t has been an honor to serve as the DallaCite editor for the 2019 2020 year. The meetings, phone calls, organizing, photo ops and content creation have all been worth it. I have been a member of the JLD since moving here in July 2016, and the thing I like most is how much we improve our community through voluntarism.

Our members take time away from their personal and

professional priorities to develop themselves and serve Dallas — building for now and the future.

OUR MISSION The Junior League of Dallas is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

I

t has been my great privilege and honor to serve as the 2019 - 2020 President of the Junior League of Dallas. We have been tirelessly committed to our mission: to promote voluntarism, to develop the potential of women and to improve our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

One of our greatest assets is the space we create to develop

and grow the women who dedicate their time and resources to serve our community. When I joined the League in 2008, I was a young attorney getting started in my career and looking for a place to give back. For the past 11 years, the League has been with me through several life phases, and each time there has been a place for me to serve, learn and grow. The beautiful thing is that this is not just my story. It is the story of every member.

Among our nearly 5,000 members, we have women from every phase and walk of life.

We have recent college graduates just starting their careers. We have professionals in almost

The COVID-19 outbreak has certainly affected the way we serve the community this year, but I know that staying true to our mission will keep us going as we navigate these uncertain times.

As we look forward, I encourage you to remember what first drew you to our League and think about why you still serve. Let those thoughts be at the forefront of your mind when you are serving. In every interaction, we have the power to bring change, and the smallest act of kindness can have the largest impact, even though it might not seem like it at the time.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” I believe that this sentiment is what the League lives by. What we do matters. So be encouraged in your giving. Be encouraged in your serving. Be encouraged in your leading. Thank you for your support this year, and here’s to brighter horizons for all of us in the future.

PRESENTATIONS In July and August, Researchers present their assigned agencies’ applications to the full committee. There is a question and answer session so all can understand each request and how it might fit into the overall Community Program.

S tep 6 DELIBERATION In September, the full Research and Development Committee, along with the President, PresidentElect, Community VP and Financial VP work together to determine the final list. Although only the strongest of applications make it to this step, the group must still make tough decisions given budget and volunteers available.

In May and June, JLD Researchers visit every applicant agency to learn more about their application, opportunities for JLD volunteers and how the grant monies requested would be used.

Researchers report back to their subcommittees and, based on feedback, refine their reports for presentation to the full committee. This step helps prepare Researchers to answer questions and present a complete report to the full committee.

S tep 7 COMMUNITY PROGRAM APPROVED In the fall, the committee’s recommendation goes to the Leadership Council and then to the full membership for approval. Agencies are notified after approval and are formally recognized at our Community Grants Presentation in the spring.

2 02 0 S ustainer of the Y ear This year, we recognized Bess Enloe as the 2020 Sustainer of the Year.

“The League is so proud to call Bess one of our own, and we are honored that she credits her League training with teaching her much of what she knows about collaborating with people for a noble and worthwhile cause,” said Sustainer President Ellen Bryant.

Enloe joined the JLD in 1972 and held a variety of leadership roles as an Active member, including 1978 - 1979 Ball Chair, and served on the Board of Directors from 1978 - 1980.

As a Sustainer, she has channeled her League training and her passion for the arts into the development of Dallas’ Arts District. Long before the AT&T Performing Arts Center became a reality, Enloe saw the need for the facility and helped spearhead the capital campaign that built the Center. She currently serves as a Life Trustee of the Center and Co-Chair of the Capital Campaign Committee.

Enloe is also a Life Trustee of the Dallas Theater Center, where she previously served as President and Chairman of the Board and now sits on its Artistic Advisory Committee.

“Without Bess, there would be no AT&T Performing Arts Center; the Dallas Theater Center (DTC) would be a much smaller provincial theater company than the Tony Award-winning company that we are today,” said Kevin Moriarty, DTC’s Artistic Director.

