Jan Hill — 2009’s Volunteer Extraordinaire The Volunteer Extraordinaire Award is given each year to a Sustaining member of the League who exemplifies the true spirit of voluntarism. She is a visionary who served others throughout her league career and continues to dedicate her time and efforts in our community. The League is proud to have chosen Jan B. Hill as the Volunteer Extraordinaire 2009.

Jan’s service to the San Antonio community began in 1976, when she and her husband, Roger, returned to San Antonio from Dallas. Jan first served the San Antonio area through her involvement with the San Antonio Art League and the Junior Committee of the San Antonio Symphony. As a young wife and mother, Roger and Jan Hill with their children and grandchildren she welcomed the opportunity to meet ice to United Way. Jan’s volunteer service has allowed her a unique opportunity to explore different areas for personal growth and development while allowing her the satisfaction of feeling like she is contributing to something bigger than herself. Jan says that each and every board she has served on, from the Alamo Heights School Foundation, Charity Ball Association, Battle of Flowers Association, Respite Care of San Antonio, Character Education Institute, Southwest Foundation, Military-Civilian Club, Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health, have all enriched her life and instilled the desire to give what she can in gratefulness for all that she has been given.

Jan and Roger have been married 27 years. They have three grown children, Roger C. Hill, III and his wife Sally Sellers; Landon Hill Lanier, and her husband Stephen; and Carlotta (Carlie) L. Hill. Jan is also the proud grandmother of two grandsons: Hicks Lanier and Roger Hill, IV. The Junior League of San Antonio is proud to award this honor to Jan. Her service to the Junior League and the community we live in, helps make San Antonio a better place for all of us. 100% engagement required for 100% literacy

By Emily Jones Literacy San Antonio, JLSA’s signature project, continues to make significant advancements in building an organized coalition to achieve 100% literacy in San Antonio through 100% community engagement.

Through the leadership of JLSA volunteers, the community of San Antonio will create a well-coordinated, integrated system for literacy service delivery.

The system will increase literacy levels through a well-managed coalition of organizations dedicated to the vision of 100% literacy and a belief that literacy is a civil right for those of all ages and backgrounds.

The Literacy San Antonio team is working with a large number of community stakeholders to create a collaborative mechanism for people with limited literacy skills and for those with ESOL

needs so they will gain the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce and their families will move toward self-sufficiency and an improved quality of life.

The mechanism will be a life-long learning network that is coordinated by the literacy coalition.

This collaborative effort includes: • Adult Literacy • English as a Second Language • Family Literacy • Workforce Skill Development • Health Literacy • Computer Literacy • Correctional and Re-entry Programs • Financial Literacy

These activities will impact every geographic location in the Greater Bexar County area and every sector of the community.

They are critical to long term economic prosperity.

The first of several community planning meetings organized

by Literacy San Antonio was held on February 5th and over sixty community organizations participated. These sessions will continue through the spring resulting in a clear community plan to guide our efforts towards achieving 100% literacy through 100% community engagement.

Literacy Day at the Texas State Capital took place on February 12th and was a resounding success. LSA team members from JLSA participated in the rally along with literacy advocates from throughout the state.

Placement Corner Online Placement begins soon; here’s how it works for you Online Placement is just around the corner…April 1 through April 15, 2009!

Spring has arrived and along with the change in seasons means it is time to plan for your upcoming placement. So, whether you are a Provisional/New Member, First Year Active or a seasoned league member, get ready for a great 2009-2010 league year!

What is placement?

A member’s placement is the assigned committee of their choice to fulfill the majority of their volunteer hours throughout the year. Placements include Placed, Appointed and Elected positions, and can be classified as in-league

(Membership Development and Marketing Councils), fundraising (Fund Development Council) or community (Community Council) positions.

All Placed positions will be available during the Placement sign-up process from April 1 - April 15.

How do I sign up for Online Placement?

To register, go online to www.jlsa.org and click on the “members login” button. Under the “Personal Reminders” section of your member homepage, you’ll find a link to online placement.

Click on the link and you will be able to sign up for Placement opportunities by ranking in order of preference your

selections for the upcoming year.

Remember that all Active members and Provisional/New Members are required to sign up for a placement for the upcoming year, so please mark your calendars. If you have any questions about online placement, please contact placement@jlsa.org.

