Letter from Our President, Lisa L. Johnson

‘discover your mission’ During the Junior League of Charlotte, Inc.’s (JLC) January General Membership Meeting, members had an opportunity to hear from keynote guest speaker Vicki Clark, noted trainer and consultant responsible for inspiring women and community leaders in the non-profit, government and private industries over her 30 year career. During her presentation, members were reminded of the JLC’s goal to be the leading force in improving the mental, physical and dental health of children and families in the Charlotte community. In a time where there often seems to be more problems than solutions, the JLC remains committed to being a part of the solution.

The JLC will continue to provide invaluable services to our community through formation of new partnerships with organizations such as EmpowHERment, whose mission is to work with women and young girls to be leaders in their communities, and through continued ongoing partnership with organizations, such as Alexander Youth Network, Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, Circle de Luz and the Ada Jenkins Center. Whether our members are teaching families how to prepare healthy meals, providing emotional support to a child dealing with grief or motivating girls to overcome personal challenges, our members continue to answer the call of our community.

In addition to our commitment to the community, the JLC remains committed to developing the potential of women. Through ongoing training and development, our members gain new skills in order to be prepared for their volunteer role in our

community. I often recall the words of the JLC’s Past President Katherine Fuller, “Our community impact is crucial but to develop our potential as women is extraordinary.”

As our League enters the fourth quarter of this League year, our commitment to improving our community and developing our members is stronger than it has ever been. Through the continued support of dedicated and trained volunteers, the JLC continues to be motivated by our mission. W. Clement Stone reminds us “When you DISCOVER your mission, you will feel its demand. It will fill you with enthusiasm and a burning desire to get to work on it.”

As you read this quarter’s edition of The CRIER, it is my hope that you will enjoy the stories of our League. It is also my hope that the stories will inspire you to continue to support the JLC through your continued membership (if you are a member) or urge you to get involved in our community by becoming a member of the JLC or contributing to the work and mission of the JLC through a donation.

‘spring excitement’ As we move into the 90th year of The Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC), The CRIER staff wanted to share some stoires that show how our members have been busy working throughout this League year. We also focus on stories that portray some of the long-standing partnerships and traditions that illustrate the mission the League has valued since its start.

One of our feature articles tells the story of the League’s partnership with the Center for Prevention Services, which was founded more than 45 years ago. It is relationships like these in the Charlotte community that show how the League strives to help build sustainable, long-lasting programs that continue to provide services long into the future.

We also share a flashback article about the JLC puppeting program, one that has continued to evolve with new methods and technologies.

Puppets began as a form of entertainment and education for children in area schools. They were used to tell stories, as well as serve as a form of therapy for students with special needs. Over the next few decades, the JLC continued to use puppets as a relatable way to bring information to children in a fun and colorful way, inlcuding nutrition information during Kids In The Kitchen and Go Kids Go events, as well as through interactive video games available online.

It is programs like these that help reach out to children in ways that are relatable and fun. In the same way, the relationship with the Alexander Youth Network uses similar techniques to bring joy to children in challenging circumstances. Our article focusing on the events supported by the Alexander Youth Network committee shows the wide variety of exciting experiences children at the center have the opportunity to participate in throughout the year. Each committee member is focused to bring smiles to the faces of each child involved.

As we enter into the excitement of spring, we hope that you look for ways to continue the traditions that have sustained the League for nine decades by helping and serving others.

We hope you enjoy and are inspired by the stories brought to you by our staff about the wonderful happenings in our organization.

Arina Kirk 2016-2017 President-Elect Arina Kirk is a woman who is not afraid to think differently, and it is not a stretch to say that she will endeavor to lead differently.

One of her greatest strengths is centered around strategic thinking. This, coupled with a desire to have every member of the Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC) examine why they joined the League, Arina is determined to help each JLC member receive what she needs for her League experience to be meaningful.

Arina grew up the youngest of seven children to Dutch parents. After studying Economics at Vanderbilt University and completing her graduate studies at American University in Education Leadership and Management, she conducted training within the construction industry. Despite her friends extolling the benefits of joining the Junior League, the timing had not been right due to career demands. Upon arriving in Charlotte in 2008, Arina realized that the JLC would provide her a special social outlet as well.

