CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF DALLAS 2021 2022 VOLUME 100

The Junior League of Dallas is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

2021 – 2022 Junior League of Dallas President

During our Centennial year, the impact was even greater as the JLD partnered with the City of Dallas’ Office of Arts and Culture and other community partners to raise over $1.4 million to support the rehabilitation of the Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House in South Dallas. After this year, the League will maintain the partnership with the Friends of Juanita Craft House to continue spreading the word of Ms. Craft’s transformational leadership and impact in Dallas.
As we close out this milestone year, I am humbled by the unwavering support of our members and donors who have stepped up consistently to help us live out our mission every day. The Junior League of Dallas continues to rise, and we are excited to bring another 100 years of service and strong leaders to our Dallas community.
MISSION STATEMENT
To be the premier organization to connect and develop women to improve the quality of life in the Dallas community.
VISION STATEMENT
For a century, the Junior League of Dallas has developed the potential of women, promoted voluntarism and shaped our city through the leadership of our trained volunteers. It was an honor to serve as President of the League during the 2021 – 2022 year as we celebrated the League’s continued devotion to Dallas and set a strong foundation for the future.
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT CHRISTA SANFORD
During my 15 years in the League, I have experienced firsthand the impact of the exceptional training, which has been transformative in all areas of my life. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve the League and community in this capacity. Throughout this year, we found numerous ways to celebrate our history while maintaining a clear focus on the future of the League and its impact on women and the Dallas community. To kick off the celebration, our Centennial Co-chairs Andrea Cheek and Margo Goodwin worked tirelessly to debut the JLD Centennial exhibit at the 2021 State Fair of Texas. This special moment at the Hall of State at Fair Park celebrated the League’s history and contributions to Dallas. It was remarkable to see how our organization and its impact has grown exponentially since our founding from just 40 original members in 1922 to an organization of over 4,400 women, representing a broad range of perspectives, backgrounds and experiences.
One of the reasons we are able to celebrate a century together is that we continue to learn and evolve to meet the needs of our members and the Dallas community. As we have lived through the second year of a global pandemic, I appreciate how our members have risen to the challenge, and we are still rising to meet the needs of our community, our families and the future of Dallas. In an environment that continued to change daily, the JLD once again gave over $1 million of funding to 39 agencies in our Community Program and through our Signature Projects.

When I joined the Junior League of Dallas, it was for friendship and collective impact. I wanted to join a group, where I could volunteer and be a part of something that is bigger than myself. I didn’t realize it at the time, but JLD would change my life. My story is not unlike most of our members. We join after college and want something more. We jump headfirst into volunteering, education seminars, planning events, joining a social group and making friends. We blink and then 10 years later, we have had a handful of different placements — each an opportunity where we have learned different skills and had a variety of experiences that mold us into a leader. This is how JLD leaves its legacy. The League molds women into leaders and champions for our community. Through our efforts, we make an impact in our community that is seen for generations. This quote from Maya Angelou, “If you’re going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can’t be erased” is the epitome of the JLD. Through this organization, generations of women have left a mark that cannot be erased. You see it spread across the Dallas landscape from Treescape Dallas in the 70’s and 80’s to the newly rehabilitated Juanita Craft Civil Rights House. It’s been a special honor to be the DallaCite Editor this Centennial year. And I am grateful for the entire Communications & Centennial Committees for their hard work and countless hours showcasing and celebrating our 100 years of impact. Working with each of you was a pleasure, and I thank you for your Idedication.amsoproud to be part of JLD and am excited to see what accomplishments the next 100 years will bring. In 2020, we announced our Centennial project, joining key organizations and community leaders to rehabilitate the home of Civil Rights Leader and Dallasite Juanita J. Craft. We’re especially proud that her home will soon be a place for all to learn about her place in Dallas’ history and civil rights. This year, we shared our history with more than 100,000 Texas State Fair visitors over 24 days at our Hall of State exhibit. We hosted our Centennial Milestones Luncheon and Centennial Gala, raising critical funds that will benefit our community for years to come. And, we welcomed over 450 League members from across the U.S. and Canada at the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) Conference in May.

