This is the time of our League year when we take care of the operational side of our organization. Our slate will be presented at our membership meeting which will give us a glimpse of our future. We will be introduced to those who are willing to move our League into a continued strong direction. Thanks so much to the Nominating committee for their service in selecting our future. We will also have our first reading of the budget. The Finance committee is always looking for ways to spend less on our internal budget. We have tried, again, to spend less, but also continue to provide our membership a smooth running League that is able to operate seamlessly. Many thanks to the Finance committee for struggling to make tough decisions relating to our internal and especially our external budget. Meeting the requests of all of our agencies is always a challenge, so thank you for locating those agencies that needed our support the most this year. Our treasurer, Dawn Wood, has done an incredible job. We can all feel secure in knowing that Dawn has been diligent to be sure all of our money has been used properly and that she has put into place several programs that will help our fundraising committees track their expenses and revenue. Also at our meeting this month, we will receive an update on the progress being made at the Smithgall Gardens. I hope all of you are able to attend.
As I am writing this article, the details of the missing hiker, Meredith Emerson, have been revealed. It takes us back a minute, helps us realize the briefness of our lives and shows us the evil that lives in this world. There are feelings of hopelessness, anger and fear. And yet it brings to us commitment and perseverance; a time to reach out, a time to make a difference. While we are unable to change the unspeakable injustice she suffered, there are those in our community who suffer and need our help daily. Those needs we can meet, here and now. It is the reason I am proud to be surrounded by this organization of women. We may have our moments of being a little self absorbed, but in that time of need, we as women, come together to comfort, console and bear one another’s burden.
Alice Paul made a difference almost 100 years ago. She was one who led the fight for a woman’s right to vote. She was diligent, committed, and in turn, impacted all of our lives. Please remember, February 5, is a day to go and vote. What an injustice it would be, for Paul to have suffered so that we could have this opportunity, and throw it away. It is our chance, and our duty as American women, for our voices to be heard. Be sure and vote and then come to the History Center for our membership meeting.
May we continue to be lights in our community through our leadership and volunteerism.

Join Us to Get Fit and Stay Fit! Join Us to Get Fit and Stay Fit!
Did you have a New Year’s resolution to get fit in 2008? Need some motivation? Join us for the Consumers Life Get Fit Stay Fit 5K Corporate Run/Walk hosted by the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce. The Junior League is sponsoring two teams – one for active members and one for sustainers.
The 5K is scheduled for Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Riverside Military Academy. Registration begins at 6 p.m., and the race starts at 7 p.m.
To help you prepare, the Georgia Mountains YMCAis offering a free membership to participants during the 8 weeks leading up to the race (Jan. 24 –March 19) plus free weekly training programs led by local experts. At the race, awards will be given for the fastest runners in different age categories, the fastest teams and a team spirit award. But, don’t think you have to be a runner to participate; walking is strongly encouraged! And, even if you don’t want to walk or run, come out and cheer on our teams and help us win the team spirit award!
The entry fee is $15 until Feb. 29, and $20 from March 1 – 20. Proceeds benefit children’s programs in Hall County. To register, fill out an application at the League office or the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce. I have so many favorites but as I was thinking about this I thought it would be fun to go back in time when Christina and Julie were in school and it was a tradition for all the kids to come to our house the daythe yearbooks were given out in middle and high school for Yearbook signing and Homemade Ice cream. OH! yes, and homemade chocolate chunkcookies. But we had our own secret cookie recipe. Theice cream recipe we always used was the Basic Vanilla Ice Cream with its many variations because we made 6 freezers full of ice cream each year. It was the most fun for the kids, the faculty that came with them, and most of all for me, Christina and Julie. Perennials makes everyone a hero.
You know, we all join Jr. League for dif ferent reasons. We all leave Jr. League with dif ferent feelings about the whole experience. It’s the unexpected pleasures like the relationships I’ve formed through Meals on Wheels that are the bonus. I’ve done Meals on Wheels most of the time I’ve been in the League. I look forward to seeing each of those people every week. We may not be able to bring them anything extra other than a smile, but even that matters. Making a difference in someone else’s life is the greatest gift I could ever receive. I’ve taken extra food and supplies to some during a time of need, I’ve been to some of their funerals and taken some of them to funerals. Most of all, I’ve formed relationships that I will always cherish. This experience wouldn’t have happened without Jr. League, but it will continue because of the difference it has made in my life.

I’m glad to hear everyone had a great time at the in-home meetings. They were not only interesting, but also very fun. What a great way to start off the year! Immediately after the March general membership meeting, we will have a March Social. This will give everyone an opportunity to mingle and get to know each other better. It will be at a local restaurant (TBA). Everyone will be responsible for their own food/drink. More details to come in the next League Log.
Try to set a little extra time aside after the March meeting. It will be a lot of fun!