Having been a member of the JLC since 2009, Arina has taken on an increasing amount of responsibility and made dear friends in the process. Shortly after joining the JLC, Arina co-founded eAdopt with her husband, where she is the VP of Operations. The software company, born out of her family’s adoption experience, strives to organize the adoption process and streamline communication with an agency. Despite those responsibilities, this League year she is double-placed as the President of the Junior League of Charlotte Foundation, Inc. and on the WearHouse Consignment subcommittee.

Being Intentional In Your Commitment When asked her thoughts on keeping members engaged despite so many demands on time, Arina believes that each member will receive from the League in measure to the effort she puts into her duties and commitment. “For me, the League has been great, because it is not a place where I’m mommy first, and I am not my business role first, I am just Arina. That’s been a touchstone for me because it gives me something I am not getting in other areas of my life.”

She goes on to say, “We must constantly ask ourselves why we joined the League and use those reasons as motivation to stay involved.” Whether someone joined to meet like-minded people, to expand their social circle, or to serve the community, there is still a level of contribution required in order for a member’s involvement to be meaningful.

In every interaction, large or small, there is opportunity to be had.

Doing a little extra work in a committee, leading in an informal manner, or even stepping up into leadership requires effort, but that is also how to make friends and put down roots.

On the future of the JLC Arina plans to be a hands-on leader. She said, “For me, leadership is about serving the League. It is about helping the JLC make transformations in order to stay vital to members.”

She is excited about attending events and speaking with members about their personal experiences and garnering opinions on things the League could be doing. She wants to learn more about what it is that we do, but also about what matters to our members.

Arina says of what she admires about the League, “One of the things I love best about this organization is that it is not competitive. We come together to work toward our mission, and celebrate each other’s ideas, successes and hard work. I love being a part of that.”

Some of the long-term and strategic goals Arina hopes to tackle during her term include: • • •

Improving member (Provisional, Active, and Sustainer) culture, experiences and engagement Developing training and support for League leaders to make for better experiences of committee members Improve fundraising – increasing the success of the Annual Fund through better presentation to members and partner organizations Tapping the unrealized potential of some of our signature events

Life Outside of the JLC When Arina is not running her business or serving with the JLC, she enjoys recharging by reading. She also enjoys sharing her love of reading with her son and experiencing his excitement as they read the first book of the Harry Potter series. Additionally, she gives her time to the New Families program at her son’s school and participates in the book fair.

Arina has a personal connection with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation as her niece, Hannah, has Type 1 diabetes.

Arina spends her time working to raise funds for JDRF, as well as helping plan an annual gala.

What others have to say about Arina On seizing opportunities: When Arina was 13, she felt she could no longer do without horseback riding. We bought her a very young and untrained horse, stabled it at a horse farm and said “the rest is yours: the monthly stabling cost, training, and veterinary costs.”

She took matters into her own hands, got a job at the horse farm, worked extremely hard and never cost us another penny. When she left for college, she could not take the horse with her, but by this time the horse was so well trained that Arina was able to sell it for a good price and buy a car with the proceeds.

On stepping up: I met Arina this past summer for the first time at a Board of Directors and Management Team get together. We talked about the WearHouse suffering from low membership and the need for leaders and volunteers for various subcommittees. Within a few short days, she contacted me and said she would be willing to help wherever I needed her.

She helped with Consignment at the WearHouse for a few months, and although she has taken a step back to concentrate on her new President-Elect duties, she still offers her ear or a hand when the WearHouse is in need.

She is a true JLC Rockstar and leader! I feel lucky to have met her this past summer and become such great friends through the JLC. I am looking forward to seeing her lead the JLC! Nantasha Chryst – WearHouse Chair

Annual Fund Committee commits every dollar raised for more smiles

On a sunny Saturday in August, parents and children in the Charlotte area line up to make sure their school year will continue uninterrupted. It is a crucial time at the start of a child’s school career, not only because of the many friends they hope to make in a new kindergarten class, but also for their health.

The Community Example The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system requires multiple and specific health screens and tests for students entering kindergarten. The reality is that many times, these tests are not feasible if a family does not have a regular doctor, cannot afford time off during the work week, or cannot afford the cost of the health test.