Perhaps the thing we will most remember is how League members – across every generation – came together to honor our history and create an important foundation for our future. These connections are a true testament to our League’s “Legacy of Leadership and Devotion to Dallas.” It has been our great privilege to help honor the League’s first 100 years and we eagerly look forward to our next 100. Andrea and Margo
For those of us who were part of those earliest conversations, it’s amazing to see all we have accomplished in the spirit of these 100 years. We had no idea what the journey would bring – the time and talents of thousands of volunteers, a pandemic, an amazing Headquarters renovation and an archive of our history. This celebration is the culmination of so many hands, hearts and minds.
More than six years ago, the League began to talk about how to celebrate our Centennial year. We brought together a large group of members with deep roots in both our League and community. We talked not only about how best to commemorate this milestone, but also how to make a positive and lasting impact on the next 100 years.

A steering committee was formed, and with our Centennial Committee Advisors, they provided invaluable guidance and help. Since then, countless members, both long-time and new, have spent many hours planning for this year. In 2018, the Centennial Endowment Foundation was established to strengthen the League’s volunteer training and support services with a generous $5 million lead gift and $5 million matching gift from former JLD President Lyda Hill.
The exhibit was presented in partnership with the Sewell family and H-E-B/Central Market.
JLD ACCEPTS PRIDE OF TEXAS AWARD
The Junior League of Dallas was honored with the Pride of Texas Award during this year’s State Fair of Texas opening ceremony. The award is presented each year to an individual or group that has demonstrated the qualities that Texans are best known for: loyalty, friendliness, commitment, courage and, perhaps most of all, Ginapride.Armour Norris, Chairwoman for the State Fair of Texas’ Board of Directors noted the JLD’s role as “an advocate and champion for nonprofit organizations through the city” as she presented the award. In her acceptance, JLD President Christa Sanford spotlighted the League’s partnership with the City of Dallas and State Fair of Texas for its Centennial project to rehabilitate the Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House. 2021 was the first time in the State Fair of historyTexasthat the ribbonwascuttingdone by all women.

The JLD began in 1922 with a group of 40 women determined to make a difference. Women had received the right to vote two years prior, but opportunities outside the home were still few. The League provided a place for these women to grow their talents and give back to their city. Today, the JLD is over 4,400 women strong. This interactive experience at the Hall of State allowed patrons to see pieces of the League’s incredible history and leadership training from 1922 through present day. “The Centennial Committee and our members worked passionately to bring the history of the League back to life,” said Centennial Co-chair Andrea Cheek. “There are so many stories to be told, and it has been inspiring to see all of the work the Junior League of Dallas has done around Dallas over the last 100 years.”

GFIT, sponsored by Texas Instruments, served 6,781 students across the Dallas Independent School District through 42 educators from 37 schools ranging from elementary to high school. Educators received 41 grants equaling $86,881.23 of funding for innovation and positive change. This was all managed by 31 Junior League of Dallas GFIT volunteers who spent more than 1,860 hours to make a difference in the Dallas community.
The “G” in GFIT may stand for grants, but this year, it also stood for grit. Because of the pandemic, the GFIT Committee saw educators adjusting and responding to the changing needs of their students unlike ever before. This is best exemplified in the innovation seen in this year’s grant projects, centering on art of various mediums including dance, STEM, STEAM and literacy.
In partnership with UnitedHealthcare, KITK successfully resumed an in-person after school curriculum for the 2021 – 2022 year. KITK empowers youth to learn the preparation of healthy meals while educating children and their parents about nutrition and healthy food choices. This year, nine nonprofit agencies with over 700 students (Grades K-5) participated in the program.
Included in this year’s curriculum was an update to the recipes such as bagel fruit pizza and entertaining ways to stay physically active with a game called “pass the Priscillawatermelon.”Wood, 2021 – 2022 Kids in the Kitchen Chair, shared, “This year was an exciting year serving as KITK Chair as I am currently an employee of UnitedHealthcare. Helping people live healthier lives is a part of UHC’s mission, and I strongly believe that the KITK program is helping our Dallas educators introduce healthy habits and physical activity at a young age. I am so proud of both our participating agencies and the KITK Committee for their dedication to completing our first in-person program since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The feedback has been overwhelming, and it feels great to know that the League is making such a huge impact through KITK.”
Established in 2008 with a generous gift from the T. Boone Pickens Foundation, the program serves to grow the leadership skills of a selected annual class of our members through their participation in a 10-month development and strengths training course.
Some new changes this year included training around Predictive Index and re-incorporating a service project component. It was so wonderful to see all the ladies come together to strengthen their leadership skills and to help support the greater Dallas community.”

In March, 10 finalists, chosen from a record number of applicants from three Dallas ISD schools, competed in the annual speech competition. After the speeches concluded, the judges awarded a total of $40,000 in college scholarship funds.

