HOLIDAY SHOPPES 2013 RECAP Thank you for all coming together to make the 18th Annual Holiday Shoppes a success!

We had almost 5,200 come through the doors of the Horticulture Building to see the amazing event we all put together! The committee had an intense last couple of months, but we know it’s worth it when it’s all over. I love to be able to see the smiles on everyone’s faces before they walk through the doors of what will no doubt be a fantastic experience. There is no other event that you can get your holiday shopping done early and support a heartfelt non-profit at the same time!

This year, we kicked it up a notch by moving away from the red and green we all know and love to a fresh blue and white winter wonderland. Thanks to Jen Barclay and all the volunteers on Wednesday and Thursday for taking the time to really transform the Fairgrounds. I know everyone loved it! As I’m sure most of you saw, Kseniya and I were all

over the television and radio getting the public excited about the event. Thanks to Whitney Browne for making all the advertising happen and really getting our event out there.

The raffle table caught everyone’s eyes as they walked in, and we made more money on the raffle this year than last year because of it! Not to mention the exciting donations that made for a great large ticket raffle drawing. Thanks to our Raffle Co-Chairs, Linda Woodrow and Mary Ann Revere-Lopez, for really getting out there and selling our tickets. As I’m sure some of you noticed, we had more than 20 new merchants attend Holiday Shoppes this year, and almost all of them were happy when they left!

JLS Book Club

We will not be having Sectionals this year. Instead we are bringing a fantastic training session to the membership: Strengths Finder, a wonderful program that encourages you to discover and apply your personal strengths, rather than fix your weaknesses.

You should have picked up a special online access code at the December GMM (Contact the JLS Office via email at office@ JLSyracuse.com if you still need a code).

Complete the online survey before the GMM on February 11, 2014 and bring in the list of your top 5 strengths results.

We will have a facilitator present strategies for applying your strengths, which will help you in the League as well as your professional career. What fun!

MEET THE New Member CLASS! • Jamie Lingenfelter – Works in sales and marketing at JGB Enterprises and is a Syracuse native. Becoming a more active member of the community and meeting new people are two of the reasons she joined JLS. Volunteering is important to Jamie and she wants to learn more about different causes.

• Samantha Finocchiaro – A Chittenango native, Samantha joined the JLS to meet others who share an interest in volunteering and to be more active in Syracuse. Helping the community become the best it can is one of the reasons that she is volunteering.

• Lauren Knisely Schaefer – Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Lauren first moved to Syracuse to attend SU and recently moved back to the area with her husband James. She works for Corning Incorporated in employee communications. Lauren joined the JLS to learn more about non-profits in the Syracuse area, step out of her comfort zone, and get involved in the community.

• Jessica Malzman – Jessica moved here from Manhattan 2 years ago and wanted to find an organization to volunteer with. She likes that the JLS works with a number of different organizations to make a maximum impact on the community. Originally from Bedford Hills, NY, Jessica is an Executive Search Consultant at Whitney Partners. With her husband Ari and dog Sage, Jessica lives in Manlius.

• Kristin Abendroth – A Certified Personal Trainer, Kristin joined the JLS to become involved in more community service activities. As a member of the community she believes it is her responsibility to contribute to the overall wellness of community members. Kristin, husband Ben and children Avery and Connor all live in her hometown of Manlius.

• Julie Arkinson – Working as a Financial Advisor, Julie was looking for a group to volunteer with and was also interested in the JLS Human Trafficking program. A Syracuse native, she plans on staying in the area for the rest of her life with her fiancé George and two cats Ruby and Otto. Julie wants to make Syracuse a vibrant place to live for her future children but also to attract people to our community.

• Emeline Bacani – Her home town is Honolulu, HI and she is currently a graduate student at Syracuse University. Giving back and being an active community member has always been important to her. One of the reasons Emeline stated volunteering is important to her was that she has been blessed with so many great things and people that she wants to pay it forward.

• Amy Burnell – Amy would like to be able to provide assistance and support when what she has to offer is appropriate. A native of Chittenango, Amy currently is working as a Realtor and Test Administrator. She and her husband Donald are fostering dogs for the National Great Pyrenees Rescue.

• Katie Corbishley – Currently a Teacher in the Syracuse City School District, Katie wanted to be more involved in the community and do some per-

sonal and professional networking. Making connections within the community is one of the reasons that she volunteers. Katie is a native of Syracuse.

