elcome Back!! I’m so very excited to kick off the official start to the new JLSA year. While we have not yet had league-wide meetings, your council and committee chairs have been hard at work planning opportunities and activities – both beloved and new.

The Olé Committee has worked all summer long selecting merchants, calling on sponsors, and planning events. Please mark your calendar for October 24 – 27 for some great parties and even better shopping. It’s hard to believe it’s only a few short weeks away.

A couple of weeks ago, we held the first JLSA golf tournament. Designed to be a small fundraiser, the event far exceeded the $2500 net that was budgeted.

Many thanks to the special events ladies who organized the day!

As you know, we took the management of the Bright Shawl back in July 2011.

The tearoom is open for lunch every weekday from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. As your schedule permits, please stop in for lunch. As JLSA members, we get 25% off the daily buffet and 10% off the à la carte menu.

I invite you to join us for the first General Membership meeting on September 11 where some of these new opportunities will be unveiled. You’ll be the first to discover the new fabulous series on Taboo subjects the Education & Training committee has planned; you’ll get to hear firsthand about the impact the JLSA has had in the community from a special guest speaker; and, of course, you’ll get to catch up with those Junior League friends you haven’t seen all summer!

Remember to nomiNate Ok, Ladies, you’ve had all summer to rest and relax and catch your breath right?! Ha! Well as we all know, when the summer begins to wind down the JLSA starts to amp up. It is that time again, the time that the Nominating Committee begins its work to slate a new Board of Directors for 2013-2014. The Nominating Committee began meeting in August to prepare a slate that will be voted on by the membership in December.

Therefore applications and nominations are being solicited now. If you know of someone or have worked with someone in the League that you think is a candidate for the Board, nominate them.

You don’t have to wait for someone to nominate you; if you think you would enjoy being on the Board of Directors, if you think you have something to contribute, even if you aren’t sure you are ready, complete one of the nomination forms - The Nomination Committee has no idea if you are interested if you don’t speak up.

Nomination applications can be found at www.jlsa.org under Resources/Forms/Nominating and the deadline to submit a nomination is September 18, 2012.

Reading Camp’s theme centered on animals and their habitats. Each morning of camp, students discovered the day’s habitat through a read-aloud story followed by an engaging science activity. As students dipped both hands in cold water, they were amazed to experience that the Crisco-covered hand was a lot warmer—a concrete way to demonstrate how Arctic wildlife’s blubber layer works as insulation from the freezing cold.

Our volunteers worked hard planning such exciting days for the students, coming up with the most creative and entertaining ways to deliver the curriculum to students. Despite the amount of effort, both Countryman and Drexler enjoyed their experiences and would recommend Reading Camp as a placement to JLSA members next year!

members making impacts Sarah Wannarka

As another League year begins, the JLSA is missing a familiar face. Last year’s Membership Development Chair, Sarah Wannarka, is working in Kabul, Afghanistan as a Senior Legal Advisor for the United States Department of Justice Rule of Law Program. During this year-long assignment, Sarah has been tasked to train and mentor Afghan prosecutors.

In an interview with the AJLI, Sarah explained that as a prosecutor for the Western District of Texas in San Antonio and through membership and leadership positions within various Junior Leagues over the last five years, she relishes “the opportunity to foster and encourage young leaders.” She continues, “The beauty of the Junior League is that while we get to foster women as leaders, we also get to help the community at the same time. I would suppose that is why I was so attracted to the opportunity to mentor and train Afghan women. Not only would it help them as individuals but it would also help the entire Afghan community.”

In many past years, the new sustaining class has purchased an item for the League upon their exit. Gifts have ranged from the gavel we use to call meetings to order, to a podium sign with the JLSA logo, to the beautiful sign that now resides just inside the main doors by the ballroom entrance to the Bright Shawl. We are thrilled to recognize those who contributed to this sign and extend our sincere thanks for helping to make the Bright Shawl a better place for us all. spotlight on: sustainer Jenny Fish transferred to JLSA in 2002. Despite her many activities outside the League, Fish provides a great example of being an involved member. During the Walk San Antonio signature project, Fish found “inspiration to serve the community and my fellow League members with my whole heart.” Fish raved about her placement in SA Works where she learned about the needs of our community.

Her advice for young members is pointed: connect with the women you serve with.

“You will find your League experience more fulfilling if you have a friend to take this journey with you.”

spotlight on: membership Many of us still feel we’re learning the ropes for our first couple of years in JLSA. For Julie Moczygemba, however, her new active year has been defined by her decision to take a leadership role in the League. Julie’s actually wearing two hats for JLSA this year, serving as a chairperson for both Reading Camp and Fete du Cuvee. In one role, as a Reading Camp leader, Julie’s able to use her expertise gained as a fourth-grade teacher to excite kids about learning and literacy. In her other position as Fete cochair, she’s in a learning role, as she strengthens relationships within the League and brings in funding to make community projects possible.

Julie’s not just learning the ropes in JLSA; she’s blazing a trail for other members to follow by reminding us to use our skills, talents and passion to serve our community.

spotlight on: new member Allison Sumners is about helping others. And, those she helps include not only people, but animals as well. In addition to her full-time job with Haven for Hope and her volunteer work with JLSA, Allison also shares her time and her home with some furry friends – she has been fostering pets for the past two years, taking them in to her home and giving them safety, security and affection.

Allison already has obviously a heart for service, and as a new member of JLSA, she’s hoping to use her talents and generosity to build new relationships, make friends and strengthen our San Antonio community.

meet the board: board member spotlight Debbie Callihan-Dingle What does Debbie Callihan-Dingle do? A lot of volunteer service as the new President of JLSA. However, that isn’t the only hat she wears. Debbie is also an educator, a Francophile, a Baylor Bear and a newlywed. She’s prepared to spend a lot of time juggling this upcoming year to make our League even stronger and more impactful in the San Antonio community.

How did she prepare? By filling a variety of placements during her years as a League member. Debbie’s handled quite a few JLSA roles, including working with Rummage Sale, as a new member mentor and as treasurer. She’s gained experience in each of these positions, as well as from mentors like Carolyn Karger, Gretchen Garceau-Kragh, Cathy Scanlon and a host of other JLSA past-presidents.

So, how does Debbie suggest moving into JLSA leadership? By learning about the areas you’re interested in, then jumping right in. “Seize every opportunity you’re given to learn something new,” Debbie advised. For those who think JLSA presidency might a be a future aspiration, she suggests taking time to become well-acquainted with the League as a whole by “asking questions and seeking experience on several councils.”

With her experience in leadership and her optimistic, can-do attitude, Debbie is ready and willing to give her time and talents to JLSA. We’re grateful and excited to see the heights JLSA can reach under her guidance.

San Antonio Cellar Classic The 2013 Junior League fine wine auction, Fête du Cuvée, is partnering with MAX’s Wine Dive as well as Boiler House Texas Grill & Wine Garden to bring you the San Antonio Cellar Classic, an annual celebration of food and wine. Taste over 100 fine wines from around the world and indulge in delicious chef-crafted specialties. Join fellow wine lovers and foodies on Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Pearl Brewery Stables for the biggest wine tasting of the year! General admission tickets are $35/person until October 6, and $40/person after October 6 and at the door. VIP tickets are available for $80/person, and provide access to even more wines and exclusive food samplings. In addition, there will be a reserve dinner on Friday, October 12, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. where you can enjoy an exclusive 5-course dinner, from the MAX’s Wine Dive kitchen of the very talented Chef James Moore, a Fête du Cuvée Featured Chef. Tickets are $125/person or $225/couple and include tax and gratuity. Save the date and make plans to attend!
