welcome FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the Centennial Milestones Luncheon!

We are thankful for the women of the Junior League of Dallas for a century of service and leadership in our community.

Today, we are honored to be joined by our members, community partners, donors and featured speaker Martha Stewart to begin a celebratory week dedicated to commemorating the Junior League of Dallas’ first 100 years of service. The work of the JLD is only possible through the incredible commitment of our members. At more than 4,400 women strong, we are deeply committed to our mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. This year, we will give over $1 million of funding throughout Dallas and complete our Centennial project, the rehabilitation of the Juanita Craft Civil Rights House, in partnership with the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture and the Friends of Juanita Craft House. Our Sustainer honorees also perfectly exemplify the Junior League’s mission through their impactful work. Mrs. Laura Bush, our 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, has given back to our state and our country by serving as the First Lady of Texas, then later the First Lady of the United States. Our 2022 Sustainer of the Year, Veletta Forsythe Lill, has dedicated more than 20 years of service to the League and has been a beacon in the Dallas community with her service on the Dallas City Council and with dozens of nonprofits. We are excited to celebrate both of these amazing women and their many accomplishments. As we celebrate this Centennial year, it is important that we reflect not only on what our members accomplished this year, but also how the League will continue this legacy. Over the lifetime of our organization, we have raised more than $40 million and provided nine million volunteer hours to the Dallas community. The League is known for rising to meet the needs of Dallas, and we are still rising to face a new century as an organization. Thank you for your unwavering support for the Junior League of Dallas and for celebrating this milestone with us!

As we gather to commemorate 100 years of the Junior League of Dallas, we invite you to take a moment to consider our history. From the 40 women in 1922 determined to build a better Dallas to the more than 4,400 members today, the Junior League has stood tall and strong, proud to take the lead in making Dallas a better place for all families and children. The Junior League continues to fulfill its mission of developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. For a century, the women of the Junior League have been steadfast in their commitment to volunteerism and the funding of agencies. Our members go into the community to provide hands-on assistance to those who need it most. Our combined volunteer hours and dollars are a testimony to our efforts and set us apart in the community. As we celebrate this afternoon, we do so with respect for our past, and look forward to our future. Today we applaud and recognize all who have played such a vital role in the JLD's remarkable history – you, our generous donors, members past and present and the 2022 Milestones Luncheon Committee. Thank you for your tremendous contributions to our organization. We are honored to recognize a distinguished Junior League member, former First Lady Laura Bush, with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her compassionate volunteerism and exemplary leadership. Thank you, Mrs. Bush, for your extraordinary service to our city, state, country and world. We also recognize Veletta Forsythe Lill, our 2022 Sustainer of the Year, for her contributions and volunteer efforts through the League. Thank you, Veletta, for preserving Dallas’ history, championing the arts and public service. We welcome, our featured speaker, Martha Stewart, who demonstrates this same spirit familiar to members of the Junior League of Dallas. A true trailblazer, she proves repeatedly that commitment, dedication and hard work are the keys to success. We thank our Presenting Sponsor, the Kohl Foundation, our Speaker Sponsor, the Sewell family, and our VIP Reception Sponsor, Origin Bank, for your essential role in making the Milestones Luncheon meaningful. Your loyal support helps the JLD award almost $1 million annually in grants to make a difference in our community. We are truly grateful to serve together as your 2022 Milestones Luncheon Co-chairs. The Junior League of Dallas has been a part of our lives for decades. We embrace its mission and resulting impact, which transforms and betters lives throughout our Dallas community and beyond.

Laura W. Bush LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENT

One of the most beloved and admired American First Ladies, for decades Laura Bush has championed key issues in the fields of education, health care and human rights. She has traveled to more than seventy-six countries – including two historic solo trips to Afghanistan – and has launched groundbreaking education and health care programs in the U.S. and abroad. The author of the bestselling memoir, Spoken From The Heart, and co-author of children’s book, Our Great Big Backyard, Mrs. Bush also founded both the Texas Book Festival and the National Book Festival in Washington D.C. Today, as the Chair of the Woman’s Initiative at the George W. Bush Institute, Mrs. Bush continues her work on global health care innovations, empowering women in emerging democracies, education reform and supporting the men and women who have served in America’s military. Born in Midland, Texas to Jenna and Harold Welch, Laura Bush holds a degree in education from Southern Methodist University and a master’s degree in library science from the University of Texas. She taught in public schools in Dallas, Houston and Austin, and worked as a public school librarian. In 1977, she married George W. Bush. President and Mrs. Bush are the parents of twin daughters: Barbara, married to Craig Coyne; and Jenna, married to Henry Hager; and proud grandparents of Mila, Poppy, Hal Hager and "Cora" Georgia Coyne. 7