The Junior League of Charlotte Inc. (JLC) has taken the opportunity to step in and meet some of this need with Family Health Link. In conjunction with other community organizations also providing school required screens such as hearing and vision at no cost, the JLC has a longrunning placement offering required dental exams to the community.

Family Health Link is only one of a multitude of successful community programs the JLC operates and continues to develop every single year. These machinations take time and effort from many different groups in order for the organization to support the successful functioning of the League. The Annual Fund is one way we do this.

All funds earned by the Annual Fund directly support League operations, everything from offering training and leadership opportunities, to our ability to recruit and retain members and the operations behind our community programs.

Every Small Gift Counts The JLC’s Annual Fund Committee actively works to develop opportunities for charitable contributions throughout the year. Led by Ellen Rankin, the nine member group works to look out for the JLC base. These unrestricted funds are integral to how the JLC can sustain and advance the mission to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve the Charlotte community. Along with supporting funds from the Annual Fund, the JLC seeks grants to enable the mission. Many times, a key component to grant applications will be the amount of member participation in the annual fund program, a key sign of a financially healthy group. In this respect, smaller donations of $5 or $10 can have a twofold effect; supporting JLC programs and enhancing our position when seeking outside influence.

Currently, the goals for the Annual Fund Committee include continued increase of donations, as well as increasing member participation. The more members that donate the better, even if individual donations are not large. There are multiple ways to support the Annual

The CRIER | Spring 2016 Fund and therein, community programs like Family Health Link. Members and supporters of the JLC can make small or large donations throughout the year, and many companies will match charitable donations to local organizations.

Like the JLC, many organizations strive to increase donations before the end of the year when many will be looking for tax incentives. Also, within the Charlotte area, many companies will match charitable donations to local organizations. Nearly as many will match gifts for a member’s spouse!

The Annual Fund is a big deal - a gift can enable the JLC to provide free dental exams to kindergartners that may otherwise be unable to attain in order to stay in school. It helps to ensure the long term success of the League, and it allows the League to function at a high level. Support of the Annual Fund promotes external placements by sustaining a healthy base of operations with internal placements.

It is our future, and as the JLC further changes and develops, it will be crucial that the work conducted by our Annual Fund Committee is not forgotten.

5th Annual March Money Madness Makes a Slam Dunk for the Junior League of Charlotte, Inc.!

The 5th Annual March Money Madness, a basketball-themed fundraiser to benefit the mission of The Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC), occurred on March 10 at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille. The event offered members of the JLC and the community an opportunity to participate in a virtual silent auction and a raffle for a cash prize.

More than 400 people came out to cheer on ACC teams during the quarter-final round of the 2016 ACC Tournament, which resulted in a 72-52 Virginia win over Georgia Tech and 88-82 Miami win over Virgina Tech.

The crowd was delighted with appearances from the Charlotte Hornet’s own mascot, Hugo the Hornet, Big Pat, the Voice of the Hornets, and local NBA basketball legend Eric “Sleepy” Floyd, a Gastonia native.

Making the Transition Get to know this year’s Junior League of Charlotte transfer members

Past League Fun Fact: Greenville has such a great small town feel, it was easy to make friends with other new members. I still keep up with several of the girls from my provisional class, despite having moved miles away from them.

Favorite JL Memory: The JLG had a fun gala called Big Night Out. It was so much fun getting to dress up and enjoy drinks with my friends. The party had a Cirque de Soleil theme, leaving us with great memories of the performers.

Favorite JL Memory: I had the opportunity to attend the Organizational Development Institute in Texas in February 2015. It was wonderful meeting other Junior League ladies and learning about how to successfully run a non-profit.

What surprised you about the JLC? I was pleasantly surprised that the JLC has almost 2000 members. I transferred from a League that had around 300, so it is certainly rare to see larger Leagues.

Do you have any fundraisers or events specific to your past League?

The American Girl Fashion Show is a fun filled event for girls and their families to learn about the culture and history of fashion through the American Girl Doll. The Enchanted Forest is a holiday festival featuring a wide array of events for the entire family.

Past League Fun Fact: The JLR was a big league, but it felt like a family.

Raleigh’s league had so many community partners and had a very big hand in the development of Wake County’s non-profit agencies.

