SECTIONALS 2018 Sectionals are just around the corner and there are some great events planned. Check out the JLS website for links to register. The first event will be to make a miniature terrarium. This workshop is designed to bring a little green into your life in the middle of winter. Create a terrarium using small figurines to tell a story. This workshop includes a glass jar, charcoal, soil, moss, stones, plants and figurines.

It will be held on Tuesday, February 6th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Ballentyne Gardens at 4825 Hopkins Rd. in Liverpool and the cost is $15.

The next event will be a barre3 class. JLS member Jennifer Rubin will teach this functional training with a twist. Rooted in three fitness disciplines - ballet barre, pilates and yoga - barre3 workouts will have you feeling strong and balanced inside and out. We’re known for building lean muscles, a strong core, and long-term postural benefits. No experience required. The classes are designed to make everyone feel welcome and get a great workout. Wear yoga-like attire (socks are optional) and bring a water bottle.

The Barre3 class will be held on Satuday, February 17th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at barre3 Studio 3401 Erie Blvd. East in Syracuse.

Want to learn new leadership skills and discuss them with fellow members over wine or your beverage of choice? Then attend the third sectional, Wine & Webinar Wednesdays, where you can watch an AJLI webinar, then discuss the topics presented. This webinar will be “Engaging in Difficult Conversations.” Snacks will be provided. Please bring a beverage for yourself or to share.

The Webinar will be held on Wednesday, February 28th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the JLS Offices.

HOLIDAY GMM

COMMUNICATIONS

The Holiday GMM was a success with a great turnout, even with the threatening snowstorm. Members were able to partake of yummy food and desserts while we were updated with the League goings on.

Have you noticed that this time of year is all about relationships? We come off of the holiday months spent with family and friends and begin the new year setting goals, some of which are bound to be relational. We start to see hearts everywhere we go, telling us that Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching. Those that reap the benefits of good relationships, have sown the hard work that they require. Public Relations is not much different. In order for the public to understand and truly appreciate the Junior League, we must each work hard to cultivate this relationship.

We just spent our time and money over the past 4 months getting the word out about Holiday Shoppes and hopefully the mission and vision of the JLS. The PR committee did a fantastic job engaging and informing the community through social media, news, radio, etc.

More times than not, we were explaining who we are to people that had not heard of us. We are finding that the public needs more than just a quick commercial or fundraiser, they need to get to know us personally. This is where we need your help! Share what you love about the Junior League with your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Give them personal experience stories of how we have made a difference. We want our public relations to thrive. With a little bit of extra effort from our members, we can make a difference in this vital relationship. What do you say?

I am so proud to be with all of you and your commitment to the League, in addition to our wonderful member turnout we had a great turnout for the new members too.

Our speaker for the evening was even from our current new member class. Kudos to Malissa Eddie Nicolini for stepping up and empowering us all with techniques to destress from the holidays and the daily grind.

VALETINE’S TEA PARTY The JLS is partnering with My Sister’s Closet at the YWCA to provide a Valentine’s Tea Party with a light meal, inspirational speaker, and music from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 18, in the CNY Community Foundation Ballroom.

Thanks to JL member contributions of gently worn dress clothes during these past few weeks, we will again have clothing available for the ladies to shop.

Please help the Community Collaborations Committee make this event special for those attending! Volunteers can soon register for shifts from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., or from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. The schedule for the event is for pre-event setup occurring between 10 and 11 a.m., event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and cleanup time from 1 to 2 p.m.

Members and their families are also needed on February 17th to help prepare for the Valentine’s Tea Party by making cards and favors and sorting, steaming, and hanging donated clothing.

SUSTAINER NEWS Sustainers were a presence at the Salt City Summit, held at the Marley Center in Syracuse on October 13 & 14. We worked on hospitality and also participated in interesting discussions on the future of the League.

Sustainers turned out to support the Holiday Shoppes this year, by shopping and also by working shifts during the 3-day event in early November. Many beautiful and useful items were available for purchase at the Shoppes.

The Sustainers annual-pie making event, coordinated by Sheila Corbishley, was held again this year at Blessed Sacrament Church Parish Center in Eastwood on Saturday, December 2 from 9:00-noon. This year had a new twist…New Members under the direction of Rea Carver and Sue Shubmehl joined the effort, to learn about the Sustainers’ continuing commitment to service.

Overall there were 30 participants and 80 apple pies were assembled for the Rescue Mission…a fantastic outcome!

October’s R&R was held on October 25 at Laci’s Tapas Bar in Syracuse. The December R&R was held on Tuesday, December 5 at Strada Mia, 313 North Geddes Street, in Syracuse 5:30-7:30 pm. The next R&R will be held in February, location TBA.

COMMUNITY Community Collaborations is excited to have had the fall to ramp up our activities for the winter months. Please keep your eye on Seeing Spot for the numerous activities being posted soon.

We are asking our members to bring in gently used clothes business attire (including shoes, under garments, pants and shirt). If you have some you’d like to donate, you can contact us or drop off at the office. Please make sure they are clean and dry.

Activities for the winter include the Valentine’s Day Tea and National Volunteer week. Remember, if there is anything in the community you’d like to see us involved in, please reach out to Julia Zimmer. We are always looking for input.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! Kudos to us! I am so pleased to announce that we were awarded a $5,000 grant for technology from the Community Foundation.

Audra Mueller, Marie Norkett and I met with the Community Foundation in early September and discussed with them the grants they offer that we may be best suited to receive.

Liz Lane stepped up and was able to finalize the grant application for us and the rest is history. We look forward to updating our computer system, square and printer situation to hopefully help offset some of our outsourced printing jobs.
