HOLIDAY SHOPPES 2016 The 21st Annual Holiday Shoppes is quickly approaching and the excitement is surely building!

The Holiday Shoppes Committee is diligently working to place the finishing touches on the planning process. This year’s event will again take place at the Fairground’s Horticulture Building and will be decorated with some new, live trees and exciting new vendors as well!

League members are required to purchase 5 tickets each at $5.00 per ticket. In addition, we will be selling pre-sale tickets to the public through our website for $6.50. Shoppers can also purchase pre-sale tickets at Price Chopper for $6.00 and General admission tickets will remain $8.00 at the door.

The committee is counting on League members to help with staffing for the event! Active and Associate members are required to participate in a total of 5 hours each. Sustainers have the flexibility of participating in 2.5 hour shifts.

We are currently at about 120 merchants and 150 booths and the contracts are still rolling in. We have many “fan favorites” returning such as: Thousand Islands Winery, Bayside Wood Products, and Simple Roast Coffee. In addition, the committee is excited to add new merchants like Lularoe, Lazy lady Crafts and Aunt Mary’s Marvelous Creations. With the help of Jenny Jackson Donahoe, we are also working to secure new food vendors to serve food at the event (rather than the Fairgrounds café!). We are VERY excited about the opportunity to offer new food options to JL members, merchants and shoppers as well!

Raffle prizes and event sponsors will be announced within the next few weeks and raffle tickets will be available at the raffle booth throughout the duration of the event.

Similar to last year’s model, the Junior League Holiday Party will be held at the Fairgrounds (in the Horticulture building) the evening of Friday, November 18th. The party planning committee is working on creating a fun holiday celebration! We are all looking forward to another successful event and we thank EVERYONE for all of their hard work and assistance!

COMMUNITY WE ARE EXCITED FOR ANOTHER GREAT YEAR OF COMMUNITY EVENTS!

SUSTAINER NEWS On September 19, 34 Sustainers and JLS Board members gathered at Drumlins for the Sustainers’ annual golf and dinner outing. The weather was perfect and all enjoyed reconnecting with friends.

Next up – the annual pie making for the Rescue Mission. Sustainers will gather again at the Blessed Sacrament Parish Center in Eastwood on Saturday, December 3 from 9:00 a.m. - noon. Come join us in making the holidays nicer for those less fortunate than we are. No matter what your baking skills may be (and mine are pretty limited), we can find a task to fit. Watch your mail for your invitation.

Don’t forget to sign up for a shift at Holiday Shoppes. It’s not just a great chance to shop for unique holiday gifts. It is a terrific opportunity to get to know more of the JLS Actives, and learn first-hand what JLS is up to these days.

In October we participated in two community activities serving meals at the Rescue Mission. We served lunch on September 23rd and dinner on September 25th.

We are looking forward to our upcoming community events….

We will be at Chadwick Residence on October 23rd and will be serving Thanksgiving Dinner at Blodgett School on November 17th.

December 10th, we will have a funfilled community event decorating Gingerbread houses at the Westside Family Resource Center. Please be sure to check out Seeing Spot or the member website to volunteer for events.

Also as a reminder, we have baskets set up at the JLS office for ongoing donations for school supplies, canned goods and gently used or new children’s books!

NOMINATING UPDATE:

The 2016-2017 Nominating Committee has had a busy start to the League year. We have three members rolling off of the Committee and at the December GMM we will be selecting three very qualified members to fill the open positions. We are in the process of finalizing the KNOW 2017-2019 Nominating Slate, and it will be distributed to the membership in the next couple weeks. In addition, the Nominating Committee has taken a look at the JLS Policies governing submission of Phase I/Phase II paperwork. As you are aware, the Nominating and Placement Committees have merged. In the interest of efficiency and to assist with both Leadership and Committee placement, we have decided to combine Phase I/Phase II paperwork. This will give the Nominating Committee an idea of each member’s’ interest in both leadership and committee work, and facilitate placement of the same. The Annual Awards Nominations process will remain as is, and nominations will continue to take place the in the Spring. We are eager to try this new approach to the slating/placement process, and expect it to be a good transition.

Now is the time to be thinking about Leadership and where you see yourself contributing to the League! If you think you may be interested in a Leadership Position or serving on a particular Committee, but are unsure of the nuts/ bolts of the role, the month of November is going to your chance to attend any committee meeting you would like as well as attend the November Board meeting. The November Board meeting with take place on 11/15/16 at the League Office. This is your chance to see your Board in action as they conduct a regular business meeting, and have the opportunity to ask our fearless leaders all the questions you have been dying to have answered. The information should be posted on Seeing Spot soon. Please RSVP so we can make sure to have enough delicious refreshments.

The Junior League of Syracuse has two roles to manage both the public-facing website (www.jlsyracuse.org) and the member site (https://members.jlsyracuse. org). Currently, the Member site is managed by the Website Administrator (Sarah Weber) and the public-facing website is managed by the Assistant Web Administrator (Carrie Ryder). The Member site is accessible via login only and is where members can go to sign up for Community activities, update their profile and learn about the status of their Obligations.

