It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 Milestones Luncheon! On behalf of our nearly 5,000 members, thank you for helping us celebrate our Sustainer of the Year, Bess Enloe. We know you’ll enjoy today’s conversation with our special guest, actress and Golden Globe® Award winner, Keri Russell. For 98 years, the League has been tirelessly committed to our mission: to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. This year, we will contribute 130,000 uncompensated volunteer hours and approximately $1 million to the greater Dallas community. Our members devote their time directly to our 39 partner agencies and the League’s Signature Projects with the goals of: • Promoting quality health services, awareness and prevention • Strengthening the security and stability of individuals and families • Promoting excellence in education and inspiring creativity During my time in the League, I have witnessed first-hand the dedication to leadership development, civic education and hands-on service that each of our members share. These women take what they learn in the League to lead in their professions, their communities and their families – creating a powerful ripple effect. We are especially grateful for the dedication of our generous supporters like you, who help us continue to flourish and make a difference in the lives of so many in Dallas.

It is only because of your support that we are able to raise critical funds for the agencies we serve and the volunteer training of our members to help them lead in our community. I am truly grateful beyond words. It has been an honor as a Sustainer to help bring this event to life, working with the outstanding Active and Sustainer volunteers who have made this day successful. For almost 100 years, JLD has been unique in combining volunteers and funding to help a multitude of agencies improve the lives of those they serve. The impact our members have had, both as Actives and Sustainers, is immeasurable and the League has truly changed the footprint of our great city. On a personal note, I am forever indebted to the League for not only teaching me invaluable skills, but also for giving me lifelong friendships. Again, thank you for your part in making today successful — for your time, your energy, your talents and your financial resources. As they say, “It takes a village� and the JLD members are a very special village that continues to focus on making Dallas a city of enormous potential.

Bess Enloe’s passion, energetic leadership and support of the arts throughout the years is reflected in the number of groups in which she serves. Long before the AT&T Performing Arts Center became a reality, Enloe saw the need for the facility. She actively pursued it and now serves on the Center’s Governance Committee and Executive Committee, as well as Co-Chair of the Capital Campaign. Enloe is a Life Trustee of the Dallas Theatre Center, where she served as President and then Chairman of the Board from 1989 - 1996. From 2010 - 2014, she served as Chairman of the SMU Meadows School of the Arts Executive Board and currently serves as a member of that board. Enloe has received several awards in recognition of her work including the TACA Silver Cup Award in 1993, the TITAS Award for Excellence in 2007 and the Dallas Historical Society’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2009. In 2014, she was the Honoree for the Meadows at the Meyerson event benefiting SMU’s Meadows School for the Arts. In 2015, she received a Distinguished Alumna Award from Southern Methodist University. Enloe joined the JLD in 1972. Through the years, she held a variety of positions including Ball Chair from 1978 - 1979 and Board of Directors from 1978 - 1980. Enloe has been a dedicated Sustainer to JLD.

One of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents on television, the silver screen and now Broadway, Keri Russell has proven she can master it all. She was most recently seen on the critically acclaimed FX series “The Americans,” which completed its sixseason run this spring. For the show, Russell received a Television Critics Association Award for Individual Achievement in Drama, three Emmy nominations, one Golden Globe® nomination and four Critics’ Choice Award nominations. Upcoming, Russell will be seen on the big screen in “Star Wars: Episode IX,” which reunites her with director J.J. Abrams, and the Scott Cooper directed, Guillermo Del Toro produced supernatural horror thriller, “Antlers.” Russell’s film credits include “We Were Soldiers,” “Mad About Mambo,” “The Upside of Anger,” “Mission Impossible III,” “August Rush,” “The Girl in the Park,” “Bedtime Stories,” “Extraordinary Measures,” “Goats,” “Austenland,” “Dark Skies,” “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” “Free State of Jones” and of course, the romantic film “Waitress” for which she received rave reviews. Russell first garnered attention when she starred in the title role of the hit television series “Felicity” created by J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves. Just four months after the show’s acclaimed premiere on the WB, she was honored with a Golden Globe® Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series. Russell’s other television credits include the miniseries “Into the West,” executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the Hallmark Hall of Fame Presentation “The Magic of Ordinary Days” and “Running Wilde” with Will Arnett. Russell was seen alongside Adam Driver in the first Broadway revival of Landford Wilson’s “Burn This.” The limited engagement play, directed by Tony Award® winner Michael Mayer, opened in March 2019 and ran through July 2019. This appearance marked Russell’s return to New York theatre after making her off-Broadway stage debut in production of Neil LaBute’s “Fat Pig” in 2005. Russell was named one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People in the World, but it is clear her beauty shines within as well. She is very involved in philanthropic works and credits becoming a mother for what has made her so passionate about charitable work. 9

GRANTS FOR INNO VATIVE TEA CHING These grants are dedicated to improving education by funding unique programs designed especially for a particular school or grade level. The program is committed to education in the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) and strives to promote opportunities for teachers and students. This program has provided approximately $1.9 million to Dallas ISD educators since its inception in 1992. During 2019 - 2020, JLD will award 50 grants totaling nearly $92,000.
KIDS IN THE KITCHEN This program empowers youth in grades K - 5 to make healthy lifestyle choices and helps fight childhood obesity and its associated health issues through an eight week after-school program. The League provides each agency with a curriculum, materials, fitness equipment and funding for food. 18

T. B OONE PICKENS LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE Now in its 11th year, this intensive program trains League members on identifying and building strengths, enhancing leadership skills and developing relationships to help prepare them for leadership service in the Dallas community. Alumnae have gone on to lead city-wide initiatives, task forces and organizations, working to make positive changes in North Texas.
WOMEN LEAD LEARN | EXCEL | A CHIEVE | DREAM This scholarship program helps female high school students pursue their dreams of higher education and creates opportunities for future women leaders. Ten finalists from three DISD high schools - Emmett J. Conrad, Thomas Jefferson and South Oak Cliff - compete in a speech contest held each spring. 19

COMMUNITY OUTR EA CH This program addresses critical needs with Community Impact Projects and grants that support our Issue Areas, including monetary grants for emergency/short-term needs of area nonprofit agencies through the Community Assistance Fund.
PR O VISIONAL PR O J E CT S Each year, the League trains first-year members, “Provisionals,” to be effective volunteers and leaders in the community. Provisionals complete a comprehensive training course, giving them a first-hand look at the needs of the Dallas community. Each woman completes a 20hour community service project at Dallas-area nonprofits including: Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, Heart House, Heroes for Children, Jubilee Park, Just Say Yes, Nexus Recovery Center, Rainbow Days, Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, The Senior Source and St. Phillip's School.