Favorite JL Memory: As a JLR Team Captain of StepUp Ministry, we were in charge of developing and running the children’s program for the children whose parents were going through the Life Skills portion of StepUp. Our weekly meetings were some of the only stability these children had in their lives and to be a part of their emotional and mental development was something that I will always be thankful and grateful for.

Bargain Sale is basically a giant yard sale where members donate clothes and home goods and sell them to the community. Roast on the Coast is a fancy cocktail party open to the community, with a band, great food, silent auction and open bar.

JLC Puppets: Lifelong Members of the League

Hoping that puppets had more potential than just entertainment purposes, this committee decided to offer its services to the Special Education Classes in the Charlotte schools. The committee wanted puppetry to have a real purpose and place in the learning process of children, believing that an animated object could communicate with these “special” children – the mentally challenged(sp) and physically handicapped – in a delightful and rewarding way. Mr. Hickes, head of the Special Education program in the schools, and the teachers were enthusiastic and cooperative. As a result, the Junior League has successfully presented a program that the teachers can continue to use as an aid in their teaching program. Because of the tremendous response of children and teachers to last year’s program, the committee has now been expanded so that it can visit 25 of the 50 Special Education Classes.

Many of our active members have seen those fun-loving puppets, Jake and Horner, teach kids about healthy nutritional and life choices in their crazy game show format. They and their friends, the JLC Puppets, have entertained Charlotte kids both live through Kids in the Kitchen and Second Saturdays at the WearHouse, and through an interactive video game on the Junior League of Charlotte, Inc.’s (JLC) website, since 2008. But did you know that puppetry has a much longer history in our League?

In November 1961, the JLC Puppets were featured in The CRIER – and it turns out that our members have been turning to puppets to educate children while leaving a positive, lasting impression for many, many years.

The Puppets started as an upbeat entertainment for children, but in 1960, League members began to explore the use of Puppets in therapy and education sessions. Learn more about our long history in this month’s article from the Archives:

Two visits, each lasting from one-half to one hour, are made to each class. On the first visit the League girls set up their stage and present a well-polished puppet play. “The Three Little Pigs,” complete with scenery and music. Afterward the children are given kits containing the makings of their own “Little Pig” puppet. They tackle these kits with energy and joy. On a follow-up visit, the girls explain how to convert the puppets into different characters like a witch, Indian, Santa Claus, or one timely to the classroom work. One of the valuable techniques used is that of the League girl standing outside of the stage, talking informally to the puppet, asking it questions about school work and having the puppet solicit the children’s aid in answering. The teacher later uses this method herself.

Puppets: At Work and Play At Work: Puppets II Puppets II has been an experimental committee of the Junior League for many years, creating a new program with each chairman. Beginning last year under Betty Sue Bell and currently following the same pattern under Chairman Helen Jones, the group has found what may be a true niche in the community.

Puppets I is using a play from the Jacksonville, Florida League, “The Magic Hat,” dealing with a dragon whose teeth are missing – a play of sheer fun and nonsense.

The puppets are proving to be useful instruments of therapy. The children take great delight in making them come alive, helping them sing songs, recite their work, and be an important classroom participant. As a result, speech, coordination, communication, span of interest, and cooperation among the children are stimulated by the puppets. Routine schoolwork can be presented in a different light.

The League girls have felt deeply satisfied in their work because they have opened a door for each child into a whole new world of fun and experience in normal living. The following incident happened this fall: One day a certain little girl, particularly forlorn in expression, drew the attention of the League group; they feared they had not reached her. However, the full impact of their work hit them with a lump in the throat later when the teacher confided, “She smiled during your performance for the first time since I’ve known her.”

Some 6,000 children will have seen the play by the time the season ends.

The puppeteers actually started work last spring when they created the puppet characters. When League work started up again in September, they began rehearsals which continued until time to set up their stage before the delighted youngsters of their audiences.

The committee divided up into two troupes, each containing a complete cast. Emma was in charge of one, Sybil the other.

At Play: Puppets I A season of puppetry started with a TV mix up, then sailed through a month of trouping to 14 schools will wind up the day after Thanksgiving with two performance for League children.

Weekly coffee sessions at the Griffith home (while remodeling was taking place at the Headquarters workshop) helped make the season a success for the troupe, as well as the audience.

