Winter Leadership Conference I attended the Winter Leadership Conference on January 22 – 24th, which was held in Orlando FL. Despite the weather being rainy and colder, AJLI kept us busy and enthusiastically learning about servant leadership, current governance issues, and the issue-based model of community impact. Attendees were broken out by league size; The Junior League of Syracuse being in the 0 – 99 actives group, along with other New York State leagues such as Rochester, Albany, Saratoga and Elmira/Corning.

Small leagues talked about the struggles of member retention and the issue-based community impact model. They shared successes and struggles about league size, which is particularly interesting as we (JLS) move toward researching another focus area. Member Development The JLS 2014 – 2015 New Member class has been off to a great start! In November the new members got together at the New York State Fair Grounds to learn about the Holiday Shoppes annual fundraiser. That same night the ladies created a one-of-a-kind wreath to donate to the Everson Museum of Art. In December many of the new members attended the JLS holiday party, where they got to know each other, as well as other active and sustaining members of the JLS. In January the new members met at the Dorothy Day House, where they learned how The Junior League of Syracuse have partnered with that organization in the past. The new members also served the residents dinner and played Bingo. It was a great time for all. In February the new members met at Vera

broad enough to encompass different interests of members within the common issue. Then hopefully in return, providing more member engagement and member retention. Vicky Clark, a predominate AJLI speaker, kicked off the meeting educating us about servant leadership and the congruence between its philosophy and the mission of the Junior League. The foundation of servant leadership is that the servant leader serves others, rather than others serving the leaders. The importance of a President who focuses on servant leadership, is a great refresher since the Members make the League. The current governance hot topic discussed at length, is diversity and inclusion. AJLI is in the process of changing the language in the Bylaws and Operational Policies to be more in-line with accommodation laws. Primarily focused around gender, age, and sexual orientation, these changes will be voted on at the Annual Conference in April. All in all the Winter Leadership Conference provided lots of learning, laughs and useful tools for my transition from PE to President. Contact the PE: Jenny Jackson: jennyjackso@gmail.com