Founded in 2013 by JLD, the Women LEAD (Learn • Excel • Achieve • Dream) scholarship program was created to assist female high school students in pursuing their dreams of higher education.

Today, over 400 members have participated. Graduates of the program leave motivated to impact the Dallas community and equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to bring positive and effective change.

JLD member Erica Person has volunteered with Scottish Rite for eight years, serving in a variety of positions. “Over the years I have met many lifelong friends, either other JLD volunteers or people from the community,” said Today,Person.the opportunities to volunteer at Scottish Rite range from creating positive experiences for patients and families by facilitating play and enrichment activities, such as biweekly arts and crafts project; to documenting the activities of hospital volunteers through a scrapbook and the award-winning volunteer newsletter, “Hearts and Hands,” published four times annually.

Musacchio agrees, “The consistent and stabilizing presence of JLD volunteers at Scottish Rite has created a dual legacy of service to both organizations, and for 100 years, both organizations have worked side-byside to nurture and strengthen the children and families of Dallas and the surrounding communities.”
Each week, the Musical Outreach volunteers gather at various assisted living and memory care facilities to perform. One of those facilities is Juliette Fowler Communities, a “continuum of care” in the Senior Living industry.

Agency Spotlight: Musical Outreach
AGENCY SPOTLIGHT
The opportunities to serve Scottish Rite have changed throughout the years, from volunteering in the gift shop to assisting the nurses with distributing snacks and linens, to helping organize and facilitate events for the patients and their families.

“In 1926, JLD brought their work and mission to the patients of Scottish Rite, establishing the state’s first occupational therapy department for children with disabilities and the first community volunteer placement for JLD members,” said Brittany Musacchio, Communications Specialist at Scottish Rite. “The program was so successful that it was later expanded to include music appreciation, art instruction, sewing and woodcrafts.”
Musical Outreach, known formerly as Musical Therapy, is a placement within the Arts and Culture Enrichment Issue Area and provides companionship, stimulation and entertainment for seniors in the Dallas area by presenting a musical program performed by our volunteers.
“In recent years, JLD volunteers have adapted to the ever-changing needs at Scottish Rite and assisted in preparations for Scottish Rite’s centennial celebration,” said Musacchio. “In honor of its milestone birthday, Scottish Rite for Children is renewing its commitment to another 100 years of providing the very best care to children with orthopedic conditions and learning disorders. Scottish Rite for Children is more than halfway toward its goal of raising $100 million in its first-ever capital campaign for patient care, research and expansion and renovation. Donations will allow Scottish Rite to continue its century-long tradition of ensuring cost is never a barrier to receiving the highest level of care.”
Rite for Children was founded in 1921 to provide superior medical care to children with polio. Around that same time, the first members of JLD were beginning their labor of love for the community. Today, Scottish Rite improves the lives of children by providing world-class medical care, facilitating innovative professional education programs and conducting cutting-edge research in the field of pediatric orthopedics.
For Jennifer Schultz, Musical Outreach volunteer since 2012, the volunteer experience is the highlight of her time with JLD. “The women in this placement have a heart for the senior community,” said Schultz. “We specifically choose music that most residents grew up listening to so we have the greatest impact while performing and trigger happy memories.”
For 100 years, JLD has been intertwined with organizations throughout the Dallas community, where volunteers spend their time in placements that spread joy. That joy can be heard echoing down the halls of countless assisted living and memory care centers in JLD’s longest-running volunteer opportunity, Musial Outreach.