Creative giving Annual Fund Campaign offers variety of ways to participate When Mary Harriman founded The Junior League in 1902, her Junior League friends, including Eleanor Roosevelt, reached out to children who worked 10 to 15 or more hours a day in the sweatshops of the Lower East Side of Manhatten. The children suffered from hunger, overcrowded and unsanitary housing conditions, little or no medical care, illiteracy and violence, among other social ills.

Today, The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc. is still battling most of these same issues, and more. And we have rarely needed your support as much as we do now.

Round Up Your Dues with an Annual Fund Gift. This is a favorite way both active and sustaining members give in March. Active members can “round up” their dues of $163 to $200 with a $37 gift to the Annual Fund in March, while Sustainers can “round up” dues from $73.00 to $100 with a $27 Annual Fund gift.

Can’t write that big check? How about a pledge? A number of our members give a set amount monthly through filling out an Annual Fund Pledge Card, available at www.jlsa.org. It’s easy.

Just decide the amount you want to give monthly, make your first donation, and you’re done. By the end of the campaign, it adds up!

The Junior League has an amazing group of women who volunteer every Monday at the Southwest Mental Health Center (SMHC) to make a difference in each child’s life.

As a team they educate, promote literacy, and connect with each child at the center.

Their goal is to create an enjoyable environment and utilize positive encouragement to help these children gain confidence and a strong feeling of self worth.

SMHC is an organization that has for over 120 years provided care to children with mental, emotional or behavioral problems. These children are supported in an effort to overcome the disabling effect of mental illness and improve their ability to function successfully at home, school and in the community.

unteers organize fun activities, read educational books, and make snacks with each child at the center. Each week’s activities incorporate a different theme on various topics such as Fall Leaves, Pumpkin Patch, Christmas Trees, Pigs & Farm Animals. The children also enjoy healthy and creative snacks made for each child at the center that night. Our Junior League volunteers use their creative and artistic abilities to develop lesson plans that provide an excellent learning experience for each child.

It’s about the Giving, the Commitment, the Women On March 27th, we will take an evening to celebrate JLSA’s 85 years of service to San Antonio. The Junior League of San Antonio has made a lasting impact on our community through the programs and projects our volunteers have developed. But we have had an even greater impact through the women we have trained and developed to serve in the community.

Junior League membership is meant to be a lifelong membership. Many of our members have used their skills to assist and lead other great organizations in our city. Many Leaguers are active members and leaders of The Charity Ball Association, Battle of Flowers Association, Rotary, The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, various nonprofit Boards, and employed by local non-profit agencies.

These women, while they work with different organizations, are members of The Junior League of San Antonio. They live the mission of The Junior League—To promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve the community through the effective action of trained volunteers. What a great gift the Junior League has given to San Antonio.

We are excited to celebrate this anniversary milestone and we look forward to the challenges ahead. As we head into the future, we know the world will change and we have made organizational changes that will allow JLSA to flex and change with the times. The Junior League of San Antonio Endowment Fund will allow us to work toward our goal of financial independence. Transfer Spotlight: Busy year for JLSA newcomers Greetings from the Transfer CoChairs Audrey Bertagnoli and Coco Anderson. With a dynamic league such as ours, it’s no wonder that our calendar has been full of activities. In addition to monthly meetings and social events, the Transfer Committee has also been spotlighting various committees throughout JLSA, Inc. in order to provide our members with a better understanding of our league and the dedicated women who make this organization so successful.

In September the Transfer Committee focused on getting its members familiar with each other and the League. We hit the basics and by the end of the month we were ‘subscribed’ to Groupshare, signed up for Membership Credit Shifts, had our League photographs taken, and attended the first General Meeting.

Having enjoyed the Olé Preview Party in September, we were well on our way to gearing up for Olé Marketplace 2008 in October. We sold Raffle Tickets, completed sales shifts, attended Special Events, and shopped to our heart’s content!

In November the Transfer Committee caught up with the Sunshine Singers.

We had the pleasure of attending one of their many performances at the Inn of

Los Patios.

December had us getting into the spirit with the Special Events Committee and their festive events like the Holiday Mingle at the Shops of La Cantera and Transfers ennjoy an outing Breakfast with Santa.