Today, we are going to navigate you through the public-facing website, which is a great tool for non-members and prospective members to learn more about the structure of the League and its activities within the community. For instance, on the HOME page, you can see our upcoming Calendar of Events and learn more about some of our major initiatives, such as Holiday Shoppes, 95 for 95 and STEM. On the ABOUT page of the website, visitors can see a list of our current Board of Directors, learn our League history and view our Mission and Vision statements. On the MEMBERSHIP Page, you can learn more about how to join the League, how to transfer your membership and see Member Award winners as far back as 1996! The SUPPORT US page is where our list of Supporters for STEM and Holiday Shoppes are publicized. It is also where you can learn how to use AmazonSmile, which offers the same selection of products and prices as Amazon – but with 0.5% of the purchase price benefiting the JLS! The SUPPORT US page is getting a lot of traffic these days due to the “Holiday Shoppes 2016” subpage. Visitors can see the times and dates of this year’s event and purchase tickets. Vendors can apply to be a merchant and access the Merchant page if their application has been approved.

Finally, the MEDIA page is where you can view the archive of past issues of The NOTES, see League and member mentions in local news outlets and access our other social media platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook.

HOLIDAY PARTY Based on the success of the HS 20th Anniversary Party, we have decided to have our Holiday Party at the NYS Fairgrounds on November 18th!

Tickets are $15 a person, which include appetizers and one drink ticket.

Beer and wine will be available to purchase for $3 a drink (remember to bring cash). Feel free to bring a significant other or guest. The event is open to all new members, actives and sustainers. Tickets can be purchased on our website or at the JLS office.

DR. MIMI’S JUNIOR LEAGUE SURVIVAL KIT As a past President of Junior League of Greater Orlando, and having done leadership training with over 150 Leagues, I have learned that sometimes we need a Survival Kit. There may be times when you feel like you cannot “survive” the week.

Don’t fret! If you develop this Survival Kit, it will have just what you need to keep yourself focused on the small-but-oh-sovery-important things!

In the Junior League Survival Kit, be sure to have: • A rubber band to remind you that you are flexible and can stretch to fit just about any demand or challenge of your membership.

• A safety pin to remind you to sometimes poke fun at yourself. Yes, it is the Junior League but it is only the Junior League.

• A lightbulb to help you remember to seek new ideas. Members will support what they help create.

• A kaleidoscope to show you how a picture can change when you look at it from a different angle or new perspective. Remember that the view from the front of a GMM is different from what members experience in the back.

• A Band-Aid to remind you that when there are tough times, you can make it through them. You will heal and be even stronger than before!

• Two straws to keep you from ever reaching your last one! Focus forward.

Better times are ahead.

• A mirror to use when asking yourself, “Am I the only one who can do this?!”

Delegate!!! More members leave because they are underutilized than over utilized.

• A Lifesaver to remind yourself that the right word at the right time can save someone’s Junior League life.

• Hershey’s Hugs and Kisses to remind you to be sweet to yourself and others.

We all want to hear sweet words of praise and recognition!

• A toothpick to help you pick out the best qualities in others (instead of picking and focusing on the bad ones!)

Remember: Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless but because they are priceless.

A DAY TO REMEMBER It’s called Remembrance Day in Canada (and in other Commonwealth countries) and Veteran’s Day in the U.S., but it all comes down to the same thing: the fighting that killed an estimated 10 million soldiers and 7 million civilians in Europe almost a century ago came to an end on November 11, 1918…and the 11th day of November has ever since been a day to commemorate the event.

Members of the Junior League of Detroit, ignoring the segregation of the era, helped wounded and recovering African-American soldiers at the ward at Fort Wayne in Detroit by organizing visits and bringing the soldiers “flowers, fruits, cigarettes, magazines and cheer.” They also set up a tent outside the ward to teach toy-making to those patients strong enough for occupational therapy.

But the war also took place at a time of greater civic leadership for women and, while they were not combatants, their roles in support of those who did fight expanded. On September 29, 1914, two months after the first shots were fired, for example, the first group of Canadian nurses embarked for England as part of the Canada Army Medical Corps. But Junior League members also heard the call, and they responded in a variety of ways. According to The Junior League: 100 Years of Volunteer Service.

Some Junior League members began serving overseas with a number of aid and medical organizations. Volunteers included the president of the Junior League of St. Paul and the founder of the Junior League of Philadelphia. Alison Elder of the Junior League of Montreal served as secretary of a Canadian field hospital and was stationed “somewhere in France.”

The Montreal Junior League plunged into patriotic work first as nearly every member had a brother or friend among the 32,000 Canadian troops sent to Europe when war began there.

Back home, the Junior League of the City of New York’s president, Caroline McCormick Slade, was also the chairman of the YMCA’s Women’s Division of the War Personnel Board. She organized a unit of 126 League members to serve with the YMCA unit in France.

Though the U.S. remained neutral until 1917, by 1916 nearly all American Leagues were doing something to help – mostly collecting money for war refugees or setting up preparedness projects, often in partnership with the Red Cross.

Summing it all up, after the fighting stopped, The Junior League Bulletin magazine put it this way: “As it has been the biggest opportunity in the life of our men, so it has been for our girls, as the stories that come back to us of their achievements are often unbelievable.”

The Junior League of San Francisco set up a delivery service so successful that it became the model for the Red Cross Motor Corps.