Agency Spotlight: Scottish Rite for Children With the Centennial celebration of the Junior League of Dallas comes the celebration of the numerous community partnerships that have helped shape the League throughout the past 100 years. This year, we’re pleased to mark our Centennial alongside Scottish Rite for Children, JLD’s first agency Scottishpartner.
Residents may begin living in an independent living area and move to other areas of care as needed.
“The residents of Juliette Fowler Communities truly enjoy the performances of the Musical Outreach program,” said Laura Porting, Development Manager at Juliette Fowler Communities. “Many of our seniors live with us for years, sometimes decades. These seniors actually end up knowing many repeating volunteers and look forward to their performances each year! They recall their bright, shining faces and know they will provide a dynamic performance.”
“I love that the focus of the JLD is to educate women on the needs in the community, train them to develop their potential as leaders and help them to find ways to continue to make an impact after leaving Active membership.
What is one JLD memory or volunteer opportunity that made a difference to you?
“JLD helped shape my path by demonstrating the power of strong and dedicated women united in a shared purpose. I took this knowledge into many other settings — from organizing and supporting women’s groups inside corporations to community service collaborations and, ultimately, to Texas Women’s Foundation to marshall the collective power of women to make meaningful change in our region and state! JLD also offered me tremendous opportunities to learn leadership skills — whether as a Project Chair, a committee chair or Board member — and those skills have served me well throughout my career.”
WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP
Martinez joined the League in 2000 and served as an Active member of the Junior League of Dallas for 17 years. She spent her first five years with the League volunteering with Interfaith Housing, a former community partner, before serving as Interfaith Family Services Project Chair. She went on to hold numerous JLD leadership roles.
In celebration of 100 years of giving back to the community, JLD was honored to speak with Sustaining members who have paved the way for the next 100 years of women leaders in Dallas.

I love that the League offers a variety of ways for members to develop their potential and find the place for them that suits their skills and interests. No other organization does such a great job of training and educating women in this way. Additionally, you meet and befriend so many other women who share your common vision of helping and improving our community. I have learned about the needs in our community and gained so much knowledge from the wonderful women who are members of our League. I am applying that knowledge currently as I raise my family and volunteer in the community outside of the League.”
What do you love about JLD? How has the League helped shape your personal legacy?
“In the next 100 years, I hope the JLD continues its rich tradition of developing women to be leaders in the community and affect change. I hope we continue to contribute to Dallas in a meaningful way and produce leaders at the forefront of solving tomorrow’s problems. I hope we continue to learn from our past and maintain our reputation as the premier place to develop women leaders who want to help improve the quality of lives for the members of their community.”
“When I served as Community Vice President, I loved being involved in and educated about our wonderful agencies and the populations they serve. I also loved hearing about our volunteers and the individual impacts they are making daily across our community.
“What I love best about JLD are the generations of magnificent women I’ve gotten to know and work alongside in the community. JLD members are drawn to the organization because they genuinely want to make a difference and contribute their time and talents toward the greater good. It’s a unifying bond that is fundamental to the JLD experience.”

Dr. Kimberly Yamanouchi, Bettye Slaven, Diane Scovell and Junior League of Dallas Centennial Milestones Luncheon Co-chair Lydia Novakov

KIMBERLY J. YAMANOUCHI, M.D., M.P.H. Yamanouchi joined JLD in 1992 and was named Sustainer of the Year in 2016. An esteemed member of the medical community, Yamanouchi served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at UT Southwestern Medical Center for 25 years. Her devotion to serving the Dallas community is reflected through her many leadership positions, including currently serving on the Board of Camp John Marc, the Board of Trustees for Highland Park United Methodist Church, the Executive Board of Dedman College of Southern Methodist University, the Executive Board of the Senior Source and the Parkland Foundation Board. In addition, she previously served as a board member of Interfaith Housing, Genesis Women’s Shelter and Children’s Medical Center, among others. Yamanouchi’s legacy embodies JLD’s mission to train women and build life-long philanthropic leaders touching every corner of Dallas.
“What I love is the group of women who make up the JLD. When I moved to Dallas in 1989, I wanted to learn about my new city and make friends. After living in Dallas for almost 34 years, I can say that a majority of my friends have been the women I met through the JLD. Some I met in the first couple of years and many others over the past decades. These women are diverse, with a wide array of interests and passions. They are, without a doubt, the women that shaped Dallas into the dynamic and exhilarating city of the present. These friendships have helped my personal legacy as I serve on the Parkland Foundation Board, the Senior Source Board, the Camp John Marc Board and the JLD Sustainer Board as well as a myriad of other boards in the past. These same women have encouraged and motivated me to become an active community leader.”
“My first JLD placement in 1992 was being a counselor at Camp John Marc. I was teaching faculty at UT Southwestern as an anesthesiologist; however, I did not do pediatrics and was primarily involved with adults. Camp John Marc has a mission, ‘inspiring confidence for life’ through high-quality camping programs for children, teens and families. During my six years as a counselor, I witnessed how a single week of camp could truly inspire these young campers to stretch their imagination and that no physical ailment could limit their goals. I also developed friendships with many campers. I wasn’t the doctor in the white coat, I was the friend from Camp John Marc. I have been a board member for CJM for many years which is an honor and privilege that continues even now.”