Martha Stewart Veletta ForsytheLill SUSTAINER OF THE YEAR

Veletta Forsythe Lill has been a dedicated JLD member for more than 20 years, serving in multiple roles including as a volunteer and Project Chair for The Family Place, where she learned about the victims and dynamics of domestic violence, as well as the complexities of an organization that serves multi-layered needs. As an elected leader, Veletta represented District 14 on the Dallas City Council for eight years, from 1997 to 2005, and chaired the Arts, Education and Libraries Committee. Her passion for history and the arts drove her to focus on those topics during her Council tenure. A longtime arts and preservation advocate, Veletta served as Founding Director of the Dallas Arts District Foundation and was instrumental in shaping the growth of the Dallas Arts District, which includes the AT&T Performing Arts Center, Klyde Warren Park, Nasher Sculpture Center, Moody Performance Hall, Crow Museum of Asian Art, Dallas Black Dance Theatre and many more. Many of Dallas’ historic structures – including the Statler and Old Municipal Building – remain standing due to her efforts and activism. Through the years, she has served on the boards of The Family Place, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Parks Foundation, Greater Dallas Planning Council, Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau, Parkland Foundation and many more. Today, Veletta devotes her time to the efforts to reimagine Fair Park. She serves on the board of Fair Park First and as Chair of the Dallas Historical Society, which is celebrating its centennial anniversary in 2022. Veletta also remains a staunch advocate for the restoration of the Hall of State – and now its repairs. 8

Martha was inspired to create the center by her mother, Martha Kostyra, who remained active and engaged in life to the age of 93. GRANTS FOR INNOVATIVE TEACHING Presenting Sponsor: Texas Instruments On September 1, 2021, the Junior League of Dallas, along with Presenting Sponsor Texas Instruments, awarded 41 Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) educators with funding up to $2,500 each through the annual Grants for Innovative Teaching (GFIT) program. Now in its 30th year, the Signature Project has awarded more than $2 million to Dallas ISD educators since its inception in 1992. This year, the League distributed more than $88,000 to fund deserving educators’ winning projects that address reading and literacy enrichment; diversity; special education; science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); or arts and culture enrichment across one or more grade levels.

WOMEN LEAD Presenting Sponsor: Ryan Foundation This scholarship program helps female high school students pursue their dreams of higher education and creates opportunities for future women leaders. Ten finalists from three Dallas ISD high schools - Emmett J. Conrad, Thomas Jefferson and South Oak Cliff Dallas ISD - compete in a speech contest held each spring. On March 30, 2022, the Junior League of Dallas awarded $40,000 to the ten finalists. Since the inception of this Signature Project in 2013, the League has awarded 62 scholarships totaling $305,000.

Each teacher is recognized for their passion and excellence in providing special projects and experiences for their students that would be impossible within current school budgets. Co-sponsors include The Hillcrest Foundation, Bank of America N.A., Co-Trustee and Agnes Cluthe Oliver Foundation.

T. BOONE PICKENS LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE KIDS IN THE KITCHEN Presenting Sponsor: UnitedHealthcare This Signature Project empowers youth in grades K – 5 to make healthy lifestyle choices and helps fight childhood obesity and its associated health issues through an eight-week after-school program. The League provides each agency with a curriculum, materials, fitness equipment and funding for food. The Kids in the Kitchen program is supported by the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) Inc. and its member Leagues. 26

Established in 2008 with a generous gift from the T. Boone Pickens Foundation, the T. Boone Pickens Leadership Institute is designed to provide leadership training to a selected annual class of our members. Today, more than 360 members have participated in the 9-month development and Predictive Index training and have taken what they have learned to advance their careers, lead for- and nonprofit boards and serve in elected and civic held positions. Alumnae have gone on to lead city-wide initiatives, task forces and organizations, working to make positive changes in North Texas.

