A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT Looking back on my years in the Junior League, I have so many wonderful memories. Great friendships, the generosity of our community, the art of fundraising, the fulfillment of volunteering, lots of laughter and pride in taking part in giving back.

Giving back to our community is something the Junior League of Gainesville-Hall County does best. This will be an exciting year as we begin our initiative to Reduce Childhood Obesity through a program called Kids in the Kitchen. Through a permanent exhibit at INK (Interactive Neighborhood for Kids) and the Kids in the Kitchen “On the Road” program, Kids will learn how to eat healthier, exercise more and have a better self body image.

Speaking of community impact, many of our members have been very busy this summer behind the scenes. Our two fundraisers are only a few months away, with Thrift Sale right around the corner. You’ll want to plan on attending the “Harvest Hoedown” Thrift Sale Preview Party on Thursday October 1. We are excited to announce that this year the party will include music from Allen Nivens and the live auction will return. Reserved tables will be available, so bring you friends and family out to eat, drink, shop and raise money for the over 40 organizations that we help support.

The Harvest Thrift Sale is set for Saturday October 3. What an amazing opportunity to work together as a league and make an impact on our community. With the current economy, we expect a record crowd. Let’s all try to increase our donations so the many families in our community who come to Thrift Sale will have more opportunities to purchase items their families need.

And let’s not forget that Charity Ball will be here soon! Mark your calendars for December 12th at the Chattahoochee Country Club. The Co-Chairs have begun working with local civic organizations to sponsor Belles. Please support the Belles and make plans to attend this great night!

At the request of many of our members, we are expanding the League Log to include more information on our initiatives, community impact and upcoming events. To increase communication with our members the new League Log will be published bi-monthly and we will send out a weekly email with current information that may be time sensitive. The website will also include a current calendar and information on work shifts, done-in-a day projects and much more.

I am looking forward to working with you all this year and will see you on September 1st at the Elks Lodge on Riverside Drive for our general membership meeting.

Vision Statement The Junior League of Gainesville-Hall County is committed to making Northeast Georgia a better place for children and families.

Acting as a catalyst for positive change, we seek new opportunities to impact our community.

Kids in the Kitchen Back to School Bash Initiative to Reduce Childhood Obesity with Project of Focus Kids in the Kitchen Over the past ten years, there has been a dramatic increase in childhood obesity in the GainesvilleHall County community. Seeing a great need for the education and enhancement of the nutritional knowledge of the children within our community, the 2008-2009 Board of Directors voted and approved Kids in the Kitchen to be the project of focus for the 20092010 League year and future years to come. With childhood obesity and diabetes becoming more prevalent, there is a need to educate children and parents to make healthier choices to prevent complications in the future. Through Kids in the Kitchen, the Junior League will provide education programs and demonstrations through a partnership with Interactive Neighborhood for Kids (INK) and J&J Foods. The League is extremely excited about the awesome opportunity and looks forward to making an impact within the lives of the children of Gainesville-Hall County.

The Kids in the Kitchen Committee, chaired and co-chaired by Liza Chapman and Staci Vinton, has been busy planning activities for the upcoming 2009-10 Junior League year. Events include participating in the educational programs and the construction of the demonstration kitchen at INK. Most recently, members of the committee set-up and staffed a booth at the 2nd Annual United Way Back to School Bash on Saturday, August 8th at the Georgia Mountain Center. Over 1,000 Hall County students and parents were present to receive back packs and school supplies and educational information from the agencies represented at the event. Many under-privileged children received the necessary tools to start of the new school year.

The KIK committee instructed children on what is considered an appropriate lunch and healthy snacks with a demonstration activity. The children who visited the booth also received identification tags for their book bags to list their name, school, and emergency contact information. Many of the children and parents where very excited about the upcoming events that the KIK committee members are planning in the next few months and signed up for the KIK informational emails.