• Lindsay LaRocque – Leaving her hometown of Scranton, PA for Syracuse, Lindsay currently works as a Recruiter for SUNY Upstate. She joined the JLS to meet new people, to get to know her new hometown and to also give back to the community. Lindsay and her husband Tim will be moving to Liverpool in 2014.

• Kristen Morey – Kristen is a Jamesville, NY native and currently works as a teacher. She joined the JLS to take part in projects and with topics that she can feel passionate about and to further develop her skills and talents. Volunteering is important to her so that she can give back to the community and make it a better place for all who live or visit here.

• Erin Pratte – Erin works as a CPA auditor for a public accounting firm and has a dog named Cassidy that she shares with her fiancé Ryan.

Erin heard that there were many great, passionate women involved in the JLS and she had been looking for an organization to get involved with.

She would like to be able to give back to her community and become more involved.

• Carrie Ryder – Carrie works for Hancock Estabrook as their Marketing Director. The combination of volunteerism and socializing within the JLS appealed to her. Carrie is originally from Chittenango and is now living in Manlius. When she’s not busy volunteering she likes to spend time with her dog Luca and significant other Jay. • Erica Skov – Erica is originally fom Red Hook, NY and currently lives in Syracuse. She does sales for a market research/consulting firm.

She would like to get involved with her community and contribute to make her “neighborhood” a better place. She has always enjoyed volunteering and being part of something bigger than herself. Erica and her fiancé Josh like to spend time with their dog Bennett.

• Amy Slivka – Amy works for BNY Mellon

in Finance. Social networking and community involvement drew her to the JLS. After working with (and continuing to work with) JACNY, she’s excited to expand her horizons working with new groups. Amy was the Junior Achievement CNY volunteer of the year in 2011. Currently she resides in Liverpool.

• Mona Smart – Mona’s home town is Danvers, MA and she currently resides in Manlius with her husband Ryan and three children, Teddy, Genevieve and Layla. Mona joined the JLS to help the community and feels that you are not truly part of your community until you volunteer in it. She is an independent consultant/distributor for Rodan and Fields Dermatologists • Karen Belgrader – Karen is the Development Director of Samaritan Center in Syracuse and is originally from Jordanville, NY. She now lives in Liverpool with her husband Dan and children Courtny and Peter. Karen wants to make a difference and joined the JLS because it is a wonderful organization and she believes in improving our community.

• Emily Cronin – Emily’s home town is Riverside, CT but you can find her living in Syracuse now with her dog Loki and her significant other Neil. She is an elementary teacher who was very involved in community service through college.

Emily joined the JLS because she missed working with people to volunteer and learn new things, gain new experiences and meet new people.

• Jackie Popkess – Currently works as a School Counselor for OCM BOCES and also teaches learn to skate. Originally from Camillus, Jackie moved home after living in Boston for 12 years and thought joining the JLS would be a great way to meet people and get involved in the community. She lives in Camillus with her husband John and two cats, Monty and Murray. Jackie is excited to be a part of the JLS.

COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS

The Community Collaborations Committee created a play area for the lobby area of McMahon / Ryan Child Advocacy Center on November 23rd. In addition to a play kitchen, JLS donated a number of toys, including a train set and play rug for small toy cars. After arranging the toys and enjoying refreshments, the JLS group received a tour from Program Director, Michele Cunningham, and discussed the services provided by the center and current issues facing vulnerable children, including neglect, abuse and human trafficking. Following a great learning event at the center, most of the group enjoyed lunch at a great new restaurant in the area, Flame.

Also at the end of November, the committee planned 2 outings to shop for items in need at the Rescue Mission. Personal care items for the Christmas stockings/gift bags distributed to the men, women and children supported by the Rescue Mission were purchased by the group, along with several pairs of gloves to help brave our winter weather. Items were delivered at the Rescue Mission with plans to return at a more convenient time to meet with their volunteer coordinator, Lisa DeAngelo.

December started with the a collection of canned and dry good items at the GMM to support the Salvation Army’s Distribution Day. The committee will continue to explore how to

work with them with respect to women, children and the various shelters they support. On the 14th, a JLS “Baking & Baby Day” was hosted to benefit the Assumption Food Pantry. Different types of cookies were baked, along with frosting and decorating cut-outs for the holiday season.

The group organized baskets of baby food, diapers and wipes much needed for the young families visiting the pantry.