The TV mix up came about when Puppets I, Chairman Emma Griffith and Co-Chariman Sybil Schiffli, arrived at the WSOC-TV studio at the invitation of League husband Bill Scruggs. They were to publicize, with puppets, their upcoming season on the “Joey the Clown” show – only it seems that Brooks “Joey” Lindsay didn’t know it. After a flurry of embarrassed introductions off-camera during the show, our League troupers came through with flying colors, completely ad-libbing for

Alexander Youth Network: Building Relationships and Brightening Days

Fall festival? Tree lighting? Dance Party? Yes! Each of these events serve as socials for the residential clients of the Alexander Youth Network!

JLC and AYN partner to bring fun events all year long.

In 2006, the membership of the Junior League of Charlotte, Inc.(JLC) approved Alexander Youth Network (AYN) as a placement for volunteers. The notion was JLC volunteers would enter somewhat of a mentoring program - have the one-on-one options to serve as lunch and/or dinner buddies on a weekly basis.

Volunteers could also opt to tutor on a weekly basis or serve as a classroom buddy on a monthly basis. Now, just over 10 years later, the partnership continues to thrive through thousands of volunteer hours and monetary support.

According to the AYN website, it serves approximately 7,000 children, in different programs, ages 5-18, with emotional and behavioral issues. Clients are referred to AYN by hospitals, parents, physicians, schools, and state and county agencies. Working with AYN, has been a “really great experience,” says Dana Christian, Vice-Chair of the AYN Committee. Dana continues, “What brought me into AYN was ultimately their mission. Their mission is essentially twofold: rehabilitation of their children who have suffered some type of trauma in their lives which can be across a wide spectrum of issues and concerns, trauma from mental or physical abuse or neglect in their family or outside their family - that is their main goal. Their other goal is for growth, which ultimately stems from that rehabilitation to once they leave AYN in whatever capacity they were there -long term or short term- and really become functioning and happy children.”

The Junior League hosts events on AYN’s campus for 36 clients of the residential program. Volunteers enrich the clients’ lives by sponsoring themed events and strive to bring light to their day while there. “We (JLC volunteers) mostly deal with just the residential kids. We try to give them opportunities that all kids would have or give them

opportunities they would not normally have like going to a fall festival, going to a dance party, even a tree lighting, “ says Michelle Cameron, AYN Committee Chair.

With the Charlotte Campus of Alexander Youth Network being located at 6220 Thermal Rd. and the expectation that volunteers would dedicate an average of one hour per week, for a six month period, scheduling is often times a challenge. It is a huge commitment. In order to tackle these challenges, about two years ago, the chair at that time, Liv Aument, collaborated with Angela Sosebee, Volunteer Group Coordinator at AYN to find something that would work best with everyone’s schedules.

Fall Festival The fall of 2015 was the third year for the fall festival. During the festival, the volunteers rotated the children through different stations - pumpkin painting, pumpkins toss (very popular) and face painting.

A new event, this year was the Feeling Guts Station. It was a big hit!

The kids put their hands in and felt monster toes (parsnips), monster eyeballs (peeled grapes) and monster brains (spaghetti)! The JLC’s Kids in the Kitchen participated by making a snack. They made a turkey out of an apple, fruit and marshmallows. The kids also made Thankful Wreaths. The leaves on the wreaths were things for which the kids were thankful. The festival also featured music and the kids danced!

Tree Lighting The Tree Lighting event was sponsored by AYN with the JLC’s AYN committee providing support. The event featured crafts, including stars ornaments made from yarn. Attendees also painted holiday themed pictures and played an interesting and popular game called Roll-A-Rudolph. The game board featured the face of Rudolph. The object was to roll the dice and complete the face. Roll 1 - get an eye.

Roll 2 - get the nose, Roll 3 - get the mouth, etc. until the entire face was complete. Additionally, the tree lighting event coincided with the Angel Network where gifts were collected for the clients. The AYN

Dance Party In the past the Dance Party was always called a Prom, but the name was changed this year. It was casual - no dressing up and no dates. Music was provided by DJ Little K, who is also a kid. Decorations were a Hollywood theme, with sunglasses and Mardi Gras beads. There were crafts for attendees who chose not to dance or who wanted to take a break from dancing. The dance party was a great opportunity for the kids to get together, dance and have loads of fun!

