CORKS, FORKS, BREWS & CHEWS EVENT Planning for the second annual ‘Corks, Forks, Brews and Chews’ fundraiser is well on its way. This year’s event is going to be bigger and better than ever! The event will take place on May 11, 2017 at OneGroup Center, (706 N. Clinton St. Syracuse,) from 6-9pm.

C.F.B&C will feature “Taste of Syracuse”-style food samplings that will include food, beer, wine and desserts. Admission to the event will be $20 and include all samplings at 10+ vendors and one drink voucher. A cash bar will also be available.

We are anticipating higher attendance numbers, extending the event to not only to members and friends but also the Syracuse philanthropic community. Besides winning some delicious wines, we will have some fabulous raffle baskets available, too! Our wine pull will be $10 per pull, and raffle tickets will be $20 with some excellent prizes from Mirbeau Inn and Spa, Empire Brewery, and Chocolate Pizza Co., and more. Get excited for more details coming next month!

COMMUNITY

We have such a wonderful community collaborations committee this year. In the beginning of the year we planned out a community event for each month and a committee member took the lead on that project. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard this year!

The community collaborations committee held a wonderful event during February. We planned a Valentine’s tea party for the women of YWCA’s My Sister’s Closet. The event included a string quartet, tea service, clothing for the women to shop and a motivational speaker. The women also received favors and Valentine’s Day cards that JLS members and their families made at a February Sectional event. Thank you to Cheryl Saidel for taking the lead on this and helping to bring this idea to life!

MARCH 15TH AT HUNTINGTON FAMILY CENTER: We will be making cookies from scratch with the program participants and playing bingo.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK, APRIL 23RD-28TH: We are planning a week full of volunteer opportunities.

Confirmed projects include the assembly of first aid kits with the refugee population, a restocking of the book nook at Westside Family Resource Center (Little White House of Hope), and #JLSMyMonday member volunteer projects.

SUSTAINER NEWS COMMUNICATIONS Attendance at the monthly R&Rs continues strong with twenty-two sustainers gathering for the January R&R at Grover’s Table in Fayetteville. Thanks go to hosts for the evening- Margaret Karim, Jane Roller and Judy Winslow- for making the arrangements and welcoming Sustainers to this new venue. Watch for email blasts for locations and hosts for future R&Rs. By this time, Sustainers should have received forms and criteria to nominate candidates for the Spirit of Mary Harriman Community Leadership Award and the Sustainer of the Year Award. The Mary Harriman Award celebrates a member who has made a positive impact on both the Junior League of Syracuse and her community.

She has used her talents and resources to improve the social and economic conditions of others and has shown outstanding leadership on the Junior League of Syracuse.

The deadline for nominations for this award is March 17, 2017. The Sustainer of the Year Award celebrates a member who has made outstanding contributions to the Junior League of Syracuse through work on one or more committee(s) and/or projects of the Junior League. The deadline for nominations for this award is March 24, 2017. Both awards will be presented at the annual dinner in June. Last month, JLS President Cathy Dotterer reported on the results of October’s active member survey. Over half of active members made their voices heard and provided valuable insights on member preferences for topics of community impact, reasons for membership renewals, and more.

The survey also included questions pertaining to member preferences and consumption of League communications including the NOTES and email blasts.

When asked their preferred source of information for JLS news and activities, the majority of active member respondents indicated they prefer to turn to email blasts.

Substantiating this preference, almost two-thirds of respondents answered they always read the weekly blasts, and nearly all respondents indicated they always or sometimes read the blasts.

The NOTES remains a valued source of news and information, with almost 90% of active member respondents indicating they always or sometimes read the JLS’ monthly newsletter.

The NOTES and weekly email blasts both offer flexibility to member preferences. Did you know members can choose to receive the NOTES in print format? Contact the JLS office to opt in (or out) of receiving a hard copy newsletter at your address. Are you experiencing difficulties receiving the email blasts? Reach out to the office for troubleshooting email filters or an incorrect email address could be to blame.

Members can also change the address at which they receive blasts by contacting the office (office@jlsyracuse.com).

The responses to this fall’s communications survey questions were illuminating and will help shape work by the council during the rest of this year and beyond. Feel free to reach out to the communications team to share your thoughts.

Hello Everyone: It’s that time of year-Award Nominations are Due! We all know that JLS member who is EXTRA devoted to the League-don’t be shy, nominate her! Look for the Awards Nomination Form on the Members Section of the JLS Website.

Available awards include:

The ‘League Cup’ Award: This award is given to a person who has

dedicated an extraordinary amount of volunteer time and effort both in the League and the community: commitment to the JLS by involving participation in League committee work and dedicated to community by regularly spending many volunteer hours within the community.

In-League Award: This award is given to a member(s) for outstanding

contribution to committee work. This would be for a member who goes beyond the requirements of the league members. May sit on more than one committee.

Community Service Award: This award is given to a member(s) for significant community involvement. The person may give of their time as a leader in other organizations.

New Member Award: This award is given to a member(s) with 1-3 years League experience for dedication and commitment to the League and to the community.

MEMBERSHIP The new member class is continuing to have a successful year, with monthly events in 2017 that have included a volunteer brunch at the Dorothy Day House in January and a presentation from Liz Blane from Vera House in February. In addition to provisional-specific events, new members have participated in GMMs and sectionals!

We are looking forward to “speed dating” with the JLS committees at the end of March.

Smart Giving for the

Future

On Sunday, like many of you, I was glued to the television, watching endless interviews on a range of channels about the January 21st women’s marches. More than once I heard commentators ask, “What’s next?” and “How will this groundswell be translated into action?” and “How will women come together to effect change?”

The weekend of January 20 and 21, 2017 is one that will be remembered for a long time. First, the swearing in of a new U.S. President on Friday and then the many voices of American women (but also around the world!) on Saturday.

I am not going to focus on whether these women’s marches were pro or anti our new President. That’s not my point. I am going to focus on the need hundreds of thousands of women saw to make sure that our shared future includes the voices of women – not just on “women’s issues” but more broadly. And that’s a good thing. All of us have the responsibility to share our views and speak up for what we believe.

That made me think of my own organization, The Junior League.

The Junior League was founded in 1901 to give women the opportunity to come together, to learn about community issues, and to use their leadership skills to improve lives. Throughout our history we have tackled issues – often before they were “popular” – like domestic violence, juvenile justice, perinatal depression, human trafficking, the list goes on and on. Whether the issue is global or domestic, however, we work together as League members to create change at the grassroots level.

Throughout our history, we have also given women the opportunity to gain leadership skills that have often translated into remarkable civic careers – from Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve in both the House of Representatives and Senate, to Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman on the Supreme Court. Today, Junior League women lead in our Congress, in the military and in state and local government. In the nonprofit sector we serve as Presidents, CEOs and Executive Directors.

And our members can be found in all walks of corporate life, from small companies to giant corporations.

As an organization, we see the need for respectful, bipartisan, nonpartisan conversations and the need to create environments where differing views are respected – encouraged – and shared outcomes created. The Junior League reaches out to all women who value our Mission. We are committed to inclusive environments of diverse individuals, organizations and communities.

So, here’s my answer for women looking for “what’s next” after Saturday? Join The Junior League.
