Welcome from the President It is with great pleasure and excitement that I welcome you to the Junior League of Dallas’ Centennial Gala! For 100 years, the JLD has striven to be the premier organization to connect and develop women to be change agents in the Dallas community. In 1922, 40 women came together to give their time, talent and energy to positively impact the lives of Dallas’ growing population. Initially supporting hospital patients and individuals with disabilities, the group leveraged the power of women as trained volunteers, which gave rise to the Junior League of Dallas. Just a few years after the League began its work in Dallas, members shifted their focus and immediately responded to combat the economic crisis and work with the unemployed during the Great Depression. And in the 1940s, members of the JLD answered the call by serving in war-related projects in addition to their regular service. Despite the challenging historic events occurring through the 1930s and 1940s, the JLD continued to grow reaching 510 members entering into the 1950s. Today, the JLD has grown to more than 4,400 members and continues to transform Dallas by training members for effective participation in the community and through its dedication to the belief that volunteer service is an essential part of responsible citizenship. As we emerge from recent challenging historic events, the Junior League of Dallas remains a catalyst for positive change, giving women from diverse backgrounds and perspectives unique opportunities to grow, learn and serve. And after our members complete their years of Active service, the League’s training propels them to continue their impact in the community by serving in nonprofit and board leadership roles, leading within corporate organizations, holding political offices and creating nonprofits themselves. From its inception until now, the JLD has given more than $40 million to local nonprofit agencies and has provided more than nine million volunteer hours to promote quality health services, awareness and prevention; strengthen the security and stability of individuals and families; and promote excellence in education and inspiring creativity. To our donors, members and friends, we are truly grateful to you for believing in the transformative power of our mission and supporting this legacy of leadership that has been devoted to Dallas for a century. Thank you for celebrating this milestone evening with us! Yours in service, Christa Sanford President 2021 – 2022

We are thankful for the women of the Junior League of Dallas for a century of service and leadership in our community.

Welcome from Centennial Co-chairs Andrea Cheek and Margo Goodwin We are honored and privileged to welcome you to the Junior League of Dallas Centennial Gala! Tonight, we applaud and recognize all of you who have played such an important role in the Junior League of Dallas’ storied 100-year history. We especially want to thank our generous donors who have made this year’s Centennial celebration possible by donating to our community service fund, the Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House, our Hall of State exhibit and the Centennial Endowment Foundation. Please take note of our many special thanks donors too, who’ve worked hard in making tonight and all our events this year so beautiful. In 2018, the Centennial Endowment Foundation was established to strengthen the League’s volunteer training and support services with a generous $5 million lead gift and $5 million matching gift from former JLD President Lyda Hill. In 2019 we selected our Centennial project, joining key organizations and community leaders to rehabilitate the home of Civil Rights Leader Juanita J. Craft. We’re especially proud that this will soon be a place for all to learn about her place in Dallas’ history and civil rights. This year, with help from our newly archived history, we shared our remarkable story with more than 100,000 Texas State Fair visitors over 24 days at our Hall of State exhibit. In May, we’ll welcome 500 League members from across the U.S. and Canada at the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) Conference. Perhaps the thing we will most remember from this Centennial journey is how League members – across every generation – came together to honor our history and create an important foundation for our future. These connections are a true testament to our League’s “Legacy of Leadership and Devotion to Dallas.” It has been our great privilege to help honor the League’s first 100 years and we eagerly look forward to our next 100. Sincerely, Andrea Cheek & Margo Goodwin Junior League of Dallas Centennial Co-chairs

Juanita Craft Day Juanita J. Craft knew what she wanted her legacy to be. “I want them to remember one thing – I raised hell with them.” As a prominent Dallas civil rights leader and the second Black woman elected to the Dallas City Council, Craft led a three-decade long fight for desegregation and equal pay, voting rights, education and health care. Crucial to her hell-raising was Craft’s home on Warren Avenue in the Fair Park neighborhood of Dallas. During the height of her activism, it served as a central hub for community organizing and stood witness to many pivotal civil rights moments in Dallas history. Notable visitors included Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, our country’s first Black Supreme Court Justice, Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Jimmy Carter and numerous U.S. congresspersons and Texas state legislators. The home was willed by Craft for civic use after her death and is now owned by the city. It is designated as a Dallas City Landmark Commission site, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a Texas Historic Landmark property. Craft made it known before her death that she wanted the home to be a place where people of all backgrounds could visit and learn how to become a change maker. Since 1994, the home has operated as a house museum. But in 2018, it was damaged when a water pipe burst in the attic. Rehabilitating the home is the Junior League of Dallas’ Centennial Project, a partnership with the Dallas Office of Arts & Culture, Fair Park and the Friends of the Juanita Craft Civil Rights House. “Juanita Craft’s home was a nexus for the greatest minds of her time. Once her home re-opens later this year, our hope is that it is constantly alive with the greatest minds of today, curious to learn about the past and helping to grow the city’s future,” JLD President Christa Sanford said. Once restored, the home will once again be a museum with educational programs that tell the story of Craft’s life and advocacy. “It is our hope that each person that crosses the threshold of Ms. Craft’s home is transformed into a better version of themselves, committed to actively participating in civic life,” Candace Thompson, Chair of the Friends of the Juanita Craft Civil Rights House, said in remarks to the City Council. Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said that the proclamation is about more than commemorating a single day. “It’s about recognizing that generations of people have and will continue to benefit everyday from Craft’s lifetime of work.”