The early 1940s marked the beginning of World War II where our members served in support roles, ranging from making Red Cross kits to nursing to working the USO Canteen which were required of them in addition to their League work.

1920s With its formation, the JLD concentrated on two main volunteer activities: HandicappedThe Shop and the Junior League Home for Convalescent Children. 1924 1924 - 1925 JLD membership had grown to 87 Active members, five Provisionals and four Transfers. The first Provisional course with a training requirement began in 1926. 1930 1930s In 1930, the JLD served 14,066 meals in three and a half months through the Salvation Army, furnished food and clothing to needy families and helped pay rent for unemployed.the 1940 1940s

In 100 years, the JLD has given $40 million in funding and nine million in volunteer hours to important causes across Dallas. It is a special place for women to flourish and impact Dallas’ most critical issues, including education, arts and cultural enrichment, violence intervention and poverty intervention.

TOCOMMITMENTPresident ANDDIVERSITYINCLUSION
It has been a great honor to serve as the Junior League of Dallas’ inaugural Diversity & Inclusion Vice President for the 2021 – 2022 year. This position is close to my heart and has brought my JLD journey full-circle. For my first leadership opportunity in the League, I served as the Diversity & Inclusion Committee Chair (2011 – 2012).

A veteran in this mission, JLD began its diversity and inclusion efforts around a decade and a half ago. What began as a task force has evolved into the topic of Diversity & Inclusion as a main benchmark in our strategic plan. Diversity, equity and inclusion are foundational to everything we do and are woven into the strategies, practices and future of the JLD.
When I think about the next 100 years, I see the League continuing to grow in three areas:
• Representation - Our backgrounds have become broader and our conversations have become richer. We need to continue to lean in on the D&I conversations that reflect the diversity of our membership and the community we serve.

• Accessibility - During the pandemic, we reacted quickly, switching to a virtual framework, making membership and attendance more accessible for all members. We need to continue to meet our members where they are, reacting quickly to remove barriers that impair our members’ engagement.
• Engagement - Our members come from all walks of life, differing in age, race, faith, education level, socio-economic status, etc. Whether a member is in their Provisional year or a Sustainer, we need to ensure they feel seen, heard, engaged and know they bring value to the organization.
I want to thank the JLD for trusting me in this inaugural position, and my Assistant Diversity & Inclusion Vice President Staceye Randle, as well as the Diversity & Inclusion Chair Jennifer Eells and the committee for their dedication and commitment to advancing critical conversations and work in this space this year. And to you, all of our members, my one ask is to keep reaching out to each other and continue to create our community of togetherness and support of one another.
Over 1,500 guests joined the Centennial celebration on Thursday, April 21 for the 11th Annual Milestones Luncheon. Event Co-chairs, Isabell Novakov Higginbotham and Lydia Novakov welcomed the record crowd to “applaud and recognize all who have played such a vital role in the JLD’s remarkable history.”

Guests nibbled on personalized 100th anniversary key lime tarts while drinking featured speaker Martha Stewart’s Red Iced Tea. During the lunch, two prestigious women were honored - Veletta Forsythe Lill was recognized as the 2022 Sustainer of the Year and former First Lady Mrs. Laura Bush was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award. Emceed by NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth News Anchor, Meredith Land, guests heard a moderated conversation with Martha Stewart, who demonstrated the same leadership spirit familiar to members of the Junior League of Dallas.

ACHIEVEMENT
While serving as the First Lady of Texas, and later as First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Bush highlighted groups who needed the help of volunteers across our state and across our country. Mrs. Bush often gives credit to the Junior League for setting a fine example of how volunteerism and women’s leadership can solve the most complex and difficult issues, improving lives every day.

AWARD
“In every way, Laura Bush has energized volunteers in thousands of communities. Using her training at a very young age as a Junior League member, she has offered hope and consolation to millions of individuals around the world,” said the Honorable Jeanne L.

In celebration of the Centennial anniversary, the JLD presented Mrs. Laura Bush with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her excellence in volunteerism and community leadership. This distinguished award honors a Sustaining member who has been a catalyst for community change. Mrs. Bush was an Active member of the Junior League of Midland, Texas, for more than 15 years. She was a member of the board in 1983 and served as Recording Secretary of the Executive Board in 1984.
FormerHigginbothamFirstLady of the United States, Mrs. Laura Bush

When Mrs. Bush moved to Dallas in 1989, she maintained her Sustainer status and supported the Junior League of Dallas.