Field Day Field Day is planned for the Spring. The kids will run from station to station, releasing bottled-up energy and having a barrel of fun.

45 Years and Counting Center for Prevention Services and the Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. Share a 45 Year Old History

Junior League of Charlotte, Inc.(JLC) members have been pioneers of change since the start of the organization 90 years ago. In the late 1960s, a group of JLC members and other community leaders recognized the need to take action in order to save local youth from falling victim to drug and alcohol abuse. At the time, drugs and alcohol were a common pastime on many college campuses. The Charlotte Medical Society created a survey, which also confirmed drugs and alcohol were accessible and being used by middle and high school children in the Charlotte community.

Jane Goble-Clark, Executive Director for the Center for Prevention Services (CPS) helped to recall the history of the agency which is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. Goble-Clark stated JLC team members sprung into action and organized members of various local community groups to form the Drug Abuse Steering Committee.

The vision and goals of the committee proved to be somewhat futuristic in that much of the support being offered in the community at that time was mostly focused on treatment for those struggling with drug and/or alcohol abuse. However, the JLC and other involved community leaders recognized a need to place more attention on the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse. Leaders in the group realized the impact drugs and alcohol had on individuals and communities. They worked to create prevention services as a means to fight abuse especially for the younger generation.

In 1971, the Drug Education Center was founded and quickly began to focus on addressing the needs of the community. The formation of the Drug Education Center was made possible by a $25,000 pledge from the JLC each year for three years. Later, the center was renamed Substance Abuse Prevention Service and is known today as the Center for Prevention Services.

CPS continues to take a people-first approach to addressing drug and alcohol abuse locally. CPS’s research and active approach to outreach helped the agency gain national recognition within 10 years of its start. Goble-Clark stated, “Our agency is the hidden gem of Charlotte. Our programs help people individually. We help families, but we also help communities because prevention really fills all three of those different levels.” CPS has continued the tradition of conducting the Youth Drug Survey every few years in order to assess drug and alcohol usage at the middle and high school level. These survey results help the agency to level set and focus on outreach and education that is targeted to the needs of the community.

This year CPS is celebrating its 45th anniversary and they wanted to make it special by getting back to their roots and where it all began.

Goble-Clark stated it was the JLC’s involvement and contributions in the early years that helped shaped CPS into what it is today. As a part of the 45th anniversary, CPS recognized the JLC with an award for their contribution and support of the agency’s vision over the years.

According to Goble-Clark there is still a lot of work to be done with regard to creating awareness of drug and alcohol abuse in the community. She stated there are many ways individuals can get involved in CPS initiatives and volunteer. There is always a need to have people promoting the value of drug and alcohol prevention services.

The CRIER | Spring 2016 CPS invites individuals to connect with their agency to educate and create awareness in their neighborhoods, schools and other small groups.

CPS holds Friday trainings, which are open to individuals and families to participate in targeted discussions related to prevention. These trainings are ideal for families and those with teenagers. Additionally, CPS has created the Youth Coalition, which empowers youth to build their resistance to drugs and alcohol through increased leadership skills, selfesteem and building upon other positive character traits.

The JLC helped build and support the founding principles and vision for CPS. The celebration of the 45th anniversary is an exciting time for the agency and the JLC. CPS is looking forward to continuing to serve the community with their people-centered approach to prevention services.

They encourage all JLC members and the community to help support their mission through volunteer initiatives and use of the agency for the purpose of educating as many individuals, families, and neighbors that need their support.

Free Evidence-Based Programs available in 2016 include: • unique YOU ® – Alcohol, Tobacco and drug prevention program that teaches children healthy living skills, decision-making, and effective communication. Targeted audience is Grades 3-4 and the program is available in English and Spanish.

• Project Northland Series: Class Action – Looks at real world consequences of the use of alcohol underage. Teenagers prepare and present hypothetical civil cases related to substance abuse and present the case to a jury of their peers. Participants also get involved in local events that support awareness of the issues with underage drinking • Celebrating Families! – Designed to provide support for every member of a family starting at age 3 to break the cycle of addition and increase unity within a family when there is a high risk for domestic violence, abuse or neglect as a result of alcohol or drug usage.

Fee for Service Programs available in 2016 include (cost varies by program): • Breathe Easy, Live Well – Tobacco Cessation – wellness and tobacco cessation program designed to reduce the harmful effects that tobacco has on people with mental illnesses.

