Welcome to the first week of summer camp. We are looking forward to an exciting week of meeting campers and making friends. Each week we will have a theme and character trait for the week. The counselors will be looking for campers who display the character trait and we will recognize those campers on Friday. Theme: “Getting to know you�

On Tuesday we will be going to Mainstay Farms we will be leaving at 9:00 and returning at 2:00. Your child will need to wear their camp t shirt and bring their lunch and water bottle

Camp time is from 7am-6pm. There is a late fee if you pick up your child after 6pm, if you know you are running late please contact the front desk. If you need to get in touch with your child during the day, please call the front desk.

Hi! My name is Tami Martin and I am very excited to be the Camp Director for the 2018 Summer Fun Camp at The Brick. I moved to Burleson in August and I love this community, people and town. I taught elementary PE for ten years in Spring TX and hope to continue in BISD. I honestly love kids and enjoy watching them grow and experience new activities. We are going to have a blast this summer and develop some new skills in the process. I look forward to meeting all the new campers and parents before camp begins.

My name is Daniel Shafer, I am a former Tarleton State University student where I received my Bachelor of Science in Fitness Management and Master of Education in Kinesiology. After graduation from college I worked for the City of Fort Worth for 3 years as the Recreation Programmer. As the programmer I oversaw day to day operations, ran after-school programs, school break camps and summer camp. My goal for summer camp this year is to create an atmosphere where the kids are active, they have fun, and gain new friendships.

I’ve been here for a little over 4 years now and I’ve been involved with the Summer Fun Camp the last 2 years. Before working at the BRiCk, I was employed with Burleson ISD for 5 years and worked for the special education department. My goal is to create a fun and memorable summer for our campers and instill in them a lifelong love of physical indoor and outdoor activities.

Camp Need to Knows Our goal is to provide a safe and fun environment for school age children. The children will be participating in various recreational activities. Please feel free to see us, call us, email us, at any time about any question or concern you may have. We are here for your “camper” and you!

SUMMER 2018 CAMP FYI’S! 

We will be offering 150 camper spots per week. We will separate the campers into 3 groups, younger, middle, and older.



Our sign in / sign out procedures have changed. We will have a centralized sign in table in the lobby, where you will sign in / sign out your child.



Campers will swim 3 out of 5 days of the week. No swimming on Monday’s or field trip days.



Full payment per week is required to reserve your child’s spot in camp. Camp may be full if you wait till the week of to register so we highly encourage parents enroll in advance.

Parent Information & Meet the Counselor’s Night! Wednesday, May 30th at 7pm Involvement Kids love interaction! Our Staff will constantly be involved with the children. We expect and will highly encourage your child to participate in all activities.

Emergency Procedures Staff will always be prepared for an emergency. They will keep a first aid pack and important numbers with them at all times and have proper communications with EMS if needed. If something should arise, please contact our main desk at 817-426-9104.

PICTURES We will be taking some pictures for city pamphlets and brochures for future marketing and special projects. Please notify us in writing if you wish for us not to use your child’s photo in future publications.

DROP OFF & PICK UP Drop off begins at 7:00 am; the first scheduled activity begins at 9:00 am. Pick up generally begins at 5:00 pm and concludes at 6:00 pm. We prefer to have all campers at the BRICK by 8:30 to go over the

We will be asking you to provide proper ID when picking up your child each night. Please be prepared to present your ID.

SUNSCREEN POLICY Campers need to bring their own sunscreen, if asked; the counselor may assist if needed. The older groups will rotate in the indoor pool and outdoor pool, please send your child with Spray On sunscreen only. We will be outside mainly in the mornings and we also have a big gym to use on the hot days.

SWIMMING The campers will be swimming on a daily basis (except for Mondays & Field Trip Days). Please have your child(ren) bring swimwear, towel, and a bag to take home the wet items. If the children do not want to swim, steps will be taken to see why and what may be done in order to get them into the water. Please make sure your child has a proper swimsuit, (no cut-offs, gym shorts, or other related non-swimming wear). The Outdoor Pool will be utilized by the two older groups. Please send them with Spray Sunscreen with their name on the bottle!

FIELD TRIPS We are scheduled to go 10 field trip this year. Dan Dipert Bus Company provides the transportation for our field trips. Campers should wear the provided camp T-shirt on all field trip days. You will also receive a note the day before field trips with our agenda, important phone numbers, or any other special things we may need to inform you about for the field trip.