34

Juanita Craft Day The proclamation celebration was attended by Dallas City Council members, including JLD Sustaining members Gay Donnell Willis and Paula Blackmon. In February 2022, on what would have been Craft’s 120th birthday, her successors on the City Council honored her with a proclamation designating Feb. 9 Juanita Craft Day. The proclamation accompanied an agenda item authorizing the city’s Office of Arts and Culture to accept a $176,000 donation from the League for the restoration of Craft’s home. The donation brings total fundraising contributions among the various community partners to $1.4 million. Adam Bazaldua, Chair of the City of Dallas’ Quality of Life, Arts & Culture Committee and Council Member representing where the home is located said, “Being able to share the life and legacy of Ms. Craft with generations to come is invaluable. Some don’t realize that we have such a hero right here at home. It is our job to change that.” Bazaldua also talked about the civil rights changes seen over a generation. In 1955, working as a grassroots organizer with the NAACP, Craft led picketing against segregation at the State Fair of Texas. Her work led to the full desegregation of the fair in the 1960s. In 2018, the State Fair of Texas established the Juanita Craft Humanitarian Awards and recently renamed one of its annual scholarships in her honor. At this year’s fair, Craft’s legacy was on display at the JLD’s Centennial exhibit in the Hall of State. “Juanita Craft dedicated decades of her life to making this city better,” Mayor Johnson said. “The fight for fairness, the fight for opportunity and for equality under the law didn’t begin or end in Juanita Craft’s lifetime. It’s up to us to continue that cause to which she dedicated her entire life.”

Violence Intervention Supporting efforts to reduce the incidence of domestic violence, child abuse and juvenile delinquency. 174 volunteers and $149,480 funding Community Partners of Dallas

Community Partners of Dallas (CPD) provides what abused children urgently need today to thrive tomorrow. JLD volunteers provide resources and support to Dallas caseworkers by serving as Caseworker Advocates, Rainbow Room assistants, Heart Program volunteers and Holiday Helpers.

Dallas CASA

Dallas CASA recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers who are appointed by the courts to represent the best interests of abused, neglected and abandoned children in protective care. JLD provides trained, courtappointed volunteers who investigate and monitor the case and subsequent protection of abused and neglected children and serve as advocates in court to help them get into safe, loving homes.

Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center

Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center (DCAC) improves the lives of abused children in Dallas County and provides national leadership on child abuse issues. JLD volunteers help with the preparation and execution of the Crimes Against Children Conference – the premiere conference for law enforcement, CPS and social workers who work directly with child victims of crime. Volunteers also assist in the playroom at DCAC headquarters.

Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support

Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support provides safety, shelter and support for women who have experienced domestic violence and raises awareness regarding its cause, prevalence and impact. JLD volunteers serve as holiday program assistants, hotline and resource volunteers, Kids PALS, thrift store associates and Conference on Crimes Against Women volunteers.

Our Friends Place

Our Friends Place (OFP) provides a positive and encouraging environment for young women ages 18 to 24 to emerge from adversity through positive role models, counseling and life skills classes at a supervised apartment setting. JLD volunteers serve as life skills coaches and office friends.

The Family Place

The Family Place empowers victims of family violence by providing safe housing, counseling and skills that create independence while building community engagement and advocating for social change to stop family violence. JLD volunteers serve in the shelter, providing assistance for victims of family violence. Volunteers also help in the Child Development Center, retail shop and at summer camp.

League-Supported Programs Community Outreach This program addresses critical needs with Community Impact Projects and grants that support our focus areas, including monetary grants for emergency/short-term needs of Dallas nonprofit agencies through the Community Assistance Fund. This year the Junior League of Dallas’ Community Outreach team partnered with the Dallas City Council to collect feminine hygiene products for their Ending Period Poverty Initiative. The League also granted emergency grant funding to the Bridge Breast Network, Nexus Recovery Center and half a dozen other nonprofits to help keep their programs running to serve the Dallas community.