• Self-Control – Encourages participants to examine their own level of self-control and how to match their behavior to different social contexts • Conflict Resolution – Defining conflict and learning to deal with conflict through the use of role-playing. Helps to promote positive conflict resolution.

1 package spaghetti ¾ lb. ground round steak 1 can tomatoes (No. 2) 1 green pepper 2 medium onions Bacon grease 1 medium can chopped mushrooms ½ cup buttered bread crumbs 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce 8 shakes Tabasco Sauce 2 tablespoons chili powder 3 tablespoons catsup ½ lb. grated Wisconsin cheese Salt and pepper

1 6 oz pkg chocolate chips ¼ cup boiling water 4 separated eggs 3 Tbl. creme de menthe ¼ lb softened butter 1 Tbl. sugar Whipping cream, whipped

Cook spaghetti in boiling water 20 minutes or until tender. Brown onion, pepper and seasoned meat in bacon grease. Mix with tomatoes, mushrooms, Worcestershire, Tabasco, chili, salt, pepper, and most of the cheese.

In another bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Add sugar and beat until stiff. Fold egg whites into chocolate mixture, a small amount at a time.

Put chips in blender or food processor and blend until grated.

Scrape sides and add boiling water.

Blend until melted and add egg yolks and creme de menthe.

Blend again and pour into mixing bowl. Blend in butter a little at a time.

Pour into lightly buttered serving bowl or 6 small dishes.

Add cooked spaghetti and mix well. Place in buttered baking dish, top with the rest of the cheese, catsup and crumbs.

Chill at least 4 hours.

Bake in oven (350*F.) for 30 to 45 minutes.

Serve with whipped cream on top.

Can be mixed beforehand and kept in the refrigerator.

1 small can crushed pineapple 2 Tbl. maraschino cherries 2 Tbl. cream of coconut 1 “juice glass” rum

Swing Lowe Quiche Lorraine

Boil chicken breasts in water to cover containing 1-2 Tbl. of butter, 2 bouillon cubes, and seasonings of your choice, about 30 minutes or until chicken is tender.

Place in blender and fill with ice.

Hornets Homecooking

Place chicken on bottom of 13x11 baking dish and spread cream of chicken over chicken, (mix a little of the broth into soups to make them creamier), then spread stuffing over soup.

½ lb. bacon 9” baked pie shell 1 small can mushrooms drained 1 ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese 3 onions, chopped 1 ¼ cup light cream 3 eggs ½ tsp. salt ⅛ tsp. pepper

Top with cream of celery soup. Bake 350* for 45 minutes or until golden brown on top.

Serve with good green salad and French bread, or Dell’s favorite, applesauce.

Cook and drain bacon. Crumble bacon on the bottom of pie shell - sprinkle mushrooms, cheese, and onions on top of bacon. Beat remaining ingredients, pour over bacon and cheese mixture. Bake 40-45 min. at 400* or microwave on low for 30-35 minutes.

April 17 through 23 Junior League of Charlotte members and supporters will be wearing the same black dress.

Why? To raise awareness about poverty issues facing the Charlotte area and to raise awareness and funding for the programming and initiatives of the Junior League of Charlotte designed to improve the lives of the children and families in the Charlotte area and to provide much needed mental, dental and physical health services.

Editor Michelle teaches journalism at Converse College, and in her freetime she enjoys making wheel-thrown pottery and baking.

Assistant Editor Morgan is a newlywed from Charleston. She loves seafood, red wine, and her sweet pup, Lola.

Ad Sales Manager Hannah is an engaged native Charlottean. She enjoys traveling, reading, and staying active and healthy.

Reporter Betsey lives in Charlotte and graduated from Davidson. She and her husband, Tim, recently had their first child, Charlie.

Reporter Alexandra is a transfer from the Junior League of Greensboro. She lives in Charlotte and is currently a brand strategist for a local marketing firm. She loves animals and cake decorating.

Photography Editor Kristin lives in Huntersville with her husband and new baby. They are currently fixing up their new home.

Reporter Shemeka is from Riegelwood, NC, and is married to her high school sweetheart. She loves adventurous vacations, good movies, fine dining, and crafts.
