This is a great time of the year for the League. Programs are coming together as we work toward completing the year’s goals while we start preparing for next year. Many of the community placements are drawing to a close as the grant process gets started at the end of March. You will see highlights from our community program in this issue. One of them is the New Member Project. The class comes together to do large project in a day. This year we partnered with two agencies for this purpose, Community Housing Resource Partners and the Ronald McDonald House. Photos from these projects are on Page 3. You can also read about plans for our newest community placement, Let’s Go San Antonio. These were developed through collaboration across committees and with one of our partners, the San Antonio Food Bank. Members will be active in these placements starting in June! If you are interested in them look for them during placement sign up. Every year, the Past Presidents get together over lunch for a League update. This year we gathered on February 13th. It was fantastic to have these women together at the Bright Shawl. For me this provided a direct link to our 90-year history; we had more than a quarter century of league leadership in the same room. I was able to spend some time at GOAL conference in late February. It was good to see “Developing the Potential of Women” part of our mission in action. Much of our training is experiential, occurring through placements over the course of the year. This conference is concentrated, leadership development. New and more experienced members enjoyed participating and came out of the weekend with new perspective. One of our signature fundraisers, Fete du Cuvee- a celebration of wine and food, was held on March 1st. Thank you to the many people who contributed their time and resources to make this event a success. Guests enjoyed chef’s special creations and wine pairings as we raised money to support our mission. There is still time to celebrate the League’s many successes. Make sure to join us at our 90th anniversary celebration on May 10th. If you cannot join us for this event, I look forward to seeing you in celebration of San Antonio at the city’s many Fiesta events! I’ll proudly be wearing my new JLSA fiesta pin! Lisa

3rd Annual Fête du Cuvée Fine Wine Auction The 3rd Annual Fete du Cuvee Wine Auction took place on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the Bright Shawl. This spectacular event featured some of the most celebrated chefs and local restaurants San Antonio has to offer. The black tie evening started with wine and hors d’oeuvres, while guests enjoyed a silent auction. Among several noted items for wine connoisseurs listed in the silent auction were large format bottles, reserve wines, and items for the collections of local collectors. The evening continued with the Grand Tasting in the Ballroom where dinner was served. The chefs each had an action station where they prepared live their featured dish, specially paired with a wine to highlight culinary flavors. The 2014 featured Chefs were Holly Dominguez of 18 Oaks, Ernie Estrada of Las Canarias, John Herdman of Sustenio, Justin Johnson of Max’s Wine Dive, John Russ of Luke, Jeff White of Boiler House, and Pastry Chef Chris Jara of Las Canarias. Following dinner, an invigorating live auction was held to help the Junior League of San Antonio achieve their mission of raising funds to benefit community projects and programs. The celebration continued under a beautiful March evening in the Bright Shawl courtyard where guests tasted fabulous wines and were entertained by Light and Sound. This year’s Fete du Cuvee was another smashing success!

Zoo docent program The Junior League of San Antonio contributed greatly to building the zoo to what it is today. Gay Keahey began the docent program at the Zoo during her Junior League years as an independent placement. Shortly after it’s inception, this became one of the most popular and coveted placements. Many members waited years to be a docent. This wonderful program has grown tremendously over the past 45 years. The San Antonio Zoo now has over 225 Docents. Docents serve a vital role in helping the San Antonio Zoo reach its mission of providing a diverse educational experience to their many visitors each year. With provided training, they are involved in a variety of educational opportunities including touring school groups, interpreting zoo exhibits, and presenting education animals.

COmmunity partner Spotlight
The Center provides peer grief support groups for children, adolescents, young adults and their caregivers, as well as individual and family counseling for anyone experiencing or anticipating the death of a loved one. During the past year, the Center’s 16th year of service, the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas served over 2,000 children and their accompanying caregivers in Peer Support Groups and Counseling Services. They trained an additional 5,000 individuals through community outreach and education. A key goal of the program is to help grieving children develop healthy coping skills, while stabilizing and preserving family relationships. The Center is a comfortable, homelike place to come and experience the healing benefits of being nurtured by others who understand.
GOAL The second annual GOAL conference was held the first weekend in February at the Hotel Contessa in downtown San Antonio. Twenty-two junior league members attended along with seven speakers. GOAL, which stands for Growing Our own Awesome Leaders, is designed to provide local training for members of the league. In order to attend the conference, members must either be nominated by a fellow league member or nominate themselves. A selection committee then looks at the whole person in order to choose attendees. The GOAL participants reflect a cross-section of the league in terms of league experience, work experience, and stay-at-home moms. The hope for GOAL is that attendees come away with tools they can apply to their lives both within the league and their everyday lives. As Natalie Tate explains,” I usually evaluate professional development events as a success if I can take home one actionable item. Following the GOAL training weekend, I came back overflowing with ideas to implement both in my professional and League careers.” Still, many of the ladies who attended the weekend retreat left with much more. “GOAL is a living example of the way the Junior League