ALLERGIES Please alert us of any peanut allergies, special needs or accommodations. Please give all medication to Camp Staff. (Exception is breathing inhaler which should be kept close to your child, but the Staff should be notified!)

VALUABLES It’s important to only send the essentials to camp with your child. All belongings such as towels, lunch boxes, clothes, and so on, should be clearly labeled. We cannot be responsible for those items or any other personal items such as toys, hand-held games, cd players, ipod, etc.

LUNCHES & SNACKS Lunch is around 11:00am daily. We provide a snack in the afternoon. Children will not be allowed to go to the vending machines during any part of the day. Campers will need to bring a non-refrigerated lunch daily. A water bottle is recommended daily.

CLOTHING Tennis Shoes are required at all times to participate in all camp activities. Comfortable clothing appropriate for rock climbing, gym games, and field trips are recommended. All belongings need to be labeled with the child’s first and last name (including towel, lunch box, backpack, etc.)

BEHAVIOR POLICY If a child starts to misbehave, we will intervene and make the appropriate accommodations to solve the problem. Not all situations are the same, but we will do our best to be consistent as much as possible.

1st offense- The child will be given a verbal warning.

2nd offense- The child will be removed from the situation, spoken to, returned to group and the situation is noted on the daily log.

3rd offense- The child will be removed from the situation, spoken to, returned to group, noted on the daily log and parents informed at the end of that day.

4th offense- The child will be removed from the situation, sent to the Administrative Offices, parents will be notified at that time, and a decision will be made with help from the parents. *Depending on the severity of the problem, these steps may not necessarily always happen in this order.

MEDICATION / ILLNESS POLICY Administering of prescription medicine to children during camp hours shall be restricted to necessary medication that cannot be given on an alternate schedule.

Prescription medicine should have a label affixed by a pharmacy or physician showing the following: 1.

All medications will be kept in a locked bag with the camp. Children must be able to take the medication by themselves. Staff will only supervise as child administers medicine. Aspirin will not be given out to the children. If the above steps are not followed, the medication will not be given and we will contact the parents at that time. All illnesses or injuries, no matter how big or small, will be treated as emergencies if brought to the staff’s attention. If your child should become ill or has a serious injury while at camp, you will be notified. Please do not send your child to camp if he or she is ill. If your child will not be present because of an illness, please leave a message at the front desk at 817-426-9104.

BRiCk Summer Fun Camp ~ 2018  RECREATION AND LIFELONG LEARNING DEPARTMENT Youth Programs - Standards of Care

I. GENERAL INFORMATION/ADMINISTRATION a. Purpose: To provide basic childcare regulations for recreation activities operated by the Burleson Recreation and Lifelong Learning Department. This will allow the department to qualify for exemption from requirements of the Texas Human Resources Code. The child care program offered by the department of recreation and lifelong learning department is not licensed by the State of Texas. These standards of care are adopted by city ordinance pursuant to Section 42.041(b)(14) of the Texas Human Resources Code. b. Implementation: Oversight of any youth service programs will be the responsibility of the Recreation and Lifelong Learning Department. The Recreation Manager, Recreation Supervisors, Aquatics Supervisor and Recreation Coordinators will supervise overall program components while Day Camp Attendants will provide direct on-site administration. c. Programs: These standards and regulations apply to seven on-going youth programs: 

e. Day Camp Objectives 1. To offer a program wide in scope and varied in activities of different recreational activities: sports, games, arts and crafts, education, drama, special events, field trips, etc 2. To provide a pleasant and memorable experience in a loving atmosphere.

3. To provide a safe environment always promoting good health and welfare for all.

4. To teach children how to spend their leisure time wisely, in an effort to meet several needs: emotional, physical and social. f.

Exemption Status: Once an exempt status is established, the Licensing Division will not monitor the recreational program. The Licensing Division will be responsible for investigating complaints of unlicensed childcare and for referring other complaints to the municipal authorities or, in the case of abuse/neglect allegation, to the Burleson Police Department.

g. Standards of Care Review Standards will be reviewed annually and approved by the City Council after a public hearing is held to adopt an ordinance regarding section 42.041(b)(14) of the Human Resources Code. h. Child Care Licensing will not regulate these programs nor be involved in any complaint investigation related to the program. The BRiCk is not a day care facility licensed by the state. i.