The committee members are looking forward to participating and partnering with United Way for next year’s Back to School Bash where more children will be impacted the Junior League’s Kids in the Kitchen Imitative. 2009 THRIFT SALE Our Thrift Sale Committee has been working really hard this summer to provide the foundation for a successful Thrift Sale. In the hard economic times, we have a great opportunity to reach out to our community in a positive way. We need the positivity and support of each of our League members to Keri Smith gather great quota, be willing to work really hard during Sale Jennifer Martin Week, and have great attitudes on the big day! We want to thank our great committee for all of the hard work that they have already put in this summer. We would also like to thank all of our League members who have been working hard this summer to make this year’s Sale the best ever! If you should have any questions regarding Thrift Sale, please feel free to contact Keri Smith or Jennifer Martin. We would be happy to assist you. IMPORTANT REMINDERS *League members are responsible for bringing in a Quota of $150 of “Thrift Sale Priced” merchandise to the GMC between Sunday, September 27th and Tuesday, September 29th. All quota must be priced with a Sharpie and masking tape according to the pricing sheet and put away by 8:00 PM on September 29th. Please bring a minimum of 10 bags and 3 boxes with your Quota. *Remember no books or stuffed animals and nothing priced under $.25! *Be “PRIZE GIRL” this year! Clean out your house and call family and friends to see if they have any donations. The largest amount of quota will win you the title! *If you stored any of your Quota in the storage unit this summer please remember to work 30 minutes extra during a General Workshift putting away merchandise. * Any workshift or Sale Day changes must be submitted in writing to Jennifer or Keri. You are responsible for letting us know who your replacement is if you cannot work your assigned times. * Designer Corner is Back for Thrift Sale and will allow you to donate up to $30 of your quota in NAME BRAND CLOTHING and accessories. It will be housed in the New Shop and will have its own price list. All donations to Designer Corner will be collected at the check in table when you sign in for your Quota. We need to pay special attention to the following items and make sure they are THROWN AWAY and not placed in the arena for re-sale: recalled children’s products, particularly cribs and play yards; children’s products that may contain lead such as children’s jewelry and painted wooden or metal toys; flimsily made toys that are easily breakable into small parts; toys that lack the required age warnings.

The General Workshift Committees will be responsible for sorting these items, but I want everyone aware of the potential dangers of these items.

IMPORTANT CHANGE The Thrift Sale Committee has been working very hard these past several months to save money and grow more efficient.

One way we have improved our bottom line is reducing the amount of printing and postage we spend. You will now find the Price sheet and Quota sheet posted on the website 4 League Log

under “Thrift Sale Information.” You still need to turn in a completed quota sheet when you drop off your quota (September 27th - September 29th), but we hope this will make it easier to access for everyone. Also, you will find your workshift schedule and job responsibility on the website as well.

Sustainer 2007 One of Cindy’s favorite memories of Thrift sale took place during the first year we started charging a dollar to get in as she was working the door. There were of course hundreds of people waiting to get in and the 3rd guy in line walks up to Cindy and hands her a $100 dollar bill. She just looked and him and said – “are you kidding me?” And he said, “Sorry this is all I have.” Cindy responded by telling him he needed to borrow a dollar from someone because she was not making change with 300 people pushing to get in. So a lady starts yelling at him because he was holding up the line and the other shopper said give him a dollar so he could get in, all the while yelling at him. It was pretty funny!!

Sustainer 2008 One of Kelly’s favorite Thrift Sale memories was when Hurricane Katrina occurred. The League decided to take-in donations from League members of clothes. She spent a couple of days sorting through clothes from the 70’s and 80’s. She had never seen so many clothes in one room in a pile to be sorted through in her life and it really made her laugh to see some of the clothes people wore. Her other favorite thing about Thrift Sale is being there when the doors open and you can hear the people thundering down the hall towards the Arena.

Barbara Griffeth

Sustainer 1999 Barbara’s favorite memories of Thrift Sale revolve around Preview Party. She loved being able to shop early and spend time going through all of the items. She also remembers a funny moment when what was referred to as a mountain of teddy bears collapsed off a small table all over the floor while trying to set-up.

Sue Delong

Sustainer 1993 Sue’s Thrift Sale memory was when she was on the Executive Board, who were responsible for making announcements at the Thrift Sale. When it came time for her turn to make the announcements, she is not sure if the Thrift Sale shoppers understood anything she was saying with her British accent.