Musical Outreach Musical Outreach, formerly Musical Therapy, is the longest running volunteer opportunity at the JLD! JLD volunteers provide companionship, stimulation and entertainment for adults, teens and children in the Dallas area by presenting a musical program and interacting with residents in various assisted living and memory care centers.

Additional

League-Supported Programs Provisional Projects Each year, the League trains first-year members, “Provisionals,” to be effective volunteers and leaders in the community. Provisionals complete a comprehensive training course, giving them a first-hand look at the needs of the Dallas community. Each woman completes a 20-hour community service project at Dallas-area nonprofits including: Legacy Counseling Center, Mission Oak Cliff, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Rainbow Days, Ronald McDonald House, St. Philip’s School and Community Center and The Senior Source.

Transfer Projects The League offers “Done in a Day” projects for members who have recently transferred into the Junior League of Dallas from other Leagues. This year, the League partnered with Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas and Volunteers of America Texas Castleglen Apartments, a senior housing complex that provides affordable low-income housing under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). For the first project, transfers assisted at a family-friendly event at GSNETX’s STEM Center of Excellence that brought together outdoor and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities with a Valentine’s Day theme. For the second project - with Volunteers of America - Transfers spent the day beautifying the apartment complex by painting the fencing around the property, cleaning gardens, fixing and delivering lunch and engaging with the residents. Both projects included eight hours of service, engaging activities with the nonprofits’ participants and a $500 grant from the JLD for the nonprofit to use for the day’s events. 73

Signature Projects Grants for Innovative Teaching

Presenting Sponsor: Texas Instruments On September 1, 2021, the Junior League of Dallas, along with Presenting Sponsor Texas Instruments, awarded 42 Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) educators with funding up to $2,500 each through the annual Grants for Innovative Teaching (GFIT) program. Now in its 30th year, the Signature Project has awarded more than $2 million to Dallas ISD educators since its inception in 1992. This year, the League distributed more than $88,000 to fund deserving educators’ winning projects that address reading and literacy enrichment; diversity; special education; science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); or arts and culture enrichment across one or more grade levels. Each teacher is recognized for their passion and excellence in providing special projects and experiences for their students that would be impossible within current school budgets. Co-sponsors include The Hillcrest Foundation, Bank of America N.A., Co-Trustee and Agnes Cluthe Oliver Foundation.

Kids in the Kitchen

Presenting Sponsor: UnitedHealthcare The Kids in the Kitchen (KITK) signature project empowers youth in grades K – 5 to make healthy lifestyle choices and helps fight childhood obesity and its associated health issues through an eight-week after-school program. Through the KITK interactive program, children are taught how to prepare easy, nutritious meals, work safely in the kitchen and incorporate exercise into their daily lives. All recipes are kid tested and truly kid friendly, calling for simple ingredients that do not require an oven or stove. KITK currently serves 43 sites across 10 agencies throughout Dallas County, impacting the lives of more than 750 kids. The League provides each agency with a curriculum, materials, fitness equipment and funding for food. Kids in the Kitchen is supported by the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) Inc. and its member Leagues.

74

Signature Projects Women LEAD

Presenting Sponsor: Ryan Foundation Founded in 2013 by the Junior League of Dallas, in collaboration with Mary Kay Inc., the Women LEAD (Learn + Excel + Achieve + Dream) Scholarship Program was created to help female high school students pursue their dreams of higher education and to create opportunities for future women leaders. Now supported by Ryan Foundation, the program has grown from one Dallas Independent School District high school to three – Emmett J. Conrad, Thomas Jefferson and South Oak Cliff high schools. Each spring, 10 finalists from the three Dallas ISD schools compete for a total of $40,000 in college scholarships. Since the inception of this Signature Project, the League has awarded 62 scholarships totaling $305,000 to female seniors at Emmett J. Conrad, South Oak Cliff and Thomas Jefferson High Schools.

T. Boone Pickens Leadership Institute Established in 2008 with a generous gift from the T. Boone Pickens Foundation, the T. Boone Pickens Leadership Institute is designed to provide leadership training to a selected annual class of our members. Today, more than 360 members have participated in the nine-month development and leadership training and have taken what they have learned to advance their careers, lead for- and nonprofit boards and serve in elected and civic held positions. Alumnae have gone on to lead city-wide initiatives, task forces and organizations, working to make positive changes in North Texas.