ADDITIONAL LEAGUE-SUPPORTED PROGRAMS

P R O V I SI ON A L P R O J E C T S C O M M U N ITY OUTR EA CH This program addresses critical needs with Community Impact Projects and grants that support our focus areas, including monetary grants for emergency/short-term needs of Dallas nonprofit agencies through the Community Assistance Fund. This year the Junior League of Dallas’ Community Outreach team partnered with the Dallas City Council to collect feminine hygiene products for their Ending Period Poverty Initiative. The League also granted emergency grant funding to the Bridge Breast Network, Nexus Recovery Center and half a dozen other nonprofits to help keep their programs running to serve the Dallas community.

Each year, the League trains first-year members, “Provisionals,” to be effective volunteers and leaders in the community. Provisionals complete a comprehensive training course, giving them a first-hand look at the needs of the Dallas community. Each woman completes a 20-hour community service project at Dallasarea nonprofits including: Legacy Counseling Center, Mission Oak Cliff, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Rainbow Days, Ronald McDonald House, St. Philip’s School and Community Center and The Senior Source.

T RA N SFE R P R O J E C T S

MUSICAL O UTR E A CH Musical Outreach, formerly Musical Therapy, is the longest running volunteer opportunity at the JLD. JLD volunteers provide companionship, stimulation and entertainment for adults, teens and children in the Dallas area by presenting a musical program and interacting with residents in various assisted living and memory care centers.

28

The League offers “Done in a Day” projects for members who have recently transferred into the Junior League of Dallas from other Leagues. This year, the League partnered with Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas and Volunteers of America Texas Castleglen Apartments, a senior housing complex that provides affordable low-income housing under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). For the first project, transfers assisted at a family-friendly event at GSNETX’s STEM Center of Excellence that brought together outdoor and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities with a Valentine’s Day theme. For the second project - with Volunteers of America - transfers spent the day beautifying the apartment complex by painting the fencing around the property, cleaning gardens, fixing and delivering lunch and engaging with the residents. Both projects included eight hours of service, engaging activities with the nonprofits’ participants and a $500 grant from the JLD for the nonprofit to use for the day’s events.

C e l e b rat i n g C e n t e n n i a l On May 4, 1922, the Junior League of Dallas began with 40 women determined to make a difference in our city. Women had received the right to vote two years prior, but opportunities outside the home were still few. The Junior League provided a place for these women to grow their talents and give back to their city. Today, the League is more than 4,400 women strong. It is a special place for women to flourish and impact Dallas’ most critical issues. This year, we honor JLD’s first 100 years a nd imagine the next 100.

WELCOMING ALL JUNIOR LEAGUES TO DALLAS From May 12 – 14, 2022, we will host the 100th Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) Conference. It’s been 20 years since we’ve hosted this conference and we’re excited to welcome Leagues from around the world back to Dallas!

INVESTING IN THE NEXT 100 YEARS The Centennial Endowment Foundation was established in 2018 to bolster the League’s training and support fund and help us develop the next generation of Dallas’ women leaders. Former JLD President Lyda Hill generously pledged a lead gift of $5 million with an additional $5 million challenge grant. We continue to invite donors to match her gift.

his fall, the League hosted an interactive exhibit of our history and T impact on Dallas at the Hall of State at Fair Park during the State Fair of Texas. This exhibit was presented through a generous donation from the Sewell family.

Ms. Craft devoted her life to equal rights. From 1950 until her death in 1985, her home near the Fair Park neighborhood served as command central for many pivotal civil rights moments in Dallas, across the state and beyond. We have joined key organizations and community leaders in donating critical funds and support to restore her home, so it can be a place for all to learn about its place in Dallas’ history and civil rights.

For the win

Above and beyond

In an incredibly tight market, Lucy arranged for me to see a house just as it became available and did everything possible to make my offer the winner. She navigated the entire process and represented me extremely well.” —Alex H.

I couldn’t have survived this process without Penny. Her patience and diligence are unmatched, going above and beyond the call of duty. I would work with her again in a heartbeat, and would recommend her to anyone.” —Natalie B.

And we’ve only just begun! Our camps and after school programs are targeted to arts deserts - those areas that are underfunded and underserved. There, we engage children and youth through the arts, providing them with the tools they need to navigate real life challenges confidently and competently. Through our programming, youth are transformed.
