Welcome

from the president

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the first ever virtual Milestones Luncheon. On behalf of our nearly 5,000 members, thank you for helping us celebrate our Sustainer of the Year Diane Scovell. We know you’ll enjoy today’s conversation with our special guest, World Champion gymnast Simone Biles. Despite the unprecedented time, the League continues to be tirelessly committed to our mission: to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Every year, we contribute thousands of uncompensated volunteer hours and approximately $1 million to the greater Dallas community through our 38 partner agencies and the League’s Signature Projects. I could not be more proud to serve as President of this wonderful organization during such an extraordinary year. While nothing could have prepared us for a pandemic, our training prepared us to adapt and think creatively about how we could continue to support our community and each other. Our members have found inventive ways to serve and train even when we can’t be together in person. We continue to thrive because of the dedication and commitment of our devoted membership and community partners – thank you again for your support of the Junior League of Dallas. Best,

Elizabeth Dacus

Welcome

from the luncheon chair

Thank you very much for joining us at the 10th Anniversary Milestones Luncheon! We are thrilled to have you celebrate a truly memorable year with us. We are excited to honor 2021 Sustainer of the Year Diane Scovell and hear the amazing story of World Champion gymnast Simone Biles. When we started planning the Milestones Luncheon more than two years ago, I would have never imagined we would experience so many historical events. The year has been full of many pivots and like others, it has honed my definition of resilience. A wonderful part of planning the Luncheon has been meeting a dear friend in Candace Winslow, my luncheon Co-Chair, and working with so many other talented and dedicated League members. Thank you to our tremendous donors who give generously and genuinely support the needs of our community through the League’s Community Program and Signature Projects. Through your support, the League’s nearly 5,000 members continue to make a lasting impact on our city. Last, but not least, I want to thank my friends and family who have supported my years of service in the League. It was been a truly wonderful experience. I sincerely appreciate the support of everyone attending the Milestones Luncheon because your gift allows the Junior League of Dallas to fulfill its mission and continue the great work that began almost 100 years ago. It has been a truly wonderful experience.

Welcome

from the luncheon chair -sustainer

In the 27 years I have been a member of the Junior League of Dallas, perhaps no placement will stand out more in my memory than serving as this year’s Milestones Co-Chair along with the remarkable Erin Pope. When Erin and I first met and shared “can’t wait to work with you” pleasantries, little did either of us know what the year would have in store. And what a year (or actually 21 months) of planning it was! True to the mission of our beloved League, Erin, the Milestones Committee and the entire 2020 - 2021 Development team remained committed to the task at hand and were effective in their actions, which required unparalleled resiliency. They kept their collective eyes on the goal of making our community strong through results-oriented fundraising. It has been such a joy to work alongside a group of women who possess such grace, determination and character.

There is no doubt that it is the union of all of you supporting this luncheon today – whether League member, donor or friend – that represents the spirit of improving the quality of life in Dallas. Little did I know back in 1994 how the Junior League of Dallas would not only shape my volunteer skills, but more importantly, graciously give me lifelong friends. On this special day I am even more resolute in knowing that together we can genuinely make a difference in the lives of others. Thank you for your support through your presence – albeit virtual - and your gifts that truly make an impact!

Conversation with

Simone Biles World Champion Gymnast

Simone Biles is the most decorated gymnast — male or female — in World Championships history, and is widely regarded as the greatest gymnast of all time. Biles is the first female African-American All-Around World Champion. Biles’s influence transcends sports, as she was included in TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list 2017, and was the youngest person ever named to TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year finalist list in 2016. Biles has competed on Dancing with the Stars and appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show, Lip Sync Battle and more. In and out of foster care with her siblings as a child, Biles was adopted by her grandparents at a young age. A major influence in her life, her parents introduced her to the sport of gymnastics at the age of six and in 2014 founded the World Champions Centre (WCC) in Spring, TX where Biles trains. Biles’s autobiography Courage to Soar was a New York Times Best Seller and was developed into an awardwinning Lifetime film. Biles utilizes her platform to support initiatives that provide assistance and education for children and young adults involved with foster care and adoption.

The team distributes monetary grants to address emergency or short-term needs of an area nonprofit agency and initiates short-term projects to assist with specific community needs.

Provisional Projects Each year we train a group of first-year members, “Provisionals,” to be effective volunteers and leaders in the community. Provisional members complete a comprehensive training course that allows them to experience needs, first-hand, within the Dallas community. This year each Provisional will participate in one of twelve 20-hour community service projects. The projects span our six Issue Areas: Arts and Culture, Poverty Intervention, Family Preservation, Violence Intervention, Health, and Education.
