Storm water Is everyone’s Doo Dee
Common pollutants found in storm water include oil, fertilizers, trash, soap and pet waste. That’s right, pet waste. Without thumbs, Fido has a hard time picking up after himself, so he needs your help. After a good rain, the runoff from your lawn carries the bacteria into the storm drains which go directly into our creeks, streams, and lakes. The bacterium in the pet waste degrades the quality of surface water and damages wildlife habitats. It can make our waterways unsafe for wading, swimming, boating and fishing. Storm water pollution can be controlled if everyone plays a part and prevents pet waste contamination from entering the storm drain inlets in the streets. Mock gunfights, arts and crafts, great food, and two stages of entertainment are on tap for the City of Burleson’s 23rd annual Founder’s Day. The celebration starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, and wraps up by 5 p.m. in the City’s Old Town, 124 W. Ellison St. Founder’s Day is hosted by the City of Burleson and the Burleson Heritage Foundation. Heritage members dress in period costume for the daylong event. BHF members host visitors at the Burleson Visitors Center and in the City’s two rail cars, Rail Car #330 and Parlor Car #411. For more information call 817-447-3522.

BOO BASH Things will get a little wild and crazy in Old Town on Saturday, Oct. 24, when the City hosts the seventh annual Burleson Old Town Boo Bash. The event, which includes free trick or treating, is for children from birth to 12 years old. The fun takes place 6 p.m.-8 p.m. on Ellison Street, between Main Street and Johnson Avenue (124 W. Ellison St.). All you have to do is dress your child up in his/her favorite costume and bring a trick or treat bag. Local businesses, churches and civic groups set up booths and decorate their vehicles for trunk-or-treat fun. Children enjoy free candy, games, bounce houses, a pumpkin patch full of free pumpkins to decorate, and a costume parade. The event is coordinated by the City’s parks and recreation department. MILITARY VETERANS TRIBUTE
The service and sacrifices of military veterans will be honored Saturday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. when the City of Burleson hosts the eighth annual Military Veteran Tribute at Veterans Memorial Plaza at Renfro Square. The tribute takes place at the City-owned Plaza. Veterans Memorial Plaza features a fountain surrounded by bricks engraved with the names of local service members; the bronze eagle and Purple Heart memorial that were unveiled in 2009; the names of veterans from World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam from the Johnson County Veterans Monument that were added in 2010; and the POW monument added in 2011. The park is located at 298 E. Renfro St., near the corner of Renfro Street and I-35W. For more information call 817-426-9104.

The Senior Activity Center provides a wide variety of activities and services for the senior citizens of Burleson. Participation is open to seniors 50 years and older. LIBRARY OPERATION REMEMBER The goal of Operation Remember is to archive the personal histories of Burleson’s veterans and present their stories in a way that encourages every generation to learn more about our veterans’ contributions to our country and our community. Operation Remember includes: Bricks for Veterans: Veterans Memorial Plaza is located at 298 East Renfro Street in Old Town Burleson and can accommodate 3,024 veteran bricks. An interactive kiosk allows visitors access to information about the service of the military veterans whose names are memorialized on the bricks at the park. Burleson Veterans History Project: In 2003, local military veterans and members of the Burleson Heritage Foundation started compiling an oral history by interviewing veterans and recording those conversations to videotape. All of these interviews are now available online at the Burleson Operation Remember YouTube Channel. Veterans Day Celebration: The City of Burleson honors military service for Veterans Day at Veterans Memorial Plaza. This year’s celebration will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 7.

SWIM LESSON GENERAL INFORMATION CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Minimum Registration Requirement Notice: Classes must have a minimum of four children enrolled by the Wednesday prior to the start date, if not the class will be cancelled or consolidated with another, which may start at a different time. Maximum Registration Notice: Classes are capped at a maximum capacity of 6 students per class. This is to ensure that each swimmer receives ample amount of hands on time with the instructor and to ensure the safety of the participants. Make-up Lesson Policy: The only time that makeup lessons are offered is in the event of inclement weather or an unforeseen closure of the pool. If your child misses a lesson due to illness, schedule conflict, special event, tardiness or any other personal reason, there will be no make-up lessons, sitting in on another class or a partial refund given. No exceptions. Progressing Through the Levels: In order to progress from one level to the next, the child must have passed the previous level. For new children, we offer a free evaluation for level placement. Request the evaluation at the front desk, and then we will schedule an evaluation time.

(Advanced; children ages 4 to 5 years) Participants who have mastered the objectives for Pre-School 1 are ready for Pre-School 2. They will continue working on propulsive swimming movements, water safety and basic strokes using hands on-methods.

(Stroke Development) Participants progress to complete independent swimming. They will learn elementary backstroke, rules for headfirst entries and techniques for treading water. Participants will learn rotary breathing to coordinate their front crawl as well as coordinating the back crawl and will work towards swimming 25 yards continuously.
LEVEL 4
(Stroke Improvement) Participants improve their technique and increase their endurance by swimming front crawl and back crawl for distances of 25 yards and greater continuously. The breaststroke and butterfly are introduced as well as the basics of turning at a wall.
LEVEL 5
(Stroke Refinement) Participants will coordinate and refine their strokes as well as increase their endurance by swimming distances of 50 yards and greater. Flip turns, both on the front and back, are introduced as well as various skill drills.