In addition to her leadership in the Arts District, Enloe is a past chairman of the SMU Meadows School of the Arts Executive Board and currently sits on that Board. Bess has been recognized many times for her work, including The Arts Community Alliance (TACA) Silver Cup Award (1993), the Texas International Theatrical Arts Society (TITAS) Award for Excellence (2007) and the Dallas Historical Society Award for Excellence in the Arts (2009).

In 2014, she was honored at the Meadows at the Meyerson event benefitting SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts, and in 2015 she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from SMU. “I am very grateful and honored to receive this award,” Enloe said. “The Junior League has a special place in my heart. As an Active member, I learned all about our city. I learned all about what was really important in our city, where the needs were…the League has made a huge impact on the city of Dallas in every area.”

For Community Program agencies, remaining grant money was quickly paid out, so they could use the funds where they were most needed. The League also shared opportunities to support agencies virtually, even as volunteer placements were suspended.

The League quickly distributed a total of $24,000 from the Community Assistance Fund to eight agencies serving the most vulnerable in our community. These grants supported a variety of critical needs, including food delivery to senior citizens, cleaning and staffing of emergency shelters and housing for domestic abuse victims and their families.

Throughout the years, the League has identified issues affecting the most vulnerable segments of our community and created solutions to serve those populations. Our legacy began with a group of 40 women in 1922. Together, they set out to tackle issues on the front lines and improve the lives of women and children in Dallas. During 2021 – 2022, we will celebrate 100 years of growing women leaders who address Dallas’ most critical needs. Over the past century, we have grown into an organization of nearly 5,000 women who have used their League training to improve our city in countless ways.

In preparation for the next 100 years, the League established the JLD Centennial Endowment Foundation in 2018. Chaired by past JLD President Connie O’Neill, it will fund leadership and volunteer training efforts, with a goal of raising $25 million over the next 10 years. Past JLD President Lyda Hill pledged a lead gift of $5 million in 2018 to establish the endowment, with an additional $5 million challenge grant.

Established in 2006, Kids in the Kitchen

(KITK) combats childhood obesity by teaching youth healthy eating and lifestyle choices. This eight-week after-school program shows students how to prepare nutritious meals, work safely in the kitchen and incorporate exercise into daily life.

This year, KITK served hundreds of kids across Dallas County before school closures went into effect. With our presenting sponsor and partner UnitedHealthcare, we were able to work with nonprofit agencies to engage students through the “Super Food + Super Fitness = Super Kids” program - promoting a healthy, balanced mindset about nutrition and fitness.

Member T raining Opportunities For 98 years, JLD has been passionately committed to developing the potential of women and improving our community through trained volunteers. This year, members received 26,000 hours of experiential and formal training on issue-based community impact and leadership development, as well as opportunities to take on leadership roles big and small.

“Our goal is to create a space where members can try things without fear of failure — a space where they can meet and learn from women passionate about doing more for Dallas and being more for themselves and those in their lives,” said Brooke Bailey, JLD President.

This year, we welcomed speakers including Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson and a panel of Dallas ISD speakers who gave an insider view of the importance of public education in our city. Members also heard from nonprofit leaders Jan Langbein, a JLD Sustaining member and Executive Director of Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support, and Dr. Cheryl Jackson, Founder of Minnie’s Food Pantry.

Provisionals (first-year members) complete an intensive training course to learn about the League and build awareness of our community’s most critical issues. They heard from leaders at our partner agencies and toured four of those agencies last fall.

For Active and Sustaining members, we offer a range of learning opportunities. Focused sessions explored topics ranging from child poverty to becoming a citizen in a global world to the business of fashion as seen by a former Project Runway contestant. Two concentrated Training Tracks helped members build fundraising skills and explore diversity and inclusion, bringing in a wide range of speakers from the League and the community.

Our year-long T. Boone Pickens Leadership Institute helped 26 members build their existing strengths while enhancing their skills and fostering relationships that grow our leadership bench strength for the League and beyond.

Members also developed specialized skills and built League connections through our Special Interest Groups. This year, we launched new groups where members can learn about personal finance or practice their Spanish-speaking skills in an informal environment.