The 2022 Sustainer of the Year is Veletta Forsythe Lill, who credits the JLD for giving the leadership skills that have served her throughout her life – from nonprofit board service and budgets to the critical issues facing our city. She served as a volunteer and Project Chair for The Family Place, where she learned about the victims and dynamics of domestic violence, and the complexities of an organization that serves multi-layered needs. Ms. Lill also served on the Community Assistance Fund, which she says was “the equivalent of a lightning round on nonprofits, where she was amazed by the League’s ability to respond to needs in such a thoughtful and timely way.” Ms. Lill believes her volunteer commitments in the League provided valuable education, preparing her to serve the City of Dallas and dozens of nonprofits over the years. She is best known for serving as a Dallas City Council member for eight years representing District 14. Her passion for history and the arts drove her to focus on these topics while working on the City Council. Ms. Lill’s passion for arts and preservation have allowed her to help shape the growth of the Dallas Arts District, including the AT&T Performing Arts Center, Klyde Warren Park, Nasher Sculpture Center, Moody Performances Hall, Crow Museum of Asian Art, Dallas Black Dance Theatre and many more.

On Saturday, April 23, Centennial Gala guests were transported to the 1920s as they entered the Hilton Anatole ballroom greeted by models in 1920s attire.

Junior League of Dallas President Christa Sanford welcomed the guests followed by a champagne toast from Centennial Co-chairs Andrea Cheek and Margo Goodwin who also led the attendees to sing Happy Birthday in celebration of the League’s Centennial birthday. In commemoration of the Hall of State exhibit at the 2021 State Fair of Texas, Fletcher’s Corn Dogs and funnel cakes were handed out as guests left for the evening.
Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts students performed a swing dance to kick off the evening while the band Stratosphere played lively music throughout the night.
“When the League took on this project we knew there were two important roles we could play,” said JLD President Christa Sanford. “By supporting fundraising efforts to rehabilitate Ms. Craft’s home and education programming through its coloring book, the League has served as a catalyst to bring Craft’s vision to fruition — making her home a destination for all.” Looking forward, the League will support the Friends of Juanita Craft Civil Rights House as they continue the application process to become a destination on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.
2021 / 2022 | 21
The League and community partners raised more than $1.4 million for the project’s focus areas, rehabilitation and educational programming. The rehabilitation is expected to be complete in fall 2022, with a ribbon cutting ceremony to be held in fall 2022.

In February of 2022, on what would have been Craft’s 120th birthday, her successors on the City Council honored her with a proclamation designating Feb. 9 Juanita Craft Day and recognizing the League for the rehabilitation of Craft’s home. Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said that the proclamation is about more than commemorating a single day, “it’s about recognizing that generations of people have and will continue to benefit everyday from Craft’s lifetime of work.”
The JLD partnered with the Friends of Juanita Craft Civil Rights House, the City of Dallas’ Office of Arts and Culture, State Fair of Texas and other community partners in the collective efforts to rehabilitate her home and celebrate her life and legacy. “Our Centennial Project team leveraged every

tool in our JLD toolbox to collaborate with key stakeholders, bringing together a first of its kind event,” said JLD Centennial Project Chair Sarah Jackson.

In September 2020, the Junior League of Dallas announced the rehabilitation of the Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House as its Centennial Project. As a prominent Dallas civil rights leader and the second Black woman elected to the Dallas City Council, Craft led a three-decade long fight for desegregation and equal pay, voting rights, education and health care. Crucial to her cause was Craft’s home on Warren Avenue in the Fair Park neighborhood of Dallas. During the height of her activism, it served as a central hub for community organizing and stood witness to many pivotal civil rights moments in Dallas history.

JUANITA CRAFT CIVIL RIGHTS HOUSE
The JLD is also excited to present the community with a coloring book illustrated by South Dallas artist Desireé Vaniecia. The coloring book will educate and spread the word of Ms. Craft’s work, sharing with children how they can play a role in making their communities better.

From May 12 – 14, 2022 over 450 guests came to Dallas as Junior League of Dallas hosted the 100th Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) Conference. It’s been 20 years since the JLD hosted this conference, and everyone was excited to welcome Leagues from around the world back to Dallas during this momentous year for both our organizations. For the closing ceremony festivities, Junior League of Dallas members gave a Big D send-off in true Texas-style with boots and smiles to all attendees. JLD President Christa Sanford led the way at the Hilton Anatole with Junior League of Dallas volunteers and the drumline from South Oak Cliff.