Any parent, visitor or staff may register a complaint by calling the Burleson Recreation Center at 817-426-9104, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

II. STAFFING a. Day Camp Attendant - Job Description and Essential Job Functions Essential Job Functions: Individual is responsible for supervising, instructing, leading, and maintaining a safe atmosphere in which campers may enjoy various recreational activities in a pleasant environment. Individual will keep attendance and inventory records, follow daily instructional schedule with the ability to improvise when needed, and maintain a clean & organized camp. Individual must possess strong conflict resolution skills, uphold discipline and order, be highly motivated self-starters and have the basic understanding of various recreational activities. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

BRiCk Summer Fun Camp ~ 2018  Minimum age 18. Must reflect a positive & professional attitude. Knowledge of appropriate activities for children 5 – 13 years old. Must be able to deal with a diverse group of people in a consistent, fair and approachable manner. Must have the ability to communicate effectively in an authoritative and professional manner. Must be able to swim. Work requires good physical condition, including the functions of standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, reaching, swimming, and ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds, 100 pounds with assistance. Must be able to pass a criminal background check. Will be required to obtain First Aid, Child & Adult CPR/AED, Blood Born Pathogens, and Climbing Wall certifications (Burleson Recreation Center will provide training). b. Criminal Background Checks Criminal background checks will be conducted on prospective Day Camp employees. Applicants may be disqualified if they have a job related criminal conviction. c. A prospective employee will be subject to a drug test prior to hiring. Positive drug results may exclude an applicant from employment. d. Staffing Ratios The staff ratio will be one staff member per 13 children, ages 5-13.

III. FACILITY STANDARDS a. Emergency evacuation and participant relocation plans will be posted at each facility. b. Program employees will inspect sites frequently for any sanitation or safety concerns. Those concerns should be passed on to the Recreation Manager. c. Each camp must have a fully stocked first aid kit. This shall be checked and stocked on a weekly basis by the Recreation Manager or Recreation Supervisor. It shall include bandages, first aid cream, rubber gloves, Neosporin, alcohol wipes, hot/cold packs, gauze, syrup of Ipecac, tweezers and scissors. d. In a situation where evacuation is necessary, the first priority of staff is to make sure all participants are in a safe location. e. Program sites will be inspected annually by the Fire Marshall. The Recreation Manager is responsible for compliance with Fire Marshall’s directives. f.

The recommended number of fire extinguishers shall be inspected quarterly and available and “primed” for use.

g. Fire drills should be conducted once a month during the summer camp. h. Medication will only be administered with written parental consent. Prescription medications shall be left with staff in their original container, labeled with the child’s name, date, directions

BRiCk Summer Fun Camp ~ 2018  and physician’s name. Medication shall be dispensed only as stated on the bottle, and not past the expiration date. i.

Non-prescription medicine with the child’s name and date on the medication may be brought if in the original container. Non-prescription medication will only be administered with written parental consent.

j.

Each indoor site shall have adequate indoor toilets and lavatories located such that children can use them independently and program staff can supervise as needed.

k. All participants must wear appropriate footwear daily. Sandals and “flip flops” will be allowed only in swimming pool areas.

IV. SERVICE STANDARDS - Day Camp Staff This information will be provided to each staff as a part of the day camp manual: a. Camp staff shirts, shorts and appropriate footwear are to be worn at all times. b. City issued employee ID’s should be worn and clearly visible. c. Camp participants and parents will be treated with respect at all times. d. Camp staff will take it upon themselves to resolve complaints. Do not refer a customer to another staff person. If you are unable to resolve the complaint on the spot, take the customer’s name and phone number, investigate complaint resolution and then follow up with the customer. e. Camp staff will keep parents continuously informed of camp activities. A weekly schedule will be distributed the week prior to session and extra copies will be kept with the sign in log daily. f.

Camp staff will note details of behavior of campers (accomplishments, discipline problems, general activities, etc.) and update parents as much as possible.

g. Camp staff will monitor the sign in/out log at all times. h. Camp staff shall clean rooms after each activity. Floors will be swept or vacuumed, chairs stacked, mirrors cleaned, and supplies put away. This is extremely important due to the fact that rooms are used throughout the day by other groups. i.

Camp staff will dedicate their on-duty time to campers and/or parents to ensure a meaningful and pleasant experience.

j.

Prior to working with campers, camp staff will check all messages for the day.

