entrepreneurship competition for SHA students.

LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON

JFLI hosts a Leadership Luncheon in collaboration with the SHA Alumnae Office, featuring a keynote speaker and the opportunity for students to network with alumnae and friends of SHS and build potential mentorships.

PRESENTING YOURSELF WORKSHOP This 6-hour workshop prepares students to present their best selves by learning about professional etiquette, written and oral communication skills, assertiveness, and character strengths. The program culminates in a mock interview.

GUEST SPEAKER AND CAREER LUNCH AND LEARN NETWORKING SERIES Through these two programs, JFLI brings experts in their fields to exchange knowledge, experience, and perspectives.

In 2022-23, 18 guest speakers visited SHA, providing networking opportunities for students, including Lucy Helm, retired Executive VP and Chief Partner Officer at Starbucks, and Broadway Star Sandra Joseph, who also provided a master class for students Lunch and Learn sessions offer juniors and seniors a monthly opportunity to learn more in-depth about a specific career field from a panel of alumnae and friends of SHS.
