NEW MEMBER RECRUITMENT Wow! What an exciting recruitment period we had from June-September 2016.

Here are some of the fun recruitment events and how well they were attended: • The new member GMM social in September had 9 new members attend and 9 active members. Kate Zwecker did an awesome job leading the group with Junior League trivia.

• A good time was had by all at Aster Pantry & Parlor in Armory Square. 8 new members and 7 actives attended this Thursday night event in September.

• 4 actives attended the Harbor Run in August to support It’s About Childhood and Family, Inc. The Junior League of Syracuse, Inc. | The NOTES | October 2016 | 1

• The JLS ladies sure do love their Pure Barre. 7 new members attended this special class in August along with 4 active members.

• The women of JLS were up early on a Sunday in July volunteering at the Gillie Girl Tri. 4 active members and 2 new members attended this fun event.

• Everyone enjoyed the local 315 Brewery in July. 4 new members attended along with 8 active members.

• We had a lovely outing to Owera Vineyards in June. 2 sustainers attended along with 7 actives and 2 new members.

• Yoga with Sophie was enjoyed by 10 active members on a Saturday in June.

Overall, we had 53 active members, 32 new members and 2 sustainers participate in our summer recruitment events.

HOLIDAY SHOPPES 2016

The 2016 Holiday Shoppes show is quickly approaching!

The committee is working diligently toward what they hope will be the best year yet! If anyone knows of any merchants that would be a good fit, please pass them along to the committee ASAP as contracts will be going out within the week. Tickets are available for members to purchase! If anyone has any questions or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to Marisa Montreal or Kelsey Howard.

COMMUNICATIONS SOCIAL MEDIA AND HOLIDAY SHOPPES Social Media outlets, such as Facebook, are the quickest and easiest way to share and promote events. The platform is specifically designed to encourage users to “Like” and share content they enjoy with their own community (their friends, groups, pages, etc.).

We have set up an official “Holiday Shoppes 2016” event page: https://bit.ly/jls-hs16-fb We encourage everyone to mark that you are “going” to the event and then share it to your Facebook profile so others can see that the event is happening as well. Then we hope that those people will mark that they are “interested” or “going” to the event, which in turn will appear on their news feed for others to see! With each share or event page interaction it exposes the event to more and more people!

It’s also important to present a consistent message when sharing the event on Facebook or other social media platforms. For example, the correct hashtags should be used... #JLSHS16 #JuniorLeagueSyr #HolidayShoppes ...And if you can link back to and/or tag JLS that’s great too!

We are delighted to welcome Caryn Schrader to the role of Office Coordinator. Having been a member of the JLS leadership while an active member, Caryn brings a great understanding of the League operations.

Her familiarity with the JLS, combined with her professional experiences, make her well suited for the Office Coordinator position.

MEMBERSHIP OCTOBER GMM Our October GMM speaker is Dr. Michael Gilbert, Executive Director of It’s About Childhood & Family, Inc. We met Michael through the Junior League’s participation in last month’s Harbor Run which was a race to benefit It’s About Childhood & Family, Inc. Dr. Gilbert has worked in human services for the past 25 years, including foster care, group home, and hospital settings. In addition, he has worked as a school psychologist within the Syracuse City Schools for the past 16 years as well as an adjunct professor at local colleges. In 2000, Dr. Gilbert founded It’s About Childhood & Family, Inc., a not-for-profit clinic and resource center. Recently, he launched the Inner Wealth Initiative in Central New York as a grassroots movement designed to provide families an alternative to the traditional mental health system. In addition to lecturing extensively, he advocates for non-labeling and non-medication approaches for families and teachers with children exhibiting challenging behaviors, commonly diagnosed as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, or Bipolar Disorder. Dr. Gilbert is on the Board of Directors for the International Society for Ethical Psychology and Psychiatry (ISEPP) as well as annual conference chairperson. We look forward to learning more about Dr. Gilbert and his not-for-profit, It’s About Childhood & Family, Inc. during this month’s GMM. SUSTAINER NEWS The Sustainers annual pie making event will be held again this year at the Blessed Sacrament Parish Center in Eastwood on Saturday, December 3 from 9:00 a.m.

WEBINAR WEDNESDAYS Webinar Wednesdays are back. They began Wednesday, September 21, 2016 with DARE TO BE YOURSELF: THE AUTHENTIC LEADER. You can access past webinars in the Webinar Wednesdays archive on AJLI’s website.

AJLI’s Webinar series, Webinar Wednesdays, is one of many methods to help Junior League women develop as community and civic leaders. These sessions, typically one-hour in duration, are designed to appeal to every Junior League member, regardless of age or current engagement in her community, as an easy way to increase her knowledge of and interest in community and civic leadership.

Webinar Wednesdays runs from September to June, typically on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 1pm (Eastern Time Zone).

• How much abuse did Rosa Parks endure for simply declaring she had a right to sit in the best available seat on the bus?

• How much ridicule did Janet Guthrie overcome to prove she could compete with 32 male drivers in the Indianapolis 500?

No matter how high the hill they were trying to climb, these women may not have realized they were making history at the time they were living through it.

That may have been true of Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton 168 years ago when they called a meeting on women’s rights in Seneca Falls, New York.

Their message to women – and men – became a powerful communication, in small words, short sentences, big ideas.

A lot of women were there to hear that message. Remember, we’re talking about 1848. Seneca Falls is a beautiful part of upstate New York, but in those days you didn’t get into Syracuse and take a rent-a-car to your five-star hotel. You really had to want to be there.

What those women brought with them to Seneca Falls was what we still need today to finish what they started — the recognition that commitment is the source of solutions; courage is the source of action; and human dignity is the source of purpose.

Those of us at Vision 2020, a nationwide campaign for equality for women, remind ourselves daily that we need the same kind of resolve, the relentless perseverance, that history’s heroes found so necessary to bring about change.

• When women occupy such a small percentage of top leadership positions in business and government, and progress is glacially slow, we need to work harder to change things.

• When women continue to be paid less than men in the workplace, we need to stand up and speak out.

We all understand obstacles. A path with no obstacles probably isn’t leading anywhere worth going. Besides, the greater the obstacle, the greater the example we set for others by overcoming it.

Vision 2020 is about “Honoring the Past, Enriching the Present, Shaping the Future” for American women.

• We need to learn from the achievements of other women in other times.

• We need to communicate the well-documented benefit of having the United States utilize all its brainpower.

• We need to define a future where equality is not a promise, but a reality, and to provide the leadership to reach that elusive goal.

What Vision 2020 is undertaking in all 50 states is aligned with Junior League values and we are proud to have AJLI among our Vision 2020 Allied organizations. Together we will celebrate in the year 2020 the centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote.

We will host in Philadelphia a series of events, involving all 50 states. In educational and entertaining fashion, we will honor the past, measure our progress in the present, and put some shape to the future. The celebration has a name: “Women 100.”

That year – 2020 – will be an election year. Vision 2020 has set a modest goal, to get 100% of eligible women voters to cast their votes that November. Yes, we know the goal is outrageous.