She also found some great deals on some collectable items.

Sustainer 1984 When Cindy was in the League, Thrift Sale lasted two days and her favorite Thrift Sale memory was when she was Treasurer and got to count the piles, and piles of money with Kathy Mathis in the upstairs room.

We hope you’re as excited as we are to begin the 2009-2010 League year! As everyone starts their new placement (or returns to their familiar one), here are some important DO’S AND DONT’S we all need to remember: DON’T...JUST SAY ‘SURPRISE’... Contact your assigned agency BEFORE showing up to schedule any required orientation as well as to make specific arrangements for the days and times of your visits. It is important to make this initial contact before arriving for your first visit so that you will know what to do when you arrive and your agency will be prepared. Some agencies require orientations or background checks that need to be completed in advance of placement visits.

DON’T WAKE UP ON MONDAY & DECIDE...‘THIS SEEMS LIKE A GOOD WEEK TO GO TO CAMP’... If an agency offers different placement opportunities, such as weekly camps or quarterly schedules, make sure to schedule the specific time-period for your placement.

Showing up without prior notice leaves the agency unprepared to utilize your time to their full advantage.

DO REMEMBER... OUR AGENCIES LOVE KIDS BUT LOVE FOR US TO PLAY WITH OUR OWN KIDS AT HOME! Please don’t take your kids with you for your volunteer hours.

It puts a hardship on the agency to provide for the extra kids and is uncomfortable for them to explain to others who pay for the experience. Taking your own kids is both inappropriate and embarrassing to the League. Our members are ‘trained volunteers’ so let’s make sure we show it.

DO...REMEMBER TO ANNOUNCE YOUR ARRIVAL! To make sure there is a record of your efforts, be sure to sign-in at the agency in the log provided for League volunteers. If there is not an existing log, make arrangements with the agency to provide one. We want to make sure everyone knows we are making a difference in the community.

DO...WATCH THE CLOCK. Make sure to be on time. Hopefully, this speaks for itself. Just as important, don’t get behind on your hours. Get started with your hours as quickly as possible so you’re not trying to get all your hours at the last minute. If you’re getting behind or having trouble, contact your placement advisor and/or agency to work out a solution. You must complete a full 40 hours to fulfill your yearly placement obligation. Keep your advisor up to date on a regular basis of the hours you’ve completed and, when you’re finished, I bet she’ll give you the rest of the year off!

DON’T...WEAR YOUR HEELS TO THE CREEK! You wouldn’t wear your jammies to the Grammys so please dress appropriately for your placement.

DO...GIVE YOURSELF A PAT ON THE BACK. The 40 hours you contribute each year makes a tremendous impact in our community, the agencies we work with, the people we assist, and to the League! If you have any questions about your placement this year, tell us IMMEDIATELY. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make sure you have completed, signed and returned a Placement Agreement. If you attended May dinner, your Placement Agreement Form showing your placement as well as your Charity Ball or Hospitality committee assignment was available at that time. If you haven’t done so, please sign and return this form to the League office or to Kay Parks, Placement Chair. If you did not receive this form, have lost it or the dog ate it, please let us know ASAP! DO...PLAY ON YOUR COMPUTER AND PUNCH THE PHONE... Your placement advisor is there to help you. Let her do her job and call or send her a message if you have any questions, problems or concerns with your placement. She needs to hear from you so communicate with her or one of us.

DO...CLEAN OUT YOUR EARS! What? Take these suggestions seriously and this year will be a piece of cake.

DO... RELAX. ENJOY. HAVE FUN... We understand that...Life Happens. It happens to us too. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication!

PLACEMENT SPOTLIGHT

As far as placements go, Quinlan Art Camp is certainly one worth volunteering for! This is my second placement with Quinlan, and every year is more fun than the last. The children who attend camp are very creative and are true artists in the making. Helping them with their projects actually makes me want to create something beautiful myself. It is certainly rewarding and a great change of pace from my crazy schedule to be able invest in the childrens’ lives, all while getting messy and assisting them with whatever piece they are working on at the moment. I highly recommend Quinlan Art Camp as a placement if you’ve never tried it. Who knows, they may inspire the artist in you too!