V. OPERATIONAL ISSUES

BRiCk Summer Fun Camp ~ 2018  a. Emergency Phone numbers are kept at the front desk of the Recreation Center, as well as with the Recreation Coordinators on field trips. Those numbers include fire, police and ambulance services. b. A Day Camp manual is given to every Recreation Coordinator and Day Camp Attendant. The manual addresses the following items: 1. Discipline Issues 2. City Rules and Regulations 3. Forms that must be filled out 4. Service Standards 5. Ways to interact with children Additional manuals will be located at each site for access by any staff member. c. Sign in-sign out sheets will be used every day. Only adults listed on sign-in/out release will be allowed to pick up children. An authorized person must enter the building, present appropriate identification and sign the sheet in order for staff to release the child. d. Emergency evacuation and relocation plans will be posted at each facility. e. Parents will be notified regarding planned field trips and provided the required release forms. f.

Enrollment information will be kept and maintained on each child and shall include: 1. Child’s name, birth date, home address, home telephone number, physician’s phone number and phone numbers where parents may be reached during the day.

2. Name, driver’s license number and telephone numbers of persons to whom the child can be released.

3. Field trip release form as needed.

4. Liability waiver.

5. Parental consent to administer medication, medical information and release on participant.

g. Staff shall immediately notify the parent or other person authorized by the parent when the child is injured or has been involved in any situation that placed the child at risk.

Staff shall notify parents or authorized persons of children in the facility when there is an outbreak of a communicable disease in the facility that is required to be reported to the County Department of Health. Staff must notify parents of children in a group when there is an outbreak of lice or other infestation in the group.

i.

Discipline: 1. Discipline and guidance of children must be consistent and based on an understanding of individual needs and development.

2. There shall be no harsh, cruel, or unusual treatment. 

Corporal punishment in any form will not be tolerated.



Children shall not be shaken, bit, hit or have anything put in or on their mouth as punishment.



Children shall not be humiliated, yelled at or rejected.



Children shall not be subjected to abusive or profane language.



Punishment shall not be associated with food.



Staff may use brief, supervised separation from the group if necessary, but staff shall not place children in a locked room or in a dark room with the door closed.

3. Incident reports will be filled out on any disciplinary cases, and information is to be shared with parents when picking up the child or sooner, when extreme cases occur. Continued disciplinary problems will result in the participant being asked to leave the program.

4. Children who show patterns of endangerment to themselves, other participants or staff will be asked to leave the program in the direct company of a parent or designee. j.

Illness or Injury 1.

Participants shall have and maintain immunizations in accordance with those required by the Texas Department of State Health Services for public school attendance according to age.

2. Parents shall be notified immediately in cases of illness or injury.

3. An ill child will not be allowed to participate if the child is suspected of having a temperature and/or accompanied by behavior changes or other signs or

BRiCk Summer Fun Camp ~ 2018  symptoms until medical evaluation indicates that the child can be included in the activities. In the event an injury cannot be administered through basic first aid, staff will call 911.

4. When an injury occurs, an incident report shall be filled out immediately. The form shall be filled out completely with the original sent to the Recreation Manager’s office and a copy kept in the Day Camp files.

VI. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR CHILDREN As a part of the Day Camp Manual, staff will be given the following information: a. A child is not allowed to use the phone unless it is an emergency. In this case, Day Camp staff should make the call for the child. b. Children must stay off any elevated surfaces (tables, counter tops, ping pong tables, etc.) c. Children should walk in the building. Running is permitted only in designated areas. d. Bouncing and throwing balls is permitted only in the gym. e. Active games using equipment that can cause damage to window, shades, lights, and ceilings must be played only in the gym. f.

Children must respect staff and each other.

g. Children must wear closed toe shoes at all times. h. Children must be contained and not allowed to filter in with the general public. You must know where each and every child is AT ALL TIMES. VII. ACTIVITIES a. Activities for each group will be planned according to the participant age, interest and ability. The activities should be flexible and promote social and educational advancement. b. A weekly calendar of activities will be posted for parents the Friday prior to that week of camp. c. When taking field trips, staff will: 1. Count everyone before they leave the program site as well as prior to leaving the field trip site.

2. Carry medical information on each child and necessary medications with them on the trip.

4. Carry a cellular phone for emergency use.

5. Require participants to wear camp shirts so that children are easily identified.

VIII. MONITORING AND ENFORCEMENT Standards of care established by the City of Burleson will be monitored and enforced by city departments responsible for their respective areas as identified: a. Health and safety standards will be monitored and enforced by the City’s Police, Fire, and Code Enforcement Departments. b. Staff and program issues will be monitored and enforced by the Burleson Parks and Recreation Department. The Recreation Manager and Recreation Supervisors are responsible for informally visibly checking the camp activities on a daily basis. When this staff is not available, another full-time staff person will be assigned for daily checks.