Early January brought us the opportunity to learn more about Joseph’s House, an organization devoted to assisting young pregnant women.

The Community Collaborations committee will be meeting to discuss possible collaborations.

Human Trafficking Project Coming!

NYS ANTI-TRAFFICKING COALITION PRESS RELEASE: January 10, 2014 Sanctuary for Families and the New York Center for Juvenile Justice Applaud Governor Cuomo For Protecting Sex Trafficked Minors Groundbreaking new law ensures sexually exploited children receive services New York State is a national leader in the fight to end human trafficking New York, NY – Sanctuary for Families and the New York Center for Juvenile Justice applaud New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for signing bill A8071 into law today, cementing New York State’s commitment to treating all prostituted children as victims.

Under this new law, the adult court system will have the authority to treat commercially sexually exploited minors as persons in need of supervision cases (PINS), providing them with the services available to children in Family Courts. It also ensures that these teens will not be exposed to the indelible stigma of a life time criminal record for prostitution.

“This landmark law, for which Sanctuary for Families has been a leading advocate, is a victory in the fight against the sex-trafficking of minors. Victims will get the support and services they so vitally need,” said Hon. Judy Harris Kluger, Executive Director of Sanctuary for Families. “We commend the tireless efforts of Assemblywoman Amy Paulin and Senator Andrew Lanza to pass the legislation and protect this vulnerable population.”

President Barack Obama has declared January 2014 National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

“Teenagers who are victims of sex trafficking urgently need services and support, not criminalization. They need to be seen and treated, not according to an ill-conceived adult criminal standard, but rather, precisely for who they are: New York’s children,” said Michael A. Corriero, Executive Director of the New York Center for Juvenile Justice.

The New York court system is the nation’s leader in developing innovative way to shift the way we approach human trafficking, and this new law builds on the ground-breaking Human Trafficking Intervention Courts.

“Today is a momentous day, as New York continues its strong leadership in the fight to end human trafficking and support the people who are victimized by this atrocious crime.

The Courts will finally view all minors who are prostituted as the victims they are,” Assemblywoman Amy Paulin said.

“This bill will help save lives in New York State,” Senator Andrew Lanza said. “Trafficked minors are abused victims trapped in a modern-day form of slavery. This new law will help protect them so they can go on to live fulfilling lives.”

While most of you know we have been working on an internet safety program we have decided to expand that even further. We are creating a project that uses all our resources to raise awareness of the issue of HT. I can’t give you all the details just yet, but they will be announced at the February GMM. This project will involve every member of the League (yes, Sustainers we need you too).

Happy New Year! We hope that you all enjoyed the holidays and are now settled in for a cozy and productive 2014.

Thank you to the many Sustainers who made it out to the Holiday Shoppes to work a shift(s) and to shop! It was great to see so many of you there.

We had fun getting together for our first R&R of the year just before Thanksgiving at The Scotch ‘n Sirloin in DeWitt. We skipped December and then reconvened at the same location on Tuesday, January 28th from 5:307:30pm. We are happy to entertain any offers to coordinate this monthly gathering!

Our Annual Pie Baking event was a great success, thanks to the efforts of Sheila Corbishley and our reliable group of bakers. (See right) Upcoming Events Participation and Help Needed!

SUSTAINER Pie Making

If there is one event that will get you into the holiday spirit of giving it is the Annual Sustainer Pie-making event. 18 women (and one husband) gathered at Blessed Sacrament Church on Saturday, December 7th to peel and slice apples, make delicious pie crust and assemble 50 apple pies for the Rescue Mission.

It is amazing how quickly and easily an apple pie can be made when you are talking and laughing with JLS friends!

Special thanks to Barb Stratton and Martha Tooley for shopping for the ingredients, Peggy Fabic for set-up and Katie and Bernie Corbishley for delivering the pies to the Rescue Mission. And, as always, we are so appreciative of the wonderful organizational skills and generosity of Sheila Corbishley.

Recommendations for nominees will be due at the end of February for the Mary Harriman Award. Please take some time to think about a Sustainer who exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding leader that has improved the social and economic conditions of others while embracing the mission and vision of the Junior League. The suggestions for nominees (along with the initial paperwork) should come from the Sustainer ranks and not just from the Sustainer VPs. We truly value your input and hope that you will take the time to consider a fellow Sustainer for this prestigious award.