Emeritus Advice to the Provisional Class We asked a few of our Emertius members for some words of wisdom and advice that they would give our provisional class as they got started in the Junior League.

I am so excited to be working with the Provisional class as my placement this year! We have a great group of 29 girls, with a variety of careers and backgrounds, who will each be such a great addition to the League.

We kicked off the year with a Welcome Dinner on August 18th at the home of Shelley Davis, Assistant Chair of Membership Lindsay Wells Development. Shelley, thank you for your Membership hospitality and sharing your beautiful home Development with us! It was a fun night with great food, friends and conversation. Many thanks also to our committee members, Jennifer Hollingsworth and Paige Richardson, for all of their help. The Provisionals will complete a Done in a Day Project on October 9th and 10th by helping with the Kids in the Kitchen booth at Mule Camp Market. Please stop by and see us and check out this amazing new project for the League! And please join me in welcoming our Provisionals to the Junior League of Gainesville-Hall County!

Sustainer-Belle Reception, Tuesday, December 8th More details to come, but we wanted to make sure you saved the date for this year’s Charity Ball Belles and Sustainers Reception. This year’s event will be from 5-7 pm at the home of Mrs. Cindy Randolph.

Perennials Picks Mary Beth Begley (Sustainer) enjoys the Lazy Man’s Roast (Page 186). It is her go-to dish because it is quick and simple, yet never fails to be delicious and perfectly cooked each time she prepares it. The Lazy Man’s Roast has a short list of ingredients (two) and has menu & wine pairings listed in Perennials.

Beth Abernathy (Sustainer) loves entertaining with Shrimp Sea Island (Page 24) for tailgates and other parties. It is wonderful, not only because it is delicious and easy, but because it can be made ahead. Beth’s tailgaters always rave over the Shrimp Sea Island.

Yearbook change

In order to reduce overhead with printing and postage, we will no longer be printing and mailing a yearbook. All the updated addresses, phone numbers, pictures and information can be found in the Member Directory on the website. However, if you would like to receive an updated hard copy of the phone and address directory, please call the League Office and we will be happy to mail you one.

Save The Date Save the date for the 58th Annual Charity Ball Saturday, December 12th from 8:00-12:30 at the Chattahoochee Country Club Platinum Band will be the entertainment There will be a shuttle service providing guests safe rides home.

DUES, DUES, DUES…WHAT DO MY DUES DO?

Have you ever found yourself asking this question as you write your check for $300 (or $70 for sustainers) each year?

Do you wonder what your money is spent on? Our dues go entirely to cover the Junior League’s operating expenses-the cost of keeping the League in business. Last year’s expenses totaled $77,536.57.

And what exactly are you paying for? Here are a few examples. Out of your $300, we remit $35 on each member’s behalf to AJLI, $40 covers May Luncheon, $10 is for a Thrift Sale T-shirt, and $125 covers your Charity Ball ticket. We pay $1.42 annually to cover postage and mailing materials, and another $1.12 for stationery and office supplies. $15.03 is applied to office rent and it costs $2.68 for us to make phone calls. It costs $0.77 to maintain our office equipment and $3.47 to run our website. In addition, it costs $23.85 annually per member to print League Log. We each pay $2.30 for Membership Development and $2.27 for Sustainer Relations. $14.08 goes to salaries to pay the people in the office. We pay $5.00 to insure us and $18.63 for legal and accounting services-to make sure that we are accounting for all of the money we raise and allocating it to the community correctly.

When we add in the other administrative costs to keep us

going, we wind up with a significant shortfall for each member.

In these tough economic times, everyone is cutting back and the Junior League is no exception. We are already taking steps to save money by utilizing our website and email instead of printing and mailing as many items.

THANK YOU FOR PAYING YOUR DUES and paying them in a timely fashion. As you can see, they are critical for the Junior League to run efficiently, not to mention for us to be able to turn the lights on. Your dues make it possible for us to pay for the things that support the Junior League. With our members covering our internal expenses, we are able to do more for our community!
