City Manager to address JLSA Make your plans for January 8! Make plans to be at our general membership meeting in January where members will have the opportunity to hear from the City Manager of San Antonio, Sheryl Sculley. Sheryl Sculley became San Antonio’s City Manager in November 2005 with 31 years of local government experience. As the City’s chief executive officer, she managers a full-service municipal government corporation as directed by policies of the City Council. She oversees an annual operating and capital budget of more than $2 billion that serves a community of more than 1.3 million residents and 430 square miles. Ms. Sculley supervises the activities of all City departments that include more than 12,000 employees. In her two years as City Manager, she has been extremely busy! She has initiated major changes within the City organization. Ms Sculley as reorganized structures, developed balanced budgets,
appointed numerous key employees, and recommended and implemented key service upgrades for local citizens. Ms Sculley has a Bachelor of Science degree from Ball State University, a Masters of Public Administration fro Western Michigan University, and the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government from Harvard University. Ms Sculley is involved in numerous organizations within the community and has received numerous honors including the 2005 National Academy of Public Administration Fellow and the 2005 Arizona Woman of the Year by Arizona Woman Magazine. We are honored to have Ms Sculley speak to our membership. The meeting is open to all members: provisional, active and sustainer. Make your plans to join us on the 8th of January at 7:00 pm.

For many people the start of a new year means the opportunity for a new beginning...the opportunity to make a change, the opportunity to start over. Many people choose the New Year to begin a
lifestyle change like working out at the gym or going on a diet. Many others commit to add something, change something, or quit something. The promise of a new year brings hope….the hope that tomorrow will be a better and brighter day. As Junior League members, we are committed to the HOPE for our community’s future. We have the opportunity to provide a ray of hope for the thousands of people we interact with each day during our Junior Continued on Page 2

League volunteer time. For the thousands we serve, we are their hope…..their promise of tomorrow. Whether that hope is in the form of a hot meal for a senior, a listening ear for an unwed pregnant teen, a lap and soothing voice and story for a troubled child, or a flower garden that is appealing to a child that is in an unknown place away from home; we provide the Hope that everything can be all right. In the distant future, the hope we see for San Antonio is a literate population. Literacy San Antonio will continue to roll forward during 2008. New and modified literacy projects will begin June 1. The literacy project committee will also continue to strategize and collaborate with other literacy-based agencies to collaborate on and work toward a “clearing house” of all city-wide literacy services. This web-based database will also be connected to a call center to service clients. A city-wide public awareness campaign is set to begin in the fall of 2008 to promote awareness of the problem of illiteracy and what the cost is to our city when people can’t read. Literacy San Antonio is a HUGE initiative, but when public, private, nonprofit, and government entities all get together, there are endless possibilities…Literacy San Antonio will help raise that next generation to a place of hope. Our Hope for San Antonio is the Promise of Tomorrow… Happy New Year!

Loved getting to take my toddlers to a meeting and get credit for it. THANK YOU! • Even though there was a mix up at the Food Bank, my 9 year old loved getting to go work with mommy on JLSA. She had a great time with the other children that were there. Offer more events where we can take our kids! • Loved the barge ride. The improvements planned are incredible! Do this event again! • Loved getting to visit a location I was already familiar with, but hadn’t been to
in a long time. Great to hear and see the progress. Empire and Majestic were a real treat! Best of all was to have Joci Straus to narrate all that went in to the restoration work of the theaters. December Meeting Feedback (Reprinted from December 12 E-blast) • Start the meeting on time. The January Meeting WILL start on time! I apologize for the late start! • Enjoyed the speakers and our kick off for Annual Fund. • Some of you said you had heard this information before. Our community projects are what we are all about….Community is one of three parts of our mission. • Bringing the Community to us is a good reminder of why our organization exists. • Thank you for your Annual Fund Contributions! We are at 1/3 of our goal. Our income is ahead of where we were at this time last year. • Per JLSA bylaws, voting has to occur in person and cannot be taken by email. We vote 4 times a year. This year it is September, December, January, and May. In January we will be voting on the Nominating Committee Slate. • We will look into bringing back the margarita machine! • Glad to have Olé update. Would have liked to hear Olé Financials! Thank you to our first year actives and transfers for being our December meeting hosts Thank you all for taking time out of your busy December schedules to attend the General Meeting! Our attendance at meetings so far this year is up over last year. We will plan for more tables and chairs for January! You also asked for more snacks. There is a limited budget available throughout the year for food at
our meetings because we want to give as much back to the community as possible. In January, placement showcase will occur before the general meeting at 6 pm. Come for appetizers and cash bar beginning at 5:30 pm. Even though the meeting ran longer than the others have so far this year, the meeting finished just 5 minutes later than the scheduled end time. You all said there was a lot of information presented in December. We will keep this in mind when planning for future meetings. Many of you said that you were unsure of the way the Annual Fund was presented. It is important that we tie everything we do back to the mission of the Junior League. Special visitors work with special children By Dorothy Korn Every Wednesday evening six Junior League members spend quality time with amazing children at the Southwest Mental Health Center (SMHC). As a team, they educate, promote literacy, and most importantly, connect individually with each child at the center. Their goal is to create a pleasant learning environment and utilize positive encouragement to help these children gain confidence and a strong feeling of self worth. SMHC is an organization that has for over 120 years provided care to children with mental, emotional or behavioral problems. These children are supported in an effort to overcome the disabling effect of mental illness and improve their ability to function successfully at home, school and in the community. Throughout their time, Junior League volunteers have learned that childhood mental health problems are common, real, painful and beatable! During their placement, Junior League volunteers read engaging sto-
ries, participate in educational arts and crafts, and provide snacks for the children. Each week’s activities incorporate a different theme on various topics such as summer fun, the zoo, sports, insects, and Veteran’s Day. Our Junior League volunteers use their creative and artistic abilities to develop lesson plans that provide an excellent learning experience for each child. SMHC Clinician Joanna Meek said that Junior League volunteers have touched the children’s lives through their patience, love, and kind nature. “Our kids benefit by observing these loving individuals that come into their environment and selflessly give of their time,” said Meek. “All children are wired to soak up what is happening around them. These children are especially attuned to the kind nature of the Junior League volunteers, the way they work together as a team, and the patience they demonstrate to get through a story or craft with children with challenges. These lessons are not lost. We know that the children emulate the positive behaviors being modeled for them.” Junior League volunteers are often
some of these children’s only visitors. “The kids look forward to the Junior League coming all day and express excitement about participating,” said a unit volunteer. “Junior League night has become an important part of the enrichment we offer our children during their brief or long term hospitalization,” said Meek. “Especially for our extended hospitalization patients, the predictability of anticipating a novel activity, a special snack, and the nurturing interaction of reading becomes an important part of what they look forward to in the week.” The children show their appreciation through kind words, hugs, and their sheer happiness. Some of the children’s comments were “I love the books and snacks,” “those are funny knock-knock jokes,” and “they are nice to me.” “The kids know that these volunteers are here by choice, not because it’s their ‘job’,” said Meek. “This helps to build their sense of being a worthwhile person, and fosters self-esteem. Many children have commented to me about their surprise and pleasure that these volunteers have come ‘just to see me!’” Special thanks to SMHC volunteers Melissa Baird, Natalie Garcia, Misty Hildum, Cindy Martin-Hajmasy, Dorothy Korn and Rene Roberts.

Annual Fund Drive kicks off with $30,000 goal As a member of the Junior League of San Antonio, Inc., you know the importance of the Junior League’s efforts in the community, and by being a member, you have contributed a great deal of your time to improve our city, one life at a time. Established in 2001, the JLSA Annual Fund was created to give our members and supporters the opportunity to also make an unrestricted financial gift to the League as well. The Annual Fund provides operating support to The Junior League of San Antonio, Inc. and allows us to sustain
our efforts throughout the community. By giving to the Annual Fund, you are ensuring that we can give 100% of the net proceeds of our fundraisers back to the community, that we can meet our day-to-day expenses, and that we can maintain and operate the League Office and The Bright Shawl. Strategic Planning group focuses on future of JLSA The Strategic Planning Committee has identified goals and priorities to ensure JLSA’s long-term success: Short-term Goal Meet or exceed annual plan goals of serving 33,334 people, investing $333,334 into the community, and increasing membership by 100 trained volunteers.

Any ideas on what the best placement for me would be? From Placement Puzzled Dear Puzzled, The best placement for you is the one that works best for your schedule and your interests. You may have a passion for working directly with a community agency that helps children, families, or the elderly. You may want the flexibility of a community placement that allows year round opportunities like SA Works. Or perhaps you want to gain new leadership skills by volunteering with an inLeague placement such as one of the fundraising event committees. You and the entire membership will have the opportunity to attend a placement information event before the January 8 General Meeting. The event begins at 6 pm. This is a perfect chance to learn more about each placement and ask those members involved in the placement as many questions as you want. Remember, the best placement for you is the one that complements all the reasons why you joined JLSA, Inc. and the one that helps you Make Your Mark!
